STRETTON Samuel - 1887 - 28/05/1887 – Age 40 – Collier. Annesley, Annesley Coal Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Went back to relight a missed shot it exploded and fatally injured him.

STRINGER Edward (injured) - 1880 - 12/08/1880 – Weighman. Stockfield, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Chadderton, Lancashire. Struck with an iron bar in trying to sprag a railway waggon that was running beyond the machine.
STRINGER R. - 1885 - 22/10/1885 – Age 56 – Collier. Monckton Main, Monckton Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
STRINGER Samuel - 1882 - 29/06/1882 – Age 68 – Loader. Hundall, Hundall Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Pushing a tub along the level when another man following with a loaded tub ran into him fatally crushing the deceased.
STRINGFELLOW Peter (injured) - 1889 - 27/12/1889 – Age 13 - Coal cleaner. Allens Green, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd., Lancashire. Leg fractured by a tipper (for tipping coal tubs), which moved as he was needlessly clearing through it when it was held down by some tipped coal. Inspection and inquiry.
STRINGFELLOW Richard - 1880 - 28/07/1880 – Age 52 – Quarryman. Crisp Delph (quarry), William March, Upholland, Lancashire. Killed by fall of stone. Died 21st Aug.
STRONG John - 1885 - 15/04/1885 – Age 24 – Collier. Wain Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co., Monmouthshire. Fall of stone. A slip which was invisible caused the stone over the coal to fall.
STRONG Leonard - 1887 - 05/05/1887 – Age 25 – Hewer. Trudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. While wedging some stone down, which appeared fast, he went under, for some purpose, when it fell on him.
STRONG Matthew - 1883 - 14/09/1883 – Age 14 – Driver. Pelton, Lord Dunsaney and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Arm broken and other bruises by being run over by a set of tubs. Died 21st Sept.
STRONG Peter - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 66. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed. Married.
STRONG Robert - 1887 - 26/01/1887 – Age 56 – Hewer. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co., Cramlington, Northumberland. Fall of stone.
STRONG William - 1887 - 01/06/1887 – Age 51 – Overman. Blackboy, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Suffocated by carbonic acid gas, he went into a place between two large falls where gas had accumulated.

STRUTHERS Robert - 1889 - 03/12/1889 – Age 15 - Waggon shifter. Blantyre No.4, William Dixon Ltd., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggon while spragging it.
STUART Henry - 1889 - 04/11/1889 – Age 19 – Putter. Hebburn, A Tyne Coal Co., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Burnt by blown out shot and died within a few days. 6 killed.

STURGESS Robert - 1883 - 25/07/1883 – Age 37 – Stallman. Dunston, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof coal.
SUDWORTH Joseph - 1886 - 14/10/1886 – Age 65 – Labourer. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was trying to cross the line in front of some waggons which were being shunted, and was run over.
SUDWORTH Thomas - 1883 - 24/07/1883 – Age 19 – Drawer. Pewfall No.3, Richard Evans and Co., Ashton, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The deceased was clearing away dirt from the face when a large stone fell from between three slips. The place required more timber setting and the fireman stated that he had instructed the collier to do so but it had been neglected.
SULLIVAN Cornelius (injured) - 1881 - 18/01/1881 – Miner. Berehaven, Berhaven Mining Co. Ltd., Allihies, Co. Cork, Ireland. Killed by dynamite exploding. No inquest held the cartridge being frozen they thoughtlessly warming it on the top of a hot iron tube instead of with warm water as recommended. 2 killed 5 injured. (shoulder).

SULLIVAN John - 1887 - 26/03/1887 – Age 20 – Haulier. George Powell, Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on heading while passing with horse and empty tram. Four sets of double timber had been discharged by the fall.
SULLIVAN John - 1889 - 05/04/1889 – Age 24 – Shunter. Sirhowy No.4, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Sirhowy, Monmouth. He was caught between the buffers of trucks which he was coupling to be ready for the engine.
SULY William - 1882 - 14/06/1882 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Coedcae, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Crushed between a tram and a post.
SUMMERFELL William - 1882 - 23/03/1882 – Age 59 – Enginewright. Castle Eden, Johnson and Reay, Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Scalded by an overflow of water from an underground condenser. Died on 31st.
SUMMERFIELD Harry - 1889 - 09/07/1889 – Age 52 - Stallman. Brands, Butterley Coal and Iron Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Slipped and fell on the roadway, sitting when returning to the pit bottom.
SUMMERHILL Thomas - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 24 – Collier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.
SUMMERS B. - 1886 - 18/11/1886 – Age 31 – Collier. Nunnery, Nunnery Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.
SUMMERS Ralph - 1887 - 22/03/1887 – Age 15 - Asst. hooker-on. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was passing across the sump, on a bearer contrary to rules, when he slipped and fell in and was drowned. It happened during the breakfast hour and he passed under the fence during the absence of the hooker on.

SUMNER William - 1888 - 13/01/1888 – Age 39 – Collier. Crawford No.2, Wigan, Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Injured 14th Nov. 1887 by a fall of top coal causing a broken leg.
SUNDERLAND, T. - 1884 - 21/06/1884 – Age 59 – Miner. Low Crompton, Oldham Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of top coal getting tender coal out of his own place.
SUTCH John - 1885 - 29/12/1885 – Age 47 – Sinker. Ashtons Green, Bromilow and Forster and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inquest attended. This man was the chargeman and was riding on the edge of hoppet, against the rules, when he fell out. He had been warned frequently to get properly into the hoppet both by the banksman and engineman but the officials do not appear to have taken sufficient care to enforce the rules.
SUTCLIFFE Abraham (injured) - 1889 - 17/06/1889 – Age 45 – Banksman. Bankhouse, Oldham Middleton & Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd. Lancashire. Head cut by the cage descending from the top landing as he was leaning over a fence rail brow. Inspection and inquiry.
SUTCLIFFE Smith (injured) - 1888 - 19/11/1888 – Age 13 - Ginny tenter. Towneley, Arley Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Arm hurt by being caught between the cage and the wooden casing, at the top of the pit, he was with eight other boys descending the shaft.
SUTHERLAND ? - 1887 - 18/01/1887 – Age 67 – Banksman. Whitehill, Archibald Hood, Lasswade, Midlothian. Run over by loco.
SUTTON Edward (injured) - 1886 - 29/04/1886 – Age 20 – Labourer. Woodend, John Speakman, Lancashire. Having pushed a tub into a hoist, above ground, and the hoist being unexpectedly started he stuck to the tub and was carried some distance and then fell. The persons who started the hoist without signal to be punished.

SUTTON John - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 26 – Wagoner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.
SUTTON Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 07/01/1885 – Age 50 – Metal stoneman. Alkrington, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by fall of timber, which he relied upon for safety, while pulling a stone where he was making room for arching. Error of judgement on his own part.
SUTTON W. - 1888 - 30/01/1888 – Age 50 – Byeworker. Roundwood, Roundwood Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Struck by corf.
SWADDLE Thomas - 1889 - 02/05/1889 – Age 28 – Hewer. Brandon, C Strakers and Love, Durham, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from between two slips at face of broken jud.
SWAIN J. - 1884 - 26/01/1884 – Age 23 – Collier. Park Hill, Victoria Coal and Coke Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fell from Stanley Main to Haigh Moor in shaft.
SWALL James - 1883 - 22/06/1883 – Age 24 – Hewer. Bowden Close, Pease and Partners Ltd., Crook, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from two slips while hewing in a jerkin.

SWAN John - 1883 - 08/12/1883 – Age 18 – Joiner. Ellismuir, Provan Hall Coal Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. When attempting to pass from one waggon to another whilst in motion.
SWAN Michael - 1884 - 22/08/1884 – Age 23 - Horse driver. Haswell, Haswell Shotton & Easington Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. While looking over the apparatus fence, the tub came down and catching his neck, killed him.
SWAN Thomas - 1881 - 11/08/1881 – Age 75 – Collier. Bogleshole No.4, James Dunlop and Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. Fell from cage while ascending, he had worked 68 years in the pit.
SWANTON Charles - 1889 - 06/02/1889 – Age 38 – Dayman. Nook, Crumbuke Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal by roof was assisting to take up landing plates and put down rails at the bottom of a brow. Inspection and inquest attended.
SWANTON George - 1881 - 20/09/1881 – Age 24 – Miner. Mosley Common No.2, Bridgewater Trust, Tyldesley, Lancashire. They apparently jumped on and overbalanced the tubs, when in motion in a gig brow. 2 killed.
SWANTON John - 1889 - 30/11/1889 – Age 57 – Hewer. West Sleekburn, Bedlington Coal Co., West Sleekburn, Northumberland. Fall of coal.
SWEENEY James (injured) - 1884 - 15/04/1884 – Age 26 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal he was taking down.
SWEENEY John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 31/08/1889 – Brusher. Braidhurst No.2, Summerlee Iron Co., Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Premature ignition of shot.
SWEENEY John P. - 1884 - 08/06/1884 – Age 8 – Child. Royal Victoria Coal and Fireclay Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. The two deceased, with other children, were playing about the top of a small pit, which was covered with planks, when by some unexplained means the planks were removed and the lads fell down. 2 killed.
SWEENEY Patrick (non-fatal) - 1887 - 22/03/1887 – Miner. Victoria, Eglinton Iron Co., Nitshill, Lanarkshire. Explosion of powder by spark of his lamp.
SWEENEY Patrick - 1887 - 21/06/1887 – Age 60 – Banksman. Dunreen Bay (metalliferous), Cameron Swan and Co., Co. Cork, Ireland. Fatal by falling into the shaft when greasing the rope. Having removed the fence rail in order to reach the rope he fell over a diagonal bar which formed a partial fence and after sliding down the rope he came in contact with the bucket. Died August 14th. No inquest held, the case not having been reported to the coroner.
SWEET Charles - 1889 - 09/12/1889 – Age 83 – Weighman. Griffin, John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. On his way home from work when dark he was run over by an engine belonging to a neighbouring iron works was shunting for their convenience on the colliery branch line, he mistook the line upon which they were being shunted and stepped in front of them.
SWEET Ezekiel (injured) - 1889 - 06/03/1889 – Age 20 – Miner. Phoenix United (metalliferous), Liskeard, Cornwall. Engaged in driving air end at the adit level from one part of the mine to the other, they unexpectedly cut an old shaft from which there was an inrush of water, carrying them out some distance through the level. Fortunately there was not a large quantity of water in the shaft. Had there been the men must have lost their lives. This accident was not reported to me, and it was only by attending an inquiry into a subsequent accident at which the evidence of Sweet and Carveth was required but were in consequence of their injuries were unable to be present that I learnt of the occurrence. I instituted legal proceedings against the mine on account of the omission the result of which was that the result of which the agent was fined. 2 injured.

SWIFT Henry - 1887 - 18/10/1887 – Age 28 – Loader. Linby, Linby Colliery Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof.
SWIFT J. - 1886 - /05/1886 – Age 52 – Collier. Hemingford, Earl Fitzwilliam, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.
SWIFT John (injured) - 1885 - 13/10/1885 – Age 17 – Gigger. Junction, Mountain Mine Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured slightly while riding down a steep engine brow. A flat stone from slips in the roof dropped on the rails and slid down after them and coming in contact with the train two of the tubs became uncoupled and ran down 40 or 50 yards to the bottom. Datallers or daymen had been working in this part of the brow during the night and left it as they and the fireman considered in good order. 5 injured.
SWIFT John - 1889 - 09/07/1889 – Age 37 – Deputy. New Brancepeth, Owners of New Brancepeth Colliery, Brancepeth, Co. Durham. Shot long in going off; he thought the match had gone out and went back to it before the time prescribed by Special Rule when it exploded.
SWIFT Joseph - 1883 - 26/02/1883 – Age 59 – Labourer. Tankersley, Newton Chambers and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Crushed between waggon top and screen bearer.
SWIFT Richard - 1881 - 09/11/1881 – Age 46 – Collier. Carrs, Carrs Colliery Co. Ltd., Prescot, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He worked 6 feet under top coal without setting any props. The manager visited him two hours before the accident and told him to get the coals down. This he neglected to do and carried on working when they fell on him.
SWIFT T. - 1888 - 04/09/1888 – Age 36 – Hurrier. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
