Decease, who was in charge of the loading stage was lowering a waggon and finding it going too fast, ran round the front to get to the brake. He was caught by the buffer and thrown against the stage.

Caused by an accumulation of gas, in some abandoned workings, being forced into the upcast shaft in an inflammable state and ignited by a fire lamp hanging in that shaft. 3 killed.

Timbers set in the horse road were knocked out by trams, drawn by a horse, which got off the rails, the stone which rested upon them also fell and killed him while riding on the trams the road seemed to be in good order.

While descending, in the morning, the cage left the guides, stuck in the shaft and then fell some fathoms. The deceased fell out but 2 others remained in the cage uninjured. 4 killed.

SANGER H. - 1883 - 03/12/1883 – Age 35 – Collier. Pennywell Road, Westbury Coal Co., Gloucestershire. He was working at the bottom of an incline and had a tram, which he was filling, supported by an iron rail between two props, the rail bent and he was crushed against the coal face, and died on the 6th.

SAUNDERS Roger - 1881 - 17/02/1881 – Age 15 – Doorboy. Coedpoeth, Iron Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inquiries made. Deceased was slightly injured through being knocked down by a donkey but was able to play about for two or three days, when he grew worse and continued to do so until the l9th. Mar. when he died from secondary inflammation of the brain caused, it was supposed, by the injury.

SAUNDERS William - 1887 - 12/07/1887 – Age 40 – Miner. Hodbarrow (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co., Millom, Lancashire. The deceased had fired a shot in the working face and commenced to dress the loose ore down when a piece fell out of the roof between the timbers and the face. The timbers were only 2 feet 6 inches off the face.

Fatal fall of roof from a slip about four yards from the face of a three yard level in the Cannel Mine where he was filling a tub. There was a row of props set and they considered it sufficiently timbered.

SCOTSON John - 1881 – 26/09/1881 – Age 44 – Collier. Ladies Lane, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased was slightly injured by a fall of roof on or about the 12th Aug but continued at his work and did not mention the matter to the officials until the 15th Aug. when he was confined to his bed. He died on the 26th Sept from inflammation of the bowels induced by the accident above mentioned.

SEAMAN Thomas - 1881 – 04/05/1881 – Age 71 – Blacksmith. Hawarden, Hawarden Collieries Co., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased and the horseman were descending the pit and on reaching the bottom the latter got out when the cage was suddenly lifted and he was caught against the bearer. The horseman stated that the signal was not given to the engineman who said that he was aware the men had gone down and consequently did not wait for the signal. This pit was not at work and the engineman’s attention was directed to a second pit worked by the same engine.

SEDDON Benjamin (injured) - 1885 - 12/04/1885 – Age 48 – Firebeater. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Burned while cleaning an underground boiler. Being in the habit of putting some petroleum into the boiler after cleaning to prevent scale accumulating, he and his comrade, on this occasion, without authority put naphtha, being short of petroleum, and on applying a lamp to the mud hole, with a view of seeing inside, the naphtha fumes ignited and injured him. His own mistake as well as his comrades.

SEDDON Jesse - 1886 - 04/02/1886 – Age 16 - Hooker on. Outwood Doe, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Fatal at bottom of brow by a tub running down, in consequence of the breakage of a coupling chain. He might have stood safely at either side of the brow. The chain broke at a latent defect in the welding and the catch drag had just been removed from behind the train in order to put a tub on the rails. Accidental.

Deceased had brought some empty waggons down the road, and was then pushing the first one, with his back to the buffer, leaving the others stationery, when another lot ,which he had neglected to secure, came down and bumping against those he had left standing, jammed him between the buffers.
