M’KENNA Peter - 1883 - 12/04/1883 – Age 50 – Labourer. Hindley Hall, Pearson and Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was knocked down by some waggons on the surface railway. The accident was due to want of proper precautions on the part of the low driver and his assistants. The driver did not open his whistle as he backed the waggons into the siding, and his assistants did not see that the road was clear. The approach of the wagons was unnoticed by the deceased.

MADDEN George (injured) - 1880 – 13/04/1880 – Age 15 – Waggoner. Anderton Hall, B and R Fisher and Co., Blackrod, Lancashire. Leg broken by his tub, which he did not put far enough out of the road for a train drawn by a pony to pass.

MADDERN Robert - 1888 – 14/06/1888 – Age 17 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. While tamping a hole containing a mixed charge of dynamite and powder a premature explosion took place Maddern being killed on the spot and Tregear being very badly injured losing one hand. I had previously spoken of the danger of using mixed charges and the men had been warned about it. An iron tamping bar was used but not until after a second layer of tamping had been gently rammed with a wooden bar. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and added a rider to the effect that a regulation should be enforced and the same read to every man in the Botallock Mine that mixed charges should not in future be used. 1 killed 1 injured.

MADDOCKS John - 1880 - 13/05/1880 – Age 62 – Collier. Jersey, Jersey Coal and Brock Co., Briton Ferry, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

MADDON George - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 21 – Wagoner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

MADDEN Patrick - 1886 - 11/11/886 – Age 19 – Labourer. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased jumped into a hopper full of slack, to make it run quicker out of the shoot, when the slack slipped away with him and he was buried and smothered. The man had no business to go into the hopper but should have used a bar.

MADDOX Jacob (injured) - 1884 - 09/07/1884 – Age 57 - Asst. sawyer. Wotherton (metalliferous). Through inadvertence he had the tips of two fingers cut off by a circular saw while assisting the man in charge. 9 weeks off.

MADDOX John - 1883 - 17/09/1883 – Age 42 – Stallman. West Cannock, West Cannock Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Fall of coal. Injured 1st Sept.

MADDRELL William - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 40. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery. Left a wife.

MADDRON Oliver - 1886 - 02/11/1886 – Fireman. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co Ltd., West Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was the person appointed to fire the shots in a stone drift. After lighting a shot he retired to a
distance of 27 yards in a line with the hole when a piece of stone from the shot struck him. There was a refuge place made purposely for the men to retire in, but he failed to use it.

MAGEE James - 1888 - 31/01/1888 – Age 34 – Hewer. Silksworth, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. In bringing a full tub down an incline it overpowered him and he was thrown down and run over.

Deceased had brought out a tub and for some reason had slopped between two cloths to pull out a scotch it was supposed. The man following not knowing he was there ran into him. The deceased had no business to stop between the cloths nor did he call out to the man following him.

He had neglected to put in all the snibbles (bar of wood or iron used as a brake or drag on a waggon or hutch in mining.)

MAINWARING Hopkin - 1889 – 13/01/1889 – Age 34 – Repairer. Havod Lewis’, Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (30ft. x 9ft. x 6ins. thick) in a road in which 2ft. had been ripped to raise the road. There was one side prop within the length and another was about to be set near the other end which was an open one. Strong cliff ground with a smooth bed 6ins. up from which the stone fell. 4-ft. seam. Long wall.

MAINWARING John - 1881 – 08/12/1881 – Age 65 – Signalman. Worcester, Worcester Coal Co., Swansea, Glamorgan. Struck by journey of trams through giving wrong signal.

MAIR Alexander (non-fatal) - 1886 – 08/12/1886 – Drawer. Daldowie, Dunn Bros., Mount Vernon. Explosion of firedamp.

Directly afterwards however, a further fall took place, by which he was killed.

Overbalanced himself and fell 300 yards down shaft whilst engaged with another man in changing a bucket. He had been accustomed to the work for 20 years and on account of his age other work was offered him but he declined it.

MALTBY Aaron - 1882 - 11/09/1882 – Age 22 – Miner. Silence Mine (metalliferous), Mill Dam Mining Co., Great Hucklow, Eyam, Derbyshire. Went into another workman’s place of work, and whilst standing under a stone, being drilled for a Shot, it fell upon him.

MALTON William - 1884 - 09/05/1884 – Age 44 – Hewer. Bromhill, Sowerby and Andrews, Bromhill, Northumberland. Fall of coal.

MANHENNETT Richard (injured) - 1888 - 17/04/1888 – Miner. Tolgullow United (metalliferous), Scorrier, Cornwall. One of the shot passes, having got choked, in order to clear it Manhennett ignited a cartridge which taking longer than he thought it should do to explode, he concluded had missed fired and returned to the place. An explosion took place, injuring him in the face and eyes, but not seriously.

MANLEY Thomas - 1880 - 11/06/1880 – Age 17 – Jigger. Moss Pearson, Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Pemberton, Lancashire. Deceased was riding on a loaded tub, contrary to rules, and was thrown off and crushed owing to the tub getting off the road.

MANLEY William (injured) - 1889 - 09/10/1889 – Age 20 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Liskeard, Cornwall. The men were sinking a new shaft and had just commenced boring a hole when an explosion took place injuring them severely about the head and face. Both were temporarily deprived of their sight. As there was no dynamite in the shaft and no hole had missed previously the accident was unaccountable to the agents but in my opinion was due to the exudation of nitro-glycerine from a hole previously exploded. 2 injured.

MANN John - 1886 - 16/10/1886 – Age 43 – Miner. Mosley Common No.1 Seven Feet, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof coal as he was drawing a prop. Accidental.

MANN Joseph (injured) - 1884 - 09/12/1884 – Age 22 – Miner. Wellington, William Ransden, Lancashire. Fall of side in taking down side.

MANN Michael (injured) - 1886 - 08/02/1886 – Sinker. Lower Hall, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured in the No.2 sinking pit by the falling of a piece of fireclay from the side a few yards up and just below the bed of coal but the bricking was nearly up to it. The sufferer was in charge at the time and said that he thought he had pulled off all that was loose.

MANNION Luke (injured) - 1889 - 12/12/1889 – Age 36 – Sinker. Westleigh Sinking, Westleigh Colliery Co., Lancashire. Injured by stone falling from the side of sinking pit. Inspection and inquiry.

MANTELL William - 1881 - 06/12/1881 – Age 43 – Pikeman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. A sudden rush of roof and shutt (gob) took place and buried the deceased which suffocated him before he could be reached.

MANTLE John - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 45 – Repairer. No.4 Ferndale, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. A large fall of roof on a double parting, which was being repaired, caused apparently by a sudden crush which discharged six or seven pairs of double timber. About 150 tons fell. Died 24th February. 2 killed.

MARCH Miles - 1888 - 23/01/1888 – Age 20 – Hewer. Stanley Drift, Pease and Partners Ltd., Crook, Co. Durham. Fall of stone and coal when turning a place away he met with a breaker in roof.

MARION Stephen - 1888 - 13/10/1888 – Age 14 – Screener. Edmonsley, Edmonsley Coal Co., Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. This boy, long after his day's work was over, was trespassing in the coke yard when he was knocked down and run over by the trucks.

MARKEY Patrick - 1887 - 13/05/1887 – Age 20 – Shifter. Haswell, Haswell Shotton & Easington Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Received a blow in the abdomen with a crown tree while following his work inflammation set in and he died on the 15th.

MARSH Joseph - 1887 - 23/02/1887 – Age 72 – Dataler. Ravenhead, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He and another man were sent to put up some bars at a point marked by the fireman and deceased commenced to pull some side off, against his mate's wish, when the roof fell suddenly on him.

MARSH Matthias - 1881 - 13/06/1881 – Age 40 – Collier. Bickerstaffe, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquiries made and inquest attended. A drawer brought his tub out and left it at the top of an incline without properly securing it. Another man ran his tub against it and started it off down the incline and it struck the deceased, who was travelling to the shaft. Died l3th. Sept. Proceedings were taken against the drawer for a breach of the Special rules but the case was dismissed.

MARSH Peter - 1880 - 08/04/1880 – Age 13 – Waggoner. Brinsop Hall, Brinsop Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Westhoughton Lancashire. Caught by his tub in No.5 Pit Yard Coal. He was lifting it on the rails, where it got off at angle caused by the rails slipping on a slope.
