Fall of roof from between two slips 3ft. apart and parallel with face and some top coal which was undermined 2ft. There were no posts beneath the portion of roof which fell and no sprags or props supporting overhanging coal. Four Feet seam. longwall.
MARTIN Robert - 1882 – 16/10/1882 – Age 51 – Bottomer. West Longrigg, James Gemmell, New Monkland, Lanarkshire. He pushed a loaded hutch and fell after it into the shaft while the cage was at the surface. There was a gate, but he had neglected it.

MARTLEW Peter - 1882 - 27/11/1882 – Age 14 – Drawer. Mains Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was passing down a steep incline on his way to the pit bottom which is worked by an endless rope, when one of the chains broke, and the tub struck the boy. Refuge places were provided. It has been decided to stop the rope when men are passing up or down until the separate travelling road has been completed.
MARTON Michael - 1883 - 12/07/1883 – Age 38 – Dataler. New Boston, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was filling a water tank for the stables and instead of taking it round by the empty road he, with his mate, pushed it through the cage without giving any signal to the engineman to keep the cage still and just at the moment the cage was raised, throwing the tank out and it fell on him.

MASON Abraham - 1882 - 07/03/1882 – Age 28 – Hitcher. Cinder, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouth. When pushing an empty train through the cage a lump of coal fell down the shaft and struck him on the head.

MASON Ellis - 1882 - 26/05/1882 – Age 18 – Drawer. White Moss, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The two deceased were drawing timber, when the roof came in bodily knocking out about 20 props. They were apparently doing their work in a proper manner. 2 killed.

MATHER James (injured) - 1885 - 07/12/1885 – Age 26 – Miner. Peel Hall, James Roscoe, Lancashire. Injured by fall of roof from a pot hole while setting a prop under it. The place was well secured the props being about a yard asunder.
MATHER John - 1883 - 24/08/1883 – Age 23 – Drawer. Winstanley, Trustees of late Meyrick Banks, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The colliers for whom deceased worked neglected to put in a sufficient number of bars and the roof fell on him. There was a good supply of timber in the place and the colliers had been very careless and neglectful.

MATHER Ralph (injured) - 1885 - 23/10/1885 – Age 18 – Drawer. Hewlett, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Head injured through another drawer running a tub against him when passing swing cloths. Effective measures will be taken that they pass suck cloths in future at walking place.
MATHER Thomas - 1884 - 07/05/1884 – Age 18 – Drawer. Queen, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, who worked with his father, was allowed by him to work under some top coals, which should either have been pulled down or propped when the coal fell upon him. The place had not been visited by the fireman as often as should have been done.

MATHIE James - 1882 - 29/06/1882 – Age 27 – Collier. Cornsilloch, Cornsilloch Coal Co., Dalserf, Lanarkshire. He went into another man’s place for tools. The fireman had stopped the man who worked in it until he had cleared out the gas.
MATHIESON James - 1880 - 19/12/1880 – Reddsman. Muiredge No.1, Bowman and Co., Leven, Fife. Breakage of wire rope. It was supposed that the rope went off the pulley and the fall of the cage about 13 feet, snapped the rope where it struck the axel. It was a very stormy morning with snow falling heavily at the time. 2 killed.
MATHIESON John - 1885 - 11/05/1885 – Age 54 – Collier. Hopetoun, James Wood, Bathgate, Linlithgow. Crushed by a runaway train on engine plane while taking empty hutch from one station to another.
MATHIESON Robert (non-fatal) - 1884 - 12/01/1884 – Collier. Kilgramie, Couper and McHarrie, Dalry, Ayrshire. Fall of coal.
MATHIESON Thomas - 1888 - 18/07/1888 – Age 25 – Miner. Lightshaw No.3, Eglinton Iron Co., Muirkirk, Ayrshire. While descending the shaft he was crushed between the cage and a bunton.
MATLEY Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 20/07/1888 – Age 20 – Drawer. Limehurst Two Foot Mine, Limehurst Coal Co., Lancashire. Injured about the legs by a tub running against him a collier, who, in the absence of his drawer was acting as a drawer having let the tub escape from him on a slope. Both had lost their lights. The collier was fined 5s. to the Colliers' Accident Fund for letting the tub go.

MATTHEWS James - 1887 - 26/01/1887 – Age 15 – Driver. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Severely crushed by a tub ending up on him.
MATTHEWS John - 1880 - 14/07/1880 – Age 48 – Labourer. South Devon United (metalliferous), South Devon United Mining Co., Buchfastleigh, Devon. Was sent to put a belt on to a pulley underneath the flooring of the dressing floors; in proceeding to the place took a short cut over some gearing, also underneath the floors, although he had been cautioned not to do so, his leg was caught between two small bevel wheels, and he died from the effects of the injuries received.

The horse was passing the deceased when some part of the gearing caught in a hook attached to a lifting belt which he had round his waist and he was, thrown against the horse, which became frightened and bolted, dragging the boy after him.

Deceased and some other boys released it when owing to the rope being taut the tub sprung across the road and caught him against a prop.

Mc AVOY James - 1881 – 09/04/1881 – Age 36 – Miner. Addiewell No.2 (shale), Youngs Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., West Calder, Edinburgh. Struck by empty hutch at top of an incline plane. The hutches were lowered and raised by gravity, and he allowed the empty to go past the landing at the face. It contained two props, and one of these or the hutch jammed him.
Mc AVOY James - 1888 – 30/11/1888 – Age 21 – Trailer. No.9 (metalliferous), Cleator Iron Ore Co., Cleator, Cumberland. Suffocation by carbonic acid gas. The wood in a drift in No.6 pit having taken fire on the night of the 29th November, the fumes from the fire passed to No.9 pit which was an upcast shaft for No.6 pit. No notice having been sent to No.9 pit of the danger caused by the fire in No.6 pit the No.9 pit workmen descended the pit on the morning of the 3Oth November. John Mills while proceeding to his working place became unconscious and while attempting to rescue him, McAvoy and Phillips lost their lives. 3 killed.
