STANFIELD Edward - 1886 - 06/03/1886 – Age 27 – Gangrider. Ince Hall, Ince Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was ordered not to ride on the gang as the road was low but he was found on the top of the first tub crushed against the roof and had apparently been riding on the rope.

STAPLETON Thomas Henry - 1888 - 30/04/1888 – Age 14 – Tindresser. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. The deceased and two other boys were waiting at the top of the of the man engine shaft for the men to come up to see if they could get a start to work underground. He (deceased) began to play about the man engine went down one step and on essaying to take the second missed his footing and fell. There is a proper house for the man engine but because the men were coming from work the door was open. The boy had no business at the place.

STEELE Thomas - 1883 - 24/04/1883 – Age 15 - Chain boy. Bent, Bent Colliery Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Crushed between the buffers of empty waggons, which were being shunted by locomotive.

STEEN Thomas - 1885 - 14/01/1885 – Age 48 – Collier. Broughton New, Thomas Clayton, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made. Deceased was working at the fan, of his wicket, when a thin piece of clod fell on him. He had previously tried to get the stone down but failing to do so went on with his work without first setting a prop as he should have done.

STEIN Robert (non-fatal) - 1885 - 27/08/1885 – Collier. Letterick, Letterick Coal Co., Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

STELFOX Ernest (injured) - 1889 - 25/09/1889 – Age 15 - Coal cleaner. Limehurst, Limehurst Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by a pick penetrating his body as he fell, in climbing on to the pit bank. Inspection and inquiry.

STELFOX Henry (injured) - 1887 - 07/02/1887 – Age 43 – Miner. Limehurst, Peacock Limehurst Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Thigh broken by fall of coal. The sprags had been drawn on a previous shift, the coal had not fallen and he resumed work resetting sprags, although a good supply of timber was near.

STENDALL Harold - 1886 - 17/06/1886 – Age 15 – Driver. Skegby, Skegby Colliery Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Killed by a runaway empty tub on an engine plane.

STENHOUSE Thomas - 1883 - 30/03/1883 – Age 27. Elgin, Fife. Suffocated by smoke.

STENHOUSE Thomas - 1884 - 30/03/1884 – Age 27 – Roadsman. Elgin, Thomas Spowart and Co., Dunfermline, Fife. Suffocated by smoke and fumes while trying to reach, by the return air course, the seat of a fire at an underground engine. 3 killed.

STENTON A. - 1889 - 01/02/1889 – Age 14 – Driver. Wombwell Main, Wombwell Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Run over by corves.

STEPHEN William - 1884 - 04/07/1884 – Age 34 – Miner. Walkinshaw (ironstone or fireclay), Walkinshaw Oil Co., Paisley, Renfrewshire. Fell down shaft by crane, on which he was being lowered, getting out of gear.

STEPHENS Aaron - 1883 - 09/01/1883 – Age 40 – Pikeman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Injured with three others by explosion of powder on January 6th. Was recklessly pouring loose powder from one canister to another with a lighted candle close by.

STEPHENS David - 1880 - 15/04/1880 – Age 43 – Collier. Oakwood, Governor and Co’s successors, Taibach, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

STEPHENS David - 1881 - 26/01/1881 – Age 42 – Fireman. Saints Cwmbach, Cwmbach Coal Co., Swansea, Glamorgan. Crushed between trams and roof.

STEPHENS Edward - 1880 - 22/06/1880 – Age 16 – Driver. Ormesby (Ironstone), Cargo Fleet Iron Co., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Coming down an incline the horse fell and threw him down under a set of full tubs.

STEPHENS George - 1885 - 09/11/1885 – Age 27 – Labourer. Cwmbran, Patent Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Injured by a fall of stone and died the 10th. He was wedging down some stone which was known to be sprung but it fell before he expected and injured him severely internally.

STEPHENS James (injured) - 1888 - 04/05/888 – Age 18 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. While walking through the 213 fathom level, in making haste to overtake his comrades without a light, he fell down and broke his arm.

STEPHENS John - 1889 - 07/11/1889 – Age 47 – Collier. Cae, Nevill Druce and Co., Llanelly, Camarthen. Thrown out of cage while ascending shaft.

STEPHENS Joseph (injured) - 1880 - 07/04/1880 – Age 25 – Waggoner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Hurt. His tub knocked out a prop and caused a stone to fall.

STEPHENS T. (injured) - 1883 - 01/05/1883 – Age 14 – Waggoner. Agecroft, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Tub on level.

STEPHENS Thomas (injured) - 1884 - 19/03/1884 – Age 38 – Miner. Central Foxdale (metalliferous). Explosion of gunpowder which was being inserted into a hole by a tin charger. No doubt a spark was struck by the charger. The accident blinded both his eyes. Unable to work owing to his blindness.

STEPHENS Thomas - 1882 - 23/11/1882 – Age 28 – Overman. Wieham (metalliferous), Wieham Mining Co., Cumberland. Fall of ore. 3 killed.

STEPHENS Thomas W. - 1888 - 05/07/1888 – Age 15 - Door boy. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Felt out of tram and was run over while driving a horse in the absence of the haulier.

STEPHENS William - 1886 - 31/07/1886 – Age 70 - Furnace tender. Kilgetty, Bonvilles Court Coal Co. Ltd., Stepaside Saundersfoot, Glamorgan. Caught by the cage when entering after signalling it away. He was brought to the surface suspended by the deck between the shoe and guide rod one leg resting in the cage.

STEPHENS William jnr. (injured) - 1881 - 17/05/1881 – Age 28 – Miner. Port Nigel near Pwllheli. Fall of part of hanging wall of his stopes. Leg broken. 24 weeks off work.

STEPHENSON Andrew - 1888 - 26/01/1888 – Age 26 – Shifter. West Sleekburn, Bedlington Coal Co., West Sleekburn, Northumberland. Large stone, on side of gateway, came over on him whilst receiving instructions from chargeman who was about to place timber to secure it.

STEPHENSON George - 1886 - 28/09/1886 – Age 32 – Stower. Cramlington, Cramlington Coal Co., Cramlington, Northumberland. Fall of stone. 2 killed.

STEPHENSON Henry - 1882 - 16/11/1882 – Age 32 – Hewer. Beechburn, Joseph Fryer, Crook, Co. Durham. Severe sprain while lifting a tub. Died from strangulation of bowels in consequence.

STEPHENSON John - 1884 - 24/04/1884 – Age 52 – Deputy. North Beechburn, North Beechburn Coal Co., Crook, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while drawing timber in a broken jud.

STEPHENSON Joseph - 1888 - 07/11/1888 – Age 14 – Driver. Minton, South Hetton Coal Co Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Head crushed between tub and a balk of wood, he had either lost his light or the pony started off too soon.

STEPHENSON Moses (injured) - 1887 - 05/08/1887 – Age 47 – Contractor. Bridgewater No.1, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Faces and arms burned by compressed or bobbin powder exploding when being slightly forced by a wooden stemmer into a mis-shaped hole. 2 injured.

STEPHENSON R. (injured) - 1883 - 19/03/1883 – Miner. Arley Main, Arley Main Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fall of coal.

STEPHENSON Robert - 1888 - 14/12/1888 – Age 65 – Onsetter. Grossmont (ironstone), C and T Bagnall, Grossmont, Yorkshire. Crushed between tub and a prop, near to shaft bottom, he was caught while crossing the way in front of a putter.

STEPHENSON Thomas - 1882 - 07/03/1881 – Age 46 – Hewer. Bedlington, Bedlington Coal Co., Bedlington, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof.

STEPHENSON Thomas - 1883 - 20/06/1883 – Age 43 – Shunter. Snowden-Farnley, Farnley Iron Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Run over by waggons.

STEPHENSON William - 1880 - 10/04/1880 – Age 15 – Driver. Woodfield, Bolckow Vaughan and Co., Crook, Co. Durham. While riding inbye on limbers, the cotter slipped out, the limbers came off and he fell before the set of tubs, was run over and killed.

STEPHENSON William - 1880 - 15/10/1880 – Age 52 - Deputy. Wardley, John Bowes and Partners, Wardley, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

STEVEN Adam - 1882 - 22/08/1882 – Age 56 – Collier. Netherhouse, John Young and Sons, Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

STEVEN John - 1882 - 25/08/1882 – Age 18 – Miner. Broxburn Hayscraig (shale), Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Uphall, Linlithgow Explosion of firedamp. Danks and Neil, without thought, went with naked lights into a place which they knew was unventilated. They all lived more than a week after the accident and could explain how it happened. 4 killed.

STEVENS Frederick (injured) - 1889 - 05/03/1889 – Age 22 – Miner. North Tankersley (metalliferous), Scorrier, Cornwall. The man was engaged in the shaft filling the kibble and as the kibble filled with stuff was being drawn to the surface, Stevens having failed to take shelter under a penthouse which had been erected for his protection was struck on the head by a stone, but his injuries were not serious.

STEVENS John - 1881 - 18/01/1881 – Age 47 – Onsetter. Lingdale (ironstone), JW Pease and Partners, Saltburn, Yorkshire. Crushed by descending cage while taking ice off pit bottom, he had apparently acted contrary to arrangement between himself, the banksman and brakesman, not to commence until getting a signal from them that all was clear at bank.

STEVENS John - 1887 - 06/08/1887 – Age 21 – Haulier. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. A piece of coal falling from the surface rebounded from the shaft side and struck him near the pit eye, at the bottom.

STEVENS Richard Henry - 1882 - 15/02/1882 – Age 23 – Miner. Colden Dagger (metalliferous), Moses Bawen Manaton, Dartmoor, Devon. Was charging a hole with powder and used an iron tamping bar for ramming down the first layer of tamping, although cautioned by his comrade not to do so the result was an explosion which caused his death.

STEVENS Thomas - 1887 - 03/08/1887 – Age 28 – Banksman. No.1 Ferndale, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. He and another were putting in the empty tram 1 and before they got the second tram scotched the cage was lifted, the fans drawn back, and the cage began to descend drawing them both in. One of the men dropped into the space where the fans work and escaped with little injury but the other fell to the bottom depth of 287 yards.

STEVENSON Alexander (non-fatal) - 1884 - 12/04/1884 – Miner. Bowhill No.2, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

STEVENSON Arthur - 1886 - 21/09/1886 - Age 37 - Collier. Holbrook, J and G Wells Ltd., Eckington, Derbyshire. Taking out holing sprags when the coals fell upon him.

STEVENSON Charles - 1881 - 26/08/1881 – Age 14 – Collier. East Plean, Paterson and Thompson, Bannockburn, Stirling. Fall of roof.

STEVENSON Charles - 1888 - 01/10/1888 – Age 33 – Dayman. Holbrook, J and G Wells, Eckington, Leicester. Fall of roof while building a gate end pack.

STEVENSON David - 1881 - 06/10/1881 – Age 36 – Collier. Bank, Bank Coal Co., Cumnock, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal. Injured 30th Sept.

STOCK Edward - 1882 - 15/08/1882 – Age 18 – Gangrider. Gidlow & Swinley, Rylands Sons and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was bringing out the gang, and by some unexplained means fell under the tubs and was run over by them.

STOCKLEY Thomas - 1883 - 07/12/1883 – Age 53 – Collier. Moss Pemberton, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was holing without setting sprags and the coal came down on him. He brought about his own death by a direct breach of the Special Rules of the Colliery by which an accident reflects to some extent on the management of the colliery as it points to want of discipline in not compelling attention to the rules.

STODDART Henry (injured) - 1881 - 16/05/1881 – Age 53 - Tan-y-bwlch (metalliferous), Pwllheli. Explosion of a charge of potentite and dynamite, which had previously missed fire, while illegally bearing out the stemming or tamping. 2 injured. 3 months off.

STODDART Henry - 1889 - 27/02/1889 – Age 61 – Miner. Pantgwyn (metalliferous). While ascending the shaft in the skip in contravention of well-known regulations he endeavouring to get off while the skip was nearing the top and going slowly. He was caught against a piece of timber and severely crushed. His partner, who was in the skip with him, and they ventured to break the rule because they knew the manager was away that day. Both men had been warned while underground that they were disobeying orders and both had been advised to get out of the skip and ascend the usual way by ladders, a distance of about 60 fathoms.

Deceased and some other men were taking out some bars in the main engine road. He was knocking out a bar, with a long prop, when the bars fell over and sideways and struck deceased, who was eight feet away.

STOREY William - 1888 - 11/02/1888 – Age 45 – Blacksmith. Bold Collins, Green Colliery Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was helping to put a new cage on and was standing near the pit mouth which was well lighted, when he was asked for some shackles. He stepped forward, apparently without thinking, and fell into the pit.

STRANGE Samuel (survivor) - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 50 – Ostler. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.

STRATHAM John - 1883 - 29/10/1883 – Age 18 – Tributer. Botallock (metalliferous), Botallock Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Some old deads were being removed by deceased and his comrades. The skip for drawing the stuff was let down on a bottom or gate, put across the shaft about 25 fathoms from the surface. The gate was supported by the dividings, and was put in by William Newton, an old and experienced tributer, who afterwards himself filled and sent to the surface several skips. Deceased relieved him, and appears to have been filling the skip with one foot skip. Whilst doing so one of the pieces of timber supporting the skip gave way, and, there being slack chain the skip came down with a jerk, broke the chain, and fell in the shaft, carrying deceased with it to the 50 fathoms level.
