An inquest was held on Monday afternoon at the Railway Hotel, Baxenden, on the body of John Woods Lambert, aged 14 son of Thomas and Sarah Lambert of Crow street, Baxenden, and formerly of Bury. On Sunday afternoon the 2nd instant, after getting his dinner, the lad went out for a walk-in company of his brother William who is three years older. They were joined by other youths, Thomas Chadwick, Thomas Alston, and they rambled together on Pen Moss and Black Moss. The others wished the deceased to return, and when he left them, he made towards home. He, however, never reached home. A search was made everywhere, but nothing could be heard of him after leaving his companions. The police were informed, and notices were issued, but for a week no tidings reached the parents of the missing youth. On Saturday afternoon, Mr. George Smith, undermanager at Baxenden Collieries, in company with Thomas Beckett a miner were examining the workings, and among others they went to the air shaft, and there were horror struck at finding the mangled form of the missing youth on the pit floor. The body was conveyed home. An examination on the surface of the ground by police constable Jennings showed marks on the wall surrounding the pit mouth. The pit is in a field behind Baxenden House, and is walled around with a wall eight feet high. The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death". (Accrington Times).

LEAH Henry - 1889 - 21/05/1889 – Age 34 – Miner. South Wheal, Crofty (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Deceased and his comrade, Hannibal Eathorne were engaged in driving an end at the 225 fathom level and were blasting with dynamite. Three holes were fired and as many reports distinctly heard. After about half an hour had elapsed the men returned to the end. Eathorne first worked in shovelling back the loose stuff for about a quarter of an hour, and then went back to rest a little while deceased with a pick began to loosen such of the holes’ burdens as had not been thrown out by the shots when an explosion occurred and blew off his head. It is supposed that the explosion was the result of the careless way in which dynamite was accustomed to be taken about in this mine. At the inquest Eathorne admitted that previously to firing the holes he took some of the cartridges from his locker into the end loose in his hand and laid them on the ground while waiting to put in the charges. Some of the dynamite, therefore, may have been left about and when struck with the pick by deceased exploded. In connection with this case the Mining Act was contravened in several particulars and I brought an action against the agent of the mine in consequence. The magistrates imposed a fine of £1 and costs in each of the informatious laid.
