JOHNSON Thomas - 1872 - 01/08/1872 – Age 30 – Coalminer. Dunkenhalgh, Henry Petre, Church, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp. In working out pillar gas accumulated in the goaf beyond and it was apparently lighted at Parkinson’s safety lamp which he opened. A verdict of manslaughter was returned against him at the inquest. Died 7th. 4 killed. Richard Taylor, a Miner, was examined, and stated that colliers could light their lamps through a safety-lamp without opening it, and he showed the jury how it was possible to do it. He thought if Parkinson opened his lamp. He found Parkinson asleep a short time before the explosion. He must have opened his lamp after he saw him, and must have done so if his lamp top was found 150 yards from where he worked. The coroner summed up, and freed the management of the colliery from blame, pointing out that Parkinson was the man who was legally responsible for the explosion. He directed them to return a verdict of manslaughter against Parkinson. The jury accordingly did so. Parkinson however never faced justice for his actions for he too died from his injuries before he could be got to trial. Accrington Times, 17th. August 1872; -- "The Dunkenhalgh Pit Explosion, the death of Parkinson. We reported on Saturday that the jury which sat to examine the cause of the deaths of Geoffrey Lomax, William Walsh and Thomas Johnson had returned a verdict of manslaughter against William Parkinson of Church Kirk, one of the injured men, who was proved to have caused the explosion in the pit by opening his lamp. Parkinson at the time was in a critical condition, and the knowledge of the verdict seems to have made him still worse. After it was given, up to the time of his death, he refused to take any nourishment, and wished to die. His death took place on Monday morning, at half past six o'clock. The deceased was very badly burnt about the face and arms, but it was not thought to be seriously. The fact of his having caused the explosion seemed however, to exert a depressing effect upon him from the first few days after the explosion. The inquest was held on Tuesday afternoon at Church Kirk, before Mr. Hargreaves coroner. The widow deposed that the deceased was her husband, that he was a Collier and aged 42 years. He was burnt at the colliery explosion at the Dunkenhalgh pit on Thursday week, and died on Monday morning at six o'clock. The evidence of the witnesses who were examined at the previous enquiry was then taken, which went to show that Parkinson was to blame for the explosion. The jury, by direction of the coroner returned a verdict that the deceased died from misadventure. From inquiries made yesterday it appears that Lomax and Taylor are soon likely to recover from their injuries. Berry is the most burnt of the survivors, and hopes are entertained that he may recover".
