JENKINS W. - 1881 - 08/02/1881 – Age 53 – Screener. Wingfield, Wingfield Colliery Co., Glamorgan. A draw bar broke on a surface and he lost his presence of mind and attempted to run across the rails. He was struck by the trams and died on the 12th.

One of their lamps was found after the accident with the gauze removed. The place was somewhat disturbed and gas must have been given off more than usual or the man may have gone slower owing to there being no person directly in charge of it or leakage may have occurred at some of the doors. They were smoking their pipes after coming out of the mine and were not considered badly burnt but all died within three or four days. 3 killed.

JOHN Richards - 1888 – 29/05/1888 – Age 36 – Miner. Diamond (metalliferous), Harrison Ainslie and Co., Lindal in Furness, Lancashire. Struck on head by piece of rock from shot. After firing a hole charged with blasting powder there was a report as from an exploded shot. When deceased went into the working another report was heard and deceased was struck on the head by a piece of rock the injuries from which caused his death 30th May.

JOHN Thomas - 1888 - 20/09/1888 – Age 19 – Haulier. Dinas, Dinas Steam Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. He was bringing a tram of rubbish along a heading riding on the shafts, when the tram went off the rails knocked out a pair of timbers, and a fall of roof followed which killed him on the spot.
JOHN Thomas Dawson - 1889 - 16/08/1889 – Age 17 - Ore picker. Burlington (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Park, Lancashire. Crushed by balance bob of pumping engine. He was playing with other boys jumped on the wall protecting the balance bob and crushed him to death.
JOHN Tompkin (injured) - 1888 - 26/11/1888 – Age 35 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. Engaged in drilling in the stope when the stage on which they were standing gave way, having been insecurely fixed, and the men fell with it injuring their heads and backs, but not seriously. 2 injured.
JOHN Williams (injured) - 1884 - 07/05/1884 – Age 40 - Hooker on. Maen Offeren (slate). Though warned by some miners that they were going to fire, he got in the way of their blast and had one of his legs broken. Eight and a half months off.
JOHNASON Luther (injured) - 1889 - 24/06/1889 – Age 30 – Daywageman. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. He was injured on the 8th. December 1888, died today in the Bury Workhouse where he was sent as incurable, from the effects of the accident. The doctor gave the certificate being sufficiently careful to observe that the death was from the accident and it was reported to the coroner. The accident occurred in one coroner's district, the death in another and the burial in a third. Inquiry.
JOHNS John W. - 1883 - 20/01/1883 – Age 22 – Miner. Huntcliffe (ironstone), Bell Bros Ltd., Saltburn, Yorkshire. While drilling a bottom hole a piece of dogger fell from top.
JOHNS Thomas - 1883 - 13/12/1883 – Age 14 - Asst. loco driver. Devon Great Consols (metalliferous), Devon Great Consols Mining Co., Tavistock, Devon. Was employed for coupling wagons and turning points; had been doing this work for four months. When the accident happened, deceased was in the front truck of a row of six trucks propelled by the locomotive from behind. When the trucks stopped deceased was to get out and turn the points. The trucks had nearly stopped when deceased jumped out, and in so doing stumbled and fell across the rails. The fore wheel of the first truck (an empty one) passed over his body, inflicting internal injuries which caused his death a few hours afterwards. Deceased had been repeatedly cautioned not to get out till the trucks stopped.
JOHNS Thomas - 1887 - 03/05/1887 – Age 31 – Carter. East Side, New Bowson Coal Co., Cinderford, Somerset. Injured by a fall of roof and died the same day. A piece of shale which overlies the coal fell upon him. The place was well timbered.
JOHNSON Alfred - 1889 - 07/01/1889 – Age 17 - Loco. Fireman. Talk o’th’ Hill, Talk o’th’ Hill Colliery Co. Ltd., Talk, Staffordshire. A set of 21 waggons was left by the North Staffordshire Railway Company on a gradient falling towards the pit without being properly braked. These waggons ran by themselves to the pit and collided with the colliery loco which was shunting waggons at the screens. 2 killed.

JOHNSON Emmanuel - 1887 - 21/10/1887 – Age 18 - Asst. sinker. Victoria, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Fatal falling in of the brickwork of a well pit which he was assisting to sink. The well was about 5 yards deep, with brick walling on oak curbs hung by four hangers when gravel sand and water rushed from behind and the brickwork collapsed.

The two deceased and another man were engaged driving a place in ore and had it timbered within 4 feet 6 inches of the face and were engaged setting another set of timber close to the face when a fall came without the slightest warning and knocked two sets of timber out which fell on the deceased and killed them. 2 killed.

JOHNSON William - 1887 - 18/04/1887 – Age 42 – Miner. No.17 (metalliferous), Harrison Ainsle and Co., Lindal Moor, Lancashire. The deceased and his mate had fired a shot hole four times in a large piece of ore in the roof of the working and had rent it the deceased wished to pass under the piece that had been blasted, his mate warned him it was not safe to do, before his mate could prevent him, he stepped underneath it when it immediately fell killing him on the spot. This was a case of gross carelessness.

Explosion of firedamp caused by an accumulation of gas in some abandoned workings being forced into the upcast shaft in an inflammable state and ignited by a fire lamp hanging in that shaft. 3 killed.
JOHNSON William Henry - 1883 - 08/03/1883 – Age 13 - Pony driver. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This happened near the pit bottom and at the top of its incline. The loaded side is raised about 3 feet so that the tubs will run to the pit bottom after getting released from the rope. Deceased was walking along the lower side of the road and with his feet on either side of the rope as the gang was coming up and when the gang reached the top and was being drawn on to the raised portion, the rope sprung up as usual and deceased was pitched under the wheels of the full tubs. There was plenty of room on the other side of the road, where deceased should have been.

A hole charged with dynamite hung fire for 20 minutes, and exploded when the men had returned to their working place, thinking it had missed fire altogether. They received severe cuts, and David Jones had his eyes injured. 2 injured 12 days off each.

On the 3rd August two men fired four holes charged with dynamite in a level and heard four reports, one weaker than the rest. Jones and Lloyd, the next day, found that one of the holes had not done its work properly. They picked out all the tamping they could with an iron rod and proceeded to bore out the remainder with a drill and hammer. While so employed an explosion took place, Jones’ right hand was blown off and Lloyd bruised. Jones 4 months off Lloyd 4 weeks.

He was holding a light while a ripper pulled down some loose stones after a shot and pieces of it fell off on him. Died 7th Nov. Four Feet Seam. Nottinghamshire longwall.
JONES David - 1889 - 09/09/1889 – Age 63 – Labourer. Clydach Vale, Thomas Riches and Co., Tonypandy, Glamorgan. Injured by 9ft prop falling off trains on to his leg. Died of inflammation of the lungs on 23rd September.
JONES David - 1889 - 12/10/1889 – Age 39 – Collier. Ynyshir, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in stall turning off heading which was double timbered and cogged. Roof fell from a slip parallel to rib and discharged two cogs and several pairs of timbers on private branch railway. Two feet Nine seam. Long wall. 3 killed.
JONES David - 1889 - 18/05/1889 – Age 18 – Collier. International, International Coal Co. Ltd., Blaengarw, Glamorgan. Crushed between side of engine plane and loaded trains which had left the rails within 40yds. of shaft double-parting. He had been in a manhole and crossed the road in front of the journey.
JONES David - 1889 - 21/08/1889 – Age 17 – Haulier. Dowlais North Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. In coining down a heading dipping 3ins. per yard with a loaded train and riding on the shafts he fell off and was crushed by the train. There was a sprag in each of the four wheels.
JONES David Rowland (injured) - 1883 - 13/10/1883 – Age 17 – Carter. Plamerston (slate). He tried to make a short cut by climbing over the masonry of a pumping turbine and was caught by the crank. His right arm was broken, and had to be amputated above the elbow. Still unable to work March - 1884.
JONES David T. - 1889 – 11/09/1889 – Age 8 – School boy. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Fell into some hot water near workshops and was scalded to death. Not comprised under the Act.
JONES David W. (injured) - 1889 – 07/03/1889 – Age 16 – Labourer. Aberllefenny (slate). While standing at the end of the chamber in which he was working and while talking to his fellow workmen he slipped and fell on to a ledge and thence into a sink. Luckily, he escaped with only a broken thigh. Twenty seven and a half weeks off. |
