JONES John - 1888 - 26/03/1888 – Age 57 – Collier. Abercanaid, Plymouth Works Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (strong clod) about 5yds. from face in middle of road which had side props only. 5ft. 6ins seam.

JONES John - 1889 - 04/12/1889 – Age 62 – Collier. Seven Sisters, Evans and Bevan, Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff), 6.5ft. dia. 10 ins. thick tapered to a thin edge all round at face where there were no props set up. 4-ft. seam, 3ft. thick Pillar and stall.

JONES John - 1889 - 06/12/1889 – Age 46 – Collier. Shirland, Blackwell Colliery Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. In this case the deputy had a short time previously called the Stallman’s attention to the roof.

JONES John - 1889 - 08/04/1889 – Age 27 – Collier. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of a face slip of coal and clod while holing without sprags. Four Feet Seam, 5.5ft. thick. Long wall.

JONES John - 1889 - 09/07/1889 – Age 20 – Repairer. Cwmbran, Patent Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Cwmbran, Monmouth. An explosion of firedamp at a naked light which also caused injury to another man.

JONES John - 1889 - 20/05/1889 - 24 Age – Rider. Gelli, Steam Coal Gelli and Tynybedw Collieries Co. Ltd., Ystrad, Glamorgan. His head came in contact with framework of a tail-rope sheave at top of incline by which he had ridden on rope in front of journey. He had probably lost his footing in the act of jumping off.

JONES John David - 1882 - 09/01/1882 – Age 26 – Rockman. Oakley Middle (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He made a false step while working without a rope and rolled 40 feet down the face of his bargain. 8 weeks off.

JONES John Edward - 1881 - 19/12/1881 – Age 26 – Dataller. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 48 killed.

JONES John Francis - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 38. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Unmarried. Buried in Trimdon Cemetery.

JONES John Hughes (injured) - 1889 - 02/12/1889 – Age 32 – Quarryman. Oakeley (slate). Part of the thumb of right hand cut by knife of revolving slate dressing machine while he was dressing slate. 6 weeks off.

JONES John Owen (injured) - 1883 - 04/07/1883 – Age 19 – Fitter. Palmerston (slate). Had his middle finger of his right hand cut by the gearing of the lathe at which he was working. Six and a half weeks off.

JONES John Owen - 1883 - 03/01/1883 – Age 16 - Coal cleaner. Plas Power, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was lowering a truck down from the screens and stepped back on to the other line of rails to see whether it was far enough and he was knocked down by the loco passing at the time. The driver who was the father of the deceased, said that he whistled when about 30 yards away but the deceased stepped back just as the engine was passing. It is supposed that he did not hear the approach of the engine in consequence of the noise made by the coal falling into the waggons from the screens.

JONES John P. - 1889 - 15/03/1889 – Age 29 – Collier. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of a scale 5ft. square from rock roof between props about 6ft. apart. Seam 6ft thick "Nottingham" longwall.

JONES John R. - 1882 - 04/01/1882 – Age 13 – Doorboy. Maindy, D Davies and Co., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Killed by full trams passing over him.

JONES John Thomas (injured) - 1882 - 25/01/1882 – Age 17 - Slate dresser. Braichgoch (slate), Corris, Merioneth. Finger crushed in a slate dressing machine. 16 days off.

JONES John William (injured) - 1882 - 24/09/1882 – Age 35 – Quarryman. Oakley Middle (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. While reaching down to get an old sack, which was twisted round some shafting he got caught by the coupling gear of the dressing machine, and was twisted round. 18 days off.

JONES John William - 1889 - 02/09/1889 – Age 12 – Driver. Herrington, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Crushed between tub and side while attempting contrary to rules to get on to engine set while going round a curve.

JONES Jonathan - 1885 - 28/04/1885 – Age 52 – Collier. Hafod-y-bwch, Ruabon Coal Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting down coal when he bared a slip at the face and a heavy fall of roof occurred capping one or two props. He knew the stone was dangerous and had set extra props but they did not appear to have been sufficient to support the stone.

JONES Joseph - 1880 - 09/06/1880 – Age 25 - Pack builder. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof from between timber and chocks as he was building a pack.

JONES Joseph - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 30. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas, 101 killed.

JONES Joseph - 1881 - 08/03/1881 – Age 15 – Waggoner. Wynnstay, New British Iron Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was found lying in front of a loaded tub with his skull fractured supposed he had been bringing the tub down the road which slightly inclined, and catching his foot against a sleeper was thrown down, his head coming in contact with the rail.

JONES Joseph - 1884 - 12/01/1884 – Age 30 – Collier. Plas Power, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. These men, who were in charge of a fireman, were engaged at night to liberate some gas which had collected in consequence of a fall in the air road and for that purpose had driven a new road. When they cut through, they continued working in the gas, and were after a time overpowered. The fireman, although close at hand, appeared to have left the men entirely to their own devices and appeared throughout to have acted with the greatest carelessness.

JONES Joseph - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 40 - Stoneman attendant. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

JONES Joseph - 1886 - 24/03/1886 – Age 24 – Sinker. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. They were drilling in side of pit when a piece of fireclay, weighing two tons, fell on them. 2 killed.

JONES Joseph - 1889 - 12/10/1889 – Age 16 - Collier’s boy. Ynyshir, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in stall turning off heading which was double timbered and cogged. Roof fell from a slip parallel to rib and discharged two cogs and several pairs of timbers on private branch railway. Two feet Nine seam. Long wall. 3 killed.

JONES Joseph John - 1888 – Age 12 - Door boy. Lady Windsor, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Crushed between empty train and cog near face while the haulier and collier were changing trains. The date is uncertain but sometime in October.

JONES Joseph Lewis - 1884 - 14/05/1884 – Age 27 – Miner. Palmerston (slate). Morgans was using an iron bar to tamp a hole charged with gunpowder and guncotton when the charge exploded killing Jones and fracturing Morgan’s skull. 1 killed 1 injured. Morgan 2 months and 4 days off.

JONES Joshua - 1887 - 30/04/1887 – Age 68 – Lampman. South Wales, South Wales Colliery Co Ltd., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. Run over by trams. Coming out from work he met a journey of empty trams and was knocked down and run over. There was roof at the side, but he was deaf which may account for his not getting out of the way in time.

JONES Josiah - 1889 - 17/09/1889 – Age 39 – Stallman. Blackwell A, Blackwell Colliery Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of coals whilst holing; The deceased had neglected to set sufficient sprags although cautioned by his fellow workmen.

JONES L. - 1882 - 02/05/1882 - Age 16 – Hurrier. St. John’s, Locke and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

JONES Lewis (injured) - 1886 - 06/04/1886 – Age 35 – Miner. Oakeley Upper (slate). Lewis Jones was ramming a tamping with a wooden stick upon a charge of gelatine dynamite and guncotton when they exploded. Product of the tight fitting guncotton against the side of the hole or it may have been due to a blow cap. 2 injured. Jones 4 weeks off, Thomas 5 weeks off.

JONES Lewis (injured) - 1886 - 13/07/1886 – Age 35 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). Fell down the fore breast of his chamber while walking across the top of it. 2 weeks off.

JONES Lewis - 1880 - 05/04/1880 – Age 12 - Door boy. Cefn, Bryndu Coal Co., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Run over by trams through breakage of coupling chain.

JONES Llewellyn - 1880 - 23/02/1880 – Age 30 – Collier. West Brithdir, Dynevor Coal Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

JONES Llewellyn - 1884 - 06/05/1884 – Age 19 - Pony driver. Gatewen, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A small pot hole fell from between the bars which were set at intervals of 3 feet. The roof all round appeared to be perfectly sound and good.

JONES Lloyd - 1881 - 18/01/1881 – Age 33 – Collier. Bedwellty, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone. It fell without any warning, and had been sounded about three quarters of an hour previously. 2 killed.

JONES Mary - 1888 - 01/06/1888 – Age 15 - Coal washer. Sirhowy, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Sirhowy, Monmouth. Fell from the buffer of an empty railway waggon on which she intended riding to the loading place where she worked. Female.

JONES Morgan (injured) - 1881 - 03/10/1881 – Age 37 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate), Festiniog. Fearing some rock was about to fall, he jumped or slipped off his ladder, which was leaning against the face of the slate, and fell 15 feet, spraining his knee. Three and half weeks off.

JONES Morgan (injured) - 1881 - 04/02/1881 – Age 30 – Shaftsman. Pantanhirion (North Grogwinion, metalliferous), Devils Bridge. A windlass rope broke, though only three weeks in use, and the kibble fell, striking Jones on the shoulder. 9 days off.

JONES Morgan - 1880 - 09/08/1880 – Age 20 – Collier. Coedcae, Coedcae Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

JONES Morgan - 1880 - 09/08/1880 – Age 20 – Collier. Colly No.6 Level, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Killed by falling under full trams.

JONES Morgan - 1884 - 01/07/1884 – Age 54 – Roadman. Merthyr Vale, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Struck by rope.

JONES Morgan - 1887 - 15/11/1887 – Age 42 – Airwayman. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof and side on a double parting while deceased was passing in to his work. The road was 15ft. wide and 9ft. high and had been re timbered within two months.

JONES Morgan - 1888 - 19/07/1888 – Age 26 – Collier. Harris’s Navigation, Harris’s Navigation Coal Co. Ltd., Treharris, Glamorgan. While barring down a face slip of coal, part of it struck him on the leg. Mortification supervened and he died while his leg was being amputated on the 28th. 6ft seam. Long wall.

JONES Morris (injured) - 1883 - 30/01/1883 – Age 38 - Labourer. Oakeley Middle (slate). A small loose stone lying on a ledge of rock slipped off and fell upon him as he was stooping down to shovel rubbish. Head cut. 2 weeks off.

JONES Morris - 1886 - 04/11/1886 – Age 36 – Sinker. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. The side of the shaft, which was in course of sinking, gave way at unseen slips for a length of seven or eight yards from the bottom and thus undermined the last 10 yards of walling which being fresh and the mortar not yet set, fell in upon them. There were 19 or 20 men in the bottom at the time. 4 killed.

JONES Nathaniel - 1887 - 15/03/1887 – Age 28 – Dataller. Norton Cannock, Norton Cannock Colliery Co., Bloxwich, Staffordshire. Killed when drawing timber which caused a further fall of timber and roof upon him where he was standing in apparent safety.

JONES Oliver - 1884 - 27/01/1884 – Age 33 – Ostler. Naval, Naval Steam Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed.

JONES or JOYCE Henry - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 16. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery.

JONES or ROBERTS Edward - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 15. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1881 - 13/05/1881 – Age 31 – Quarryman. Oakeley Middle (slate), Festiniog. He was striking an iron peg for tightening the chain which held his blocks on to a sled when a small piece of iron flew off and struck one of his eyes. Nine and half weeks off.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1882 - 04/05/1882 – Age 17 – Quarryman. Oakley Middle (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He fell against a slate sawing table while in a fit. 12 days off.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1883 - 19/03/1883 – Age 41 – Labourer. Palmerston (slate). While lowering a block of slate with a crane, his arm slipped between the cog wheels and was bruised. 6 weeks off.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1884 - 24/09/1884 – Age 32 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate). The chain by which he supported himself while at work got loose from the fastening at the top of the bargain, and he fell. Back strained. Fourteen and half weeks off.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1884 - 31/03/1884 – Age 28 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). The chain by which he was supporting himself broke and he fell from the face of his bargain. Ankle severely sprained. 14 weeks off.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1885 - 24/04/1885 – Age 22 – Labourer. Moelwyn (slate). While loading blocks he let one drop on to his foot.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1888 - 23/11/1888 – Age 50 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). While he was working with a winch at the edge of a precipice the handle came off, he fell under the fence and rolled down to the next floor. 13 weeks off.

JONES Owen (injured) - 1889 - 01/03/1889 – Age 39 – Rockman. Bryneglwys (slate), A block of slate slung in a chain ready to be drawn out of a chamber slipped out and struck his foot. Twenty one and a half weeks off.

JONES Owen - 1881 - 10/05/1881 – Age 60 – Pitman. Mostyn, Mostyn Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Mostyn, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was examining the pit and was, it is supposed, leaning over the side of the descending cage in a moment of forgetfulness.

JONES Owen - 1885 - 17/02/1885 – Age 40 – Shaftman. Pantgwyn (metalliferous). Irruption of water from adjacent workings owing to an inaccuracy on the plan and section of the mine. 3 killed.

JONES Owen O. (injured) - 1889 - 27/05/1889 – Age 13 – Quarryman. Bryneglwys (slate). Wishing to move his sawing table a little he put his foot into the driving pulley instead of using the hand wheel. He slipped and his leg went through into the loose pulley which was revolving and was broken above the knee. Seven and a half months off.

JONES Owen P. - 1889 - 09/02/1889 – Age 45 - Miner agent. Oakeley (slate). Fell off a crane or triangle which he allowed to be used with one instead of two guy chains. He was carelessly standing between the legs of the crane.

JONES Owen R. (injured) - 1888 - 21/12/1888 – Age 28 – Rockman. Diphwys Casson (slate). Premature fall of a piece of rock which he was endeavouring to dislodge with a crowbar. Compound fracture of ankle. Still disabled March 1889.

JONES P. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 26 – Timberman. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

JONES Peter (injured) - 1883 11/09/1883 20 Engineman Ty’n-y-caeau (metalliferous). Had two fingers crushed in slide of air compressor while cleaning. 6 weeks off.

JONES Peter (injured) - 1888 - 17/05/1888 – Age 22 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). He had shifted one leg of a so-called crane or triangle in order to lead a truck more easily but this was noticed when the crane came to be used and it fell and struck him. 3 weeks off.

JONES Peter - 1881 - 14/08/1881 – Age 35 – Collier. Plas Power, Broughton & Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was engaged in enlarging an airway, and when in the act of pulling some loose coal from the side when a piece of clod fell on him. He should have set a prop under the clod before touching the coal.

JONES Phillip - 1886 - 26/05/1886 – Age 58 – Collier. Cwm, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Killed by fall of roof coal in his working place.

JONES Phillip - 1889 - 09/12/1889 – Age 32 – Collier. Powell’s, Aberaman Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of side (4.5ft. long, 1.5ft. broad) from the face of stall which was standing nearly square and not spragged. Coal, 2ft. 8ins. thick shale, 6ins. Seven Feet seam, Long wall.

JONES Price - 1884 - 07/10/1884 – Age 60 – Dataler. Westminster No.3, Westminster Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had been sending some timber up a jig, and after starting the journey went into a refuge place. The jig wheel gave way and deceased, getting flurried, ran out of the refuge place and was caught by the descending tubs.

JONES Priscilla - 1881 - 12/05/1881 – Age 4 – Child. Robinhill, Lancashire. Killed by a tub which rolled down dirt heap where she had been placed by an aunt. Not comprised. Female.

JONES R. - 1883 - 05/10/1883 – Age 14 - Door boy. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

JONES Rees - 1881 - 06/08/1881 – Age 35 – Collier. Llwynpia, Glamorgan Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by blown out shot.

JONES Reuben - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 35 – Collier. Cwmaman, Cwmaman Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff) 9ft. x 3ft. x 15ins. from a slip in face of heading between face and cogs 7ft. and 4ft. back. 6-ft. seam. Long wall.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1884 - 18/10/1884 – Age 56 – Miner. Bryn-yr-afr (metalliferous). The wall of a pass gave way while he was shovelling ore into it, and he slipped in and was bruised by the stuff. 2 weeks off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1885 - 2/03/1885 – Age 23 – Rockman. Gaewern (slate). While raising a block of slate with a crane he let the handle slip and received a severe blow from it on the from it on the forehead. 18 days off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1885 - 16/09/1885 – Age 14 - Pony driver. Newton, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Head and shoulder injured by falling in front of tubs while in motion near the No.1 Doe Pit eye. He tripped over his pony’s tail chain.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1885 - 27/10/1885 – Age 43 - Miner Pant-y-gwlanod (metalliferous). A detonator exploded while he was inserting the fuse, he lost the ends of two fingers. 2 months off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1886 - 11/06/1886 – Age 56 – Trammer. Bryn-y-air (metalliferous). A loose stone lying on a stull fell upon him as he was passing underneath. Two ribs broken. Six and half weeks off.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1888 - 26/03/1888 – Age 17 - Pony driver. Newton No.1, Doe Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by tubs his pony having started when he was between.

JONES Richard (injured) - 1889 - 18/03/1889 – Age 56 – Miner. Cae Coch (metalliferous). Explosion of a charge of gunpowder whilst John Jones was ramming down the first layer of tamping with a wooden stick. The hole was bored in solid iron pyrites and there may have been a little iron pyrites in the stuff used for tamping. Richard Jones had both arms broken and John Jones lost the little finger of his left hand. 2 injured. 4 months off.

JONES Richard - 1882 - 02/05/1882 – Age 29 - Asst. hitcher. Fernhill, George Watkinson and Sons, Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Killed by a piece of coal falling down shaft.

JONES Richard - 1882 - 24/01/1882 – Age 41 – Collier. Plas Kynaston, Plas Kynaston Coal Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. inspection made. Deceased was drawing a prop in the waste when a piece of stone fell on his head, injuring his spine. Died 15th January 1883.

JONES Richard - 1884 - 19/02/1884 – Age 34 – Sinker. Ocean Garw, David Davies and Co., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Fall of side of pit.

JONES Richard - 1886 - 24/03/1886 – Age 20 – Sinker. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. They were drilling in side of pit when a piece of fireclay, weighing two tons, fell on them. 2 killed.

JONES Richard - 1889 - 06/07/1890 – Age 42 – Collier. Vochriw, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of roof, 4ft. x ft. at face which was propped. Big Coal seam, 3.5 ft. thick. Long-wall.

JONES Richard - 1889 14/02/1889 48 Miner Blaentwymyn (metalliferous). Owing to heavy rain and the rapid thaw of 12 inches of snow in one night some small watercourses became choked by earth washed into them and flowed over. Some of the overflow ran into an abandoned shaft and found its way into the workings unknown to the men or the agent during the night. In the morning, before it was thoroughly light, the cage went down empty as usual and when it came up no one noticed anything was wrong as the shaft was always a little wet. Six men then stepped into the cage and were lowered: just as they reached the bottom, they found themselves going into water. Richard Jones who was well acquainted with the mine dashed out of the cage through the water in the level knowing that if he went a little way, he would be all right owing to the rise of the floor in the level. Unfortunately, he was drowned in the attempt. If he had remained in the cage he would have been safe for the water was only five feet deep and he was five feet ten inches in height. The other five men managed to clamber on top of the cage and simply got a wetting.

JONES Richard - 1889 - 14/08/1889 – Age 36 – Fireman. Lower Hall No., Westleigh Colliery Co., Lancashire. Killed by stone from the roof whilst he was assisting a man at a former fall. Inspection and inquiry.

JONES Richard - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 24 – Jigger. Mossfields, Hawley and Bridgwood Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Explosion 64 killed.

JONES Richard - 1889 - 23/05/1889 – Age 17 – Labourer. Plymouth Abercanaid, Plymouth Works Proprietors, Merthyr, Glamorgan. A large fall of roof in shaft siding from between two slips. The roof was secured for twelve feet next the shaft by iron rails resting on two side walls, two feet apart, 3 and from here by 12" timbers 2ft. apart.

JONES Richard E. - 1880 - 06/10/1880 – Age 28 – Collier. Westminster, Westminster and Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. He had worked away some coal but had neglected to set any timber under the clunch, which fell upon him. There was plenty of timber in the place.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1882 - 13/11/1882 – Age 27 – Rockman. Palmerston (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He was splitting a block of slate and the upper half slipped off and struck his leg cracking the ankle bone. 2 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1883 - 24/07/1883 – Age 23 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). A hole charged with gunpowder hung fire for about 15 minutes and then exploded unexpectedly. 4 days off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1884 - 14/03/1884 – Age 45 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). He was shovelling rubbish into a truck when a piece of the side of the level unexpectedly fell upon him. 3 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1884 - 22/08/1884 – Age 26 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate). He fired a hole charged with guncotton and gunpowder and it went off all right. After a few minutes he returned to the hole, and there was a little flash which burnt his face slightly. A small portion of the guncotton had apparently, hung fire for some unexplained cause. 3 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1884 - 23/06/1884 – Age 29 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate). Explosion of a charge of gunpowder while he was tamping a hole with an iron bar. 7 months and 3 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1885 - 13/01/1885 – Age 50 – Labourer. Llechwedd (slate). He was lifting his waggon under a block of slate suspended by a crane and striking his hand against a sharp edge had his forefinger cut off. 16 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1886 - 03/09/1886 – Age 40 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). Fell down the face of his chamber from the breaking of the hole containing the iron peg to which his chain was fixed. 6 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1888 - 06/03/1888 – Age 45 – Rockman. Rhosydd (slate). While crossing a self-acting incline he was caught by the balance weight. 17 weeks off.

JONES Robert (injured) - 1889 - 07/06/1889 – Age 28 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). He had lit a candle end, or snuff placed under the fuse of a charge of powder and just as he was leaving he noticed that the snuff had shifted a little he returned to put it right thinking the fuse had not taken fire when the charge went off. He was burnt slightly. 1 week off.

JONES Robert - 1881 - 15/11/1881 - Age 30 - Collier. Grosvenor, New Grosvenor Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was holing and had neglected to set a sufficient number of sprags when the coal fell upon him.

JONES Robert - 1881 - 19/12/1881 – Age 29 – Dataller. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 48 killed.

JONES Robert - 1881 - 20/09/1881 – Age 14 – Screenboy. Wrexham, Wrexham and Acton Collieries Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had gone down from the screen to assist in lowering a waggon, and shortly afterwards as he was passing the waggon he was struck on head by a piece of dirt thrown down by the Screenman who was not aware he was there. Recommended that such young boys should not be allowed to interfere with the waggons in future.

JONES Robert - 1882 - 05/05/1882 – Age 26 – Miner. Oakley Upper (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. Slipped from a rail while walking in a level and sprained his ankle. 22 weeks off.

JONES Robert - 1882 - 13/02/1882 – Age 51 – Fireman. Caepenty, Hyde Barton and Butler, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made. Deceased gone down at his usual time in the morning and for some reason returned to the shaft, and opening the gate, fell down to the bottom, a distance of 14 yards. Deceased was alone, and it is impossible to say why he approached the shaft.

JONES Robert - 1886 – 04/11/1886 – Age 26 – Rockman. Rhosydd (slate). Unexpected fall of rock from a pillar from the side of the chamber in which he was working. The men thought the place safe as they had sounded it a few days before the accident.

JONES Robert - 1886 – 19/01/1886 – Age 15 – Screener. South Durham, South Durham Coal Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Crushed between trucks while bring them to the screens.

JONES Robert - 1889 – 21/12/1889 – Age 21 – Miner. Nook Crumbuke, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatally injured at the face of a down brow engine brow by tub waggons forcing open the stop gate the fastening pin having been negligently left out by a drawer. Died same day at Manchester Infirmary. Inspection and inquest attended.

JONES Robert D. (injured) - 1886 - 11/01/1886 – Age 40 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate). He went to the working place just after blasting, in spite of his partner's warning; some slate rock loosened with the blast fell and fractured his skull. 20 weeks off.

JONES Rowland (injured) - 1884 - 26/11/1884 – Age 14 - Ore dresser. Goginan (metalliferous). He was playing with the gearing of a buddle, and had his arm drawn in by the cog wheels. 4 months off.

JONES Samuel - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 24. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

JONES Samuel Henry - 1882 – 12/09/1882 – Age 27 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Fell a distance of from 7 to 8 fathoms over a stope at the 238 fathoms level, and was killed. Deceased was subject to giddiness, and was really not in a fit state of health to work underground.

JONES Stephen - 1888 – 28/06/1888 – Age 23 – Filler. Wrexham, Wrexham & Acton Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. A stone fell from some slips capping one of the props. The place appeared to be well timbered and the roof was not bad.

JONES T. - 1883 – 02/06/1883 – Age 62 – Collier. Lower Deep, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouthshire. Coming out from work he lost his light and in a narrow place he stood up against the side to let a haulier pass. He did not speak and the haulier, who was coming slowly and could easily have stopped, did not see him, and he was squeezed by the trains. died 6th.

JONES T.C. - 1882 – 07/09/1882 – Age 39 – Lampman. Pelsall, Pelsall Coal and Iron Co., Pelsall, Staffordshire. Injured on September 1st. by stepping out of a cage when descending, the deceased thinking it had reached the bottom. Died this day.

JONES Taliesen - 1887 – 13/05/1887 – Age 68 – Collier. Cwm, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Slipped on plates at pit bottom. Died 1st June.

JONES Theophilus - 1884 – 12/03/1884 – Age 40 – Collier. Bedwellty, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., Bedwellty, Monmouth. Fall of stone. He came out to the end of a stall to talk to a man when was doing some repair some coal fell and knocked out a pair of timbers, and the deceased in trying to get out of the way was caught by the fall and killed.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1882 – 01/04/1882 – Age 32 – Miner. Grogwinion (metalliferous), Pentrhydygroes. He was working in some stopes and carelessly stepped into a small ore pass. 2 weeks off.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1883 – 09/08/1883 – Age 41 – Engineman. Talargoch (metalliferous). He was engaged in packing the stuffing box of the piston rod of a pumping engine when the gland which was suspended by a rope accidentally fell and crushed the little finger of his left hand. 1 week off.

JONES Thomas (injured) - 1887 – 13/04/1887 – Age 49 – Miner. Peelwood, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Hip bone broken by roof falling from a pothole which he had noticed and was preparing to prop.

JONES Thomas - 1882 - 04/07/1882 – Age 52 – Shotfirer. Perry Hall, Perry Hall Colliery Co., Willenhall, Staffordshire. Injured on 22nd June by an explosion of gunpowder. He was making a match with his cartridge lying on the ground when he lighted the match, and the flame communicated itself to the cartridge.

JONES Thomas - 1882 - 05/12/1882 – Age 58 – Collier. Varteg Hill, J Vipond and Co., Monmouthshire. When going to work in the morning he was run over by some railway waggons.

JONES Thomas - 1882 - 17/02/1882 – Age 25 – Collier. Gatewen, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased had drawn his sprags to allow the coal to fall, and was pulling at it with his pick, when a piece from the upper portion of the seam fell on him.

JONES Thomas - 1885 - 25/12/1885 – Age 36 – Collier. No.4, D Davies and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of stone.

JONES Thomas - 1885 - 29/08/1885 – Age 29 – Collier. Wynnstay, New British Iron Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made. Deceased had finished his day's work but before leaving the place knocked a prop out to allow some clod to fall in, jumping back he caught against another prop, and was thrown forward under the stone which fell at that moment. The place was well timbered.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 04/11/1886 – Age 41 – Sinker. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. The side of the shaft, which was in course of sinking, gave way at unseen slips for a length of seven or eight yards from the bottom and thus undermined the last 10 yards of walling which being fresh and the mortar not yet set, fell in upon them. There were 19 or 20 men in the bottom at the time. 4 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 07/05/1886 – Age 42 – Collier. Abercarn, Abercarn Coal Co., Monmouth. Fall of coal. He was putting up a cog under the top coal when a large piece fell owing to two large natural slips at right angles to each other, which were invisible. The place was well timbered.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 07/10/1886 – Age 57 - Collier. Cwm, Cwm Colliery Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone. In holing he liberated a slip which joined another forming a saddle back and the stone fell on him.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 19/11/1886 – Age 39 – Collier. Trimsaran, Trimsaran Colliery Co. Ltd., Kidwelly, Camarthen. Explosion of firedamp about midnight. One of their lamps was found after the accident with the gauze removed. The place was somewhat disturbed and gas must have been given off more than usual or the man may have gone slower owing to there being no person directly in charge of it or leakage may have occurred at some of the doors. They were smoking their pipes after coming out of the mine and were not considered badly burnt but all died within three or four days. 3 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 22/11/1886 – Age 57 - Waggon trimmer. No.9, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Crushed between screen framing and a railway truck while moving it forward for loading.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 24/09/1886 – Age 35 – Collier. Court Herbert Dynevor, Duffryn Colliery Co., Neat, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

JONES Thomas - 1886 - 25/03/1886 – Age 22 – Collier. Abercanaid, Mortgagees of the Plymouth Works, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fell down shaft while ascending.

JONES Thomas - 1887 - 03/07/1887 – Age 14 – Collier. Coegnant, Llynfi and Tondu Co. Ltd., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Deceased and another boy, who were working a pump during Sunday, had got on cage to ascend after signalling and the cage not being raised directly it was thought that he was getting off to signal again when the cage was raised and he tumbled down the shaft.

JONES Thomas - 1887 - 14/06/1887 – Age 48 – Collier. North Dunraven, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. While assisting timbermen to put in some double timbers a fall of roof occurred. On main road 2 feet 9 inches seam.

JONES Thomas - 1887 - 14/10/1887 – Age 40 – Collier. No.2 Ferndale, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of coal at face. 5ft. seam. Died l6th October.

JONES Thomas - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 19 – Rider. Abergorky, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Treorky, Glamorgan. He fell in front of a loaded journey of trains as they were landing at the shaft bottom and was run over.

JONES Thomas - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 23 – Haulier. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.

JONES Thomas - 1887 - 30/11/1887 – Age 53 – Collier. Castle, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof 7ft. long, 3ft. wide between a face slip and a break in the roof, inside the props which were within three and a half feet of face. Deceased was cleaning a place for a prop when the stone fell.

JONES Thomas - 1888 - 03/05/1888 – Age 59 – Manager. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made. They were repairing the arching of an underground engine house which was considered to have been left safe for the day; but a few of the old bricks fell out from the crown of the arch and struck deceased who was resting there after coming out of the workings. He was not considered seriously hurt but he caught cold and erysipelas setting in he died on 17th.

JONES Thomas - 1888 - 14/04/1888 – Age 24 – Collier. Llay Hall, Edwin S Clark, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were getting top coal down after working out a pillar and knocked the props out expecting it to fall. As it did not come they started wedging it down without first resetting the props when the whole of it suddenly came away bringing a large quantity of the over lying clod with it and burying the two men. Accident entirely due to carelessness. 2 killed.
