NAISBIT Nicholas - 1882 - 27/04/1882 – Age 64 - Horse driver. Etherley, George Henry Stobart and Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Crushed between truck and frame at screens. Died on 30th.

NANCARROW George - 1880 - 02/04/1880 – Age 23 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Unexpected fall of ground.

NANKERVIS Henry - 1889 - 13/06/1889 – Age 42 - Mine agent. Levant (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Captain Nankervis was descending underground, accompanied by another agent of the mine, by means of the man engine. They had reached the 200 fathom level, the extent of the man engine rods, when deceased, who was leading, stepped off the rod and almost immediately disappeared. His colleague heard a noise and on looking down found Captain Nankervis had fallen through the man hole on to the next sollar a distance of 5 fathoms and had received severe cuts and bruises about the head. There was no evidence to show why deceased stepped into the shaft. It is supposed he forgot himself for the moment and thought he was at the bottom of the shaft as the rods terminated there. He lived a week after the accident.

NAPIER Henry - 1888 - 07/08/1888 – Age 34 – Collier. Hindley Field, Morris and Lee Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had just commenced work and had filled one tub, from coal got down the night before, when the top coal fell suddenly, capping two props. The place was well timbered but the props were overbalanced by an overhanging stone extending into the waste.

NASH James (injured) - 1885 - 08/04/1885 – Wagoner. Great Fenton, Staffordshire Coal and Iron Co., Stoke, Staffordshire. Killed by an explosion. 8 killed.

NASH John William - 1886 - 29/11/1886 – Age 14 – Trapper. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Crushed by tubs.

NASH William - 1889 - 30/01/1889 – Age 38 – Haulier. Big Pit, Blaenavon Co. Ltd., Blaenavon, Monmouth. While clearing a fall with other men a stone from the roof fell upon him.

NATRESS John - 1883 - 30/03/1883 – Age 20 – Hewer. Shildon, Shildon Coal Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Fall of coal while preparing a jud.

NAYLOR James - 1881 - 18/06/1881 – Age 17 – Hurrier. Middleton, Middleton Coal Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

NAYLOR James - 1887 - 29/03/1887 – Age 19 – Drawer. White Moss, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. These men with others when engaged pillaring back when a weight came over from the goaf and carried all the timber in their place and the roof fell in on them. They had two rows of props on one side of the drawing road and one on the props 4 feet apart and one chock at the entrance to the place. There were too many men crowded together in this working place and the timber was apparently sufficiently strong for a 6-feet seam. 3 killed.

NAYLOR John - 1882 - 20/04/1882 – Age 31 – Breaksman. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased was attempting to jump on to the buffer of a waggon when his hands slipped, and he fell under the wheels.

NAYLOR John - 1885 - 02/07/1885 – Age 57 – Dataler. Pewfall No.2, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was taking timber and immediately after drawing a certain prop, a heavy fall occurred, carrying with it the props where he was standing and fell upon him.

NAYLOR John - 1885 - 20/10/1885 – Age 45 – Collier. Hindley Green, John Scowcroft and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The roof came down between two faults where he had got the coal which he was then filling. The fall carried the timbering with it capping three props. The place was apparently well timbered.

NAYLOR Peter - 1882 - 15/06/1882 – Age 49 – Miner. Ellesmere, Bridgewater Trust, Worsley, Lancashire. Roof from pot hole. Died 20th Manchester Infirmary.

NAYLOR Thomas - 1882 – 15/12/1882 – Age 54 – Dataler. Brinsley, Barber Walker and Co., Langley Mill, Derbyshire. Fall of roof whilst repairing a door.

NAYLOR William - 1882 – 01/03/1882 – Age 58 – Bottomer. Pennyvenie, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. Fall of roof. Injured 27th.

NEALEY Thomas - 1884 – 19/01/1884 – Age 41 – Hewer. Dovenby, Dovenby Colliery Co., Dovenby, Cumberland. Fall of stone.

NEASER James - 1884 – 09/09/1884 – Age 24 – Rider. Rhondda Junction, Rhondda Junction Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Crushed by tram.

NEASHAM William - 1880 – 29/06/1880 – Age 19 – Inclineman. New Copley, Fryer and Co., Cockfield, Co. Durham. A full tub was pushed over bank end or chock and ran amain down bank, striking him at bottom with fearful force.

NEEDHAM Dennis - 1883 - 18/07/1883 – Age 23 – Stallman. Kilburne, T and G Small, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

NEEDHAM George - 1887 - 03/11/1887 – Age 25 – Miner. Mill Close (lead), Wass and Sons Trustees, Darley, Derbyshire. Explosion of firedamp 5 killed.

NEEDHAM H. - 1887 - 08/06/1887 – Age 41 – Collier. Monk Bretton, Monk Bretton Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Corf fell on his leg. Died 11th July.

NEEDHAM John - 1881 - 21/10/1881 – Age 27 – Collier. Dee Side, TL Holden, Queen’s Ferry, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was lowering a loaded tub down an incline 8 yards long by means of a winch, and by some means let the handle slip out of his hands and he was struck on the head.

NEEDHAM Thomas - 1880 - 10/02/1880 – Age 31 – Miner. Stockfield, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Chadderton, Lancashire. Roof stone falling from a break at the higher side of the level where they were beginning to work. It had four props under it. 2 killed.

NEEDHAM William - 1884 - 16/03/1884 - Age 19 – Labourer. Hornthorpe, J and G Wells Ltd., Eckington, Derbyshire. Struck by beam of a gin used in erecting a boiler chimney.

NEESHAM or MEASHAM John - 1880 - 08/09/1880 - Age 42 - Horsekeeper. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

NEIL David (injured) - 1889 - 30/03/1889 - Age 40 - Miner. Rock Ridge, Joseph Dobbs Co., Kilkenny, Ireland. Injured about the face by his shot going off when stemming with an iron stemmer contrary to the 12th. General Rule. It appeared that the men had refused to give up using iron stemmers allowing which to be continued and not enforcing the rule the owner on the 30th. April prosecuted by me at Castlecomer, and fined 10s. 6d. and costs.

NEIL Edward - 1881 - 28/11/1881 - Age 26 - Collier. Annocklodge, Annocklodge Coal and Oil Co., Irvine, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp. Suffocated.

NEIL John - 1882 - 25/08/1882 - Age 26 - Fireman. Broxburn, Hayscraig (shale), Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Uphall Linlithgow. Explosion of firedamp. Danks and Neil, without thought, went with naked lights into a place which they knew was unventilated. They all lived more than a week after the accident and could explain how it happened.4 killed.

NEILD R. (injured) - 1885 - 17/09/1885 - Age 32 - Miner. Bradford, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Ankle broken by falling while wrestling and joking with another miner before descending the pit. Written off as accidental.

NEILSON James - 1880 - 29/11/1880 - Age 30 - Brusher. Blantyre No.3 Splint, William Dixon Ltd., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

NEILSON John - 1884 - 12/09/1884 - Age 14 - Stonepicker. Home Farm, Hamilton McCulloch and Co., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggon which he was trying to stop at snibbing.

NEILSON Joseph - 1887 - 28/05/1887 - Age 22 - Miner. Udston, Udston Coal Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas 73 killed.

NEILSON Thomas (non-fatal) - 1884 - 23/09/1884 - Collier. Carmyle No.1, James Dunlop and Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

NELSON Bold - 1888 - 26/03/1888 - Age 57 - Miner. Newton No.1, Doe, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatally hurt by roof falling died 9th. It came from a slippery parting and fell between props near of a level which was three yards wide with old workings on the dip side.

NELSON J. - 1883 - 02/06/1883 - Age 27 - Miner. Stonehill, Roscow and Lord, Lancashire. Fall of roof at slip.

NELSON James - 1887 - 12/12/1887 - Age 60 - Shifter. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Broken leg and injury to rib by fall of stone. Died 30th December.

NELSON James - 1887 - 28/05/1887 - Age 16 – Miner. Udston, Udston Coal Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas 73 killed.

NELSON Joseph - 1884 - 31/03/1884 - Age 43 - Stoneman. Byers Green, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Explosion of a shot. He had lit the squib instead of the match by mistake, when the shot went off.

NELSON Mark - 1886 - 24/02/1886 - Age 54 - Not employed. Castle Eden, Castle Eden Co. Ltd., Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Run over by waggons and killed while trespassing on branches.

NELSON Peter - 1886 - 30/12/1886 - Age 42 - Miner. Croft Side Cannel, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof along a face of longwall work. It fell from a slip or break caused apparently by pressure during several months when the face was not being worked. Inspection and inquest attended, and further inspection after a way had been made through the fall. 1 killed 2 injured.

NELSON Robert (non-fatal) - 1885 - 29/07/1885 - Pony driver. Spittal Hill, Bardykes and Hallside Coal Co., Newton Roxburgh. Jammed by a hutch.

NELSON Robert - 1888 - 14/08/1888 - Age 36 - Miner. Bonyton No.8, Gilmour Anderson and Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at face.

NESBIT Robert - 1882 - 21/11/1882 - Age 20 - Collier. Bog, Hamilton McCulloch and Co., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Fell down the pit. The rope slipped off the drum and the cage fell 80 feet. 2 killed.

NESBITT John - 1884 - 24/08/1884 - Age 23 - Screener. Haswell, Haswell Shotton & Easington Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Crushed between waggons while removing them from screens.

NESLON Aaron (injured) - 1884 - 13/06/1884 - Underlooker. Bar-Gap, Hiram Robinson, Lancashire. Fall of roof in cut through.

NETHERWOOD J. - 1885 - 18/12/1885 - Age 46. Ravens Lodge, G and J Haigh, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Fell down pumping shaft.

NETTLE David - 1888 - 14/02/1888 - Age 22 - Hitcher. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Port Talbot, Glamorgan. While riding on the rope in front of full journey the first tram left the rails and he was crushed by the coals that fell off.

NETTLE William James - 1883 - 21/07/1883 - Age 35 - Shaftsman. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Was engaged putting linings around the main road below the 70 fathoms level, when he slipped and fell down to the 80 fathoms level, receiving injuries from which he died two days afterwards.

NEVILLE William - 1882 - 03/11/1882 - Owner. Old Heath, William Neville, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The winding chain broke as he was descending his own shaft. Injured 1st November, died this day.

NEVIN James - 1888 - 30/11/1888 - Age 45 - Sinker. Park, J and R Stone, Ashton, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A piece of stone fell from the side of the sinking pit eight yards up on to him. Frequent inspections had been made and all was apparently safe.

NEWBETT George - 1881 - 20/10/1881 - Age 14 - Screenboy. Shirland, Benton and Woodiwiss, Alfreton, Derbyshire. Crushed by waggon.

NEWBOLD Charles - 1889 - 17/05/1889 - Age 15 - Pony driver. Grassmoor, Grassmoor Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Run over by the workmen's train through slighting whilst the train was in motion entering the colliery yard on the branch railway.

NEWBOULD F. - 1887 - 03/05/1887 - Age 15 - Driver. Wheldale, Wheldale Coal Co., Castleford, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

NEWCOMBE Edward - 1883 - 06/01/1883 - Age 19 - Miner. Sortridge Consols (metalliferous), Sortridge Copper Mining Co., Tavistock, Devon. Irruption of water into a side tie that had been allowed to approach too close to a body of water dammed up by a choke in an old adit level that was being cleared out for the purpose of draining the mine. 2 killed.

NEWEY Thomas - 1881 - 13/04/1881 - Age 40 - Header. Pilsley No.2, Pilsley Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Removing a sprag from in front of a loaded tub on an incline when the tub struck him.

NEWMAN Charles W. - 1887 - 29/12/1887 - Age 25 - Hewer. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Fall of stone.

NEWMAN George - 1884 - 10/11/1884 - Age 53 - Pitman. Gantre, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. Fell off cage. He and another man were standing back-to-back on the cage examining the shaft and when about nine yards from the bottom Newman was heard to fall. The cage was moving very slowly. Both had lights and had been conversing just before. He probably overbalanced himself.

NEWMAN Jesse - 1880 - 19/10/1880 - Age 31 - Haulier. Cymmer, Cymmer Newman Colliery Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Falling under a tram of rubbish on way to tip.

NEWSOM J. - 1888 - 29/06/1888 - Byeworker. St. John’s, Locke and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

NEWTON David - 1880 - 30/12/1880 - Age 38 - Collier. Don Pedro, H Briggs Son and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

NEWTON Edward - 1887 - 16/02/1887 - Age 21 - Fireman. Haswell, Haswell Coal Co. Ltd., Haswell, Co. Durham. Was run over by trucks while shunting on the railway near to the colliery. Not comprised.

NEWTON Henry - 1885 - 17/06/1885 - Age 45 - Miner. Broomstair, Hyde and Hope Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof as he was engaged pulling coal the higher side of a level in the Great Mine. It fell from a slip at one side and tapered out to a feather edge on the other. It is said to have sounded solid when he tried it.

NEWTON Henry - 1888 - 20/01/1888 - Age 33 - Stallman. Wollaton, Wollaton Colliery Co., Wollaton, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof while repairing a roadway.

NEWTON J. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 - Age 38 - Contractor. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once, one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

NEWTON J. - 1886 - 08/11/1886 - Age 15. Box Ings, S Senior and Sons, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Suffocated by blackdamp.

NEWTON Joseph - 1880 - 10/03/1880 - Age 55 - Proptaker. Royton, Oldham Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Oldham, Lancashire. Roof falling as he was taking out chocks.

NEWTON Joseph - 1889 - 11/12/1889 - Age 84 - Labourer. Clay Cross, Clay Cross Coal and Iron Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Deceased was going to his work in the dark. He missed his way and fell over the side wall of a range of coke ovens some distance from the pit but belonging to the mine.

NEWTON R. - 1884 - 29/10/1884 - Age 32 - Hurrier. Corton Wood, Corton Wood Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

NEWTON Richard (injured) - 1880 - 11/03/1880 - Age 19 Waggoner. New Watergate, James Roscoe, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Horridge killed and Newton’s leg broken by roof stone filling where they were clearing a previous fall of roof on a level in the White Mine. 1 killed 1 injured.

NEWTON Thomas - 1880 - 05/03/1880 - Age 27 - Waggoner. Bankfield, John Speakman, Westleigh, Lancashire. Leg hurt by his tub getting off the rails on going round a curve on a slope. Died April 23rd.

NEWTON W. (injured) - 1883 - 12/05/1883 - Age 36 - Dayman. Ashton Moss, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fall of roof.

NEYND Fred - 1884 - 27/01/1884 - Age 44 - Ostler. Naval, Naval Steam Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed.

NICHOL John - 1880 - 10/09/1880 - Age 14 - Appt. mason. Blantyre No.2, William Dixon Ltd., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Run over by a wagon while attempting to sprag it.

NICHOL Thomas (non-fatal) - 1886 - 05/05/1886 - Collier. Newton No.2, James Dunlop and Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

NICHOLAS Evan - 1886 - 02/03/1886 - Age 19 - Engineman. Dowlais, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Run over by tram.

NICHOLAS Francis - 1880 - 31/01/1880 - Age 24 - Collier. Kirkwood, Summerlee Iron Co., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face.

NICHOLAS Phillip - 1889 - 11/06/1889 - Age 51 - Stallman. Glapwell, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of coal.

NICHOLAS Richard - 1880 - 23/02/1880 - Age 43 Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fall from a plank while working in a shaft.

NICHOLAS Thomas - 1884 - 28/11/1884 - Age 44 - Timberman. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Was with others bringing a new rod for repairing the lower part of the man-engine through the 275 fathoms level, whilst doing so a plank in the bottom of the level broke and he fell through to near the 295 fathoms level. Deceased had charge of the roads in this part of the mine, and could have all the timber and assistance that he wanted for repairs. On examination the plank was found to have been attacked by dry rot.

NICHOLL Thomas - 1884 - 25/11/1884 - Age 57 - Roadsman. Pumpherston (shale), Pumpherston Oil Co. Ltd., Uphall, Linlithgow. A stone fell from the roof and rolled down the incline and struck him.

NICHOLLAS Richard (injured) - 1888 - 09/05/1888 - Timberman. Tregurtha Downs (metalliferous), Marazion, Cornwall. While engaged in taking timber out of the skip a small stone fell through the shaft striking him in the back and injuring him slightly.

NICHOLLS ? (injured) - 1884 - 15/03/1884 - Hooker on. Broomstair, Hyde and Broomstair Colliery Co., Lancashire. Tubs on opposite gang became unhooked on engine brow. 2 injured.

NICHOLLS David - 1888 - 09/06/1888 - Age 13 - Screenman. Pontyberen, Pontyberen Collieries Co. Ltd., Llanelly Camarthen. Crushed by machinery of revolving screen. He had been playing during the meal time and was returning to his work but not by the proper road.

NICHOLLS Thomas (injured) - 1889 - 25/09/1889 - Age 45 - Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. The men were engaged in stopping and after having blasted three holes returned within a quarter of an hour to the pitch when a scale of ground came away on them. Prout was killed outright and his body was not extricated from the debris for a considerable time. Nicholls' injuries consisted of a fractured leg and thigh. The occurrence was evidently an accident as the men who were experienced and careful miners were seen to test the ground by sounding some little time before it came away and then there was apparently no danger. 1 killed 1 injured.

NICHOLS Joseph (injured) - 1885 - 22/01/1885 - Age 48 - Miner. Agecroft, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by some coal dropping on his neck.

NICHOLS Thomas Radford - 1889 - 30/11/1889 - Age 14 - Incline boy. Rawdon, Moira Colliery Co., Moira, Leicester. Run over by a train of full tubs on a self-acting incline, supposed to have been examining the points while the train was running.

NICHOLS William - 1883 - 13/09/1883 - Age 40 - Hewer. Marley Hill, J Bowes and Partners, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

NICHOLSON George - 1886 - 02/12/1886 - Age 21 - Putter. Elemore, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Explosion 28 killed.

NICHOLSON Henry - 1888 - 19/04/1888 - Age 22 - Engineman. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery and Brick Co., St. Helens, Cumberland. Explosion of gas. 35 killed.

NICHOLSON James M. - 1889 - 18/12/1889 - Age 22 - Truckman. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. While lowering some empty trucks towards the screens he fell off the brake and was run over.

NORMAN John (injured) - 1887 - 15/06/1887 - Age 35 - Miner. New Lester, James Roscoe, Lancashire. Leg injured on a tail rope by a tub that was knocked over the guard by a train which the gigger did not stop in time.

NORMAN John - 1888 - 20/09/1888 - Stone miner. Fred Norman’s Mines (metalliferous), Swanage, Dorset. While engaged in undercutting a seam of stone, a piece of the roof, which was overhanging the place where deceased was working, fell without warning crushing him to death. The stone that fell would have been taken down had it appeared unsafe but it came off at a joint which was not discernible.

NORMAN Walter (injured) - 1889 - 19/11/1889 - Age 29 - Miner. Court Hill (metalliferous), Swanage, Dorset. Whilst engaged at his usual work underground a stone toppled over from the floor of the mine and struck the man’s leg, breaking it.

NORMANTON John - 1887 - 26/07/1887 - Age 52 - Miner. Eston (ironstone), Blocklow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. While cutting a leg out from a piece of overhanging stone it suddenly fell on to him.

NORTH John - 1880 - 10/01/1880 - Age 43 - Pikeman. Denbigh Hall, W Bickley, Tipton, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. Injured on 27th December l879. Decease entered a headway, against express orders of the overman, and lighted some gas which had accumulated during the Christmas holidays. Died this day.

NORTH Richard - 1887 - 16/12/1887 - Age 50 - Collier. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was taking a tub into his working place, the first thing in the morning, and just as he got to the face a piece of the top coal fell out from between two sprags and caught him.

NORTHALL Richard - 1888 - 27/06/1888 - Age 42 - Engineman. Gawn, Noah Hingley and Sons, Old Hill, Staffordshire. Fall down a pumping shaft. 2 killed.

NORTHAM Henry - 1889 - 19/07/1889 - Age 39 - Haulier. Phoenix, Phoenix Colliery Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Run over by a tram, the pin of shaft having risen, allowing the tram to run back.

NORTHEY Charles - 1888 - 21/05/1888 - Age 21 - Labourer. Wheal Crebor (metalliferous), Tavistock, Devon. While attending to a tram waggon at surface which was being drawn by a waterwheel over an incline, he got in front of the car to uncouple it, before the latter had stopped and was jammed up against the frame at the head of the incline. The accident happened on the 5th May, and he died on the 21st.

NORTHY Francis - 1886 - 05/08/1886 - Age 17 - Door boy. Eastern Ocean, David Davies and Co., Ystrad, Glamorgan. While waiting for the haulier at a parting a collar or crown tree of a 9-feet pair of timber fell and killed him instantly. Only a small quantity of roof stone fell.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE William (injured) - 1880 - 12/03/1880 - Age 60 - Miner. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Hurt. Roof coal falling as he was setting a sprag.

NOWELL Alexander (injured) - 1885 - 27/04/1885 - Age 35 - Miner. Baxenden, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Overpowered for a short time in the Moleside workings by blackdamp, which issued from old workings in consequence of a fall in the airway. 2 injured.

NOWELL George - 1886 - 01/07/1886 - Age 56 - Drawer. Tyldesley 6 Feet, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Died this day from a rupture when lifting coal into his tub, June 22nd.

NUNN Charles - 1889 - 28/05/1889 - Age 46 - Hewer. Usworth, John Bowes and Partners, Usworth, Co. Durham. Fall of roof.

NUNN J. - 1885 - 21/04/1885 - Age 36 - Plane man. Fence, Rothervale Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Run over by corves.

NURSE George - 1889 - 16/10/1889 - Age 53 - Labourer. Springwell, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Staveley, Derbyshire. Taking down the brick arch of a Guibal fan, when part of it gave way and fell with deceased into the bottom of the fan race.

NUTALL George (injured) - 1886 - 01/08/1886 - Age 24 - Miner. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Lancashire. Burned by an explosion of firedamp as they were cleaning out the sough between Victoria and Owl Hole Pits. They were incautiously using open lights with respect to which arbitration Mr. Herbert Fletcher, the managing owner, was in process. 4 injured.

NUTALL Thomas - 1886 - 08/06/1886 - Age 24 - Fireman. Moss Arley, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had drawn two chocks and reset them nearer the face and was then knocking out a prop which it is supposed he had set temporarily when a fall of roof occurred and he was unable to get away in time.
