About 30 tons weight of stuff fell away. The place from which it fell had previously been sounded and was considered safe. 2 killed.

MILLS Edward (injured) - 1885 - 12/05/1885 – Age 44 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). Premature explosion of a hole charged with guncotton and gunpowder while he was in the act of tamping it, probably with an iron bar. 17 days off.
MILLS George - 1886 - 15/02/1886 – Age 22 – Collier. Rangeworthy, Rangeworthy Colliery Co., Gloucester. Injured by a fall of stone and died on the 19th. He was assisting to renew some timber. The top appeared strong and gave no warning of danger before it fell.
MILLS George - 1889 - 24/04/1889 – Age 61 - Bank inspector. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Willington, Co. Durham. Killed by an explosion of coal dust while engaged cleaning out a coal bunker. They had large oil torch lamps with them and as soon as they commenced to disturb the large accumulation of fine dust an explosion took place. They died on the 27th. 3 killed.

Drowned by an inundation of water which burst the mine from an old working at the rise side of a level, the old working having been worked from the colliery by a former owner, but not shown on the plan nor was it known to the present owners. 3 killed.

MILLS John - 1886 - 16/04/1886 – Collier. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Lancashire. Injured on the 1st January 1885 to which injuries he succumbed on 16th April 1886.
MILLS John - 1888 - 30/11/1888 – Age 43 – Miner. No.9 (metalliferous), Cleator Iron Ore Co., Cleator, Cumberland. Suffocation by carbonic acid gas. The wood in a drift in No.6 pit having taken fire on the night of the 29th November, the fumes from the fire passed to No.9 pit which was an upcast shaft for No.6 pit. No notice having been sent to No.9 pit of the danger caused by the fire in No.6 pit the No.9 pit workmen descended the pit on the morning of the 3Oth November. John Mills, while proceeding to his working place, became unconscious and while attempting to rescue him, McAvoy and Phillips lost their lives. 3 killed.
MILLS Joseph (injured) - 1880 - 26/08/1880 – Owner. Blue Ball, Joseph Mills and Bros., Bacup, Lancashire. Hurt. A shot went off as they were about to stem it. It was in silicious rock, called Ganister, but whether a spark flew from the candle, or he was struck could not be ascertained. Copper tools were provided. Horfall died. 1 killed 1 injured.
MILLS Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 18/12/1888 – Undermanager. Jubilee, Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Mills, ear singed, Buckley burned slightly, Jagger and Whatmough burned seriously by explosion of firedamp. Candles were ordinarily used in the mine but the fireman and the two miners who were using a safety lamp whilst making an opening into an Old Working, liberated some firedamp, and it lighted at the under-manager’s candle 42 yards off as he was walking along the road, the flame following the train to the opening. 4 injured.

MILLWARD Edward (injured) - 1886 - 22/04/1886 – Age 41 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). He was prising down a block of slate but it fell in a way he did not expect and broke his leg so badly that it had to be amputated. Still in hospital March 1887.

MILLWOOD John - 1887 - 15/09/1887 – Age 22 – Loader. Sandwell Park, Sandwell Park Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. A large piece of coal fell from the roof upon the slope of some previously fallen coal rolled down and crushed deceased against a tub nearly cutting him in two.

MILROY Thomas - 1882 - 08/09/1882 – Age 40 – Sinker. Drumsmidden, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. Precipitated from a scaffold by the kettle being lowered on them. 2 killed.
MILSDOM Joseph - 1885 - 20/11/1885 – Age 21 - Carting boy. Ludlow’s, Trustees of the Countess of Waldegrave, Somerset. The bottom deck of the cage was being lowered to bring the top on the flat sheets, and was just being lowered down when the deceased jumped in and was caught by the rim of the cage. He died on the 26th.

MINCASTER or MUNCASTER Thomas - 1882 - 07/09/1882 – Age 67 – Shifter. Haswell, Haswell Shotton & Easington Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Fall of stone. While lowering way he had undermined a prop, which gave way and brought down a frame of stone.
MINCHER T. - 1882 - 14/02/1882 – Age 15 – Driver. Allerton, T and R Bower, Leeds, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.
MINERS David (injured) - 1888 - 31/08/1888 – Tributer. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. While working in his pitch at the 314 fathom level east, he was injured in his head by a slight fall of ground.
MINGINS George - 1886 - 22/10/1886 – Age 20 – Labourer. No.5 (metalliferous), Messrs Kennedy Bros., Askham, Lancashire. Crushed with balance box on end of L bob of pumping gear while lowering with screw jacks; died from injuries on 23rd.
MINHAN James - 1889 - 17/01/1889 – Age 13 - Door boy. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fell off shafts and was run over by a tram rubbish on a heading dipping 6ins. per yard. He had been put to drive in the absence of some of the hauliers.
MINNS Michael - 1885 - 15/08/1885 – Age 14 – Trapper. Elemore, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Fencehouses, Co. Durham. Run over by the engine set at junction of roads.
MINORS Edward - 1883 - 01/05/1883 – Age 45 – Shaftsman. East Wheal, Rose (metalliferous), East Wheal Rose Mining Co., Newlyn, East Cornwall. A pump rod from a supplementary engine shaft had been taken up with the capstan from the 40 fathom level to adit level, and was there lashed to the side of the shaft. The capstan rope was then lowered a little to enable him to unfasten it from the rod when the latter slipped through its lashings thus tightening the capstan rope, the surge of which threw him in the shaft. He fell 20 fathoms and was instantly killed.

MINTHICK J. - 1888 – 13/10/1888 – Age 25 – Collier. Don Pedro, H Briggs and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.
MISKELL Michael - 1886 - 09/12/1886 – Age 17 – Stower. George Powell, Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Collision of railway trucks on self-acting incline between the George and Lower Duffryn collieries in consequence of a stone having been wilfully placed in the self-acting points below the meetings, thus preventing their working. Eleven men were at the time riding up to their work. Riding on this incline was prohibited, and in some instances parties had been prosecuted and others fined for so doing. 5 killed.

MITCHELL Alexander (non-fatal) - 1888 - 31/03/1888 – Labourer. Springside, A Kenneth and Sons, Dreghorn. While oiling machinery in motion his fingers were caught in pinion wheels.
MITCHELL Frederick (injured) - 1889 - 12/03/1889 – Age 20 – Miner. Gawton (metalliferous), Tavistock, Cornwall. Mitchell had charged a hole with dynamite but it did not go off as soon as he expected and after waiting for about 15 minutes he proceeded to the workings. When a short distance from the hole it exploded and a stone struck Mitchell on the lip. I wrote to the manager of the mine requesting that the man be prosecuted for contravention of the special rule prohibiting return to a hole that has misfired until a reasonable time has elapsed.
MITCHELL George (injured) - 1889 - 15/07/1889 – Age 19 - Skip filler. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Mitchell was clearing the skip pit at one of the levels but failed to put in the gate and therefore when the skip was lowered it came down upon him and crushed his back. I investigated the case and found that the accident was due to general neglect all round in respect to putting in the gate but directly the lander was to blame inasmuch as he took upon himself to instruct the whim driver to lower the skip without receiving the proper signal to do so and I called upon the agents to punish the man for this undue assumption of authority which was done.

MOODIE William - 1881 - 05/01/1881 – Age 56 – Manager. Devon Furnace Bank, Alloa Coal Co., Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire. Washed off a bunton into 50 fathoms of water. The pump had ceased to discharge water, and the sinkers were going to look at the bucket at the clack door, which had been taken off. When the bucket was lowered to the door water rushed out on him unexpectedly.
