SENNETT James - 1885 01/04/1885 – Age 30 - Mine agent. Bulthy (metalliferous). While greasing the cog wheels of a byrites mill he was caught by them and received fatal injuries.

SEPHTON Thomas - 1889 - 21/03/1889 – Age 16 – Waggoner. Bridgewater, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof in widening a tunnel to 22 feet in width to 8 feet in height. Inspection and inquest attended.

SEPTON James - 1881 - 30/09/1881 – Age 19 – Drawer. Bickershaw, Ackers Whitley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was assisting to build a pack when stone came away knocking out the supporting timber. The place was well propped, but there was no timber under the end of the stone in the goaf and it appeared to have overbalanced.

SETTLE John - 1882 - 30/08/1882 – Age 14 – Drawer. Woodshaw, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made. Deceased was returning from his work, and in getting over some empty tubs, which were in his way, he slipped and to save himself from falling caught hold of the tail rope, and his hand was drawn into the pulley. The injuries were slight, but lockjaw set in, and he died on the 18th September.

SETTLE Richard (injured) - 1880 - 02/10/1880 – Age 19 – Dayman. Bradley Fold, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. Flash of gas at his open light. It came out of a crack in a bay, No.1, Gingham Mine. He seems to have been a trespasser looking for a candle. Died, 27th November.

SEVERNS Samuel - 1882 - 15/05/1882 – Age 13 - Screen boy. Newstead, Newstead Colliery Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Fell from the screens on to the railway siding.

SEVILLE James - 1884 - 27/01/1884 – Age 49 – Ostler. Naval, Naval Steam Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed.

SEWARD William - 1886 - 02/01/1886 - Engine tenter. Duckworth Hall, Thomas Simpson & Company, Lancashire. Not comprised by the Act. Hanged himself in the engine house, he having first locked the door. Verdict of unsound mind.

SEWELL Bennett - 1882 - 30/11/1882 – Age 41 – Hewer. Sherburn, Earl of Durham, Durham, Co. Durham. Fall of roof while working in his board.

SEWELL Henry - 1884 - 09/12/1884 – Age 56 – Labourer. Lofthouse (ironstone), Pease and Partners Ltd., Loftus, Yorkshire. Broken leg by falling timber bogy. Died 26th.

SEWELL James (injured) - 1888 – 01/10/1888 – Age 32 – Miner. Bower Great, James William and Robert, Marland, Lancashire. Back hurt by roof from slips falling suddenly from between two pairs of couplings as he was filling a tub.

SEWELL Richard - 1887 – 17/03/1887 – Age 63 – Horsekeeper. Willington, Strakers and Love, Durham, Co. Durham. Was struck by an engine set in the pit, in May 1884 and is supposed to have died from the effects. No inquest held. Not comprised.

SEYMOUR D. - 1881 – 06/01/1881 – Age 35 – Collier. Tyning, Countess Waldegrave, Tyning, Somerset. Suffocated by gas. He was measuring up a road which had been abandoned near an old loose. It is supposed a squeeze had come on and some carbonic acid gas found its way, from the gob, through the cracks in the coal and suffocated him before he could be removed.

SEYMOUR Harry - 1889 – 11/07/1889 – Age 32 – Miner. Todmorden Moor, James Griffiths, Dearden, Lancashire. Fatally in roof falling from a slip in his place. Died 12th. Inquest attended.

SHAFTOE John - 1884 – 14/08/1884 – Age 57. Keeker Wardley, John Bowes and Partners, Wardley, Co. Durham. Fell into empty waggons.

SHAKELTON J. - 1884 – 07/10/1884 – Age 49 – Screener. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Crushed by waggon.

SHAKESPEARE John - 1882 – 12/07/1882 – Age 66 – Dataler. Birch Coppice, Morris and Shaw, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Piece of iron pyrites being thrown into a waggon caught him; mortification set in, and he died.

SHANKS David - 1886 – 27/01/1886 – Age 15 – Driver. Springbank, Springbank Coal Co., Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Fell in front of tubs. Died 11th. Feb.

SHARPE John - 1888 - 07/08/1888 – Age 51 – Collier. Stanton, Stanhope J and N Nadin and Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Injured his foot when turning a tub over. Died from mortification of the foot.

SHARPLES James (injured) - 1886 - 04/06/1886 – Age 14 - Pulley attender. Sovereign, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Lancashire. Injured against a crossbar supporting the roof as he was riding on a tub in an endless chain brow.

SHARPLES John - 1888 - 02/11/1888 – Age 20 – Miner. Chequerbent No.1 Three Quarters, Hulton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Roof falling where they were widening to form an endless rope road. 1 killed 1 injured.

SHARPLES John - 1888 - 31/07/1888 – Age 13 – Waggoner. Newton No.1, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatally hurt by an empty tub running on him as he was holding it at the top of a steep brow to allow another waggoner to pass along the level with his tub.

SHARPLES Robert - 1889 - 13/05/1889 – Age 27 – Dayman. Duxbury Park, Duxbury Park Colliery Co., Lancashire. Killed by roof falling after he and the fireman had drawn props. Inspection and inquest attended.

SHARPLES Samuel - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 34 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

SHARPLES Thomas - 1885 - 23/02/1885 – Age 34 – Daywageman. Spindlepoint, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof in Cannel Mine while drawing a chock between two pack walls 8 or 9 yards apart. The roof owing to the great thickness of the stone, 3 feet, sounded solid on being knocked before it fell and in falling it knocked out three props which deceased had set for his own safety while taking out the chock.

SHARRATT John - 1885 - 19/03/1885 – Age 25 – Holer. Bestwood, Bestwood Coal and Iron Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Fall of coals whilst holing.

SHARRETT Joseph (injured) - 1885 - 16/04/1885 – Age 34 – Collier. Ellerbeck, Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by a stone falling out from between two slips, in the roof near a fault, which he was stripping. The place was well propped.

SHARROCK Henry - 1886 - 02/08/1886 – Age 45 – Fireman. Eatock No.2, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Lancashire. Found drowned in the sump at bottom of shaft after making his morning's inspection of the mine. He, with help, had removed the cover from the sump on the Saturday for water to be wound and he was apparently giving the signal for help on the Monday to put it on again when he fell in. Verdict of accidental death.

SHAW A. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 13 - Door boy. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

SHAW Albert (injured) - 1886 - 16/02/1886 – Age 16 - Taker off. Victoria, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Leg caught by a coil of rope at a gin brow. Accidental.

SHAW David - 1888 - 20/01/1888 – Age 64 – Dataler. High Park, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof while repairing a roadway.

SHAW Enoch (injured) - 1885 – 27/05/1885 – Age 40 – Miner. Bower, James William and Robert Marland and Co., Lancashire. Leg broken by a piece of coal which burst off from the face of his 12 yard bay in consequence of a grump.

SHAW Frank - 1885 – 28/05/1885 – Age 48 – Collier. Birley, West Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Run over by a train of loaded tubs whilst travelling down an engine plane.

SHAW Frank - 1886 - 07/03/1886 – Age 47 - Dataler. Clay Cross No.3, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Fall of roof whilst repairing a roadway.

SHAW James - 1889 – 08/06/1889 – Age 43 – Miner. Habergam, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Injured by roof falling from a slip where they were pillaring. Shaw was told by the miner that it wanted a prop but he knocked at the roof and said ‘No’. Inspection and inquest attended. 1 killed 1 injured.

SHAW John - 1884 – 23/09/1884 – Age 36 – Miner. Montcliffe, Adam Mason and Son, Lancashire. Hand caught with boring rods in the mine. Died 9th Oct.

SHAW Nicholas - 1887 – 14/01/1887 – Age 18 – Trailer. No.2 Stank (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Stank, Lancashire. The deceased got on the cage at the 120 fathom level to ride to the 105 fathom level, it is supposed he got off at the 105 fathom level and lost his light, then the cage was signalled away and deceased must have stepped into the open side of the shaft as his body was found under the cage which had descended.

SHAW or SHORN James - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 49. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed. Wife and 6 children.

SHAW R. - 1885 – 14/09/1885 – Age 40 – Age Byeworkman. Car House, John Brown and Co. Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

SHAW R. - 1885 – 29/05/1885 – Age 53 – Collier. St. Johns, Locke and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

SHAW Richard - 1888 – 29/12/1888 – Age 14 – Drawer. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were bringing out a full tub when, on passing along a wide place in the main road, a large slab of rock fell on them. There was no timber set although the place was 16 feet wide and they had commenced to get a pillar alongside. 2 killed.

SHAW Thomas (non-fatal) - 1889 – 29/07/1889 – Age 30 – Oversman. Craigneuk, Owners of Chapelhall, Fife. Explosion of firedamp. 34 days off.

SHAW Thomas - 1881 – 14/11/1881 – Age 31 – Loader. Netherseal, Netherseal Colliery Co., Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Travelling down an incline and was run over by a tub that had broken away from the horse taking it up the incline.

SHAW Thomas - 1888 – 29/12/1888 – Age 17 – Drawer. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. SHAW Walter - 1883 – 08/12/1882 – Age 21 – Loader. Unstone, Unstone Coal and Coke Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Injured 24th Oct.

SHAW William (injured) - 1888 – 06/11/1888 – Age 19 – Dayman. Broomstair Great, Hyde and Haughton Colliery Co., Lancashire. Leg broken by a windless which was dragged out of place as he applied the brake suddenly when lowering a steep brow.

SHAW William (injured) - 1888 – 31/01/888 – Age 23 – Dayman. Black Mine, Ashton Moss Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Ankle broken by fall of stone from two slips in the roof in an air road undergoing repairs.

SHAW William - 1883 – 12/10/1883 – Age 54. Wharncliffe, Carlton, Barnsley, Yorkshire Explosion of gas. 20 killed.

SHAW William - 1885 – 07/05/1885 – Age 50 – Miner. Dalton (metalliferous), Askam and Mouzell Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Piece of ore fell from between timbers and striking him suddenly fell off and to the bottom of a slope rise about 30 feet.

SHAW William - 1888 – 03/12/1888 – Age 45 – Sinker. Sheeprakes (metalliferous), Sheeprakes Mining Co., Lindal in Furness, Lancashire. Fell down shaft. While putting up some boarding, to protect the workmen from the storm of wind and rain raging at the time, the wind caught a board, deceased was carrying, and knocked him down the shaft.

SHAWCROSS William J. - 1880 - 05/02/1880 – Age 25 – Miner. Ashton’s Field No.2, Bridgewater Trust, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Roof dirt falling from a slip. It knocked out his props. Trencherbone Mine.

SHEA Patrick - 1884 - 20/06/1884 – Age 45 – Pitheadman. Mauricewood (ironstone), Shotts Iron Co., Penicuik, Edinburgh. Crushed by haulage machinery on surface.

Slightly burned by a flash of firedamp at his candle at the face of his upbrow place a small quantity of gas having accumulated between his worked coal and the face. Inspection and inquiry.

A shackle pin had come out and the bar hook having been neglected by the rider 11 trams ran back a distance of 350 yards.

SHIMMIN Samuel - 1883 – 11/01/1883 – Age 28 – Miner. Townshead (metalliferous). He had to fire a hole, charged with tonite, and it is supposed after firing the snuff and going away that not hearing the fuse spit he returned to put up a new snuff when the hole exploded.

Thrown out of the cage while descending through its having caught on the catches at the surface and slipping therefrom with slack rope on it two other men who were with him in the cage escaped with slight injuries.

SHUCK Edward - 1887 - 05/05/1887 – Age 16 – Collier. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof. He and others were making a new parting when the roof suddenly fell. It was a rock roof strong and well timbered. The working of another seam, about 11 yards below, probably caused the place to move and caused the accident.

SIBBALD Henry - 1882 - 04/03/1882 – Age 58 – Bottomer. Kerse, Merry and Cunninghams, Patna, Ayrshire. Was caught by the cage when removing a piece of coal out of the cage seat.

SIBBERING James - 1883 - 17/09/1883 – Age 59 – Collier. Sutton Heath, James Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A heavy fall of rock roof over 100 tons in weight carrying a chock and several props before it was caused through a metal parting above the rock and a slip crossing in front. This fall could not have been foreseen.

SILCOCK Hugh (injured) - 1885 – 10/01/1885 – Age 17 – Drawer. Whitebirk, Over Darwin Industrial Co-operative Soc. Ltd., Lancashire. Slight explosion of firedamp, ignited while giving a light at a lamp station which was wrongly situated. Inadequate ventilation. Proceedings were instituted by Inspector. 3 injured.

SIMCOCK John - 1887 – 08/02/1887 – Age 63 – Sheave oiler. Eston (ironstone), Blocklow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. While repairing a sheave he was caught by the full set of tubs and run over on engine plane.

SIMM Abraham - 1885 – 13/10/1885 – Age 43 – Hooker on. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons., Lancashire. Fatal, at landing in engine brow, which dips about 1 in 3 and a half. The rope, three quarter inch in diameter, broke and he was caught by the tubs which ran back. A daily examination of the rope did not appear to have been made.

SIMMONDS Joseph Henry - 1884 - 04/12/1884 – Age 47 – Dataler. West Hallam, A and E Whitehouse, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Supposed to have lost his way in the dark and passing beyond a fence was found suffocated in an old roadway.
