F? Ralph - 1883 - 21/03/1883 – Age 62 – Dataler. Gidlow Wigan, Iron and Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was assisting to repair an air road. They had set a bar and were clearing away some dirt to make room for another, when a fall took place knocking out the those already set.

FAGGAN John - 1882 - 15/08/1882 - Pony driver. Quarter, William Baird and Co., Denny, Stirling. Was run over by hutches.

FAIR Thomas - 1882 - 18/09/1882 – Age 50 – Collier. Bankhead, Misses Wigham, Hurlford, Ayrshire. Fall of roof.

FAIRBRIDGE William - 1888 - 09/11/1888 – Age 16 - Asst. onsetter. Towneley, Emma Stella Coal Co., Towneley, Co. Durham. Fell from hanging on to bottom of shaft.

FAIRBROTHER Henry - 1886 - 15/12/1886 – Age 30 – Collier. Bradley Hall, B and R Fisher, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of firedamp. Cause open lights.

FAIRBROTHER John - 1884 - 28/03/1884 – Age 59 – Dataler. Hindley Hall, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was set to build a pack alongside a road which had been newly ribbed. The fireman instructed him to build the pack before removing any of the props, but he appears to have knocked out one of the props which was rather in his way when a stone fell upon him from an old break.

FAIRCLOUGH John - 1888 - 23/11/1888 – Age 14 - Knocker off. Wigan Junction, Wigan Junction Colliery Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was riding up the incline on the loaded journey when the couplings between the second and third tubs broke and the others running amain with deceased he was thrown off and crushed. The rule forbidding persons to ride on the tubs did not appear from the evidence to have a been enforced.

FAIRCLOUGH Thomas - 1886 - 13/08/1886 – Age 34. Woodend, John Speakman, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in the north-west workings. 38 lost.

FAIRCLOUGH William - 1883 - 18/07/1883 – Age 33 – Proptaker. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased incautiously drew a chock without supporting the roof by means of temporary props thinking there was no danger but the roof came suddenly down and struck him.

FAIRHURST Humphrey (injured) - 1885 - 24/07/1885 – Age 32 – Miner. Gibfield, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Injured while passing with a tub along the level into which a drawer was bringing a tub from a roadway at the side. Accidental. The owners requested by letter to caution drawers to be careful in such places.

FAIRHURST John - 1886 - 07/06/1886 – Age 26 – Carpenter. Moston, Platt Brothers and Co., Lancashire. Fatal fall down No.3 sinking shaft whilst repairing the scaffold or cradle near the top of the shaft. His crowbar slipped whilst levering a piece of wood on the scaffold.

FAIRHURST Levi - 1881 - 22/06/1881 – Age 38 – Collier. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was working at his bottom coal, having set a prop under the tops, when the latter suddenly fell on him, and knocking out the prop.

FAIRHURST Samuel - 1881 - 23/03/1881 – Age 27 – Fitter. Minera (metalliferous), Wrexham. Explosion of dynamite and basting gelatine while preparing to make a large blast in an experimental drivage carried on with Captain Penrices new boring machine. 3 killed.

FAIRLESS Ralph - 1882 - 15/09/1882 – Age 38 – Miner. Red Vein (metalliferous), Weardale Iron and Co. Ltd., Weardale, Co. Durham. Fall of ironstone from roof striking his head.

FAIRLESS Thomas - 1889 - 06/06/1889 – Age 57 – Miner. Middlethorpe (metalliferous), Weardale Iron Co Ltd., Weardale, Co. Durham. While he was being taken along the level in a tub his head came in contact with the roof and his neck was dislocated.

FALDING W. - 1884 - 18/06/1884 - Age 30 – Inclineman. Thorncliffe, Newton Chambers and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Caught between endless rope and wheel.

FANNAN Jeremiah (non-fatal) - 1889 – 15/05/1889 – Miner. Carmyle No.1, James Dunlop and Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. Fall of fireclay from roof at working face.

FARAMOND Joseph - 1885 - 17/10/1885 – Age 40 - Sinker. Rishton, PW Pickup, Blackburn, Lancashire. With about ten other men Joseph was sinking a shaft at about a depth of 80 yards. A piece of wood weighing about 14 lb. fell from the top of the shaft and hit him on the shoulder. He was brought up the shaft immediately, and Dr. Barr was soon in attendance, but he expired about fifteen minutes later without speaking. Deceased leaves a widow and a large family. He was a native of Wigan, but lodged in Rishton. Accrington Gazette.

FARIE Bernard (non-fatal) - 1888 - 27/11/1888 - Brusher. Carmyle No.1, James Dunlop and Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. Explosion of powder. 2 injured.

FARMER James (injured) - 1887 - 23/05/1887 – Age 27 - Settman. Chanters, Fletcher Burrows & Co., Lancashire. Injured on railway siding. When pushing a waggon some waggons which were being shunted came against another waggon which started it and crushed him between the buffers.

FARMER John - 1889 - 27/09/1889 – Age 13 - Ridder. Silverdale No.6, Butterley Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. He got into the cage without his lamp and attempted to step out to get it just as the cage started to descend. He was crushed and fell down the shaft.

FARMER John - 1889 - 28/09/1889 – Age 34 - Labourer. Blackston, Blackston Mineral Co., Paisley, Renfrew. Fell down shaft.

FARNELL Encock - 1887 - 23/03/1887 – Age 32 – Pikeman. Harsden, Jinks and Marsh, Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Suffocated by carbonic acid gas. 4 killed.

FARNELL William - 1887 - 23/03/1887 – Age 39 - Overman. Harsden, Jinks and Marsh, Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Suffocated by carbonic acid gas. 4 killed.

FARNEY C. - 1881 - 25/06/1881 – Age 15 - Collier. Penybont, B Jayne and Co., Monmouth. Fall of coal. It had been tried ten minutes before and appeared safe.

FARNWORTH Arnold - 1884 - 30/05/1884 – Age 39 - Miner. Bridgewater No.2, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of top coal from a slip, Doe Mine.

FARNWORTH J. - 1883 - 06/01/1883 – Age 25 - Miner. Kersley, Samuel Scowcroft and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of roof at slips.

FARNWORTH Joseph (injured) - 1886 – Age - 23/12/1886 – Age 26 - Miner. Peel Hall, James Roscoe, Lancashire. Hand burned by powder. In preparing a shot a 2 oz. bobbin of powder ignited in his hand.

FARQUHAR John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 14/10/1889 – Age 17 - Horse driver. Dysart, Earl of Roslyn, Fife. Fell before tubs hand injured. Left the pit.

FARR John - 1885 - 04/03/1885 – Age 31 - Pikeman. Ocker Hill, Addenbookes and Co., Tipton, Staffordshire. When pulling coal from the side of an opening it fell suddenly and so injured him that he died the same evening.

FARR William - 1885 - 13/02/1885 – Age 24 – Collier. Rudry, Rudry Merthyr Steam & House Coal Colliery & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Glamorganshire. Fall of coal. The band between the coals had been removed the top coal was tried and sounded strong but when deceased and another man were filling a tram preparatory to leaving work it fell and he was killed on the spot.

FARRALL John - 1884 - 20/07/1884 – Age 18 – Haulier. Deep Pit, Coalbrook Vale Colliery Co., Monmouth. Deceased and two others were sitting in a place which appeared safe on the side of a slope, eating their dinner, when the side stone came away killing Farrall and slightly injuring the other men on the legs.

FARRAR Abram (injured) - 1888 - 23/03/1888 – Age 42 - Coal washer. Moston, Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Arm broken and ribs bruised by a revolving shaft catching his woollen jacket as he was leaning over to reach a pulley.

FARREL James (non-fatal) - 1887 - 28/12/1887 – Drawer. Barton Hill No.1, William Baird and Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Hands caught between chain and a pulley of a self acting incline.

FARREL P - 1883 - 25/06/1883 – Age 52 – Labourer. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Co., Glamorganshire. Explosion of firedamp. 6 killed.

FARRELL Edward (non-fatal) - 1889 - 18/02/1889 – Miner. Common No.6, Eglinton Iron Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp.

FARRELL John (injured) - 1886 - 23/01/1886 – Age 27 – Miner. Bank Hall, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Leg broken by a fall of roof slips in his working place. Accidental.

FARRELL John - 1885 - 23/04/1885 – Age 41 – Dataler. Brynn Hall, W and EF Crippin, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was crossing an old road where the top coal had been left standing. Before commencing work he had set a couple of props when a piece of top coal fell capping one of, the props. He ought to have had more timber set before commencing work.

FARRELL Patrick - 1883 - 25/06/1883 – Age 52 – Labourer. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Company. Rhymney, Glamorganshire. Explosion of gas 7 killed.

FARRELL William - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 23 – Loader. Mossfields, Hawley and Bridgwood Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Explosion 64 killed.

FARRELLEY Thomas - 1885 - 20/08/1885 – Age 21 – Labourer. Sutton Heath, Executors of late James Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was lowering a waggon under the screens and after lifting the break, was endeavouring to pass in front of it when he was crushed against another waggon standing there.

FARRIEMOD Joseph - 1885 - 13/10/1885 – Age 40 – Sinker. Rishton, PW Pickup, Lancashire. Fatal. At the sinking shaft a block wood was apparently carelessly thrown so as to fall down the shaft where it killed deceased. Sufficient proof could not be obtained to convict for the neglect, as the two men denied having seen the wood. A ledge round the edge of the shaft was recommended as a future safeguard.

FARRIMOND Frederick - 1883 - 17/12/1883 – Age 16 - Gang rider. Deep Hindley, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had taken the empty journey into the shunt but had not let it run far enough and when he started with the loaded journey the latter caught against the empty tubs. He tried to release them, without first stopping the journey and was knocked against a prop and crushed.

FARRIMOND Henry - 1884 - 14/11/1884 – Age 38 – Collier. No. 1 Crawford, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was drilling a hole in the coal when a stone fell from two slips and breaking off close to the face. The place was well timbered one prop being capped by the fall.

FARRIMOND Henry - 1887 - 11/01/1887 – Age 57 – Collier. Ince Arley, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This was a very heavy fall along the face of working place from between two slips one of which was on the head of coal. The working place was fairly timbered but deceased's son said they were unable to get props from the shunt to put up as they wished to do there being no supply of props in the usual place that morning.

FARRIMOND James - 1888 - 05/05/1888 – Age 17 – Dataler. Hunt Clough Royley, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal fall of top coal when he was trimming a manhole at the side of a gig-brow.

FARRINGTON John - 1889 - 07/11/1889 – Age 15 – Boy. Ellerbeck, Lancashire. Was assaulted by a boy, Cooper, who threw a stone and fractured his skull for which Cooper was prosecuted Chorley and fined half-a-crown and admonished. Non-Comprised.

FARRINGTON William (injured) - 1885 - 21/04/1885 – Age 16 - Pony driver. Chanters, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Leg injured between the front tub of his gang and the pony’s shafts when the tub got off the rails.

FAULD Pat (non-fatal) - 1884 - 18/02/1884 - Owen Collier. Britton-Calder, WS Dixon, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp 2 injured.

FAULDS Alexander (non-fatal) - 1889 - 09/01/1889 – Miner. Drumchapel No.1, William Dixon Ltd., Duntocher, Dumbarton. Struck by runaway hutch on a cuddy brae.

FAULDS Allan (non-fatal) - 1886 - 28/05/1886 – Collier. Portland No.6, Eglinton Iron Co., Hurlford, Ayrshire. Injured by shot fired by a neighbouring workman.

FAULDS Allan (non-fatal) - 1888 - 02/11/1888 – Fireman. Caprington No.36, WS Cunningham, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Explosion of gunpowder.

FAULDS John - 1881 - 30/09/1881 – Age 42 – Sinker. Hamilton Hill No.2, Stone Coal Co., Glasgow, Lanarkshire. When looking over the cage he came in contact with a bunten and fell down the shaft.

FAULKNER G. (injured) - 1883 - 30/08/1883 – Age 26 – Miner. Rose Hill, Samuel Scowcroft and Sons, Lancashire. Cartridge trying fuse.

FAULKNER Joseph - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 52. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed. Wife and 1 child.

FAVELL C. - 1881 - 14/06/1881 – Age 18 – Trammer. Thorncliffe, Newton Chambers and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

FAWCETT George - 1886 - 27/08/1886. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. The body of a person named George Fawcett not connected with the colliery found in the reservoir. Not comprised by the Act.

FAWCETT Richard - 1889 - 26/02/1889 – Age 49 – Manager. Hampton Tower Clough air shaft, Executors of Col. Hargreaves Clough, Lancashire. Fatal by the breakage of rope which was being used on a crab winch in exploring down the old air shaft. It was a cotton rope one and one eighth in diameter and had only been used three times since the previous May when it was new. The deceased manager himself inspected the rope before using it. 2 killed. Inspection and inquest attended.

FAWCETT Robert - 1882 - 30/09/1882 – Age 52 – Screenman. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. While crossing the sidings he was caught by a loco and run over.

FEARN Frank - 1880 - 11/10/1880 – Age 19 – Trammer. Dodworth, Silkstone and Dodworth Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

FEARON Henry - 1882 - 07/02/1882 – Age 26 – Miner. Mouzell (metalliferous). Askam and Mouzell Iron ore Co. Lancashire. Knocked down lower portion of a shaft by cage while crossing shaft at upper eye.

FEARON Henry - 1887 - 25/04/1887 - 1887 – Sinker. Winder (metalliferous), Parkside Mining Co., Winder, Lancashire. Injured on 6th. December 1886, by slipping of rod of boring machine causing fracture of leg. As he was nearly well the doctor thought it better to take a small piece of dead bone out of his leg and administered chloroform for the purpose, from which he died. Copper stemmer, when the charge exploded causing injuries which resulted in his death. This hole had been charged with blasting powder and as the hole was in hard blue ore and was very much shattered by a previous shot it is probable that two small pieces of metal were knocked together, causing a spark to ignite the loose powder in the shot hole.

FEDDEN S. (injured) - 1883 - 06/08/1883 – Age 15 - Ginney tenter. Millerfold, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Tub on slope.

FEE John - 1880 - 20/10/1880 – Age 14 – Drawer. Bothwell Park No.1, William Baird and Co., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Tub went over him on drawing road.

FEENEY James - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 21 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

FELLOWS Samuel - 1884 - 23/07/1884 – Age 49 – Pikeman. Ebenezer, Ebenezer Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Explosion of gas in a sinking pit. 3 killed. Died same evening.

FELTON George (injured) - 1882 - 12/01/1882 – Age 41 – Miner. Lilleshall (metalliferous), Newport. Slipped and fell while endeavouring to prize down a piece of limestone with a crowbar. 20 days off.

FELTON J. - 1886 - 16/03/1886 – Age 54 – Shunter. Birch House, Stanier and Co., Chesterton, Staffordshire. Crushed between truck and wall.

FELTON William (injured) - 1886 - 15/07/1886 – Age 30 – Sinker. Ellerbeck, Arley Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by explosion of compressed or bobbin powder which ignited in his hand from the spark of a candle wafted by the air. Apparently his own want of sufficient care.

FENN Robert - 1885 - 08/04/1885 – Age 50 – Bandsman. Bentley, G Williams and Sons, Walsall, Staffordshire. Rock fell from roof at a fault slip and killed him instantly.

FENTON J. - 1887 - 14/03/1887 – Age 27 – Collier. Thornhill, ET Ingham, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 6th Apr.

FENWICK George - 1880 - 04/08/1880 – Age 30 – Shifter. Heworth, Owners of Heworth Colliery, Heworth, Co. Durham. Fall of stone. Buried at St. Mary Heworth.

FENWICK James - 1886 - 10/12/1886 – Age 12 – Driver. Cowpen, Cowpen and North Seaton Coal Co., Cowpen, Northumberland. Crushed by tubs.

FENWICK John - 1888 - 11/05/1888 – Age 6 - School boy. Pelton, Fell, Lord Dunsany and Partners, Chester-le-Street Co. Durham. Crushed between two tubs while playing with them near the pit he had no right to be there.

FENWICK Robert - 1885 - 04/12/1885 – Age 30 – Sinker. North Elswick, Elswick Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Stone fell on him from side of sinking pit.

FENWICK William - 1889 - 18/01/1889 – Age 54 – Hewer. Houghton, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Fall of roof from a slip in a broken jud.

FERGUSON Hugh - 1886 - 18/09/1886 – Age 19 – Collier. Springside No.11, A Kenneth and Sons, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at face, stone.

FERGUSON James - 1882 - 07/09/1882 – Age 19 – Shifter. Seaton Delaval, Seaton Delaval Coal Co., Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof.

FERGUSON John (non-fatal) - 1885 - 21/01/1885 – Engineman. Carnkirk (fireclay), Carnkirk Fireclay Co., Chryston, Explosion of gunpowder. 2 injured.

FERGUSON John (non-fatal) - 1886 - 28/01/1886 – Oversman. Drumgrange No.9, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. The Oversman was taking the miners to start work in a place that had been standing for some time and had not been examined and which there was firedamp. 3 injured.

FERGUSON John (non-fatal) - 1888 - 25/04/1888 – Drawer. Glengyron No.2, Eglington Iron Co., Cumnock, Lanarkshire. Fell while drawing behind a hutch and broke his leg.

FERGUSON Thomas - 1885 - 02/11/1885 – Age 21 – Bricklayer. Hallside, James Dunlop and Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Fall of a brick wall at which he was engaged.

FERGUSON Thomas - 1888 - 12/04/1888 – Age 16 – Coupler. Seaton Burn, John Bowes and Partners, Seaton Burn, Northumberland. Caught by set on engine plane.

FERGUSON William (non-fatal) - 1887 - 16/04/1887 – Collier. Lanemark No.2, Lanemark Coal Co., New Cumnock, Ayrshire. Fell while jumping off race of hutches at top of dook.

FERNIOUGH Henry - 1880 - 21/01/1880 – Riddler. Leycett, Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

FERRIE Charles - 1884 - 20/09/1884 – Drawer. Rochsoles, John A McCallum, Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while brushing, long wall.

FERRIER Robert - 1888 - 15/02/1888 – Age 19 – Collier. Niddrie, Niddrie & Benhar Coal Co. Ltd., Liberton, Edinburgh. Pushed tub into open incline when carriage was not there.

FERRY Thomas - 1888 - 03/04/1888 – Age 21 – Putter. Binchester, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. While bringing two tubs outbye one of them got off the way and knocked out a prop which caused a fall of stone to come over him he ought only to have had one tub.

FEWKES Edward - 1885 - 24/07/1885 – Age 56 – Stallman. Whitwick, Whitwick Colliery Co., Coalville, Leicester. Fall of roof whilst repairing the roadway.

FEWS J. - 1881 - 20/04/1881 – Age 46 – Collier. Golden Valley, A Brain, Gloucester. He knocked out a prop thinking the top was strong and it fell upon him.

FIELD James - 1887 - 12/08/1887 – Age 30 – Collier. Blaenclydach, Forest Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of rock roof in a skip on heading side near a roll. There were no supports within 4 yards of face. The stone was 12ft. x 4ft.

FIELDEN Richard - 1886 - 01/11/1886 – Age 16 – Drawer. Townely Drift, Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Taken ill in the mine and died on pit bank apparently from over exertion in pushing tubs up brow.

FIELDING James (injured) - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Moorfield Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas 68 killed.

FIELDING James - 1887 - 17/06/1887 – Quarryman. Britannia Stone Mine (metalliferous), Butterworth and Brooks, Lancashire. Man accidentally drowned whilst bathing near the quarries. Not comprised by the Act.

FIELDING Thomas James - 1888 - 22/12/1888 – Age 38 - Engine timer. Duxbury, Thomas Whittle, Lancashire. Fatally struck by flywheel of the underground pumping engine whilst he was helping to move the engine centre after repairs.

FIFE William - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 44 – Stoneman. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

FINCH John - 1881 - 16/03/1881 – Age 13 - Pony driver. Ravenhead, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire.

FINCH John - 1882 - 20/11/1882 – Age 65 – Pitman. Ravenhead, St. Helens Collieries Co Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had completed his inspection of the shaft, which he considered safe, and was attending to some siphon pipes about 50 yards from the bottom when something fell down the shaft, striking deceased. A great part of this shaft is unlined, and representations have been made to the owners that it is not safe for men to pass up and down until it has been lined.

FINN John - 1886 - 20/03/1886 – Age 59 - Shaftman. Cwmanantddu, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He had been unloading rubbish off staging in the pit for about half an hour when one of the bytes supporting the stage broke and he fell about 47 feet. He died the next day.

FINNEGAN Thomas - 1883 - 11/12/1883 – Age 60 - Labourer. St. Helens, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Some waggons were being put into position at the screen by means of a wire rope and a stationary engine when the rope broke and a waggon running back struck the deceased. The rope was an old one and had broken on previous occasions, but the foreman had hitherto believed that in case of breakage no one could come to any harm.

FINNEY William - 1884 - 21/10/1885 – Age 32 - Collier. White Moss, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting his dinner with some other men when they heard the roof begin to weight. They decided to go in and bring their tools out, and before deceased could get back the roof came in, capping from 80 to 100 props.

FINNEY William - 1886 - 23/09/1886 – Age 18 - Drawer. White Moss, White Moss Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The men were putting up a bar under a pot hole and had set a temporary prop when the stone fell out knocking out the bar and props and falling on deceased.

FIRTH John William (injured) - 1885 – 02/07/1885 – Age 14 – Waggoner. Blainscough Hall, Arley Blainscough Hall Colliery Co., Lancashire. Arm broken. A piece of coal from the face fell and caught him. His father allowed him to fill his tub in front of the coal which was holed and he was engaged getting down. The father was punished for allowing the lad to be there.

FISHER Daniel - 1883 - 25/06/1883 – Age 44 - Road ripper. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. Injured June 23rd. When pulling down rock with a pike it suddenly gave way and the handle of the pike struck him so forcibly as to rupture his stomach.

FISHER John - 1888 – 12/04/1888 – Age 18 – Haulier. Eastern, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Fall of roof, 15ft. long, 8ft. wide in a narrow heading 20yds. from face where it was doubled timbered every 6ft. Bute seam. Very slanty roof.

FISHER Joseph - 1887 – 29/04/1887 – Age 30 – Collier. Moss, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Pemberton, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Caused by a fall of roof in drawing road knocking down the bars which appeared to be of insufficient strength the road being a very wide one.

FISHER Samuel (non-fatal) - 1885 – 07/03/1885 – Brusher. Gartshore No.7, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Stirling. Explosion of firedamp when preparing to redd a fall. 3 injured.

FISHER Thomas (injured) - 1885 – 12/06/1885 – Gangrider. Royton, Oldham Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured in the engine brow. Having lost the trailer from behind the gang they rode down on the gang train looking for it and having passed it unobserved they were riding up again when the train caught the lost trailer and was thrown off the rails. An inadvertency. 2 injured.

FISHER Thomas - 1885 – 07/12/1885 – Age 44 – Collier. Brynmally, Thomas Clayton, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was holing when a pot hole fell out on to him. The roof was exceptionally good and on that account the timbering had been neglected.

FISHER William - 1883 – 12/10/1883 – Age 41. Wharncliffe Carlton, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas 20 killed.

FISHWICK William - 1885 – 28/09/1885 – Age 59 – Dataler. Rainford, Rainford Coal Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. Caused by a fall in one of the main roads. The roof was generally very good but it appears to have been shaken at this point by getting coal alongside. The roof was not secured by timber it being considered strong and safe.

FITTON Hugh (injured) - 1887 – 04/05/1887 – Age 34 – Filler. Burton Nook, Denton Colliery Co., Lancashire. Slipped on the level and hurt his foot.

FITTON John - 1884 – 04/11/1884 – Age 38 – Dayman. Alkrington, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of stone in widening the tunnel.

FITTON W.H. (injured) - 1885 – 13/10/1885 – Age 18 – Taker-off. Junction, Mountain Mine Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured slightly while riding down a steep engine brow. A flat stone from slips in the roof dropped on the rails and slid down after them and coming in contact with the train two of the tubs became uncoupled and ran down 40 or 50 yards to the bottom. Datallers or daymen had been working in this part of the brow during the night and left it as they and the fireman considered in good order. 5 injured.

FITTON William (injured) - 1888 – 14/06/1888 – Age 56 – Miner. Low Crompton, Glegg, Oldham, Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co., Lancashire. Ribs broken and body bruised by roof falling from slips at his working face when he was setting a prop the fireman having pointed out to him that one was required.

FITZPATRICK Thomas (injured) - 1886 – 16/06/1886 – Age 30 – Gang rider. Ellerbeck, King Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Injured. In stepping off the rope he stumbled over a bit of dirt and fell between the tubs. The place was only 2 feet 7 inches high and he was not provided with a seat his main dependence whilst riding being by resting on the rope and holding with his hands. The riding to be discontinued in future.

FITZPATRICK William (non-fatal) - 1888 – 28/02/1888 – Collier. Govan No.6, William Dixon Ltd., Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Overwinding of the cage on which they were being lowered struck the cage seat forcibly and injured 3.
