ELLIS Owen Pierce (injured) - 1888 - 05/06/1888 – Age 36 – Miner. Votty & Boydd (slate). He fired a hole charged with gelatine dynamite but it failed to do its work. He recharged the hole with guillotine dynamite made it quite ready for firing and went to put away his tools. On returning in order to set fire to the fuse the charge unexpectedly exploded. Possibly there was something left smouldering from the first charge which ignited the second. 23 weeks off.
ELLIS Richard Owen (injured) - 1881 - 04/02/1881 – Age 17 - Slate maker. Llechwedd (slate), Festiniog. He had his hand struck by the revolving knife of a slate dressing machine while carelessly throwing out of his tea can. 19 weeks off.
ELLIS Robert - 1885 - 18/08/1885 – Age 47 – Miner. Minera (metalliferous), Premature fall of ground which they were removing after a blast in an old abandoned pitch or working, they were searching for zinc ore without the knowledge of the agents of the mine. 2 killed.
ELLIS Robert - 1889 - 18/10/1889 – Age 32 – Miner. Llechwedd (slate). Unexpected fall of a slab of rock known as the 9 inch band from the roof of his working place and was only about four feet high. Some dangerous pieces of 9 inch band had been taken down six days before the accident but the part that fell was considered safe by the agents.
ELLIS Thomas - 1885 - 21/12/1885 – Age 36 – Collier. Coed, Poeth Vron Colliery Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of roof from slips bared by the deceased when holing at the top. He had delayed setting his timber too long, and whilst doing so the fall came.
ELLIS William (injured) - 1882 - 04/05/1882 – Age 26 - Kibble filler. Assheton, United (metalliferous), Pwllheli. While the trammers were repairing their tram waggon, they accidentally let the body of it fall into the plot or lodge as Ellis was passing; his foot was struck. 2 weeks off.
ELLIS William (injured) - 1885 - 25/05/1885 – Age 40 – Carter. Burton Nook, Denton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured on the surface in the colliery yard by tipping his cart up. He had put his cart under the tipper and forgetting to fasten the horses belly band he knocked the back support from under the cart, when it tipped up and caused the accident.

ELLISON Thomas - 1884 - 29/12/1884 – Age 16 - Signal minder. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co., Cramlington, Northumberland. Crushed between tub and door.
ELMS Samuel - 1889 - 14/01/1889 – Age 48 – Hewer. East Howle, Carlton Iron Co., Ferry Hill, Co. Durham. Fall of coal whilst sitting kirving; he had met with two slips where it gave way. Killed by a fall of stone. He had apparently been in the act of curving a jud when the stone came down upon him and was thus found by one of the deputies. He was a widower and leaves five children. EMERY William - 1887 - 01/01/1887 – Age 64 – Banksman. Braysdown, Daubeny and Scobel, Radstock, Somerset. When pushing a tram on the top of the pit another man pushed a tram against him and injured his finger. He continued his work and also on the following Monday. After that he complained of feeling ill and left work. He died on the 10th from pyaemia.

ETHERIDGE Griffith (injured) - 1881 - 09/02/1881 – Age 66 – Carpenter. Oakeley, Middle (slate), Festiniog. He and some other men were moving the body of an iron tram waggon when it accidentally fell upon his foot. Thirty seven and half weeks off.
EUSTACE John - 1882 - 10/03/1882 – Age 26 – Collier. Douglas Bank, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased strained himself when pushing a tub, but nothing was said about it at the colliery office until after his death on the 14th.
EUSTICE Peter (injured) - 1889 - 23/08/1889 – Age 30 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. While turning a borer in a stope under the 388 fathom level a stone which came from the hanging wall struck Eustice breaking his collar bone and bruising his knee.
EVA John (injured) - 1888 - 16/01/1888 – Age 21 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Bursting of some ground after blasting.
EVA Thomas (injured) - 1889 - 27/02/1889 – Age 19 – Miner. Tregurtha, Downs (metalliferous), Marazion, Cornwall. Whilst on his way to the surface the young man fell a distance of 4 fathoms through stepping out of the ladder too soon and broke his leg. He miscalculated the distance of the sollar from him and stepped into the shaft.

Fall of side (rock) on main road, 50 yds. from shaft where it was being enlarged. All that appeared loose had been taken down and the sides were being dressed to receive large timbers. 4ft. Seam, Long wall.
EVANS Abel - 1884 - 27/08/1884 – Age 58 – Collier. Penrhos, Brymbo Co., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The timber had been drawn at night to allow the top coals to fall, but when the men went in on the following morning, they found it still standing, and deceased commenced to cut it when it suddenly fell and caught deceased, who ran under it instead of going in the opposite direction.

EVANS Benjamin - 1882 - 02/02/1882 – Age 14 – Screener. Hafod, Ruabon Coal Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inquiries made. The boy was assisting to move the waggons under the screens, when he was caught between the buffers. The danger to young boys employed at such work was pointed out and the manager promised to give the matter his attention.

EVANS Benjamin - 1888 - 05/11/1888 – Age 17 – Putter. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. The pony started off while he was getting on to the limbers and his head was crushed between the tub and a prop.
EVANS Benjamin - 1888 - 22/08/1888 - Asst. examiner. Cefn, Brithdir Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Bargoed, Glamorgan. The breaking out of some water which had collected behind a dirt stopping or pack in an old abandoned rise heading. They were trying to get past the stopping and on disturbing it to make a way to creep through, the water which they were not aware of burst away. They were told by the overman to go by a different road but presumably they thought this would be the better way for the object they had in view, namely, the ventilating of a place higher up. 2 killed.
EVANS C. - 1883 - 09/10/1883 – Age 40 – Collier. Maesteg, Merthyr W Davies, Maesteg, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.
EVANS Cadwaladr - 1883 - 27/04/1883 – Age 24 – Miner. Great Manod (metalliferous). A hole charged with gun cotton missed fire apparently and exploded as Evans was just beginning to pick out the tamping with an iron rod. The hole had hung fire 20 or 30 minutes.
EVANS Charles (injured) - 1888 – 30/12/1888 – Age 40 – Timberman. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. In climbing underground in the engine shaft carrying an axe in his hand he fell away three and a half fathoms spraining his left ankle and slightly cutting his head. The cause of his falling away was that one of the ladder staves was defective but it was part of his duty to see that the ladder road was kept in repair.

EVANS Charles - 1882 – 23/03/1882 – Age 20 – Brakesman. Hafod, Ruabon Coal Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was assisting to shunt some waggons, and in running past the points was struck by the lever and thrown under the wheels of the loco which was in motion at the time, and so caused the lever to fly back.
EVANS Charles Richard - 1887 – 26/12/1887 – Age 31 – Blacksmith. Stanley, SR Cox, Kilburn, Derbyshire. While ascending the shaft the engineman stopped the cage in the shaft owing to the opposite cage being fast at the pit top. It is supposed that he tried to lower himself down the conductors and fell to the shaft bottom.

EVANS Daniel (injured) - 1885 – 20/10/1885 – Age 49 – Miner. Bower, James William and Robert Marland and Co., Lancashire. Fatally crushed between a prop and a piece of coal which slid away from a fault at the face of his bay as he was about to set another prop. The accident was considered trivial for some weeks but he died from the effects 20th. Jan. 1856.

He was working on the cradle or hanging scaffold in a sinking pit about 20 yards from the bottom and about four yards above the water. He was steadying a hoppet into its winding position; the hoppet displaced some planks over an opening in the scaffold through which he fell into the water and was drowned.

His waggon had gone off the rails and he went further along the road for assistance of some men who promised to help. On going back towards the waggon his light went out and instead of waiting till the men came up to him he went on in the dark and strayed off the road, and fell the next level. 24 days off.

A stone fell just within one of the mouthings and rolled into the shaft, striking the cage in which deceased with others were preparing to ascend. It appeared to have been an unforeseen accident.

EVANS Richard - 1886 - 14/01/1886 – Age 20 – Drawer. Gibfield, Fletcher Burrows and Co. Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof stone closed the face in consequence of one out of three props under it having been jerked out through him pushing a tub into the brow while the gig or spinney chain which went round the prop was slack. The place had previously been on the weight or move and these props were set under the stone to make it secure. Accidental.
EVANS Richard - 1888 - 08/12/1888 – Age 25 – Timberman. South Wheal Crofty (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Employed in putting in timber in shaft. While engaged in receiving timber for his work a plank that was being let down to him slipped through the lashing and fell on his head. The lad who had lashed the timber to send down was too young to have been given such work to do but was employed by the deceased himself and as he had been a sailor was thought quite competent to lash timber properly.

EVANS Robert - 1884 - 12/03/1884 – Age 56 – Screenman. Elm, George Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inquest attended. Some waggons were being lowered to the screens and the first one ran a few feet in advance of the others. He went to it, and was pushing with his back to the buffer to keep it going, when, owing to some slight obstruction on the road it stopped, and those following immediately jammed up against him.

EVANS Samuel - 1885 - 13/03/1885 – Age 24 - Horse driver. Abmblecote (fireclay), John Hall and Co., Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Horse ran away with empty tub in which Evans was sitting. The tub left the rails, drew out some timber, and the falling roof killed him.
EVANS Solomon - 1882 - 22/09/1882 – Age 47 – Collier. Hafod, Ruabon Coal Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting his coal down when a piece of the top coal unexpectedly fell from a slip on to him.
EVANS Stephen - 1888 - 29/12/1888 – Age 21 – Collier. Varteg Hill, John Vipond and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Fall of roof. He deferred setting timber which he knew was required and it resulted in his being so seriously injured that he died 29th of May from the effects after my 1888 Report had been completed.

EVANS Thomas (injured) - 1881 - 15/08/1881 – Age 25 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate), Festiniog. Premature explosion while firing powder inserted in a crack produced by pillaring hole probably the snuff fell upon grains of powder lying about the top of the crack. He lost and eye. 11 weeks off.

EVANS Thomas - 1886 - 21/05/1886 – Age 19 - Rope hitcher. Wain Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. In trying to prevent an accident in the haulage road he got crushed between the trams and died after having his leg amputated.

EVANS Thomas - 1887 - 16/04/1887 – Age 32 – Labourer. Rock Varteg Hill, John Vipond and Co. Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Injured between a tram and the side of the road. He died the following day. He was in front of the tram taking out a sprag when the pony went on and he got crushed.
EVANS Thomas - 1887 - 30/03/1887 – Age 24 – Collier. Emily Drift, AH Thomas, Llansamlet, Glamorgan. Fall of pan shaped stone three and a half feet diameter from roof close to face and between props 2ft. 9ins. from face. Roof fireclay. Seam 22ins. Pillar and stall.
EVANS Thomas - 1888 - 04/12/1888 – Age 28 – Engineman. Pillowell Level, Holmes Bros. and Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Asphyxiated by carbonic oxide gas or white damp resulting from boiler fires underground. The top of the upcast shaft was so contracted that the smoke and products of combustion overpowered the ventilating current (which was at that time affected by a fall of water in the shaft) and accumulated in the mine. 3 killed.

EVANS Thomas - 1889 - 11/12/1889 – Age 13 - Door boy. No.2 Steam Tonypandy, Glamorgan. On hearing a haulier calling to his horse to stop having started without the full load while the haulier was shackling deceased left the door at which he was stationed met the horse and got under the trains. Road, 14ft. wide and 9ft high.
EVANS Thomas - 1889 - 13/11/1889 – Age 16 – Haulier. Seven Sisters, Evans and Bevan, Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (coal) 9ft. x 6ft. x ft. on road. Two pairs of double timbers discharged. An empty train had been upset on side road, and in passing with a loaded team it struck the empty and knocked out the arm of a pair of timbers.
EVANS Thomas - 1889 - 22/05/1889 – Age 46 – Roadman. Tylor’s, A Taylor and Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Struck by empty journey on engine plane. A tail rope (used for drawing full trams from a further point than the end of engine plans proper) broke with the load off the rails and the empty journey sprung forward.
EVANS Thomas - 1889 - 29/06/1889 – Age 17 – Collier. Dunraven, Mortgagees of Thomas Joseph, Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (4ft. x 2.5ft. x 9ins. thick in the middle with thin edge all round) at face. Gob wall 4ft. back and some props between it and coal but none where the stone fell from. Yard Seam, 2ft. 5ins. thick. Long wall.
EVANS W. - 1883 - 18/01/1883 – Age 17 - Door boy. Celynen Newport, Abercarne & Black Vein Steam Coal Co., Celynen, Monmouthshire. A haulier with which he worked was lowering down some loaded trams to make up a journey, and deceased tried to put in the coupling hook but missed the ring and was crushed. He had been ordered not to go between the trams.

EVANS W.R. - 1889 - 09/09/1889 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. North Dunraven, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of side (clod) 6ft. long 10ft. thick which had been left overhanging but not spragged while deceased was filling coal from below it and the collier 6yds. away. Two Feet Nine seam, 3ft. thick. Long wall.

EDMENDS William - 1886 - 13/12/1886 - Age 47 - Night bankman. Booth Hill, Evan Fielding and Mills, Lancashire. Fatal in the shaft. After being down about the pumps he signalled to be drawn up but delayed getting into the cage until the engine started when he was thrown out. He had not been long accustomed to pit work.

EVANS William - 1882 - 23/01/1882 – Age 18 – Labourer. Plas Kynaston, Plas Kynaston Coal Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was riding on tubs up an incline, contrary to rules when he caught his head against a bar.
EVANS William - 1883 - 24/03/1883 – Age 16 - Ore dresser. Minera (metalliferous). Some boys had been taken from the dressing floors to assist in moving some railway waggon wheels up a slope. After this had been done Evans remained though not wanted while the men were rolling a pair of wheels with the axle up two pieces of timber into a railway truck one of the pieces of timber tilted by the wheel slipping into the truck, and Evans was somehow jammed between the pieces of timber and had his neck broken.

EVANS William - 1885 - 24/04/1885 – Age 56 – Screener. Hafod-y-bwch, Ruabon Coal Co Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made. The deceased was crushed between a waggon and one of the uprights of the stage which was too near the line. Alterations are to be made to the stage with a view to making it safer. Died 12th. June.

EVANS William - 1886 - 08/04/1886 – Age 30 – Collier. Dynant, Dynant Colliery Co., Pontyberem, Glamorgan. Stone fell on him while working in his stall. He had put up a prop which was uncapped by the fall.
EVANS William - 1886 - 24/04/1886 – Age 56 – Collier. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Coal Co., Pen-y-graig, Glamorgan. Fall of coal which injured his spine slightly at the time but which developed by degrees and caused paralysis from the results of which according to verdict of coroner's jury he died on the 24th December.
EVANS William - 1887 - 10/05/1887 – Age 16 – Collier. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Injured by a fall of coal and died the same evening. He had just begun to hole in the Elled coal, which is about four feet thick, with a rock top. The coal here usually requires blasting. Suddenly about one and half tons burst out of the face and fell on the boy. Two men of great experience in mining stated that in their opinion no forethought could have prevented the accident.
EVANS William - 1887 - 20/04/1887 – Age 42 – Collier. Bailey Hill, Bailey Hill Colliery Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inquiries made and inquest attended. A small piece of stone fell from the roof striking deceased on the side but he was so slightly injured that he walked home a distance of 24 miles and on the same day walked hack to the colliery. A few days after he caught cold and inflammation set in he afterwards died from lockjaw.
EVANS William - 1888 - 26/04/1888 – Age 20 – Labourer. Sirhowy No.9, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Sirhowy, Monmouth. While engaged building side walls in an engine plane for an air crossing a large quantity of roof gave way without warning and knocked out the timbers which had been set to make it secure. 2 killed.

EVERETT J. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 59 – Timberman, Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.
EWING Walter - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 20 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.
EXELL James - 1880 - 08/04/1880 – Age 24 – Collier. No.15, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouth. Fall of coal. He had worked out the bottom coal and omitted to prop the top which he knew was unsafe.
EXLEY W. - 1888 - 28/03/1888 – Age 55 – Byeworker. Haigh, Fountain and Son, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
EYEBALL John (injured) - 1885 - 22/10/1885 – Age 36 – Daywageman. Gibfield, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Injured by a stone in a brow on the Arley mine from under which they had knocked three props having debated with his comrade whether the stone was solid or not it fell upon him. His own error of judgement.

EYRE George (injured) - 1886 - 14/10/1886 – Age 40 – Labourer. Agecroft, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd. Lancashire. Injured by falling into a drop at the canal dock. In pushing tubs into the drop, he pushed one into the wrong cage and fell after it. A self-acting fence has been added.
