UNSWORTH Edward (injured) - 1886 - 22/01/1886 – Age 15 – Drawer. New Water Gate, James Roscoe, Lancashire. Arm broken by a following drawer overtaking him and crushing him between the two tubs. There was a brattice sheet which prevented their seeing each other. The owner written to, to necessity and enforcing more care.
UNSWORTH James - 1883 - 18/01/1883 – Age 55 – Collier. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. A heavy fall of coal and roof through slips carried the timber before it and fell on him. The place had been timbered in a manner which might fairly have been expected to keep it safe.
UNSWORTH John - 1880 - 02/02/1880 – Age 19 – Drawer. Mains, Cross Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. While drawing timber with his father the top coal fell unexpectedly.
UNSWORTH Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 08/11/1888 – Age 45 – Miner. Shakerley, Nelson William, Ramsden, Lancashire. Crushed, one between each buffer in passing between railway waggons at the screens some other waggons that were being brought down having bumped against another and caused it to move. The brakesman bringing the waggons called out but the colliers were busy reading their work ticket and not on the alert. 2 killed.
UNSWORTH Richard - 1889 - 04/02/1889 – Age 56 – Dataler. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was assisting to timber a part of the main brow and does not
appear to have taken sufficient precautions to protect himself after removing the old bars when a stone fell upon him.
UNSWORTH Robert - 1881 - 18/06/1881 – Age 22 – Drawer. Downall Green, Thomas Stone and Son, Ashton, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The bottom coal had been blown down, and the collier then tried to get the tops down, but failed to do so. He then allowed the drawer to load the bottom coals without propping the tops when the latter fell on the deceased.

UNSWORTH Thomas (injured) - 1888 - 05/11/1888 – Age 33 – Miner. Tyldesley 6 Foot, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Legs broken by tubs. He was standing at the bottom of his gig brow with a loaded tub, too near the side, when the tub was caught by a passing train.

UNWIN James - 1881 – 12/11/1881 – Age 15 – Joiner. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. While riding in cage to bank, while another man with some metal pipes was on the cage top, the pipes struck the side knocking cager out of guides and he fell to the bottom 60 yards.
UNWIN Samuel - 1880 - 24/11/1880 – Age 60 – Engineman. Biddulph Valley, R Heath and Son, Stoke, Staffordshire. Clothes got entangled in machinery.
UPFOLD Frank (non-fatal) - 1887 - 05/10/1887 – Collier. Corbeiknowe, Mrs Hunter, Bannockburn, Stirling. Fall of mid stone.
UREN Arthur (injured) - 1889 – 07/12/1889 – Age 26 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Whilst ringing the knocker at the 200 fathom level a stone came down the shaft and struck the man on his right hand inflicting some slight injury.
UREN James - 1885 - 29/12/1885 – Age 22 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Deceased had fired two holes in the bottom of a winze and was being drawn up by a windlass when the rope (a small steel one five sixteenth inch in diameter) broke and deceased fell a distance of about 18 feet to the bottom of the winze. Shortly afterwards the two holes exploded about deceased, and killed him. There was a chain ladder to climb up by but the fall had stunned deceased.
UREN Nicholas (injured) - 1888 - 30/04/1888 – Age 25 – Labourer. West Wheal Seton (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. While wheeling a barrow on the dressing floors fell off a plank and broke his leg.
URMSTON William - 1886 - 13/08/1886 – Age 17 – Woodend. John Speakman, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in the north-west workings. 38 lost.
URQUHART William - 1889 - 05/09/1889 – Age 18 – Bottomer. Pencuick, Shotts Iron Co Ltd., Edinburgh. Suffocation by smoke. 63 killed.
USEN Thomas - 1884 - 17/10/1884 – Age 36 – Hewer. North Lintz, F McClean, Co. Durham. Fall of coal.
USHER George - 1888 - 24/07/1888 – Age 56 – Dataler. Sherdley, Whitecross Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, with other men, were renewing bars and had got the new ones in when on drawing out a broken bar the whole of the bars fell from a side weight coming against them.

VALE Walter - 1887 - 02/08/1887 – Age 37 – Collier. White Moss, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was turning a full tub on a steep brow to hang it on to the rope but having neglected to put on the drag it overpowered him and running down brow crushed him.

VARKER Peter (injured) - 1888 - 09/11/1888 – Miner. Tregurtha Downs (metalliferous), Marazion, Cornwall. Working in a stope at the back of the 67 fathom level. A scale of ground came away and fell on him, bruising him badly.
VARLEY Arthur - 1882 - 16/08/1882 – Age 26 – Loader. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of coals and dirt whilst holing in a nine feet wide heading.

VAUGHAN C. - 1883 - 10/09/1883 – Age 36 – Flueman. No.15, Ebbw Vale, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. Fell out of cage 65 yards from the bottom of the pit.
VAUGHAN David (injured) - 1883 - 04/12/1883 – Age 50 – Miner. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. He was filling a tram in a level from a pass and a stone fell on his foot. Seven and a half weeks off.
VAUGHAN G. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 55 – Labourer. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.
VAUGHAN John - 1884 - 15/08/1884 – Age 31 – Blower. Hall End, Hall End Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Killed when holing by a fall of coal over the sprags.
VAUGHAN John - 1885 - 23/01/885 – Age 37 – Collier. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made. A heavy fall of roof occurred across the face of deceased’s working place carrying two or three props before it. The place was fairly timbered but the fall was caused through slips in the strata.
VAUGHAN John - 1888 - 13/06/1888 – Age 12 - Door boy. Coalbrook Vale Deep, Coalbrook Vale Colliery Co., Nantyglo, Monmouth. While lying resting back in the road, where he and the men with whom he worked had taken their food, a stone weighing about three pounds dropped from the roof upon and apparently injured his bowels. The road was 5.5 to 6 feet height. He walked home (about two miles) with assistance but died that night.
VAUGHAN Joshua - 1880 - 10/03/1880 – Age 25 – Collier. Western Merthyr, Western Merthyr Coal Co., Clydach, Swansea Valley, Glamorgan. Killed whilst riding up an engine plane.
VAUGHAN N. - 1886 - 14/12/1886 – Age 37 – Collier. Old Park, Heybridge Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of roof.
VAUGHAN Richard - 1887 - 06/06/1887 – Age 25 – Collier. Eastern, Ocean Coal Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof 6ft. x 4ft. x 1ft. thick in middle. There were props close to the stone.
VAUGHAN Samuel - 1886 - 20/12/1886 – Age 76 – Collier. Cwm, Cwm Colliery Co., Monmouth. Injured by trains and died the following day. He followed a journey out on to a double parting, and while standing there some others came behind him and he was crushed. There was space at the side where would have been safe.

VEAL Christopher - 1887 - 28/04/1887 – Age 13 – Collier. Cwmneol, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberaman, Glamorgan. Run over by journey of empty trams while he was coming out from work.
VEAL or BAEL Samuel - 1881 - 26/01/1881 – Age 57 – Banksman. South Hetton, South Hetton Coal Co., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Leg broken and otherwise crushed about body by brakesman starting cage while he was talking side chains off. Died 7th Feb.
VEILE Matthew - 1883 - 16/07/1883 – Age 20 – Fireman. Victoria Garesfield, Messrs Priestman and George, Piele, Co. Durham. Run over by waggons on surface.

VERCOE Frederick - 1885 – 01/07/1885 – Age 18 – Putter. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Crushed in chest while coupling tubs. Died on 20th inst.
VIAL Charles - 1882 – 14/08/1882 – Age 19 – Miner. West Basset (metalliferous), West Basset Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Vial, with others, was occupied in taking timber out of the skip at the 144 fathoms level when a man, called William Henry Hockin, entered the platt and signalled for the skip to be wound the 124 fathoms level, and on its moving, and before the man in charge of the knocker line at the 144 fathoms level could signal hold fast Vial was crushed by the moving skip between the timber and the ground. Hockin acted contrary to the rules of West Basset Mine and of every mine in the county, and is answerable for Vial’s death.

A fall of roof rock about 12 yards long, 3 yards wide, 2 to 3 feet thick on one side and feather-edged at the other, it fell at the face of the coal, from its size it would give no warning by sounding; it was released from a fault, at the thick side, and the timber set under it was crushed down. 3 killed.

VINCENT Richard (injured) - 1889 – 09/08/1889 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Vincent, by some means, got his foot entangled in the flat rods at the 234 fathom level. The injuries he received were not serious.

VINES William Henry - 1884 – 06/02/1884 – Age 17 – Trammer. Wallsend, Follop and Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. In pulling a tram of coal on to an incline his head came in contact with a prop. He walked home about three miles, apparently little the worse, but died next day of suffusion of blood on the brain.
VIRK William - 1883 – 22/05/1883 – Age 18 – Putter. Washington, Washington Coal Co., Washington, Co. Durham. Struck by crank of ventilating engine.
VIVIAN Silas - 1887 – 21/01/1887 – Age 29 – Fireman. Rivin, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal blow from leg of coupling which sprang out from side pressure and struck his head as he was taking out a pair of timbers. Died 23rd.
VIZARD William - 1880 – 13/11/1880 – Age 58 – Collier. Brynn Moss, Smethurst Hoyle and Grime, Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased strained himself when lifting a stone.
VOWLES J. - 1881 – 19/05/1881 – Age 23 – Driver. Swan, Swan Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. The deceased was bringing a full tub out of the work when it jumped off the rails, and knocking the timber out allowed the roof to fall, and killed him on the spot.
VOYSEY William - 1881 – 21/07/1881 – Age 67 – Wasteman. Cramlington, Amelia WA Potter and Co., Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland. Fall of stone.
