EADES William - 1882 - 30/05/1882 – Age 22 - Hooker-on. Great Wood, Denton Colliery Co. Ltd., Denton, Lancashire. Roof stone which slid 150 yards down the engine brow.

EADIE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1885 - 12/09/1885 - Pony driver. Gateside, Flemington Coal Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Fell on hutch on which he was sitting and was run over.

EARDLEY Charles - 1887 - 27/04/1887 – Age 36 – Labourer. Ashton Moss, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Lancashire. In getting cinders from the heap he undermined too far causing the face to fall upon him. He was too venturesome. Died 20th. May.

EARDLEY J. - 1888 - 02/11/1888 – Age 36 – Collier. Newcastle, Madeley Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of coal.

EARDLEY T. - 1887 - 29/04/1887 – Age 23 – Loader. Talke, North Staffordshire Co., Stoke, Staffordshire. Lump of coal fell off a sprag on to him.

EARDLEY William Henry (injured) - 1885 - 12/06/1885 – Age 33 – Underlooker. Bar Gap, Hiram Robinson, Lancashire. Injured by falling down a staple air pit 9 or 10 yards deep. He intended sliding down the windlass rope in order to travel the airway but apparently he did not make the windlass fast before putting his weight on the rope, which caused the rope to unwind.

EARL Andrew (non-fatal) - 1886 - 12/04/1886 – Engineman. Dykes No.1, Eglinton Iron Co., Cumnock, Lanarkshire. Arm cut by broken window.

EARLEY John - 1886 - 13/01/1886 – Age 23 - Bottom shooter. Montagu Main, William Benson and Son, Northumberland. Explosion of gunpowder.

EARLIE John - 1885 – 22/01/1885 – Age 53 – Brusher. Lumphinnans, Cowdenbeath Coal Co., Lochgelly, Fife. Fall of roof while repairing drawing road, long wall.

EARLY Andrew (non-fatal) - 1885 – 20/01/1885 – Miner. Gartshore No.9, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Stirling. Fall of ironstone.

EARNSHAW J. - 1884 – 10/10/1884 – Age 32 – Collier. Emley Moor, Jaggar and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

EASINGWOOD J. - 1881 - 26/02/1881 – Age 50 – Banksman. West Riding, Pope and Pearson, Normanton, Yorkshire. Fell from gangway. Died 28th.

EASTERBROOK Archibald (non-fatal) - 1884 - 11/09/1884 – Miner. Busiehead No.4, James Dunlop and Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Explosion of gunpowder.

EASTHAM Jane - 1884 - 21/02/1884 – Age 20 – Screener. Hindley Green, J Scowcroft and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The deceased and some other girls were passing between the buffers of some waggons which were standing a few feet apart when some other waggons where were being lowered ran standing waggons knocked them over the scotches. The manager promised to make such arrangements that it would not be necessary for the girls to cross the line in future. Female.

EASTON Robert - 1882 - 30/05/1882 – Age 24 - Horse leader. Challoner (ironstone), Blocklow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Guisborough Yorkshire. Crushed between a horse and wall side while coming down a board the horse refused to hold the tub down the bank and turned out of the way.

EASTON William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 21/10/1889 – Age 39 – Brusher. Addiewell, Youngs Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Explosion of firedamp 2 injured Not resumed work.

EATON Peter - 1880 - 22/04/1880 – Age 64 – Boatman. Canal Wharf, Tyldesley Coal Co., Astley, Lancashire. Arm crushed between two waggons on the branch railway. Not comprised.

EATON Thomas - 1887 - 02/06/1887 – Age 47 – Collier. Castle, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of coal and clod at lace of stall. The seam was only three and a half feet thick and the clod 11 inches there was a sprag set up but the coal and clod burst out from a slip.

EATON William - 1881 - 03/05/1881 – Collier. Lillydale, Enoch Perrins, Bucknall, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp and interruption of water. 8 killed.

EAVES Samuel - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 27 – Daywageman. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

ECCLES Abraham (injured) - 1885 - 28/01/1885 – Age 45 – Miner. Lower Darwin, Lower Darwin Colliery Co., Lancashire. Injured slightly by fall of loose roof stone which uncapped two props.

ECCLES Richard Henry (injured) - 1885 - 31/10/1885 – Age 38 – Miner. Little Harwood, EM Sharp and Co., Lancashire. Injured by a stone from the roof at a fault and where he and others were engaged repairing. The stone knocked a bar out which was partly under it.

ECCLES Robert * - 1880 - 24/03/1880 – Age 81. Lindal Moor, Harrison Ainslie and Co., Lancashire.

ECCLESTON Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 16/01/1888 – Age 16 - Taker off. Shakerley Wellington, William Ramsden, Lancashire. Thigh broken in the engine brow the tubs having left the rails as he was riding up.

ECCLESTON William (injured) - 1886 - 06/10/1886 – Age 18 – Miner. Shakerley Wellington, William Ramsden, Lancashire. Injured by coal from a slip which fell over two sprags as he was working with his father.

ECKERSLEY James - 1880 - 22/03/1880 – Age 56 – Stoneman. Ellerbeck, Hic-bibi Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Coppull, Lancashire. Roof falling from a slip where he was drawing a prop. King coal.

ECKERSLEY James - 1887 - 19/01/1887 – Age 16 - Taker off. Wharton No.1, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Killed by an escaped tub on gig brow. He was at the gig at the second landing when a full tub standing at the landing above being struck by empty tub, was pushed over the stop blocks.

ECKERSLEY John (injured) - 1888 - 17/01/1888 – Age 16 - Asst at engine brow. Shakerley Nelson, William Ramsden, Lancashire. Hand and fingers crushed as he was foolishly allowing the ascending rope to run though his hand.

ECKERSLEY John - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 33 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

ECKERSLEY Joseph - 1881 - 19/12/1881 – Age 31 – Collier. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 48 killed.

ECKERSLEY T. (injured) - 1883 - 31/01/1883 – Age 30 – Miner. Manor, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co., Lancashire. Fall of coal from a slip.

ECKERSLEY William - 1886 - 13/08/1886 – Age 54. Woodend, John Speakman, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in the north-west workings. 38 lost.

ECLEY J. - 1887 - 26/12/1887 – Driver. Harecastle, Sir George Elliot and Co., Stoke, Staffordshire. Stumbled and fell and was run over by tubs.

EDDLESTON Richard - 1885 - 05/02/1885 – Age 15 – Engineman. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The boy was in charge of an air engine drawing tubs up brow and he appears to have gone round to the front of the drum whilst the engine was running for some purpose not evident and got caught by the rope and dragged against the drum and crushed. There were some broken wires in the rope which would make it more likely to catch his clothing.

EDDLESTON Thomas - 1882 - 21/10/1882 – Age 55 – Pitman. Ravenhead, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was riding on the edge of a sinking hoppet and was thrown off through the guider of the hoppet catching in the shaft for an instant. The hoppet then fell suddenly for 2 or 3 yards, and he was jerked off.

EDDLESTONE E. - 1888 - 25/09/1888 – Age 31 – Collier. Dukinfield, Dukinfield Coal Co., Stockport, Cheshire. Fall of roof.

EDDY Henry - 1885 - 31/08/1885 – Age 37 – Timberman. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Deceased whilst engaged putting in a skip road in the old engine shaft stood on one of the dividing which was improperly footed. It gave way precipitating him in the shaft. Deceased had himself put in this dividing.

EDDY John (injured) - 1889 - 01/07/1889 – Age 40 – Shaftsman. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Eddy was engaged at the bottom of the engine shaft 6 fathom's below the 394 level sending up stuff which was being drawn by his comrades. The latter not observing after emptying one kibble that there was a good deal of slack rope threw the kibble back into the shaft. The sudden jerk broke the rope and the kibble fell on the man below inflicting a severe cut on his back and breaking two of his ribs.

EDDY John - 1885 - 16/12/1885 – Age 45 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), Wheal Owles Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Unexpected fall of ground.

EDDY Thomas (injured) - 1888 - 26/06/1888 – Age 16 – Labourer. Great Works, Consolidated (metalliferous) Breage, Helston, Cornwall. While waiting on the masons fell from the scaffold 6 feet and broke his arm.

EDDY William - 1885 - 07/12/1885 – Age 32 – Sinker. Penrhiwfer, Glamorgan Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Fell down pit. 2 killed.

EDDY William H. - 1888 - 22/08/1888 – Age 37 - Mine agent. Clogau (metalliferous). He went on to the top of a small windmill used for working the pumps and after sitting there for 25 minutes watching it work he stood up in order to come down. Unfortunately, he slipped fell into the gearing and was so badly crushed that he died.

EDEN Daniel - 1888 - 24/11/1888 – Age 16 - Horse driver. Pelsall, Pelsall Coal and Iron Co., Pelsall, Staffordshire. Died 25th November. Found lying dead in front of an empty tub to which the horse was attached.

EDEN Robert - 1884 - 10/04/1884 – Age 48 – Hewer. Wardley, John Bowes and Partners, Wardley, Durham. Crushed by tubs on engine plane.

EDGAR Henry - 1884 - 12/04/1884 – Age 40 – Collier. Cadzow, Cadzow Coal Co., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face, removing stoops.

EDGE Ernest - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 18 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

EDGE J. - 1882 - 16/12/1882 – Age 24 – Collier. Ubberley, Chatterley Coal and Iron Co., Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fell out of cage.

EDGE John (injured) - 1888 - 07/08/1888 – Age 53 – Miner. Newton No.2, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by roof stone falling where he was cutting to make a turn place for tubs.

EDGE John (injured) - 1888 - 29/07/1888 – Age 28 – Dayman. Tong, Executors of Jethro Scowcroft, Lancashire. Ankle crushed by falling from the roof in an old road which he was preparing for a gig brow.

EDGE John - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Age 16 – Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas 68 killed.

EDGE John Henry - 1880 - 30/06/1880 – Age 14 - Screen boy. No.5 Clay Cross, Clay Cross Coal and Iron Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Assisting to move railway waggons and was crushed between the buffers.

EDGE Leigh - 1888 - 23/11/1888 – Age 43 – Filler. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Back hurt roof falling a prop having been knocked out in turning a tub.

EDGE Lot - 1884 - 01/02/1884 – Age 46 - Engine tenter. Botany Bay, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co., Lancashire. Steam crane breaking off the pivot and falling into the canal.

EDGE Richard - 1888 - 05/07/1888 – Age 30 – Proptaker. Crow Orchard, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had drawn 17 or props and was knocking out another with his hammer when a large slab fell suddenly and caught him before he could get away. The roof was apparently very good and he does not appear to have taken as much care as usual in consequence.

EDMONDSON Charles - 1882 - 13/07/1882 - Age 35 – Miner. Skelton (ironstone), Bell Bros Ltd., Guisborough, Yorkshire. Died from the effects of a severe blow on head by fall of stone while bringing it down on the 1st Oct. last.

EDMUNDS C.L. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 50 - Bottom cutter. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

EDMUNDS John - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 16. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Trimdon Cemetery.

EDMUNDS John - 1887 - 03/11/1887 – Age 64 – Collier. Kay’s Slope, Blaenavon Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Blaenavon, Monmouth. Fall of roof which occurred between the props and the face a space of about three to four feet.

EDMUNDS Lewis - 1881 - 22/07/1881 – Age 34 – Collier. Tynewydd, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

EDMUNDS S. - 1889 - 02/07/1889 – Age 65 - Coal picker. Black Lake, Black Lake Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Run over by tubs on the tramway.

EDMUNDS Walter - 1887 - 13/06/1887 – Age 21 – Collier. Harris’ Navigation, Harris’ Navigation Colliery Co., Treharris, Glamorgan. Fall of top coal while, holing out the bottom. Six-feet seam. Long wall. Died 24th November.

EDMUNDSTON William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 25/11/1889 – Miner. Stonelaw, FR Reid, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. While firing a shot he failed to retire far enough.

EDSON C. - 1883 - 13/03/1883 – Age 30 – Collier. Monk Bretton, Monk Bretton Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

EDWARD Charles - 1886 - 11/09/1886 – Age 16 months. Hastings Whiston, Wigan and Whiston Coal Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. The child was left by its nurse on the railway 500 yards from the colliery when it was run over by a train of waggons.

EDWARD David (injured) - 1881 - 14/02/1881 – Age 60 - Engine driver. Oakeley Upper (slate), Festiniog. He was shutting the sliding door of the mill house when it fell upon him, owing probably to there being ice and snow underneath which caused the wheels, by which it was hung, to get off the rail. 2 weeks off.

EDWARDS Abraham - 1885 - 16/01/1885 – Age 55 – Collier. Cymmer, G Insole and Son, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of stone.

EDWARDS Adam - 1884 - 25/04/1884 – Age 72 – Fireman. Gatewen, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Found dead in the stables underground supposed to have been from heart disease.

EDWARDS Albert J - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 28 – Collier. Mossfields, Hawley and Bridgwood Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Explosion 64 killed.

EDWARDS Arthur - 1880 - 10/05/1880 – Age 17 - Door boy. Nantmelyn, Executrix of late M Jones, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

EDWARDS Arthur - 1881 - 11/01/1881 – Age 18 - Collier’s boy. Taibach, Aberdare and Plymouth Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of clod.

EDWARDS Benjamin (injured) - 1888 - 13/06/1888 – Age 36 – Miner. Halkin (metalliferous). Some rock which he was endeavouring to dislodge after blasting fell on to the platform upon which he was standing and tilting it up caused him to drop 10 or 11ft. into the level below. 4 weeks off.

EDWARDS Benjamin - 1887 - 23/04/1887 – Age 57 – Collier. Wrexham, Wrexham and Acton Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was resetting a bar which had been blown out by a shot and was driving up the prop under it when it sprang back and the bar with a small quantity of dirt fell on him.

EDWARDS Daniel T. - 1882 - 20/11/1882 – Age 12 - Collier’s boy. Bargedhoug Work, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

EDWARDS David (injured) - 1886 - 14/01/1886 – Age 33 – Miner. Braichgoch (slate). A stone rolled down a heap of rubbish onto to his foot. 8 days off.

EDWARDS David - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 16. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery Single man.

EDWARDS David - 1882 - 18/12/1882 – Age 44 – Rockman. Oakley Upper (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. Explosion while ramming in the 2nd. layer of tamping with an iron bar upon a charge of one cartridge of guncotton and 4oz. of gunpowder. He supposes that he took the head of a match out of his pocket with the tamping. It was a pillaring hole, and required Only 1 inch of tamping rammed in gently. 15 days off.

EDWARDS David - 1886 - 29/12/1886 – Age 77 - Lamp examiner. Llwynypia, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Llwynypia, Glamorgan. Caught by a journey of empty trams as he was walking up an engine plane which was roomy and provided with manholes.

EDWARDS David - 1887 - 24/02/1887 – Age 52 – Shifter. Brynkinalt, Brynkinalt Collieries Ltd., Chirk, Flint. Inquest attended. He was helping the gang rider to put two loaded tubs on the road which had got off in the engine plane when a piece of the side fell off and got down a bar with some roof on to deceased. The side was evidently loosened by the tubs bumping violently against it.

EDWARDS David - 1888 - 05/09/1888 – Age 35 – Sinker. Gorseinon John Glasbrook, Swansea, Glamorgan. Fell off scaffold while screwing a bolt in rising column of 14in. pipes. Sinking pit.

EDWARDS Ebenezer (injured) - 1884 - 20/10/1884 – Age 41 – Miner. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. Blow on the head from the handle of a crab winch while assisting to lift some pump-rods underground. 12 days off.

EDWARDS Edward (injured) - 1885 - 07/11/1885 – Age 30 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). He was tramming a load of rubbish when the waggon capsized and caught him against the rock at the side of the road. 12 weeks off.

EDWARDS Edward (injured) - 1888 - 18/05/1888 – Age 17 – Slate dresser. Braichgoch (slate). While dressing slate with a guillotine machine he accidentally slipped and put his hand under the knife two fingers cut off. 13 weeks off.

EDWARDS Edward (injured) - 1889 - 14/05/1889 – Age 50 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous). He was a tributer looking for a better pitch. While working down a piece of the side of a stope with a crowbar, some of the rock fell on his leg and broke the small bone just above the ankle. 4 months off.

EDWARDS Edward - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 50 – Labourer. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

EDWARDS Edward - 1883 - 01/01/1883 – Age 34 – Haulier. Letty Shenkin, Burnyeat Brown and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Died from injuries received Dec 22nd 1882.

EDWARDS Edward - 1883 - 15/03/1883 – Age 17 – Miner. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. Fell down the shaft while trying to put some borers into a descending skip. The shaft was fenced. Possibly while leaning over he was struck by the descending skip.

EDWARDS Edward - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 52 – Contractor. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

EDWARDS Edward - 1886 - 25/08/1886 – Age 17 – Haulier. Tylor’s, A Tylor and Co. Ltd., Tylorstown, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in a heading where the roof was strong clift and was not thought to require timber.

EDWARDS Edward - 1888 - 26/11/1888 – Age 21 - Hooker on. Bailey Hill, Bailey Hill Colliery Co Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inquiries made. He had knocked the journey off and just as it started a coat rolled off the road side, when be attempted to reach it between the tubs and he was caught against a low bar.

EDWARDS Edward jnr. - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 17 – Stoneman. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

EDWARDS Evan (injured) - 1886 - 09/04/1886 - Age 49 – Miner. Bridgewater No.1, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall of dirt from under a bed of coal where they were widening out a tunnel. The chargeman had shortly before examined the place as: he thought safely. An error of judgement on the chargeman's part. 1 killed 1 injured.

EDWARDS Evan - 1882 - 02/12/1882 – Age 26 – Rider. Dunraven, Mortgagees of Thomas Joseph, Treherbert, Glamorgan. Killed by falling under trams on engine plane.

EDWARDS Frederick - 1886 - 10/09/1886 – Age 15 - Putter on. Wrexham, Wrexham and Acton Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The lad was sent down the brake with a message and on returning went into a refuge place until the empty journey had passed him. He then jumped on the last tub and rode nearly to the top, when he endeavoured to get out (knowing it was a breach of the rules) and his back caught against a bar causing injuries from which he died on 10th Sept.

He called out to the man at the top to go on when having omitted to hook on the empty tub at the bottom the full tub came down and caught him.

EDWARDS Hugh - 1884 - 08/04/1884 – Age 44 – Slate. Sawyer Braichgoch (slate). While they were endeavouring to raise a tram of rubbish, which had got off the rails a stone fell and killed them on the spot. 2 killed.

EDWARDS James - 1882 - 07/11/1882 – Age 32 – Stallman. Clay Cross No.7, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Explosion of gas 48 killed.

EDWARDS James - 1887 - 08/04/1887 – Age 25 – Collier. Bedwellty No.2, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof. He and two others were coming out from work when the first man noticed that the top was working and told the others about it. The roof fell directly afterwards killing Edwards and injuring another man. The survivors think the deceased was trying to pull the stone down thinking only a small fall was coming. Three pairs of timbers were broken.

EDWARDS John - 1883 - 21/12/1883 – Age 47 – Metalman. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was engaged in getting the bottom and timbering the road. He had done some work under a thin piece of rock top and had put one prop under it but this was not sufficient to support it and it fell upon him. The fireman who visited him shortly before the accident ought to have seen the danger and instructed him to get the stone down.

EDWARDS Morgan - 1885 - 11/11/1885 – Age 35 – Haulier. Abercarn, Abercarn Coal Co., Monmouthshire. His horse took fright at a stone falling near him and pulled the tram off the road the haulier got crushed against a door and died next day from his injuries.

EDWARDS Peter - 1888 - 10/08/1888 – Age 38 – Collier. Plas Power, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was knocking out his last sprag and foolishly stood in front of the coal which falling suddenly against a prop knocked it out and against deceased killing him on the spot.

EDWARDS Richard (injured) - 1881 - 06/09/1881 – Age 52 – Shaftman. Lisburne (metalliferous), Devils Bridge. He was sending his pick up in the kibble from the bottom of the engine shaft to the level, a distance of seven fathoms. It fell out and struck him, breaking the left collar bone. Four and half months off.

EDWARDS Richard (injured) - 1889 - 23/05/1889 – Age 45 – Miner. Pwll-gwyn-llan (metalliferous). On the afternoon of the 22nd May, some mischievous boys had thrown large stones some weighing half a cwt. down the footway and broke some of the ladders and platforms. Richard Edwards, the first man to go down on the following morning, had a severe fall, owing to the first ladder giving way just as he began to descend. 5 weeks off.

EDWARDS Richard - 1888 - 16/02/1888 – Age 48 – Trammer. Oakley (slate). In contravention of the rules of the mine they trammed three loaded waggons on to a bridge which only one was allowed to pass at a time. The bridge broke and they fell 60 feet and were killed. 5 killed.

EDWARDS Samuel - 1885 - 07/03/1885 – Age 55 – Collier. Plaskynaston, Plaskynaston Coal Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inquest attended. Deceased was slightly injured by a stone which he neglected to pull down when told by the manager. He walked home and had a poultice put on but going on soon after in the cold inflammation of the lungs set in.

EDWARDS Samuel - 1887 - 23/04/1887 Age - 15 – Collier. Abercarn, Abercarn Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. He was coming out to the shaft with a tram riding on the front end of it. The pony was going fast and at the points the tram got off the rails he jumped but was caught and dragged some distance and his spine injured. He died May 1st.

EDWARDS Simon - 1887 - 07/07/1887 – Age 45 - Miner agent. Van Consols (metalliferous), Montgomery. Breaking of a wire rope while he was ascending a shaft in a kibble. With the exception of the pumping machinery the mine bad been at a standstill for a long time; the deceased had gone down to see the pumps and was being drawn up to save the labour of climbing. The rope broke because of extreme corrosion of the wires for a length of 4 or 5 feet where it was standing in a hole of the roof of the engine house. If proper examination the state of the rope would have been discovered. The deceased ought to have examined the rope himself.

They were working in some overhand stopes when the top of an adjacent pass (mill) collapsed causing the stuff upon which they were standing to run. They were carried down and entangled with the stuff receiving severe bruising and some flesh wounds. The pass was one which they themselves had built with large stones. 2 injured. Four and half weeks off.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1883 - 23/07/1883 – Age 35 – Collier. Harwarden, Harwarden Collieries Co Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was driving a narrow place when a piece of coal rolled out from a fault on the lower side of the level. This appeared to be purely accidental.

Deceased was pulling down some coal which had been hole when a large piece rolled over bringing with it some roof from a slip. The place was well timbered.

EDWARDS Thomas - 1885 - 31/07/1885 – Age 16 – Filler. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of top coal knocking out two props. This happened at the spot where the men got their meals and had been examined by the fireman an hour before the accident.

They were working out a pillar next to the waste when a sudden gulch came and the top coal fell in drawing road capping 4 or 5 props and a bar and falling on the deceased who had been filling a tub. Recommended them to use bars in similar places in future.

He was in the act of drilling for a shot when a huge mass of limestone 20 tons in weight fell from the side above him and killed him. Cause encircling joints or slips.

EGERTON Joseph - 1882 - 24/06/1882 – Age 54 – Stallman. Cannock Chase, Cannock Chase Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. Injured on 21st June when pulling a large piece of coal from a fast end of the working face near a fault, it suddenly burst off and struck him. Died this day.

EILBECK George - 1886 – 22/03/1886 – Age 52 – Miner. Ehen (metalliferous), Ehen Mining Co., Egremont, Cumberland. Fall of shale from side. Engaged driving a shale drift. The manager was in the place on the Saturday morning and ordered Eilbeck to place two sets of timbers. On visiting the place on the Monday morning, the manager found the place not timbered he immediately set the miners to put the timber in while engaged, a piece of shale fell and fractured Eilbeck's leg, from which he died.

ELLAM J.W. - 1880 – 15/12/1880 – Age 21 – Collier. Gregory Spring, Gregory Spring Coal Co., Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Fall of roof 2 killed.

ELLAM John - 1888 – 09/02/1888 – Age 30 – Collier. Bamfurlong, Cross Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made and inquest attended. Deceased had a shot which failed to bring all the coal down. He reset his sprag and went on holing when a piece of top coal and clod fell over the sprag on to his foot. Two toes were amputated lockjaw set in and he died 19th.

ELIAS Thomas (injured) 1886 - 13/05/1886 – Age 28 – Miner. Grogwinion (metalliferous). He fell down a pass hole into which he had been tipping stuff. It is not known how he happened to fall into it. Spine fractured. Incurable.

ELLIS James (injured) - 1888 - 12/09/1888 – Age 53 - Clay miner. Watts Blake (metalliferous), Newton Abbott, Cornwall. Was removing a piece of timber in one of the levels when a lump of clay fell out of the side and striking against his leg fractured it between the ankle and knee.

ELLIS John - 1881 - 11/03/1881 – Age 56 – Collier. Coedpoeth, Vron Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A stone fell from between two slips on to him. The place was well timbered the props being set from 3 to 4 feet apart.

ELLIS John - 1882 - 12/06/1882 – Age 21 – Miner. Prince Llewellyn (slate), Dolwyddelen, Caernarvon. Explosion of about 2lbs. of gunpowder, the contents of his tin canister, from his candle falling upon the powder as he was pouring it into a hole, in order to charge it for blasting. Compound fracture of the thigh. He died on 13th July.
