MORT Robert - 1886 - 07/07/1886 – Age 60 – Miner. Dixon Green, Plodder Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof stone from between two unseen slips.

MORT Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 11/11/1885 – Age 62 – Miner. Dixon Green, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Thighs and ribs crushed by fall of stone from roof, of the Plodder Mine, while removing and repairing a previous fall. No lack of timbering.

MORT W. (injured) - 1883 - 20/09/1883 – Age 40 – Miner. Outwood, Fletcher Thomas and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of coal.

MORTIMER J. - 1881 - 03/08/1881 – Age 23 – Collier. Farm Level, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouth. When bringing a tram down a slight incline his foot slipped and the tram crushed his back. He died 29th Nov.

MORTON Benjamin - 1886 - 19/07/1886 – Age 21 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Trencherbone, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. By roof falling as he was pulling coal from the working face. Accidental.

MORTON Edward - 1881 - 07/02/1881 – Manager. Whitfield, Chatterley Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 25 killed.

MORTON Nicholas - 1880 - 12/02/1880 – Age 16 - Asst. onsetter. South Moor, Hedley and Bell, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Fell from Shield Row to Hutton Seam, a distance of 112 yards. He neglected to close the fence, and a tub pulled him into the shaft.

MORTON Thomas - 1884 - 15/08/1884 – Age 50 – Miner. Palmerston (slate). He was clearing rubbish from the great fall when a stone rolled down and struck him on the back.

MORTON William - 1881 - 07/02/1881 – Manager. Whitfield, Chatterley Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 25 killed.

MOSELEY Joseph - 1882 - 30/07/1882 – Age 70 – Pumper. Mounts (ironstone), Patent Shaft and Axeltree Co., Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Injured on June 80th, died this day from the effects of an explosion of gas in the main road.

MOSELY John - 1889 - 05/05/1889 – Age 52 – Mechanic. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. Knocked off pithead frame, 50ft. high by the slipping of a derrick while taking down a pulley.

MOSLEY Samuel - 1886 - 25/11/1886 – Age 27 – Loader. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

MOSLEY Thomas (injured) - 1884 - 20/08/1884 – Age 40 – Dayman. Lower Hall, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken fall of roof.

MOSLEY Walter - 1885 - 27/11/1885 – Age 15 – Driver. Birley, West Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Run over by full tubs.

MOSS B. - 1881 - 26/10/1881 – Age 55 – Labourer. Griffin, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouth. He was run over by a tram of rubbish before it could be topped. He was deaf and did not hear the other man shouting to him.

MOSS F. - 1882 - 01/05/1882 – Age 57 – Deputy. Victoria Bruntcliffe, J Haigh and Sons, Leeds, Yorkshire. Explosion of gas. 7 killed.

MOSS Frederick - 1881 - 08/03/1881 – Age 18 – Labourer. Robin Hill, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Was assisting the pitman to get a pump bucket out when the engineman raised the hoppet unexpectedly, and he was thrown down the pit. The pitman and banksman had, without permission and the knowledge of the engineman, altered the signals, hence, when a signal to lower was given, the hoppet was raised.

MOSS H. (rescued) - 1886 - 02/12/1886 – Horsekeeper. Elemore, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Explosion 28 killed.

MOSS J. - 1881 - 12/12/1881 – Age 58 – Collier. Dukinfield, Dukinfield Coal Co., Dukinfield, Cheshire. Fall of coal.

MOSS John - 1887 - 27/07/1887 – Age 57 - Rope inspector. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was tightening a signal wire, on an endless rope road, and was caught and crushed by one of the tubs which was travelling at the rate of a mile an hour.

MOSS W. - 1883 - 30/05/1883 – Age 27 – Hooker. Bullhurst, Bullhurst Colliery Co., Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fell down shaft with loaded tub.

MOSSEY Robert (non-fatal) - 1886 - 24/12/1886 – Collier. Newton No.1, James Dunlop and Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp 4 injured.

MOSSOP Clemment - 1881 - 08/03/1881 – Age 24 – Miner. Lindal Moor (metalliferous), Harrison Ainslie and Co., Lancashire. Fell from ladder in shaft.

MOTT G. - 1883 - 19/04/1883 – Age 40 – Collier. Hemsworth, Hemsworth Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

MOTTERAM Henry - 1889 - 12/03/1889 – Loader. Whitfield, Chatterley Iron Co. Ltd., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Injured by fall of roof. Died 13th March. The collier for who he was working neglected to secure the roof he was prosecuted for breach of rules and fined £1. 17s. 6d. including costs.

MOTTISHAW George - 1881 - 27/03/1881 – Age 50 – Dataler. Foxley Oaks, Whittington Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Getting in the cage at the pit top when it descended and crushed him.

MOTTISHEAD J. - 1884 - 21/07/1884 – Age 36 – Collier. Poynton & Worth, Lord Vernon, Stockport, Cheshire. Fall of roof.

MOULD Robert - 1883 - 10/03/1883 – Age 11 – Greaser. Ushaw Moor, Henry Chaytor, Durham, Co. Durham. Killed by a fall of stone in the rolley way.

MOULD S. - 1887 - 18/03/1887 – Age 25 – Collier. Park Hill, Victoria Coal and Coke Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

MOUNTAIN John - 1884 - 19/07/1884 – Age 32 – Deputy. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Fall of a large stone while engaged in drawing timber.

MOUNTFORD Elijah - 1883 - 03/02/1883 – Age 27 – Airwayman. Hayes, Earl of Shrewsbury, Rugeley, Staffordshire. Rate of coal from side of airway which he was repairing.

MOXHAM or MOXALL Samuel - 1886 - 10/09/1886 – Age 48 – Hewer. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co., Somerset. Explosion of firedamp. Left wife and 7 children. 10 killed.

MOYLE John William Reed (injured) - 1889 - 03/10/1889 – Age 22 – Miner. West Basset (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. A large piece of ground came away on Moyle from the back of 104 fathom level, breaking his leg below the thigh.

MUCKLEWEE James (non-fatal) - 1889 - 22/02/1889 – Age 21 – Labourer. Oakbank, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Crushed by waggon.

MUDGE William - 1884 - 24/05/1884 – Age 51 – Deputy. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Severely crushed by being knocked down and run over by tubs. Died 8th June.

MUDGE William - 1888 - 12/07/1888 – Age 33 – Hewer. Rosegill No.2, Lonsdale Iron and Steel Co., Rosegill, Cumberland. Fall of roof in a place newly timbered. Soft, short roof fell between planks and suffocated deceased.

MULDOON James - 1885 - 04/08/1885 – Age 42 – Collier. Black Moss, Black Moss Colliery Co., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made. A heavy fall of rock, drawing two props with it. The place was well timbered apparently, but they had gone on working, and it was difficult to judge of its previous state.

MULHOLLAND Henry (non-fatal) - 1888 - 19/07/1888 – Drawer. Gartshore No.3, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Stirling. While snibbling a race of hutches he was crushed between the hutch and a prop.

MULLIN John - 1887 - 14/10/1887 – Age 44 – Hewer. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. He alleged having received an injury to his hip by tubs, on a post mortem being made, it was found, he died from disease of kidneys there was no trace of an accident. Not comprised.

MUNCASTER or MINCASTER Thomas - 1882 - 07/09/1882 – Age 67 – Shifter. Haswell, Haswell Shotton & Easington Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Fall of stone. While lowering way he had undermined a prop, which gave way and brought down a frame of stone.

MURDEN Henry - 1884 - 12/06/1884 – Age 24 – Collier. Far Moss, Bromilow Foster and Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst holing his coal the deceased was told by another collier to set a sprag, but he neglected to do so, and the coal came away from a slip on to him. It was found that the working places were not visited by the officials more than once during a shift, and their attention was drawn by letter to the want of a better supervision.

MURREY William - 1886 - 22/07/1886 – Age 45 – Labourer. Vochriw, Dowlais Iron Co., Vochriw, Glamorgan. While pushing a railway waggon, which he was loading with dirt, he was crushed between the buffers of some other wagons which were being shunted to the screens.

MURRISH Richard (injured) - 1888 - 12/06/1888 – Age 18 – Miner. Levant (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Engaged in sinking the main engine shaft about 15 fathoms below the 180 fathom level. A small stone came away from that level and hit him on the head. His sump hat saved his head from being cut but the blow caused slight concussion of the brain.

MURRY William - 1882 - 21/11/1882 – Age 28 – Drawer. Queen, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inquiries made. Deceased was building a pack, and drew out a prop, which the underlooker had warned him not to touch, when the roof immediately fell on him breaking his leg. He died on the 14th December.

MUSCROFT J. - 1889 - 15/11/1889 – Age 29 – Collier. Allerton, T and RW Bower, Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

MUSGRAVE Ralph - 1881 - 25/10/1881 – Age 16 – Runrider. North Beechburn, North Beechburn Coal Co., Crook, Co. Durham. Severely injured by tubs through coupling breaking. Died 27th.

MUSGROVE Joseph - 1889 - 11/03/1889 – Age 38 – Hewer. Kimblesworth, Elliot and Hunter, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Broken leg and injury to spine by fall of stone in a broken jud. Died on the 26th. July.

MUSGROVE William - 1880 - 02/01/1880 – Age 36 – Hewer. Shire Moor, Shire Moor Coal Co., Shire Moor, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof.

MUSGROVE William - 1886 - 22/01/1886 – Age 42 - Deputy overman. Throckley, Throckley Coal Co., Throckley, Northumberland. Fall of stone.

MUSSON William - 1888 - 25/11/1888 – Age 49 – Stallman. Albert Derbyshire, Silkstone Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of top coal while holing.

MUTER Thomas - 1884 - 16/06/1884 – Age 47 – Deputy. Hetton, Hetton Coal Co., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Fall of a large quantity of stone in a broken jud which came off at an unseen slip over the coal head and quite unseen. 2 killed.

MYCOCK Arran - 1881 - 20/08/1881 – Age 23 – Collier. Leycett, Madeley Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

MYERS Daniel (non-fatal) - 1884 - 11/09/1884 – Pitheadman. Twechar No.2, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Ayrshire. Injured by cage.

MYERS Lewis - 1880 - 12/03/1880 – Age 22 – Trammer. Low Stubbin, Earl Fitzwilliam, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

MYERS Thomas - 1888 - 11/10/1888 – Age 16 – Drawer. Rose Bridge, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The collier was holing when a piece of overhanging coal fell bringing some clod with it which struck the deceased. The collier had just asked for a sprag, which was passed to him, but he had not set as he should have done.

MYLE John - 1883 - 28/03/1883 – Age 52 – Miner. Longacres (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Saltburn, Yorkshire. Severely crushed by a fall of stone while barring it down. Died 31st.

MYLES John - 1883 - 16/11/1883 - Age 20 – Brusher. Limerigg, Limerigg Coal Co. Ltd., Slamannan, Stirling. Fall of roof at face, while putting in building. Long wall.

MYRES John - 1889 - 07/11/1889 - Age 17 – Cager. Hodbarrow No.6 (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co., Millom, Lancashire. He and another boy were standing on top of the ladderway pelting the men going down with clay and on jumping up hurriedly, to run away, he struck his head against the roof, which was 5 ft high. He died from his injuries 8th.
