JONES Thomas - 1888 - 14/04/1888 – Age 24 – Collier. Llay Hall, Edwin S Clark, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were getting top coal down after working out a pillar and knocked the props out expecting it to fall. As it did not come they started wedging it down without first resetting the props when the whole of it suddenly came away bringing a large quantity of the over lying clod with it and burying the two men. Accident entirely due to carelessness. 2 killed.
JONES Thomas - 1888 - 15/12/1888 – Age 23 – Byeman. Elm, George Watkinson and Co. Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was passing along a wide place in the main road when there was a sudden fall of top coal. Men were engaged in repairing this road but they had neglected to set timber and the roof sounded solid. Props should have been set under any circumstances.

JONES Thomas - 1889 - 01/02/1889 – Age 17 – Haulier. Dynevor, Court Herbert Dynevor Coal Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Run over by an empty tram at parting of a stall road. It was thought the points had been wrong and that when the horse turned into the stall, the tram left the rails and be was thrown off and fell under it. Road 6ft. high and 9ft. wide.
JONES Thomas Herbert - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 25. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas 101 killed.
JONES Thomas J. - 1889 - 16/01/1889 – Age 17 – Shackler. Powell’s, Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Cwmneol, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Crushed by trams on engine plane. He was riding on a shackle between full teams in contravention of the Special Rules when the rope broke and the trams ran back until held by the bar hook behind.
JONES W. (injured) - 1884 - 30/01/1884 – Age 45 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). He was assisting to bring a block of slate down a slope upon rollers when the end of one of the rollers caught his leg, and broke the small bone. Five and a half weeks off.
JONES W. - 1881 - 23/01/1881 – Age 20 – Timberer. Chatterley, Chatterley Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Fall of an arch in level.
JONES W. - 1883 - 05/05/1883 – Age 32 – Repairer. Glyn, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co. Monmouthshire. When repairing a road a fall of rubbish occurred which injured his spine. Died 19th.
JONES W. - 1883 - 05/05/1883 – Age 41 – Onsetter. Wells Way, Trustees of Countess Waldegrave, Somerset. Deceased had loaded the top coal and middle decks of a three decked cage and a man noticing that the pit was not at work went and found him dead with his head severely cut. It seems probable that the cage may have slipped off the dogs and the rim of one of the decks caught his head.

JONES Watkin - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 23 – Collier. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.
JONES William (injured) - 1880 - 15/11/1880 – Miner. Bradley Fold 5/4, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. Burned. Entering their place with open lights, where gas was said to have accumulated after the fireman’s examination. No gas seems to have been found for about two years near this place. On the present occasion there was a great fall in the barometer. 2 injured.
JONES William (injured) - 1881 - 05/11/1881 – Age 32 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate), Festiniog. A piece of stone which he was lifting on to a truck fell on his foot and cut it. 10 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1883 - 06/08/1883 – Age 33 – Engineman. Powell (metalliferous). One of the tubes of the boiler of a portable engine made by Messrs. Barrow and Stewart, sprang a leak and the steam and water issuing out of the door, which happened to be open, scalded Jones. 2 months off.
JONES William (injured) - 1883 - 11/08/1883 – Age 21 – Rockman. Plamerston (slate). A block of slate unexpectedly fell from the side of the pillar a few feet above the place where he was working. Right broken. Still unable to work March 1884.
JONES William (injured) - 1883 - 13/10/1883 – Age 15 – Labourer. Frongoch (metalliferous). While playing on a tram waggon during the dinner hour he had his leg torn by a nail. 14 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1884 - 19/09/1884 – Age 20 – Carpenter. Van (metalliferous). While cross cutting a small log of fire wood with a circular saw had the little finger of his left hand cut off. 5 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1885 - 07/04/1885 – Age 30 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). While he was using his crane the chain snapped and the tail end struck him on the face. 2 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1885 - 26/11/1885 – Age 40 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). He had been using a crane to raise a block of slate slung on a chain, somehow the chain slipped on the hook of the crane and the block fell striking him on the foot. 1 month off.
JONES William (injured) - 1886 - 10/05/1886 – Age 40 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). He fell down a precipice and broke his leg. The edge of the precipice was fenced and the man for some unexplained reason had climbed over the fence. Still unable to work March 1887.
JONES William (injured) - 1886 - 17/12/1886 – Age 28 – Labourer. Wrysgan (slate). While pushing a waggon round a corner had his hand crushed between the waggon and the rock. 3 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1886 - 19/01/1886 – Age 44 – Repairer. Cwmorthin (slate). These two men and four others were endeavouring to raise an underground bridge slightly but were not doing their work in the right way. One of the chains broke and the six men fell with the bridge to the next floor, a distance of 35 feet. 2 injured. Williams and Jones received severe cuts and bruises. Both were off for 3 months.
JONES William (injured) - 1886 - 21/05/1886 – Age 50 – Miner. Cwmorthin (slate). Unexpected fall of roof in working place 6ft. high. 2 injured. Lewis 4 months off, Jones 4 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1888 - 06/07/1888 – Age 58 – Labourer. Beryneglwys (slate). An empty truck was pushed against an empty lorry at the top of an incline and knocked it down. It was broken in the fall and a piece of one of the wheels struck William Jones. 6 weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1888 – 16/04/1888 – Age 18 – Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate). He was lowering a block of slate to a waggon thinking it rested firmly he slackened his hold of the crane handle. The block shifted a little and caused the handle to fly round and strike him on the forehead. Two and a half weeks off.
JONES William (injured) - 1888 - 19/01/1888 – Age 52 – Rockman. Aberllefenny (slate). He was using a wedge to detach a block of slate when it slipped in an unexpected manner and squeezed him injuring his shoulder. 6 weeks off.
JONES William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 05/08/1889 – Age 22 - Pony driver. Garriongill, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Foot caught by tail chain; leg fractured. 112 days off.
JONES William - 1880 - 03/12/1880 – Age 30 – Collier. Llay Hall, Llay Hall Coal & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. The deceased were descending the shaft to their work in the morning when the cage caught against the underground haulage rope and by some means slipped out of the wooden pipe through which it was connected down the pit and the men were thrown out falling 80 yards to the bottom. 4 killed.
JONES William - 1880 - 05/10/1880 – Age 40 - Hooker-on. Wrexham, Wrexham and Acton Collieries Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Deceased slipped as the cage was descending and fell under it, he being crushed between the cage landing plates. No one saw the occurrence.

JONES William - 1882 – 01/12/1882 – Age 14 – Collier. Ty Trist No.1, Tredegar Iron and Steel Co., Monmouthshire. Injured by an explosion of firedamp, and died on the 4th. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1882 - 06/11/1882 – Age 20 - Smith’s striker. Tynybedu, Thomas and Griffiths, Pentre, Glamorgan. Killed by falling down shaft through the breaking of a rope. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1882 - 08/11/1882 – Age 32 – Rockman. Oakley Upper (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. Premature explosion of a hole charged with 1and a half oz. or 2oz. of powder. The hole was only 6 inches deep and was fully tamped; it went off as the man was in the act of lighting the fuse. 9 days off.

JONES William - 1882 - 23/12/1882 – Age 13 - Collier’s boy. Deep Duffryn, Nixons Navigation Co Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.
JONES William - 1883 - 01/12/1883 – Age 27 – Trammer. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was taking his tub down a short incline when it got off the road. He was followed by another trammer who had out in his lock and was holding back at the tub when the back gave way and the tub ran onto the deceased who was lifting his own tub onto the road. This accident was caused by the trammers following each other too closely and the manager undertook to make arrangements as to prevent a similar occurrence in future.

JONES William - 1884 - 30/06/1884 – Age 34 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). Unexpected fall of rock from the side of a pillar on one side of the chamber in which he was working.
JONES William - 1885 - 01/01/1885 – Age 61 – Mason. Palmerston (slate). He tried to jump on to the ascending carriage on a steep incline, missed it, and rolled down a distance of 30 yards falling into water at the bottom. He dislocated his hip. He died of congestion of the lungs accelerated by the accident on the 12th. Jan.

JONES William - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 38 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.
JONES William - 1885 - 19/10/1885 – Age 55 – Collier. Golden Valley, A Brain and Co., Gloucestershire. Fall of coal. He had been appointed to examine the workings that morning in place of the overman who was ill. After finishing he offered to help a collier get some coal. He tried it and it sounded strong and immediately after he pulled out some bottom coal the top coal came down and killed him.

JONES William - 1886 - 07/07/1886 – Age 22 – Collier. Garw Ocean, David Davies and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.
JONES William - 1886 - 08/07/1886 – Age 21 – Collier. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The men were about to draw the timber when deceased foolishly knocked out a prop without taking the ordinary precautions and a stone fell out from between two slips.
JONES William - 1886 - 16/07/1886 – Age 32 – Collier. Westminster, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inquest attended. A stone fell out from a pot hole between the props and the face on to deceased. The manager examined the place a few minutes previously.

JONES William - 1887 - 14/12/1887 – Age 50 – Collier. Mardy Locketts, Merthyr Colliery Co. Ltd., Mardy, Glamorgan. Fall of slip of coal. He had been told by the fireman to sprag the coal but did not do so. Died 9th January 1888.
JONES William - 1887 - 31/01/1887 – Age 26 – Miner. Slapewath (ironstone), Sir B Samuelson and Co. Ltd., Guisborough, Yorkshire. Fall of dogger from roof while filling a tub.
JONES William - 1888 - 02/02/1888 – Age 35 – Dataler. Black Park, Black Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Chirk, Flint. Inquiries made and inquest attended. He was gobbing some dirt alongside a new road where the tops had been got down when a piece of top coal rolled off from the side breaking three lids which supported it. On examination the lids proved to have had the dry rot hence their breaking.
JONES William - 1888 - 09/04/1888 – Age 40 – Quarryman. Combe Down (metalliferous), Thomas Mintey, Bath, Somerset. While engaged landing a block of stone on the surface the chain broke and he fell with the stone into the mine shaft.
JONES William - 1888 - 12/06/1888 – Age 24 – Labourer. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Steam Coal Co., Penrikyber Glamorgan. Fall of roof at month of an old stall which had been stowed where he was building a wall of stones. He attempted to remove a cog before the wall was built. 4 feet seam, 6ft. thick. Longwall.
JONES William - 1888 - 24/11/1888 – Age 47 - Tram puller. George Powells, Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fell into upper deck of cage as it was leaving the top after the trams had been changed and was crushed to death.
JONES William - 1889 - 06/11/1889 – Age 21 – Collier. Merthyr Aberdare, Merthyr Colliery Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff) 12ft x 10ft x 10ins. from a slip at face of stall road. Three pairs of timbers were discharged 9 ft. Seam, 3ft. 7ins. thick. Longwall.
JONES William Edward - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Age 13. Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas 68 killed.
JONES William H. - 1882 - 21/07/1882 – Age 21 – Rockman. Palmerston (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth He was struck by a stone from blasting in from blasting in an adjoining chamber. The stone was projected through a level in a pillar of slate and rebounded against Jones. Skull fractured. 3 months off.
JONES William Henry (injured) - 1882 - 25/10/1882 – Age 18 – Miner. Drws-y-Coed (metalliferous), Nantlle. Explosion which took place as he was boring in an old socket which had been full of water for some weeks. It is supposed that it contained remnants of dynamite. Face and arms burnt. 3 weeks and 3 days off.
JONES William J. - 1889 - 15/04/1889 – Age 19 – Rider. Phoenix, Phoenix Colliery Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. While riding out behind a full journey he slipped off the rope, fell upon it, and was fatally injured.
JONES William Parry (injured) - 1889 - 13/04/1889 – Age 39 – Rockman. Votty & Bowydd (slate). Explosion of a charge of gunpowder while he was in the act of lighting the touch-paper at the end of the fuse. The hole was being fired a second time as the first blast had merely produced a crack as it was wet and had clayed out after the first blast. It was a pillaring hole fired to the top with powder and having no tamping beyond a wad of moss. Probably trying to set fire to the touch paper the man ignited the fuse. He had the back of his hand burnt and he hurt his foot in falling. 16 weeks off.
JONES William Prosser - 1887 - 10/01/1887 – Age 16 – Collier. Lower Deep, J Jancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. Fall of roof. The top had been tried by the foreman and the boy's father a few minutes before the accident and seemed strong. A slant or slip running through the coal into the roof caused the fall.
JONES William R. - 1882 - 13/02/1882 – Age 20 – Rider. Tylors, A Tylor and Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by falling under a journey of full trams.

JOPLING John - 1889 - 22/05/1889 – Age 40 – Deputy. Cornsay, Fernes and Love, Lanchester, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while drawing a jud.
JORDAN James - 1888 - 11/05/1888 – Age 27 – Hewer. North Seaton, Cowpen Coal Co., North Seaton, Northumberland. Coal fell upon him no sprags in. Injured October 28th, 1887.
JORDAN John - 1886 - 17/11/1886 – Age 27 – Stallman. Calttershall (fireclay), Executors of E Bowen, Brettell Lane. Was thrown out of cage while ascending.
JORDAN Joseph W. - 1884 - 24/10/1884 – Age 20 – Collier. Foxes Bridge, Foxes Bridge Colliery Co., Forest of Dean. Killed on an engine plane. Deceased and a boy were coming out together from their work, and met a journey of empty carts going in. They got up against the side of the road to allow the journey to pass, and just then the first cart jumped off the road, and Jordan was crushed against some timber. There was a manhole within six yards of him, and a red light on the front of the train, which was visible for at least 100 yards, but in hurrying to, get out they ran it too fine and neglected to go into a refuge hole.
JORDAN William - 1884 - 24/01/1884 – Age 11 - Screen boy. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Run over by trucks under screens while crossing the line, following his employment.
JORDAN William - 1888 - 12/01/1888 – Age 50 – Miner. Cragshall (ironstone), Pease and Partners Ltd., Loftus, Yorkshire. While lifting a waggon on the way in his board it canted over crushing his head against the side of the place.
JOSEPH Bullough (injured) - 1887 - 14/01/1887 – Age 41 – Engineman. Snydale, Col. Starkie Le Gendre, Lancashire. Face scorched when letting water out of a gas main. Resumed work 17th.

JOUGHIN Daniel (injured) - 1885 - 03/01/1885 – Age 35 – Shaftman. Foxdale (metalliferous). He fell 10 feet from a stage while fixing timber in the shaft. 13 days off.
JOYCE Henry - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 16. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed.
JOYCE Henry - 1887 - 05/10/1887 – Age 30 - Miner No.4 (metalliferous), Gillfoot Mining Co., Egremont, Cumberland. Deceased was standing at an eye in No.4 and was looking in the shaft for some unknown reason when descending cage struck him. He had no business at the shaft. Injured 28th September, died 5th October from erysipelas.
JOYCE or JONES Henry - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 16. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery.
JOYNSON Robert - 1884 - 26/03/1884 – Age 22 – Waggoner. Westhoughton, Westhoughton Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Hand hurt between his tub and the roof. Died 30th.
JOYNSON S. - 1886 - 23/06/1886 – Age 17 – Jigger. Silverdale, Butterley Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Crushed against shaft fittings while ascending.
JUDGE Edward (injured) - 1884 - 19/12/1884 – Age 35 – Miner. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Slightly burned re-entering with open light instead of safety lamp.
JUDGE Patrick (injured) - 1886 - 20/05/1886 – Age 14 - Pulley attendant. Sovereign, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Lancashire. Injured by coal falling whilst he was withdrawing sprags to take it down.
JUKES Thomas - 1888 - 28/07/1888 – Age 14 - Gin driver. Ettingshall, Jonathan Williams, Bilston, Staffordshire. Fell into the working shaft of a gin.
JYSON JOHN - 1887 - 04/05/1887 – Age 41 – Miner. B. 30 (metalliferous), Lindal Harrison Ainsle and Co., Lindal, Lancashire. This man fired a shot in the side of the working on looking at the result a piece of rock fell off the side on him. If he had examined the place properly after firing the shot the accident would not have occurred as his mate at the inquest admitted they both knew this piece of rock to he bad before firing the shot and they were in a hurry to get their metal out and being near holiday time they wished to get as much money as possible. |
