PAULL William - 1882 - 27/06/1882 – Age 20 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Cocking and Paull together with a miner called Trengove, were driving with a boring machine, the 250-fathoms level west of Podler’s engine shaft, two brothers named Jeffery being engaged in tramming the lode stuff broken. From 18 to 20 holes each, 8 feet in depth, had been bored in the end. At the time of the accident two rounds of holes had been blasted, and Tengove, the head man of the core, was at the dynamite locker, about 70 fathoms from the end, preparing the charges for the next and last blast; with him were Paull and Cocking, whilst the two brothers Jeffery were sitting down about 2 fathoms off eating their lunch. Cocking, who was assisting in preparing the charges, stuck his lighted candle on the side of the level directly over the dynamite locker, from which he took a candle to cut up into snuffs. He then proceeded to take his lighted candle but in doing so let it fall on the dynamite locker which contained, in addition two packets of dynamite, a box of detonators, some fuse, and candles. In a moment the contents of the locker caught fire and the dynamite exploded, killing Cocking and Joseph Jeffery, Paull receiving injuries from which he shortly afterwards died, Trengove and William Jeffery escaping in a miraculous manner.
