JACKS John - 1880 - 18/02/1880 – Age 13 – Waggoner. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Hurt by dirt falling from between the props and a pack where he was filling coal. Crumbouke Mine. Died Feb.13th.

JACKSON A. - 1881 - 16/01/1881 – Age 16 - ‘Drug’ driver. Woodthorpe, Nunnery Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fell in front of dug waggon. Accident 6th Dec 1880. Died this day.

JACKSON A. - 1887 - 04/06/1887 – Age 25 – Hurrier. Allerton, T and RW Bowen, Leeds, Yorkshire. Crushed by a bar when riding on corves. Died 6th June.

JACKSON George - 1884 - 28/10/1884 – Age 13 – Collier. Ty Trist, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. Fall of coal. A slip came in behind the coal, and it fell without giving any warning or showing signs of danger previously.

JACKSON Jacob - 1885 - 23/07/1885 – Age 49 – Enginewright. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Injured and fell whilst at work in the pumping shaft.

JACKSON James - 1881 - 23/09/1881 – Age 18 – Driver. Cannock & Leacroft, Cannock & Leacroft Colliery Co., Cannock, Staffordshire. Fell down an underground shaft. Deceased without waiting for instructions, placed himself in the loop of the windlass rope which immediately snapped and precipitated him to the bottom.

JACKSON James - 1884 - 26/02/1884 – Age 27 – Collier. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The stop block had got broken an hour before the accident, and they were relying on scotches to keep the tubs standing on an inclined road till they were hung on to the endless rope, but the rope sliding over them started them off in spite of the scotches and they ran down brow and struck deceased who was bringing another tub on to the brow.

JACKSON James - 1886 - 13/07/1886 – Age 30 – Miner. Old Meadows, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Fatal, apparently fell off his riding tram into water at the side of the road as he was going in to work.

JACKSON John (injured) - 1883 - 24/02/1883 – Brusher. West Hakhill, Ferrier and Strain, Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

JACKSON John (injured) - 1885 - 01/10/1884 – Age 27 – Miner. Scout Moor, Executors of Lawrence Duckworth, Lancashire. Thigh injured by a piece of shale from between the coal and rock roof it fell from two slips and was about 14 inches thick in the centre tapering off to feather edges. The coal was only 18 inches thick.

JACKSON John - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 61 – Shifter. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

JACKSON John - 1883 - 09/11/1883 – Age 58 – Hewer. Ellenborough, Maryport, Haematite Iron Co., Ellenborough, Cumberland. Fall of stone.

JACKSON John - 1883 - 18/08/1883 – Age 55 – Platelayer. Barrow, Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Run over by loco.

JACKSON John - 1886 - 04/08/1886 – Age 20 - Gang rider. Wet Earth, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co., Lancashire. Foot run over by waggons necessitating amputation. Died August 20th. He had just coupled the rope to the train when the engine started, causing the waggons to come upon him unprepared. Meddlesomeness of boy in signalling for which he was censured at the inquest.

JACKSON John - 1887 - 02/10/1887 – Age 38 – Miner. B. 30 (metalliferous), Harrison Ainsley and Co., Lindal in Furness, Lancashire. After firing two shots in their working places deceased and his mate had their breakfast. On returning to the working a short time afterwards deceased's mate heard the timber crack and shouted to him to come out of his place a short time until it settled Jackson replied it was all right. Immediately the whole place collapsed burying deceased.

JACKSON John - 1888 - 10/12/1888 – Age 23 – Miner. Pend-and-drea (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. On the Saturday afternoon previously deceased and his comrade had blasted two holes one of which did not break well. On the following Monday they started to bore within about 6 inches of the hole and after boring about 5 inches an explosion took place shattering Jackson's arm from which he subsequently died and giving a severe shock to his comrade. There had been a similar accident to this the only difference was that no cap or cartridge was exploded in the old hole which should have been done as provided for in the rules.

JACKSON Joseph (injured) - 1886 - 22/09/1886 – Age 14 - Engine tenter. Tong End Pasture (stone), Henry Heyes and Co., Lancashire. Injured. Having on a man’s jacket, much worn, it caught the flywheel shaft and he was thrown down. It caught at a bolt head which it was decided to substitute by using a screw. The engine was very small and wound no men.

JACKSON Joseph - 1880 - 30/12/1880 – Age 36 – Stoneman. Trudhoe Grange, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while taking down top caught in a flat.

JACKSON Joseph - 1885 - 02/08/1885 – Age 62 – Signalman. Eppleton, Hetton Coal Co., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Fell from Main Coal to Hutton Seam, a distance of 70 yards. He signalled himself away instead of waiting until his mate came and stepped past the cage.

JACKSON Richard - 1888 - 19/04/1888 – Age 27 – Shiftman. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery and Brick Co., St. Helens, Cumberland. Explosion of gas. 35 killed.

JACKSON Robert - 1885 - 26/08/1885 – Age 19 – Putter. Haswell, Haswell Shotton and Easington Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Head crushed between tub and side of way while coming out-bye.

JACKSON Samuel (injured) - 1886 - 03/08/1886 – Age 27 – Miner. Brackley No.1, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Injured by dirt from between two slips which rolled over a sprag he was holding. Accidental.

JACKSON W.H. - 1881 - 14/01/1881 – Age 21 – Sinker. Old End, S Groucutt and Sons, Bilston, Staffordshire. Whilst lowering one of the iron wire guides, it slipped through the clamp, fell down the shaft, and killed him.

JACKSON William Henry (injured) - 1889 - 14/08/1889 – Age 47 – Miner. Nook, Royley Broad Oak Colliery Co., Lancashire. Back hurt whilst riding up the engine brow he raised his head too high and got turned off the tram. Inspection and inquiry.

JACKSON Zacharius (injured) - 1880 - 11/08/1880 – Age 23 – Miner. Foulclough, Reuben Haigh and Co., Walsden, Lancashire. Leg broken. Stone falling from roof at a feather edge.

JACOB William - 1885 - 01/12/1885 – Age 27 - Surface rider. Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Co., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fell under railway trucks.

JACOBS Benjamin - 1889 - 28/01/1889 – Age 25 – Collier. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co. (Henry Bennett), Bedminster, Somerset. An explosion of firedamp through the use of naked lights. The three men died within 21 hours from the effects of burns. The lad Roberts was found insensible in the horse road several hundred yards away suffering from the effects of afterdamp from which he died some days after without regaining consciousness. 3 killed.

JACOBS Edward - 1886 - 18/02/1886 – Age 28 – Collier. National, National Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof killed both men while ripping a strong clift. 2 killed.

JACQUES James - 1885 - 15/12/1885 – Age 47 – Deputy. Shildon Lodge, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Fall of a large stone while drawing out a jud.

JACQUES John - 1880 - 13/01/1880 – Age 12 – Driver. Hamsterley, HW Watson, Hamsterley, Co. Durham. Crushed by tubs on Rolleyway.

JACQUES John - 1884 - 08/01/1884 – Age 26 – Fireman. Craghead, Hedley Bros., Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Fell into sump and was drowned while changing cage chains and putting on a lengthener at pit bottom.

JAFFREY Hosea - 1885 - 23/03/1885 – Age 41 – Hewer. Shildon, Shildon Coal Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from a slip turning away jud.

JAGGAR A. - 1884 - 19/08/1884 – Miner. Stone Chair (metalliferous), J and J Haley, Halifax, Yorkshire. Went back too soon after firing a shot and was struck by a stone. Died 31st Dec.

JAGGAR W. - 1881 - 14/01/1881 – Age 44 – Sinker. Shuttle Eye, Lockwood and Stockwell, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of stay in shaft.

JAGGER John (injured) - 1888 - 18/12/1888 – Age 29 – Miner. Jubilee, Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd. Lancashire. Mills ear singed, Buckley burned slightly, Jagger and Whatmough burned seriously by explosion of firedamp. Candles were ordinarily used in the mine but the fireman and the two miners who were using a safety lamp whilst making an opening into an old working liberated some firedamp and it lighted at the under manager's candle, 42 yards off as he was walking along the road the flame following the train to the opening. 4 injured.

JAMES Albert - 1887 - 29/07/1887 – Age 19 – Putter. Herrington, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Killed on engine plane. A coupling chain broke and the set ran back meeting the two boys who were riding outbye on their ponies. 2 killed.

JAMES Alfred - 1889 - 26/07/1889 – Age 15 - Errand boy. Hamstead, Hamstead Colliery Co., Great Barr, Staffordshire. Drowned in canal basin.

JAMES Benjamin - 1882 - 11/02/1882 – Age 66 – Labourer. Lewis Merthyr, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by an explosion of firedamp. 4 killed.

JAMES Booth (injured) - 1884 - 03/10/1884 – Age 33 – Miner. Hewlett, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken fall of roof.

JAMES Butterworth (injured) - 1880 - 14/06/1880 – Age 48 – Dayman. Hagside, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Gas suddenly appeared for the first time when they were using candles building pack wall. 4 injured.

JAMES Charles (injured) - 1888 - 02/11/1888 – Age 19 – Miner. Wheal Kitty (metalliferous), St. Agnes, Cornwall. Engaged in boring underground and by the collision of his comrade's hammer with his own was struck on the head. Injured, but not seriously.

JAMES D. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 39 - Bottom cutter. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

JAMES D.H. - 1888 - 25/06/1888 – Age 45 – Collier. Seven Sisters, Evans and Bevan, Neath, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp.

JAMES Daniel - 1881 - 22/11/1881 – Age 24 – Haulier. Aberdare Merthyr, Aberdare Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Hirwain, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

JAMES David - 1880 - 19/06/1880 – Age 64 – Labourer. Penydarren No.2, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Scalded by tapping plug being blown out.

JAMES David John - 1886 - 25/11/1886 – Age 12 - Collier boy, George Powell, Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Run over by trucks on the surface incline while walking tip it.

JAMES David Martin - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 20 – Rider. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

JAMES Edwin (injured) - 1889 - 24/08/1889 – Age 27 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Engaged at the adit of new sump shaft in changing the bearings of a balance bob the hydraulic by which the bearings were being lifted slipped and bruised the man's legs.

JAMES Evan - 1884 - 13/12/1884 – Age 36 – Sinker. Harris’ Navigation, Harris’ Navigation Coal Co., Treharris, Glamorgan. Killed in shaft 4 killed.

JAMES Evan - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 21 – Collier. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

JAMES Frances - 1880 - 22/09/1880 – Collier. Pillowell, G Atkinson, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fall of coal.

JAMES George - 1887 - 27/06/1887 – Age 19 – Haulier. South Wales, South Wales Colliery Co Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. Fall of top. He was working at night taking coal and rubbish from men in a narrow heading. A stone having greasy joints on both sides fell breaking off against the rib right and left.

JAMES Gilbert John - 1883 - 23/02/1883 – Age 14 - Wood trapper. Langley Park, John James, Wood Witton, Co. Durham. Crushed by a tub running amain.

JAMES Gomer - 1889 - 02/04/1889 – Age 22 – Collier. Ocean Dare, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face from a slip which had just been relieved. Deceased's father was busy preparing a prop to put under the stone it having been noticed to be heavy. Long wall.

JAMES Herbert - 1882 - 30/10/1882 – Age 13 - Collier’s boy. Seven Sisters, Evans and Bevan, Neath, Glamorgan. Killed by an explosion of firedamp.

JAMES J. - 1885 - 19/08/1885 – Age 36 – Collier. Corton Wood, Corton Wood Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

JAMES J.B. - 1883 - 03/01/1883 – Age 61 - Fettler. Lightmoor, H Crawshay and Sons, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. When riding in a cart over a parting it came in contact with another cart and he was thrown out on to his head. He continued working for a day or two but died on 21st. of compression of the brain.

JAMES James Bettany - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 23 – Loader. Mossfields, Hawley and Bridgwood Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Explosion 64 killed.

JAMES John (injured) - 1881 - 02/12/1881 – Age 55 – Miner. Bryn Dyfi, Glandovey. Fall of tide in some stopes soon after blasting, Legs bruised. 21 weeks off.

JAMES John (injured) - 1888 - 14/04/1888 – Age 16 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. While proceeding underground by means of the man engine, he fell and injured his head. He had been accustomed to going underground some months and the man-engine was in good condition.

JAMES John - 1880 - 04/02/1880 – Age 55 – Miner. Penhalls (metalliferous), Penhalls Mining Co., St. Agnes, Cornwall. Fall of ground while working under a rock which he had sounded and knew to be weak.

JAMES John - 1880 - 04/03/1880 – Age 28 – Rider. Cwm, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Run over by loaded trams on engine drift.

JAMES John - 1880 - 13/12/1880 – Age 25 – Timberman. Griffin, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone. Deceased was clearing a fall where the top was known to be dangerous but he tried it and thought it would stand.

JAMES John - 1880 - 15/01/1880 – Age 26 – Hitcher. Maindy, D Davies and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fell down shaft.

JAMES John - 1880 - 21/01/1880 - Taker-off. Leycett Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

JAMES John - 1880 - 26/11/1880 – Miner. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Outwood, Lancashire. Leg splintered. Coal falling as he was about to wedge it down. Two Yards Mine.

JAMES John - 1882 - 14/11/1882 – Age 31 – Stower. Lower Duffryn, Powells Duffryn Co., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

JAMES John - 1882 - 27/02/1882 – Age 49 – Repairer. Henwain, J Lancaster and Co., Henwain, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. 5 killed.

JAMES John - 1884 - 16/01/1884 – Age 21 – Collier. Garnant, Garnant Collieries Co., Cwmaman, Glamorgan. Breakage of rope. 10 killed.

JAMES John - 1886 - 14/12/1886 – Age 50 - Skip filler. Pedn-an-drea (metalliferous), Pedn-an-drea Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Cause of death unknown; was found dead in shall a few feet below the plat at which he had been filling.

JAMES John - 1887 - 13/10/1887 – Age 61 - Horse shoer. Finery Slant, Cwmavon Works Proprietors, Cwmavon, Glamorgan. He was riding between the loaded tram, up an incline dipping 1 in 14 when a link of the short chain at end of rope broke and failing to get off he was carried down the incline. He died two days afterwards.

JAMES John - 1887 - 19/08/1887 – Age 55 – Repairer. Avan, Sir Daniel Gooch and others, Abergwynfi, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at entrance to stall off heading while clearing away some stone which had fallen a few minutes before. The stone (5 feet long x 2 feet wide) fell out between two slips and close to the corner cog. Long wall.

JAMES John - 1889 - 05/06/1889 – Age 21 – Haulier. Tylor’s, A Taylor and Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Run over by full journey on which he was riding up engine plane. It was the last journey and deceased had left his horse inbye.

JAMES John - 1889 - 07/01/1889 – Age 41 – Miner. Callington United (metalliferous), Callington, Cornwall. Deceased and his comrade, John Folley, were going underground to see that everything was right in the shaft. When at the 30 fathom level Folley handed a plank to deceased who was standing on another plank in the shaft and the latter while in the act of taking it was apparently seized with giddiness and fell a distance of 10 fathoms. He was dead when his comrade reached him.

JAMES Josiah - 1888 - 15/03/1888 – Age 65 – Miner. New Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. The deceased was on his way up from underground in company with others. When they reached the 115 fathom level part of the ladder fell away with the man in front of him knocking James into the shaft down which he fell 10 fathoms. The ladder to all appearance was quite sound but it broke at the cleats and was caused by the nails drawing through the cleats the cheek of the ladder being quite rotten in the inside which could not however be easily discovered.

JAMES Makins - 1886 - 17/12/1886 – Age 21 – Drawer. Ashtons Green, Bromilow Forster and Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was killed by a fall of roof (top wall) in the main road as he was going to his work. The place was examined an hour and a half previously and considered to be safe.

JAMES Norwood - 1888 - 25/05/1888 – Age 27 – Collier. Celynen, Newport and Abercarne Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of coal from the face from two unseen slips.

JAMESON Thomas - 1889 - 30/01/1889 – Age 47 – Labourer. Deep, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was lowering a waggon and apparently sitting on the brake when, on passing a waggon on the adjoining line, he was crushed. The latter waggon he had placed there himself. He had been engaged at this work for 15 years.

JARVIS John Henry - 1888 - 26/07/1888 – Age 46 – Contractor. Legh, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was driving a tunnel the roof of which was not good and he omitted to put up timber relying on plucking the loose stone down when a piece fell or him. There did not appear to have been a distinct misunderstanding between the manager and the contractor as to whose duty it was to timber.

JARVIS Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 20/01/1888 – Age 40 – Miner. Spindlepoint, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by roof falling between the bars. It came from a slip.

JARVIS Joseph - 1885 - 20/08/1885 – Age 50 – Collier. Leycett, Madeley Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Caught by piece of coal while riding.

JASAPER Henry - 1883 - 09/01/1883 – Age 51 – Bandsman. Oldnal, Fisher and Co., Lye, Staffordshire. Slipped into shaft in some unexplained way, having just helped two carpenters to land a hanging scaffold on which they had been working in the shaft.

JASPER William - 1884 - 27/06/1884 – Age 14 - Door boy. Cleynen Newport, Abercarne Black Vein Steam Coal Co., Monmouth. Contrary to orders, he was trying to couple two trams, and when they joined up he missed the hook and his head was crushed between them.

JAY Edward - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 44 – Labourer. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

JEAVONS Timothy - 1889 - 12/12/1889 – Age 60 – Labourer. Crowsbridge, Welling and Timmins, Bilston, Staffordshire. Killed by fall of three legged pit frame.

JEFFERIES Albert John - 1886 - 17/02/1886 – Age 20 - Clay miner. Grange (metalliferous), Messrs Pike, Wareham, Dorset. Was replacing some of the sets of timber in a level when a crush took place and he received injuries from a piece of timber which caused his death.

JEFFERIES Henry - 1889 - 24/08/1889 – Age 49 – Labourer. Old Field Lane End, Wors Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Crushed between trucks on colliery sidings.

JEFFERSON George - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 14. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Brother of William. Buried in Trimdon Cemetery.

JEFFERSON R. - 1883 - 28/12/1883 – Age 65 – Labourer. Flatts Hird, Dawson and Hardy, Bradford, Yorkshire. Fell off pit hill.

JEFFERSON Richard - 1888 - 16/02/1888 – Age 24 – Hewer. Broomside, Broomside Coal Co., Durham, Co. Durham. Was caught by the engine set when going inbye to his work and run over. A refuge hole was close to.

JEFFERSON Stephen - 1884 - 10/03/1884 – Age 40 - Horse driver. Adelaide’s, Peases and Partners Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Severe injuries to leg by being knocked down and ran over by a truck on the branches. Died on 13th July.

JEFFERSON Thomas - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 55 – Tudhoe. Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed. Married.

JEFFERSON William - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 18. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Brother of George. Buried in Trimdon Cemetery.

JEFFERY Joseph - 1882 – 27/06/1882 – Age 15 – Trammer. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Cocking and Paull together with a miner called Trengove, were driving with a boring machine, the 250-fathoms level west of Podler’s engine shaft, two brothers named Jeffery being engaged in ramming the lode stuff broken. From 18 to 20 holes each, 8 feet in depth, had been bored in the end. At the time of the accident two rounds of holes had been blasted, and Tengove, the head man of the core, was at the dynamite locker, about 70 fathoms from the end, preparing the charges for the next and last blast; with him were Paull and Cocking, whilst the two brothers Jeffery were sitting down about 2 fathoms off eating their lunch. Cocking, who was assisting in preparing the charges, stuck his lighted candle on the side of the level directly over the dynamite locker, from which he took a candle to cut up into snuffs. He then proceeded to take his lighted candle but in doing so let it fall on the dynamite locker which contained, in addition two packets of dynamite, a box of detonators, some fuses, and candles. In a moment the contents of the locker caught fire and the dynamite exploded, killing Cocking and Joseph Jeffery, Paull receiving injuries from which he shortly afterwards died, Trengove and William Jeffery escaping in a miraculous manner.

JEFFREY Thomas - 1884 – 26/07/1884 – Age 21 – Hewer. Newbottle Colliery, Dorothea Pit, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Crushed to death by stone falling out of goaf edge.

JEFFREY William (injured) - 1889 - 23/10/1889 – Age 16 – Labourer. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Was engaged in adjusting a stumps head. More slack rope was let out than was thought for and when the head was pinched into it's place the vibration of the winch threw the lad off the platform causing injuries to his head.

JEFFRIES Charles - 1885 - 29/06/1885 – Age 37 – Collier. California, Oldland Colliery Co. Ltd., Gloucestershire. A prop and a small quantity of shale fell on him and he died in Bristol Infirmary from a dislocated spine, 22nd July.

JEFFRIES Phillip - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 28 – Collier. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.

JEHU John (injured) - 1884 - 04/02/1884 – Age 52 – Platelayer. Van (metalliferous). Through his own inadvertence he was struck by a passing waggon of ore stuff. 6 weeks off.

JELLY George - 1887 - 19/04/1887 – Age 50 - Waggon greaser. Cinder, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. Crushed between railway waggons. He was last seen sitting in a cabin eating his dinner. Some waggons were gravitating down to the weighing machine and he got caught between the buffers. There was plenty of room on both sides of the rails.

JELLY William - 1882 - 21/01/1882 – Age 21 – Collier. Lower Deep, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone. When unloading timber, a piece struck a prop which was supporting some stone, and knocked it out.

JENKIN Emanuel - 1886 - 03/06/1886 – Age 40 – Lander. Polcrebo (metalliferous), Polcrebo Mining Co., Crowan, Cornwall. Was riding on the balance arm of a horse whim and driving the horse at a gallop when he got caught between the balance arm and one of the legs of span beam and was crushed to death.

JENKIN John (injured) - 1888 - 12/12/1888 – Age 24 – Miner. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. He slipped while helping to change some of the iron rods going from the waterwheel to the pumps and had a finger caught between the rod and the pulley. 4 weeks off.

JENKIN William (injured) - 1883 - 30/06/1883 – Age 26 – Miner. Mynach Vale (metalliferous). A chip of steel flew off the head of the borer when it was struck and went into his eye causing him to lose the sight of it. 6 weeks off.

JENKINS Alexander - 1884 - 03/10/1884 – Age 22 – Collier. Greenfield, Archibald Russell, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Fall of side removing stoops, head coal.

JENKINS Benjamin - 1880 - 24/02/1880 – Age 15 – Engineman. New Tredegar, Powells Duffryn Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. The engine was on the centre and he reached over to turn the fly wheel, without shutting off the steam, when the engine started he was dragged in and crushed.

JENKINS Benjamin - 1881 - 21/09/1881 – Age 21 – Collier. Sguborwen, Executors of late S Thomas, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

JENKINS David - 1887 - 18/11/1887 – Age 18 – Jigger. Park Slip, Llynfi and Tondu Co. Ltd., Tondu, Glamorgan. Run over by a tram which he was attempting to take down a short but steep incline.

JENKINS David - 1887 - 22/12/1887 – Age 34 – Collier. Finery Slant, Cwmavon Works, Proprietors Cwmavon, Glamorgan. Fall of roof. He was turning a stall to the rise off the heading where the clift 7ins. thick was already taken down, and although there was one prop stood under the overhanging Clift when 3ft. of it was undermined it fell.

JENKINS David - 1888 - 22/08/1888 – Age 20 – Shackler and signalman. Merthyr Vale, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. While attending at the bottom of an engine plane where there was a sharp curve round the outside of which the tail tope was carried by sheaves fixed in a strong wooden frames as a journey of empties was going up a sudden jerk of the rope broke two of the frame's, and the rope thus liberated, knocked him against the inside wall of curve.

JENKINS G. - 1881 - 25/04/1881 – Age 32 – Collier. Ebbw Vale No.22, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone. An unseen slip caused the accident.

JENKINS H. - 1883 - 18/09/1883 – Age 21 – Collier. Western Ocean, D Davies and Co., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

JENKINS Henry - 1884 - 15/03/1884 – Age 30 – Screenman. Gatewen, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. This was due entirely to carelessness. He was lowering empty waggons to the screens and just before they reached the loaded ones he endeavoured to pass between the two sets and was crushed.

JENKINS Isaac - 1888 - 20/08/1888 – Age 19 – Collier. Pochin, Tredegar iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof from slips. The place was not well propped considering the nature of the roof there. 2 killed.

JENKINS J. - 1881 - 13/05/1881 – Age 13 – Collier. Wain Level, Morgan, Morgan, Monmouth. Fall of coal.

JENKINS James - 1886 - 26/10/1886 – Age 45 – Collier. Light Moor, H Crawshay, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Injured by a horse and tram squeezing him against the side of the road. He died on the 28th.

JENKINS John - 1884 - 10/10/1884 – Age 32 – Collier. Yate, FH Jones, Gloucester. Fall of stone. He and others were repairing an incline, and a wedge shaped stone fell upon him. He died in about 16 hours from the injuries.

JENKINS John - 1885 - 07/08/1885 – Age 46 – Carpenter. Castle, Crawshay Bros., Cyfarthfa, Merthyr, Glamorgan. Scratched by wire rope.

JENKINS John - 1885 - 13/10/1885 – Age 45 – Repairer. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorganshire. Fall of side. He and his partner were repairing a road his partner knocked out some timber which, in addition to the top, caused a large fall of coal from a slip at the side which extended to where Jenkins was seven yards off and killed him.

JENKINS John - 1886 – 10/02/1886 – Age 60 – Collier. No.22, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Injured by a fall of coal and clod and died on the 16th. After trying to wedge down the coal he returned to work under it and it fell on him.

JENKINS Joseph - 1881 - 15/12/1881 – Age 45 – Brusher. Glentore No.6, Glentore Coal Co., New Monkland, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in a new road being made through waste long wall.

JENKINS Joseph - 1887 - 10/12/1887 – Age 58 – Collier. Waun, Hughes and Thomas, Loughor, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in a heading going through old workings. Stone 6 feet x 4 feet x 10 inches thick, which had no supports to it, fell out close to face.

JENKINS Mel. - 1889 - 11/04/1889 – Age 62 – Collier. Dowlais No. 7, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of cliff (6.5ft. x 2ft. x 6ins. thick) while holing in 3ft. below it and without having supported it. Seam 4 ft. 7 ins. thick. Pillar and Stall.

JENKINS Robert - 1885 - 13/07/1885 – Age 14 - Hutch runner. Glentore, Glentore Coal Co., Greengairs, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggons at screens.

JENKINS Samuel - 1889 - 16/08/1889 – Age 39 – Pitman. Penrikyber, Penrikyber, Navigation Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. While deceased and another man were pulling down a door frame set in brick work a full of roof occurred and injured them both. Deceased died 11th October. Six Feet seam in heading between the two shafts.

JENKINS T. - 1881 - 14/04/1881 – Age 62 – Timberman. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Co., Glamorgan. The tail rope of an underground hauling engine knocked out a prop and struck him on the head. He died on the 15th.

JENKINS Thomas (injured) - 1888 - 12/06/1888 – Age 35 – Miner. Lisburne (metalliferous). He was cutting a hitch for putting in timber to secure the roof of a level when some of it gave way and fell upon him. Knee bruised and toes crushed. Seven and a half weeks off.
