O’BRIEN John - 1886 - 28/07/1886 – Age 20 – Chain runner. Holmes (shale), Holmes Oil Co Ltd., Bowburn, Linlithgow. It is supposed a piece of shale off a passing tub ran above incline and struck him.

O’BRIEN Pat - 1888 – 31/07/1888 – Age 38 – Hewer. Cornsay, Ferens and Love, Durham, Co. Durham. Severely crushed on engine plane he was coming out without a lamp and met the set of tubs. Died 7th Sept.

O’BRIEN Thomas - 1884 – 23/06/1884. Navvy Harwarden, Harwarden Collieries Co. Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Deceased was not employed by the colliery but was engaged loading up ballast for the railway company, and was run over by the waggons whilst so employed.

O’BRINE Michael - 1882 – 04/05/1882 – Age 37 – Collier. New Boston, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was drawing a chock, when his mate called out to him that the roof was falling and before he could get away, it fell upon him.

O’DONALD John - 1889 – 13/07/1889 – Age 39 – Shaft repairer. Bog Hamilton, McCulloch and Co., Lanarkshire. Fell down shaft.

O’DONNELL Hugh - 1882 – 06/03/1882 – Age 40 – Collier. Balbardie, Henry Walker, Bathgate, Linlithgow. Fall of side at stooping while holing without sprags. 2 killed.

O'NEIL Robert - 1884 – 20/03/1884 – Age 20 – Collier. Burnt Broom, Dunn Bros., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. While drawing off a loaded hutch, at a low scaffold, the cage was moved upwards and the hutch falling back drew the deceased with it into the shaft.

O’NEIL James - 1881 – 31/08/1881 – Age 32 – Collier. Pennyvennie No.9, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

O’NEIL James - 1886 – 01/03/1886 – Age 15 – Pony driver. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The lad was found dead between the pony and tub in an inclined road. It is supposed that he was taking the tub down hill, went in front of it, contrary to orders, the pony going loose in front. The draw chain of the pony caught in a sleeper and the tub coming on, the boy was caught between the pony and tub.

O’NEILL John (injured) - 1889 – 11/10/1889 – Miner. Evishnably (metalliferous), Mount Cashel Iron Ore Co., Co. Antrim, Ireland. Injured by his shot, as he returned thinking it had fired, three shots were being fired in adjoining places one of which it seems he thought was his. Inquiry.

O’ROARKE Patrick - 1887 – 22/11/1887 – Age 42 – Collier. Moss Arley, Pearson and Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was preparing to set a prop when a large stone fell from between two bud slips of whose presence he was aware. He appears to have delayed setting the prop too long.

O’RORKE W. (non-fatal) - 1885 – 17/03/1885 – Reddsman. Bartonshill No.1, William Baird and Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. By being capsized from a bogie in which he was riding.

OAKELEY J. - 1889 – 15/11/1889 – Age 40 – Collier. Fryston, Fryston Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 13th Dec.

OAKES Edmund - 1881 – 23/06/1881 – Age 37 – Hewer. South Benwell, W Cochrane Carr, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland. Fall of stone.

OAKES George - 1883 – 02/10/1883 – Age 19 – Drawer. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased, and another man, were going up the engine plane from their work when the empty journey was going down and neglected to get into a refuge place until it was too late. Deceased slipped on a pulley as he reached the refuge place and the journey came on to him. This accident was due to the reckless haste with which the men were making their way to the pit bottom.

OAKLEY John - 1882 – 13/07/1882 – Age 47 – Pikeman. Prince of Wales, Dudley Colliery Co., Dudley, Worcester. A large mass of coal fell from the roof and rolling down the slope of the shutt crushed deceased to death in its descent.

OAKLEY T. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 21 – Corporal. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

OAKS Seth - 1882 – 23/09/1882 – Loader. Slappenfield, Harecastle Co., Stoke, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from side of level.

OATMAN James (non-fatal) - 1889 – 19/12/1889 – Age 55 – Blacksmith. Durie, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Leg crushed by pipe. Not yet resumed.

OATS William - 1889 – 25/02/1889 – Age 61 – Timberman. Botallock (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Deceased's comrade was at home ill on the day of the accident and when Oats was last seen alive, by some tributers about the middle of the day, he was engaged in clearing the skip shaft. Not arriving at his home at the usual time his wife came to the mine to make inquiries. A search was made mid he was found in an out-of-the-way place dead, having fallen about 8 or 10 feet, pitching on his head. How He got there is only a matter of conjecture.

OBERN Jacob - 1886 – 22/02/1886 – Age 46 – Haulier. Edford, Edford Colliery Co., Somerset. Killed by an explosion of firedamp. 2 killed.

ODGERS John - 1883 – 15/05/1883 – Age 38 – Foreman. Snailbeach (metalliferous). Explosions of unseen remnants of dynamite from blows of a drilling machine on the rock near it. Odgers was skilled. Hewitt had his right arm broken, knee cap splinters and has lost an eye. 44 weeks off. Rowson had a finger broken and was still unable to work March 1884. Preace was much cut about the head and face. 15 weeks off. 1 killed 4 injured.

ODGERS Joseph (injured) - 1888 – 20/07/1888 – Age 21 – Miner. Wheal Uny (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. Having asked for leave to ascend an hour earlier and the request being granted the injured man being afraid he would be late for his appointment at surface attempted to ride on the skip. When he came near the surface the rope broke and the skip went down with him and when he was discovered it was found that his thigh was broken and he had received other injuries. It was entirely against orders to ride on the skip. The reason assigned for the breaking of the rope was that the skip road had got out of order as the rope was examined on the day previously and a new splice put in.

ODGETT Robert - 1884 – 06/11/1884 – Age 34 – Loader. Bretby Newhall Park, Countess of Chesterfield, Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Fall of roof in roadway.

OGDEN ? - 1887 - 18/01/1887 – Pumpman. Dewsnap, Dukinfield Co., Dukinfield. Cheshire. Killed by cage coming on him.

OGDEN George (injured) - 1886 – 07/06/1886 – Age 21 – Miner. Ashton’s Field, Cannel Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall from between props it came suddenly from a slippery facing. 1 killed 1 injured.

OGDEN Robert - 1880 – 01/01/1880 – Age 51 – Miner. Oak Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Hollinwood, Lancashire. Roof falling from between two slips. Black mine.

OGERSS Thomas (injured) - 1882 – 23/01/1882 – Age 20 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous), Wrexham, Denbigh. Explosion of remnants of dynamite from a previous blast while working with a hammer and moil to prepare a place for drilling a fresh hole. Two fingers of right hand blown off; face and left foot injured. 6 weeks off.

OGILVIE John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 18/02/1889 – Miner. North Motherwell No.2, Merry and Cunninghame, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face.

OGILVIE William (non-fatal) - 1889 – 01/10/1889 – Miner. Dalziel No.3, Johan McAndrew and Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

OGLEY J. - 1883 – 20/04/1883 – Age 19 – Hurrier. Denby Lane, Joe Kitson, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

OLD Joseph - 1883 – 29/01/1883 – Age 15 – Collier's boy. Dinas Isha, Daniel Thomas and Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Fell under trams.

OLDHAM Alexander (injured) - 1880 – 28/07/1880 – Age 43 – Miner. Enfield, Dunkenhalgh Coal Co. Ltd., Church, Lancashire. Caught by a stone falling.

OLDHAM James (injured) - 1884 – 17/01/1884 – Age 30 – Miner. Broomstair, Hyde and Broomstair Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fall of roof stone from two joints.

OLDHAM James - 1883 – 25/02/1883 – Age 55 – Labourer. Lancashire. Ruptured a blood vessel in the brain. Not comprised.

OLDHAM Thomas - 1884 - 18/02/1884 – Age 35 – Labourer. Alma, Thomas Holdsworth, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Crushed between railway trucks under the screens.

OLDHAM William - 1882 – 16/01/1882 – Age 30 – Hewer. Haswell, Haswell Shotton & Easington Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Fall of coal while in the act of kirving.

OLDNOW Henry (injured) - 1880 – 15/03/1880 – Age 17 – Waggoner. Hollingworth, John Taylor and Co., Littleborough, Lancashire. Slightly burned. Omitting to test the place with a safety lamp on returning.

OLIMAN James - 1889 – 26/03/1889 – Age 38 – Rolleywayman. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Engine set got in the way and drew out some timber, while resetting some stone fell.

OLIVE George - 1888 – 17/10/1888 – Age 44 – Horsekeeper. Outwood No.5, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Fatally crushed between his train of tubs and the side of the level he either fell off or was caught in passing a coupling prop.

OLIVE Thomas - 1880 – 22/12/1880 – Miner. Stopes, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. Slightly burned. Doe Mine. Going into the face of his upbrow with an open light after being away from it, filling coal.

OLIVE Walker (injured) - 1884 – 14/11/1884 – Fireman. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Overwinding, when about to descend the catch of the reversing level having slipped out of notch. 2 injured.

OLIVER Andrew - 1888 – 05/06/1888 – Age 71 – Wasteman. West Sleekburn, Bedlington Coal Co., West Sleekburn Northumberland. Fall from roof ridding a stenton.

OLIVER Dennis - 1884 – 22/12/1884 – Age 48 – Waggon greaser. Sovereign, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Caught by railway waggon on siding.

OLIVER Henry (injured) - 1889 – 13/02/1889 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. A stone fell from a pass at the 160 fathom level and struck Oliver injuring his eye and cutting his face but not seriously.

OLIVER Herbert - 1888 – 19/03/1888 – Age 40 – Miner. Eston, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Co. Durham. Died suddenly from natural causes while at his work in Cleveland ironstone mine. Place and ventilation all right.

OLIVER Jonas - 1888 - 07/04/1888 – Age 59 – Dataller. Saltwells, Earl of Dudley, Cradley Heath, Worcester. Continued working under an overhanging rate of coal although warned of his danger by a fellow. workman.

OLIVER Joseph (injured) - 1889 - 14/12/1889 – Age 61 – Labourer. South Wheal Frances (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. The man was employed at surface and whilst assisting to replace a waggon which had got off the rail, he had his leg broken by a blow from the wheel of the waggon as the latter came back into its place with a jerk.

OLIVER R. - 1889 - 14/08/1889 – Age 14 – Driver. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

OLIVER Samuel - 1887 - 06/01/1887 – Age 65 – Carter. Pooley Hall, Pooley Hall Colliery Co., Tamworth, Staffordshire. Leading coal from pit bank horse bolted and in trying to stop it he fell and was run over.

OLIVER William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 11/03/1889 – Age 46 – Miner. Arniston, Arniston Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Fall of coal at stoop. 88 days off.

OLIVER William - 1883 - 20/12/1883 – Age 59 – Keeker. Radcliffe, Radcliffe Coal Co., Northumberland. Crushed between truck and gangway.

OLLERENSHAW Anthony - 1887 - 01/01/1887 – Age 50 – Deputy. Whaley, Buxton Lime Co., Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire. Fall of roof had neglected to examine place after firing shot and was drilling hole for another when the stone fell on him.

OLLERTON Henry - 1887 - 19/09/1887 – Age 54 – Furnaceman. Chapel House, Executors of late Edward Smith, Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was going down in the cage alone to his work when he by some means fell out and was killed. It is supposed that he had a fit.

ONIONS Charles - 1887 - 06/07/1887 – Age 27 – Shunter. Cannock & Rugeley, Cannock & Rugeley Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Crushed to death between railway waggons when shunting.

OPENSHAW Thomas - 1886 07/05/1886 – Age 50 – Miner. Davenport Trencherbone, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Fatal fall of coal from a smooth slip, which came over the holing. Accidental. 1 killed 1 injured.

OPENSHAW Thomas - 1887 - 12/05/1887 – Age 54 – Miner. Bradley Fold No.1, Thomas Fletcher and Sons., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof and coal which came over two sprags from a slip previously unseen.

ORANGE W. - 1881 - 31/03/1881 – Age 25 – Collier. Conyers, G and J Haigh, Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

ORD William - 1880 - 19/06/1880 – Age 41 – Shifter. Shelton Park (Ironstone), Bell Bros Ltd., Guisborough, Yorkshire. Fall of stone in main return; while removing some stone another fall took place from the roof which had been previously examined.

ORGILL John - 1888 - 31/10/1888 – Age 39 – Stallman. Stanton, J and J Nadin and Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. fall of roof while building a gate end pack.

ORGREAVE Joseph - 1885 - 30/10/1885 – Age 75 – Screenman. Birley Vale, Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Crushed by a steam hoist attempting to remove a loaded tub from the cage.

ORMEROD John - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Age 41 – Moorfield. Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas 68 killed.

ORMEROD Richard - 1886 - 09/10/1886 – Quarryman. Brandwood (quarry), Henry Heyes and Co., Lancashire. A quarryman was killed whilst firing a shot. Not comprised by the Mining Act.

ORR James (non-fatal) - 1888 - 19/10/1888 - Overman. Cauldhame, Archibald Finnie and Son, Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp.

ORR Matthew - 1887 - 29/09/1887 – Age 22 – Hewer. Whitehaven, Earl of Lonsdale, Whitehaven, Cumberland. Fall of stone.

ORR Robert (non-fatal) - 1889 - 08/10/1889 – Age 21 – Miner. Broxburn, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Struck by tub. Not resumed work.

ORR William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 06/08/1889 – Roadsman. Tannochside No.1, Owners of Chapelhall, Uddingston, Lanarkshire. The cage was lowered on him while adjusting the cage needles.

ORRELL Henry - 1886 – 22/12/1886 – Age 23 – Labourer. Ince, Arley Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest at tended. A waggon was off the rails at one end and they hooked a chain on to two waggons alongside to jerk it on when the two waggons overpowered deceased and his mate and the former was caught by the chain at a crossing and thrown under the wheels.

ORRELL John - 1880 - 16/07/1880 – Age 26 – Gangrider. Havannah, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Caught against the roof as he was riding up the incline.

ORRELL Thomas - 1887 - 24/07/1887 – Age 5 – Child. Hoddlesden, Joseph Place & Sons, Lancashire. Fatally injured whilst he and other children were playing with the capstan on Sunday. Not comprised by the Act.

ORTON George jnr. (non-fatal) - 1889 - 12/08/1889 – Age 14 - Lamp trimmer. Cadzow, Cadzow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Crushed while riding on bogie. 103 days off.

OWEN David (injured) - 1889 – 07/05/1889 – Age 30 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). While firing a blast he stood in a place which he considered safe but stones were thrown against the side of the chamber rebounded against the roof and finally dropped upon his head. 5 weeks off.

OWEN David - 1882 – 09/09/1882 – Age 21 – Haulier. Ferndale No.1, D Davies and Co., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Crushed against roof when riding on a full tram.

OWEN David - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 33 – Farrier. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.

OWEN Edward - 1880 – 03/08/1880 – Age 49 – Fireman. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Explosion of gas. 9 killed.

OWEN Edward - 1882 – 21/02/1882 – Age 32 – Sinker. Park, D Davies and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Killed by a portion of the side of a sinking pit falling in. 4 killed.

OWEN Edward - 1888 – 14/03/1888 – Age 28 – Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate). He was hauling a block of slate down a heap of rubbish by a winch and chain. The block suddenly started rolling and gathering up the chain about it, reversed the winch, the handle of which flew round and struck Owen on the forehead. A pawl would have prevented this accident.

OWEN Enoch - 1887 - 21/09/1887 – Age 50 - Rock ripper. West Cannock, West Cannock Colliery Co., Hendesford, Staffordshire. Explosion of gasses from a gob fire. 3 killed. Died 4th October.

OWEN Evan (injured) - 1883 - 06/04/1883 – Age 26 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate). He was endeavouring to drive a seven eighth inch cartridge of gun cotton with a wooden stick down a three quarter inch hole when the gun cotton exploded and burnt his hand severely. Two and a half weeks off.

OWEN Evan (injured) - 1884 - 29/01/1884 – Age 23 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate). A hole charged with powder having missed fire, Owen bored a second bole and fired it. It did its work all right, but in working away the loose rock some remnants of the charge of the first hole exploded and burnt Owen’s face. 11 weeks off.

OWEN John (injured) - 1889 – 25/06/1889 – Age 57 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He was adjusting a load on the foot of an incline above ground when part of it fell and stuck him on the leg.5 months off.

OWEN John - 1882 – 03/03/1882 – Age 40 – Rockman. Cwmorthin (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He was employed in moving a loose block of slate down a talus of slate and rubbish when a piece rolled down the slope and struck him on the back. 8 weeks 2 days off.

OWEN John - 1882 – 25/07/1882 – Age 33 – Timberman. Western Ocean, D Davies and Co., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Killed by the falling of a pair timber.

OWEN John - 1887 – 11/03/1887 – Age 16 – Collier’s boy. No.2 Ferndale, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. A small stone from the roof fell upon him while filling coal which the collier was taking down. Props were within 4ft. of face. Long wall.

OWEN Joseph - 1886 – 19/04/1886 – Age 55 – Collier. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., Newton-le-Willows Lancashire. Inspection and attended inquest. Deceased was working at the fan when the whole of his place fell in capping all the props. The roof was very rotten and broke all round the props. Bars should have been used with so bad a roof.

OWEN Joseph - 1889 - 18/10/1889 – Age 61 – Miner. Linnyshaw 7 Foot, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Died today from what was considered a slight injury to the hand and arm, by a small piece of coal falling from the face where he was working on the 8th. Feb. last. He came out of the pit and walked about after the occurrence. Inquest attended. Verdict accidental.

OWEN Lewis (injured) - 1889 – 12/04/1889 – Age 38 – Rockman. Aberllefenny (slate). While tramming a load of rubbish he jumped on to the brake of his waggon instead of merely putting his foot on it and struck his head against the roof of the level receiving a scalp wound. Two and a half weeks off.

OWEN Owen (injured) - 1889 – 12/11/1889 – Age 46 – Labourer. Bryneglwys (slate). A small stone fell upon his head and fractured his skull slightly. Possibly the stone came from a little rubbish resting loosely on a ledge of rock and not from the solid roof or side. 7 weeks off.

OWEN Owen R. (injured) - 1889 – 24/10/1889 – Age 32 – Miner. Cwmorthin (slate). A hole three feet deep had been charged with gelatine dynamite and fired. It blew off most of its burden but left a socket 15 inches deep. Half-an-hour or more after the explosion Owen returned and proceeded to recharge the socket with gelatine-dynamite using a wooden rammer. While Owen was ramming with a good deal of force the explosive went off and he was slightly injured about the face and arm. Four and a half weeks off.

OWEN Reuben - 1887 – 01/09/1887 – Age 39 – Stone blower. Castle Mill (metalliferous), Trustees of the Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Was standing upon a ladder examining the roof after having fired a shot when a large piece of rock, loosened by the shot, fell upon and carried him to the ground killing him on the spot.

OWEN Richard - 1880 – 30/06/1880 – Age 16 – Labourer. Wyndham Llwynvi, Tondu and Ogmore Co., Nantymoel, Glamorgan. Crushed between empty wagon and screens.

OWEN Robert (injured) - 1882 – 10/05/1882 – Age 57 – Rockman. Oakley Upper (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He was holding a light to his partner who was prizing down a block of slate with a crowbar, when a small piece fell off unexpectedly and struck his big toe. 3 months off.

OWEN Robert (injured) - 1885 – 27/10/1885 – Age 36 – Miner. Palmerston (slate). He had fired a hole with a little powder which produced a rent, he then charged the rent with powder and lighted the fuse. Not hearing a report he returned to the hole 20 minutes afterwards when the charge exploded burning his face. 5 weeks off.

OWEN Robert (injured) - 1886 – 20/02/1886 – Age 46 – Labourer. Aberllefenny (slate). He took sprag out of the wheel of a waggon when it moved suddenly and struck him. 4 weeks off.

OWEN Robert (injured) - 1888 – 22/12/1888 – Age 58 – Rubbisher. Llechwedd (slate). While he was climbing up the working face of a chamber a piece of rock slipped away unexpectedly and broke his leg. 17 weeks off.

OWEN Robert (injured) - 1889 - 07/03/1889 – Age 26 – Miner. Oakeley (slate). The stage upon which he was standing gave way and caused him to fall 4 or 5 feet and break his leg. The stage had been fixed by him and it gave way because he had bored the holes for supporting iron pegs only 1 inch deep instead of 2 inches. 2 months off.

OWEN Thomas (injured) - 1880 - 19/01/1880 – Age 24 – Miner. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Manchester, Lancashire. 3 hurt. Tubs in which they were riding down the engine brow becoming uncoupled.

OWEN Thomas (injured) - 1886 - 06/04/1886 – Age 35 – Miner. Oakeley Upper (slate). Lewis Jones was ramming a tamping with a wooden stick upon a charge of gelatine dynamite and guncotton when they exploded. Product of the tight fitting guncotton against the side of the hole or it may have been due to a blow cap. 2 injured. Jones 4 weeks off, Thomas 5 weeks off.

OWEN Thomas - 1880 - 30/03/1880 – Age 63 – Collier. New Brithdir, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorgan. Injured by fall of roof and died on April 3rd.

OWEN Thomas - 1887 - 29/06/1887 – Age 14 – Collier. South Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of a lump of clod above the coal in face of stall. 4ft. seam. Long wall.

OWEN W. - 1883 - 13/12/1883 – Age 52 – Collier. Waine, Messrs Hankey, Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

OWEN William (injured) - 1883 - 06/06/1883 – Age 25 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). He thought the fuse of a hole charged with gunpowder had failed to take fire, and he was about to relight it when the charge exploded. Face and hand burnt. 16 weeks off.

OWEN William - 1882 - 13/10/1881 – Age 40 – Rockman. Oakley Upper (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. A stone from the face of his bargain fell upon his shoulder. About 12 weeks off.

OWEN William - 1886 - 01/09/1886 – Age 34 - Prop taker. Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Co Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof from a slip, which was known of, while prop taking.

OWENS D. - 1883 - 23/01/1883 – Age 14 – Collier. No.6 Ebbw Vale, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. Fall of clod. He was filling a tram and the clod was standing square over the coal and had just been
tried and sounded safe. A lump fell from a slip on to him and he died in about two hours from the injuries.

OWENS J. - 1881 - 05/04/1881 – Age 60 – Repairer. Lower Deep, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouth. Fall of coal and stone from the roof.

OWENS James - 1887 - 19/10/1887 – Age 70 - Night hitcher. Ebbw Vale No.22, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Crushed at the shaft bottom by the descending cage. He was found there by the horse keepers on their coming to ascend the shaft. He had about 10 minutes before signalled a contractor away which was the last time the cages had been moved. How or why he got under the cage is unknown as he had nothing to bring him there connected with his work.

OWENS Job - 1888 - 13/11/1888 – Age – Age 45 – Collier. Wynnstay, New British Iron Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was starting to build a pack and foolishly drew a prop which was in the way without first setting others for his protection when a stone full on him.

OWENS John (injured) - 1881 - 28/06/1881 – Age 45 – Miner. Cwmorthin (slate), Tanygrisau. The men were widening a roof and had followed a well-marked slant. They appear to have blasted a hole which loosened a slab of 18 inches in thickness, between their slant and the next, and this came down upon them. 1 killed 1 injured. Seventeen and a half weeks off.

OWENS John (injured) - 1883 - 28/02/1883 – Age 42 – Trammer. South Darren (metalliferous). Aberystwith, Cardigan. He was standing on stuff in a pass, and while he was trying to clear a choke with a bar, which he had lashed to his arm, the stuff gave way under his feet, and he was carried down the pass. Severely bruised. 10 weeks off.

OWENS John - 1886 - 26/03/1886 – Age 28 – Collier. Fernhill, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of clod.

OWENS John David (injured) - 1885 - 27/01/1885 – Age 20 – Miner. Cambrian (metalliferous). He was struck by stones from a blast fired by other men who did not keep a proper watch, and prevent him from going into danger. 47 days off.

OWENS Michael - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 14 – Driver. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

OWENS Owen (injured) - 1882 - 11/10/1882 – Age 30 – Miner. Mona (metalliferous), Amlwch. Six holes charged with dynamite were fired, but only five reports were heard; thinking that two of the holes must have gone off simultaneously, the men returned to their working place, when the last hole exploded. Face and eye slightly injured. 2 weeks off.

OWENS Owen - 1881 - 04/10/1881 – Age 17 - Attending ropes. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Crushed by machinery; he got over the fence and was caught by the drum of the hauling engine; he ought to have gone round by the proper road.

OWENS Richard William (injured) - 1885 - 25/05/1885 – Age 16 – Drawer. Victoria, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Injured in a gig brow by the carriage on which the tubs are conveyed. In getting out of the way he missed his footing and slipped in front of it. Timber was being sent up and he was pulling the rope to assist.

OWENS Simon - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 16 - Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion of gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed.

OWENS William (injured) - 1885 - 27/08/1885 – Age 17 – Drawer. Victoria, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Leg broken by a piece of top coal, 7 feet mine, which fell between sprags as he was filling his tub. The place was well propped and spragged.

OXLEY W. - 1889 - 12/12/1889 – Age 14 – Screenboy. Charlton Main, Yorkshire and Derbyshire Coal & Iron Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Caught by shaft of screen shaker.
