BROWN James - 1883 - 04/02/1883 – Age 32 – Shaftman. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon, Co. Durham. Fell from main coal to low main a distance of 44 yards.

BROWN James - 1883 - 16/04/1883 – Age 26 – Brusher. Drumriggend, John Nimmo and Son, Slamannan, Stirling. Fall of roof at face, while brushing a road at a hitch. Long wall.

BROWN James - 1884 – 14/07/1884 – Age 42 – Collier. Loundon No.1, Eglington Iron Co., Hurlford, Ayrshire. Fall of coal at face.

BROWN James - 1885 – 10/04/1885 – Age 59 – Deputy. Seghill, Joseph Laycock and Co., Seghill, Northumberland. Caught by empty set on engine plane.

BROWN James - 1886 – 04/03/1886 – Age 53 – Collier. Gidlow & Swinley, Rylands Trust and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Killed by a heavy fall of roof at the face of his working place. The fireman and deceased had propped the place 3 hours before and his props at the time were only 8 feet from the face. He was getting out the last pillar in a district and the crush was on.

BROWN James - 1887 - 08/09/1887 – Oversman. Morningside, Morningside Coal Co., Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Cage stuck in shaft and it fell on him while he was trying to relieve it.

BROWN James - 1888 - 13/04/1888 - Age 14 – Driver. East Hetton, Walter Scott, Coxhoe, Co. Durham. Struck on head and arms by an iron bolt falling from a tub while ascending shaft. Died on 21st.

BROWN John - 1884 - 12/05/1884 – Age 38 – Weighman. Widdrington, Widdrington Coal Co., Widdrington, Northumberland. Struck on head by horse.

BROWN John - 1885 - 21/11/1885 – Age 21 - Horse driver. Himley, Trustees of the late Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Was foolishly resting under a large fallen piece of coal which was resting spragwise when it fell and killed him.

BROWN John - 1887 - 07/10/1887 – Age 61 – Hewer. Low Beechburn, John Sharp, Crook, Co. Durham. Caught by engine set as he was coming outbye, he having been previously cautioned.

BROWN John - 1888 – 14/08/1888 – Age 18 – Gang rider. Westhoughton No.1, Westhoughton Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatally crushed near a manhole by a train of tubs in the engine brow.

BROWN John - 1889 – 09/07/1889 – Age 19 – Collier. Celynen Newport, Abercarn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of coal from the face in consequence of inadequate spragging only two or three weeks previously some men from this colliery had been proceeded against before the justices and were fined for the same thing.

BROWN John Adamson - 1889 - 24/04/1889 – Age 20 – Screenman. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Willington, Co. Durham. Killed by an explosion of coal dust while engaged cleaning out a coal bunker. They had large oil torch lamps with them and as soon as they commenced to disturb the large accumulation of fine dust an explosion took place. They died on the 27th. 3 killed.

BROWN John William - 1886 - 30/01/1886 – Age 19 – Loader. Birley, West Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of timber and roof when commencing to drive a heading.

BROWN Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 29/02/1888 – Age 38 – Roadman. Atherton, Victoria Fletcher Burrows & Co., Lancashire. Back injured against a pulley frame when riding up the engine brow he apparently not being able to the look out as there was 15 inches of space between the frame and the tub.

BROWN Joseph - 1886 - 22/10/1886 – Age 36 – Hewer. Heworth, Owners of Heworth Colliery, Heworth, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

BROWN Joseph - 1887 - 18/08/1887 – Age 33 - Hanger on. Moorcroft, Old Roberts and Cooper, Moxley, Staffordshire. Killed by falling from part way down a shaft to the bottom.

BROWN N. - 1886 - 30/07/1886 – Age 49 – Loader. Brereton, Earl of Shrewsbury, Rugeley, Staffordshire. Rate of coal over sprags when holing in working place. The coal was improperly spragged.

BROWN or BOWMAN John - 1881 - 02/03/1881 – Age 16 – Collier. Lumphinnans No.7, Lumphinnans Iron Co., Ballingry, Fife. Fall of roof at road head, six feet from face. Longwall.

BROWN Peter (non-fatal) - 1888 - 03/12/1888 - Pony driver. Galston, Robert T Horne, Galston, Ayrshire. Got his leg broken slipping in front of a hutch.

BROWN Peter - 1882 - 03/02/1882 – Age 54 – Collier. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Deceased was killed by a fall of roof whilst engaged drawing timber.

BROWN Peter - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 60. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery.

BROWN Richard - 1881 - 29/06/1881 – Age 59 – Timberman. Pennerley Minsterley, Fall of a rock from the roof of a level whilst he was putting in timber which would have supported it.

BROWN Robert - 1881 - 29/12/1881 – Collier. Bent No.1, Bent Colliery Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Found dead below some tubs on endless rope haulage road. He had left the face unwell, and is supposed to have taken a fit.

BROWN Robert - 1882 - 01/05/1882 – Age 41 - Deputy. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof.

BROWN Samuel - 1882 - 15/03/1882 – Age 49 – Loader. Foxyards, William Punter, Tipton, Staffordshire. A mass of rock rolled down the shutt and knocking out a tree in the opening, caused the roof coal to fall upon deceased.

BROWN Samuel - 1882 - 27/10/1882 – Age 40 – Hewer. Dudley, Cramlington Coal Co., Northumberland. Crushed by tubs on engine plane.

BROWN Samuel - 1883 - 29/03/1883 – Age 14 - Taker off. Wynnstay, New British Iron Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had come to bank after his day’s work and as the assistant hooker-on was going down to another seam the lad had come to the cage to go and see a new brake as he told the man He went to the brake and as the journey started up deceased jumped on to ride up. He was afterwards found dead half way up the brake and it is supposed that he was getting on the empty journey and was caught by the fall tubs. The hooker-on with whom he went down and the man at the bottom of the brake were much to blame in this case the former for not at once taking him up the pit and the latter for not stopping the journey when deceased got on.

BROWN Thomas - 1882 - 04/04/1882 – Age 57 – Dataler. Garswood Hall, Smethurst Hoyle and Grime, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased, with others, was engaged getting some roof down. They had pulled all the loose stones and were filling them into tubs, when a stone fell on deceased.

BROWN Thomas - 1885 - 18/03/1885 – Age 14 - Station boy. Haswell, Haswell Shotton and Easington Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. While coming outbye he was run over by engine set.

BROWN Thomas - 1888 - 08/03/1888 - Age 45 – Collier. Alliance, Clarke Bros., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was killed by a fall of roof in his working place. There was apparently a deficient supply of timber but the evidence on this point was very conflicting.

BROWN William jnr. (injured) - 1889 - 04/06/1889 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. The man engine rod broke at the 190 fathom level and the men as a result fell a few feet by which they sustained some slight injuries. As other accidents had recently occurred at this mine from similar causes, I wrote to the manager suggesting that a little more scrutiny on the part of the man responsible for keeping the man engine in good repair might possibly prevent some accidents. Captain Thomas replied that he would appoint a successor to the man in charge of this work although he doubted if it were possible to display more vigilance in inspecting the man engines that had been shown in the past. 4 injured.

BRUCE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1888 - 01/05/1888 - Coal picker. Gauchalland No.4, Gauchalland Coal Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Crushed by hutch while in front of it.

BRUCE Andrew - 1886 - 18/08/1886 – Age 58 – Trimmer. Amiston, Amiston Coal Co. Ltd., Cockpen, Edinburgh. Was walking along end of waggon and fell into it in a sharp piece of iron. He was not at work at the time.

BRUCE James (non-fatal) - 1887 - 07/10/1889 – Age 28 – Miner. Bog Hamilton, McCulloch and Co., Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 7 injured. 36 days off.

BRUCE James - 1881 - 09/09/1881 – Age 59 – Overman. Brooms Drift, Consett Iron and Coal Co., Leadgate, Co. Durham. While riding on a set of tubs between drift mouth and screens, his head was caught by a bridge, which knocked him off the tub and the full set ran over him.

BRUCE William (non-fatal) - 1887 - 07/10/1889 – Age 26 – Miner. Bog Hamilton, McCulloch and Co., Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 7 injured. 36 days off.

BRUCE William - 1883 - 13/07/1883 – Age 17 - Putter Kimblesworth, Elliot and Hunter, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. A fall of stone took place in a staple where he was working, and knocked him off a ladder he fell about 30 feet.

BRYAN George - 1888 - 03/02/1888 – Age 68 – Carpenter. Stonehill, Roscow and Lord, Lancashire. Killed by falling down the shaft some pipes which he and two assistants were taking down having moved and knocked him out of the cage.

BRYAN J. - 1885 - 24/02/1885 – Age 68 – Byeworker. East Gawber, R Craik and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves Died 1st Mar.

BRYAN John - 1882 - 18/02/1882 – Age 18 – Inclineman. Roundwood, Roundwood Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

BRYANT Charles - 1886 - 19/02/1886 – Age 24 – Trammer. Eston, Leonard Boult and Co., Gloucester. Killed by explosion of firedamp. Died 22nd. 8 killed.

BRYANT Joseph - 1889 - 26/09/1889 – Age 36 – Hitcher. Kingswood Speedwell, Kingswood and Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Bristol, Somerset. Crushed at the bottom of the pit. He omitted to put in the stop block and as the fall tubs were running forward he tried to stop them and was pushed into the shaft by the descending cage.

BRYANT Samuel - 1883 - 27/01/1883 – Age 38 – Collier. Aberpergwm, MS Williams, Glyn, Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

BRYCE Allan (non-fatal) - 1889 - 19/02/1889 - Pony driver. Drumpeller Nos. 3 & 4, Summerlee Iron Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. The pony turned and his leg was broken between the tail chain and the hutch.

BRYCE David - 1889 - 06/12/1889 – Age 39 – Miner. Common No.11, Eglinton Iron Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire. Fell down shaft from midworking.

BRYCE John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 08/01/1889 – Age 36 – Miner. Oakbank, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of shale. 31 days off.

BRYCE William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 14/11/1889 – Drawer. Lethamhill, John Allan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Got his arm broken between two hutches.

BROWN William - 1886 - 03/12/1886 – Age 28 – Drawer. Meadows, Lamb and Moore, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased took his loaded tub on to the engine plane whilst the rope was running when a coupling in the rope caught the hook of the tub and deceased was knocked against the side of the road. He had frequently been cautioned not to take his tub out until the rope stopped.

BUCK Thomas Percival - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 18 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

BUCKBERRY John - 1882 - 07/11/1882 – Age 37 – Stallman. Clay Cross No.7, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Explosion of gas 48 killed.

BUCKINGHAM Frederick (injured) - 1888 - 23/07/1888 – Age 32 – Miner. Witton Hall (metalliferous), John Thompson Co., Cheshire. Foot crushed by a piece of rock-salt sliding off a tub during transit to the shaft.

BUCKINGHAM George - 1884 - 01/02/1884 – Age 27 – Shaftman. Holmbush (metalliferous), New Holmbush Mining Co. Ltd., Callington, Cornwall. Deceased was ascending the engine shaft and being unaware that the skip was working at the time attempted to cross the skip road when he was crushed to death by the skip coming down on him.

BUCKINGHAM Henry - 1886 - 02/12/1886 – Age 22 – Stoneman. Elemore, Hetton Coal Co Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Explosion 28 killed Buried in the Churchyard of St. Michael and All Angels Lyons.

BUCKINGHAM William - 1882 - 18/08/1882 – Age 40 – Pitman. Wheal, Prussia &Cardew United (metalliferous), Wheal Prussia Adventurers, Redruth, Cornwall. Was engaged with others taking up some pumps in the engine shaft. At the 70 fathoms level, or bottom of the downright part of the shaft, deceased and Henry Peters got on the pumps to ride up whilst doing so the pumps hitched against a piece of timber, and they sang out ‘hold fast’; the instant that the capstan stopped the pump cleared itself with jerk, which threw Buckingham in the shaft he fell to the 70 fathoms level, and was instantly killed. There was no necessity for deceased and Peters to have ridden on the pumps.

BUCKINGHAM William - 1887 - 11/03/1887 - Age 21 – Hewer. South Tanfield, James Joicey and Co., Tanfield, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

BUCKLAND George - 1889 - 15/04/1889 – Age 53 – Stallman. Clay Cross No.7, Clay Cross Coal and Iron Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Fall of coals. The deceased was reholing coals that had been holed and standing on the sprags for six days previously.

BUCKLAND William - 1887 - 05/01/1887 – Age 24 – Hitcher. North Dunraven, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Crushed by cage descending on him at pit bottom. It was not known whether he had been attempting to cross or had fallen in.

BUCKLE William - 1884 28/03/1884 54 Pikeman Grace Mary S Minton and Co., Dudley Worcester Died 6th Apr. Explosion of firedamp.

BUCKLEY George (injured) - 1885 - 26/03/1885 – Age 35 – Miner. Sholver, Oldham Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Burned very slightly by a flash of gas which ignited at his candle on going into the place. The fireman had examined it and left his mark at the face within two hours previously. Gas had not been seen in the colliery for upwards of four years but after the accident gas was found issuing in small crack in the floor.

BUCKLEY James - 1884 - 02/05/1884 – Age 42 – Dayman. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof timber while repairing.

BUCKLEY James - 1886 - 11/08/1886 – Quarryman. Lee (stone), Henry Heyes and Co., Lancashire. Not comprised by the Mining Act. Inquest reported on James Buckley, quarryman, knocked off a gangway by a waggon in the open quarry.

BUCKLEY Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 18/12/1888 – Age 45 – Fireman. Jubilee, Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Mills, ear singed, Buckley burned slightly, Jagger and Whatmough burned seriously by explosion of firedamp. Candles were ordinarily used in the mine but the fireman and the two miners who were using a safety lamp whilst making an opening into an old working liberated some firedamp and it lighted at the under-manager’s candle 42 yards off as he was walking along the road the flame following the train to the opening. 4 injured.

BUCKLEY Joseph - 1886 - 18/01/1886 – Age 31 – Miner. Butterworth Hall, Platt Brothers and Co., Lancashire. His hand was severely lacerated by a circular saw. It slipped on the wood there being ice on it. Died 27th.

BUCKLEY T. (injured) - 1883 – 24/03/1883 – Age 42 – Dayman. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof taking props.

BUCKLEY William - 1885 – 15/08/1885 – Age 28 – Stallman. Coton Park, Coton Park Colliery Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

BUCKNALL C - 1882 - 18/09/1882 – Age 25 – Miner. Lilleshall (ironstone), Lilleshall Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of ironstone.

BUCKNALL James - 1889 – 23/11/1889 – Age 20 – Loader. Saltwells, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Fall of coal in thick coal stall which knocked out a tree.

BUCKTON Henry - 1886 – 02/08/1886 – Age 33 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. While baring down stone a loose piece unobserved fell and fractured his skull. Died 29th. inst.

BUDDLE Joseph - 1888 – 29/06/1888 – Age 24 – Miner. Wheal Bassett (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. The two deceased men were working in a stope just under the 180 fathom level. Shortly after they commenced work a scale of ground came away from the back of the level about two or three fathoms above where the men were at work and in falling carried away the timbers supporting it the whole coming down on to the men at work below. The rock that fell away came off from what is known as a soapy head that is water had got into a clay seam and made the latter greasy from which the scale came away without warning. The ground all round was quite sound. 2 killed.

While descending in the morning the cage left the guides stuck in the shaft and then fell some fathoms. The deceased fell out but 2 others remained in the cage uninjured. 4 killed.

BURKE Michael - 1885 - 12/02/1885 – Age 46 – Collier. Mains Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was going down the engine plane to his work when by some unexplained means he came in contact with the gang of loaded tubs and was knocked against the side. Although it was his first day down this pit it is difficult to account for the accident as there was plenty of room on either side of the road and sufficient height. He also had his lighted lamp and there was also one on the gang.

The deceased was charging a shot hole with blasting powder when it exploded inflicting injuries from which he died in half an hour it is probable deceased's candle which was stuck on a bottle, fell over on to the powder and ignited the powder which was in the shot hole which lifted its burden and struck the deceased.

They were retimbering in an old road which was much crushed and after setting up a bar were taking out an old one when the side came over carrying two or three bars with it and burying the two deceased.

BURROWS John - 1884 - 14/08/1884 – Age 25 – Drawer. Phoenix, Benjamin B Glover and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A small fall of roof in the drawing road as deceased was filling his tub. The roof appeared to have been fairly good and bars had consequently not been set, although the road was propped. A recommendation was wade that the working places should be visited wore frequently by the officials, which the jury endorsed.

Deceased was engaged with other men in cleaning up the engine plane and said he would pull a bit of coal off the side to fill a tub. The deputy told him not to do so but as soon as the foreman had gone away, he commenced to pull the coal when a lump rolled over and crushed deceased's head against the side of a tub.

Fall of roof and clod which broke over a prop head; the stone was a small one, falling from a height of eight or nine feet and his constitution being no longer robust, he died 14th November.

BUTTERS A. - 1882 - 24/08/1882 – Age 17 - Hooker-on. Silverdale, Butterley Co., Silverdale, Staffordshire. Loaded wagon crushed him at top of incline.

BUTTERWORTH Abraham (injured) - 1886 - 14/07/1886 – Age 20 – Miner. Tunshill, Platt Brothers and Co., Lancashire. Injured by roof falling from slips as he was taking out a props in his working place.

BUTTERWORTH J. - 1881 - 02/11/1881 – Age 32 – Collier. Simon Wood, Earl Fitzwilliam, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

BUTTERWORTH James - 1882 - 05/01/1882 – Age 14 – Waggoner. Friar Hill, Victoria pit, George Hargreaves and Co., Accrington, Lancashire. Fall of roof on chain road. John Butterworth, labourer, 15 Major Street, said the deceased was his son, and was a drawer at the colliery. On Thursday afternoon the lad was brought home from the pit in an insensible condition, badly injured, and he died the same night. The injuries were mostly on the back of the head and on the forehead. He was dissatisfied about the boy being injured, because he was sent as a drawer, and he had been employed as a labourer in removing a portion of the roof, which was not fit work for a lad of 14 or 15 to be put to. (Accrington Times).

BUTTERWORTH John (injured) - 1887 - 19/05/1887 – Miner. Tong End (metalliferous), Henry Heys and Co., Lancashire. Leg broken by fall of a piece of roof stone taking down. He slipped forward as it fell.

BUTTERWORTH John - 1888 - 31/10/1888 – Age 33 – Collier. Sherdley, Whitecross Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was getting out a pillar supporting the roof with props three feet apart when a sudden weight came on carrying all the props before it.

BUTTERWORTH Thomas - 1888 - 11/10/1888 – Age 45 – Banker. Burlington (metalliferous), Barrow Steel Co., Park, Lancashire. Fell down shaft. When engaged putting a piece of timber on the cage at surface he slipped under cage and fell down pit.

BUTTLE Robert - 1889 - 27/03/1889 – Age 34 – Hewer. North Seaton, Cowpen Coal Co., North Seaton, Northumberland. Fall of coal.

BUTTON A. - 1881 - 12/05/1881 – Age 29 – Bailiff. Mackintosh, Westbury Iron Co., Somerset. Suffocated by rubbish. He was repairing a wind road with some other men when a lagging broke and caught him by the neck and a quantity of small rubbish fell and suffocated him before he could be released.

BUTTON Albert - 1883 - 12/10/1883 – Age 32. Wharncliffe, Carlton, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 20 killed.

BUTTON David - 1889 - 07/05/1889 – Age 34 – Fireman. Hebburn, Tyne Coal Co., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Boiler explosion. 4 killed.

BUTTON John - 1889 - 09/04/1889 – Age 23 - Carter or putter. Huish, Somerset. His tugger caught in the bridle chains of a tub and he was dragged down the incline and crushed by an ascending tram. Mr J.S. Nartin, the inspector, remarked "This method of hauling tubs by the girdle and chain is now rare but is still in vogue in the Somerset collieries. It is a barbarous system but the difficulty is how to alter it under existing circumstances. Buried Radstock 13/04/1889.

BUXTON Frederick - 1888 - 04/05/1888 – Age 33 – Roadman. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof and side.

BUXTON M. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 44 – Byeworker. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once, one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

BYERS Samuel (non-fatal) - 1889 - 09/07/1889 – Age 37 – Miner. Pentland, Clippens Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fell down shoot. 98 days off.

BYRNE Thomas - 1887 - 14/11/1887 – Age 15 – Driver. Adelaide, Pease and Partners Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Supposed his head was caught by a plank and he fell off limbers in front of set of empty tubs and was run over.
