TABERNACLE James (injured) - 1885 - 03/06/1885 – Age 40 – Miner. Westleigh, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by fall of roof from pot hole through neglect in setting props where ordered to do so by the fireman. His own neglect.

TABERNER Peter - 1883 - 17/01/1883 – Age 20 – Drawer. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. A piece of stone fell from between two bars on to him. The road was stated to be well timbered and in good order by all the witnesses and officials. Died 28th August 1883.

TABERNER Robert - 1884 - 12/09/1884 – Age 23 - Slack trimmer. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Son, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased was lowering waggons under the screens and omitted to fasten the breaks of some empty and stationery waggons before taking the front one away, and on doing so the others followed slowly, unknown to him, and jammed him.

TAGGART Mathias (injured) - 1881 - 16/08/1881 – Age 53 – Miner. Central Foxdale, Isle of Man. Fall of ground on returning to his working place 10 minutes after blasting. Shoulder broken. 24 weeks off.

TAGGERT Joseph (non-fatal) - 1888 - 11/06/1888 – Miner. Heather Knowle No.3, James McNaughton Son and Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in horse road.

TAIT John - 1881 - 11/02/1881 – Age 46 – Shifter. Castle Eden, RS Johnson and Co., Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while engaged pillaring in a gateway.

TAIT John - 1882 - 27/10/1882 – Age 60 – Roadsman. Whitehall, Archibald Hood, Lasswade, Midlothian. Fall of roof on main road stoop and room. Died 23rd Dec.

TALBOT William - 1887 - 16/08/1887 – Age 46 – Hewer. East Hetton, Walter Scott, Coxhoe, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from fast side of a broken jud.

TALLIS C. - 1889 - 17/06/1889 – Age 40 – Holer. Walsall Wood, Walsall Wood Colliery Co., Walsall, Staffordshire. Rate of coal from face which crushed the man against a tub.

TALMAN Hugh (non-fatal) - 1888 - 20/10/1888 – Miner. Corby Craigs No.4, Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire. Fall of ironstone.

TAMBLYN Charles Henry - 1889 - 12/01/1889 – Age 21 – Labourer. Marske Valley (metalliferous), Liskeard, Cornwall. Deceased was engaged with his comrade in changing the drawing lift. Whilst lowering the bucket, by the aid of a winch, one of the handles came off through not having been securely wedged and deceased having only one hand to the other handle was unable to sustain the weight. Consequently, the handle flew round and struck him on the head knocking him down the shaft. He fell a distance of about 15 feet on to the next sollar when he was subsequently found by his comrade. He never recovered consciousness and died within five days. At the inquest the jury returned a verdict, in accordance with evidence, but added the recommendation that winches should be fitted with a colter to prevent the handles slipping off and that a brake should be applied to check the winch in lowering.

TANNER John (non-fatal) - 1884 - 08/01/1884 – Miner. Barr, Barr Coal Co., Beith, Ayr. Fall of roof at face.

TANNER John - 1889 - 08/06/1889 – Age 48 – Timberman. South Wales No.2, Lancaster Spier and Co., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. The cage having been overwound they jumped out while it was hanging in the headstocks by the detaching hooks on reaching the ground they fell back into the shafts, the other six men who remained in the cage escaped uninjured. 2 killed.

TANNER Thomas - 1887 - 14/12/1887 – Age 70 – Labourer. Box Hill (metalliferous), Pictor and Sons, Farleigh, Wiltshire. Crushed between trams conveying large blocks of stone from the mine. He went unobserved between the trams which were being pushed together by the small loco, used in the mine, and was found dead in an upright position by the men engaged in shunting. He probably intended to get some stone which was the other side of the trams for a wall he was building.

TANTRAM John - 1883 - 10/08/1883 – Age 16 – Collier. Maindy, David Davies and Co., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

TANTRUM Frederick - 1887 - 08/12/1887 – Age 39 – Tripper. Onllwyn, HN Miers, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Jammed between waggons while shifting them at screens.

TAPPER George - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Age 18. Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas, 68 killed.

TARBUCK T. (injured) - 1883 - 14/11/1883 – Age 27 – Miner. Clifton Moss, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire.

TARGETT Jacob - 1880 - 05/06/1880 – Age 26 – Quarryman. Westwood (Metalliferous), Randell Saunders and Co., Wiltshire. Injured by block of stone falling upon him and died on the 22nd.

TASKIS William - 1882 - 11/09/1882 – Age 20 - Engine driver. Levant (metalliferous), Levant Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Was killed by the man engine crank. An unused candle was found in the crank pit, it is supposed that he must have foolishly stooped to pick it up, and was caught by the crank in so doing. The crank pit is protected by fencing.

TATE George - 1883 - 21/12/1883 – Age 49 – Collier. Allerton Bywater, Silkstone and Haigh Moor Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves. Died 28th.

TATE Samuel (injured) - 1880 - 12/03/1880 – Age 30 – Miner. Pendlebury, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendlebury, Lancashire. Hurt. Roof falling as he was pulling coal from the face. Rams Mine.

TATLER Benjamin - 1887 - 25/10/1887 – Age 62 – Cager. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. Crushed by full tubs against the upright of partition at bottom of shaft.

TATLOCK James - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 21 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

TATLOCK John - 1887 - 23/07/1887 – Age 23 – Miner. Spindlepoint, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof which fell with coal that he was levering down with a pick at his working face. Died 24th.

TATLOCK Samuel (injured) - 1887 - 05/11/1887 – Age 16 – Waggoner. Bridgewater Brassey, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Head and back injured. A link in the chain of the spinney or short gig-brow broke and allowed a full tub to ran on him.

TATLOCK Samuel (injured) - 1888 - 07/05/1888 – Age 26 – Miner. Ashtonfield No.2, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Crushed about the shoulders by top coal and dirt falling as he was preparing to set props.

TATTERS George - 1888 - 18/10/1888 – Age 50 – Shiftman. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon, Co. Durham. While endeavouring to pull down a large stone it suddenly fell upon him.

TATTERSALL James (injured) - 1886 - 09/10/1886 – Age 21 – Miner. Tong End Pasture (stone), Henry Heyes and Co., Lancashire. Injured on forehead by a crane handle which slipped out of his hands.

TAWNS Henry (non-fatal) - 1888 - 24/05/1888 – Miner. Barrwood No.1, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Stirling. Explosion of firedamp.

TAYLOR Christopher (injured) - 1883 - 07/11/1883. Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 68 killed.

TAYLOR E. - 1887 - 02/02/1887 – Age 20 – Collier. Newmarket, J and J Charlesworth, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

TAYLOR Edward - 1885 - 30/03/1885 – Age 14 – Driver. Broomhill, Sowerby and Andrews, Northumberland. Foot crushed by tub getting off rails. Died 9th Apr.

TAYLOR Ellen - 1882 - 11/07/1882 – Age 15 – Screener. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased fell into a tank of hot water when she went to fill her can, and was scalded to death. The tank was 2 feet square and 8 feet high, and appeared to be perfectly safe. Female.

TAYLOR G. - 1881 - 08/11/1881 – Age 54 – Collier. Foxholes, W Wood, Leeds, Yorkshire. Crushed by corfe. Died 13th Dec.

TAYLOR G. - 1883 - 09/05/1883 – Age 33 – Miner. Stonehill, Roscow and Lord, Lancashire. Tub loose on slope.

TAYLOR G. - 1886 - 29/05/1886 – Age 50 - Hanger on. East Gawber, R Craik and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Caught by cage while crossing the sump.

TAYLOR George - 1880 - 04/12/1880 – Age 60 – Collier. Garswood Hall, Smethurst Hoyle and Grime, Wigan, Lancashire. A small stone fell from the roof, striking deceased on the head. The colliery officials had no intimation of the accident for three days after it happened.

TAYLOR Henry - 1889 - 18/02/1889 – Drawer. Whinney Hill, Altham Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fatally injured by a tub waggon which another drawer let go down a slope in the mine. Inspection made. Inquest attended.

TAYLOR James (injured) - 1886 - 07/09/1886 – Age 56 – Labourer. Sough Stone Mines (Stone), JP Entwistle. Injured by stone falling from one side of shaft as he was ascending. It came from old stone walling which had been crushed by an ascending block of stone.

TAYLOR James (injured) - 1886 - 15/12/1885 – Age 41 – Miner. Bradford Four Feet, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Injured by stone falling from a smooth slip. The stone thrust out his prop.

TAYLOR John - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 66 – Pikeman. Springfield, Springfield Colliery Co., Dudley, Worcester. Died 4th Oct. Crushed by a large quantity of clod falling from an overhead fault slip while he was preparing to set timber.

TAYLOR John - 1888 - 20/11/1888 – Age 49 - Engine driver. Ince Arley, Pearson Knowles Coal and Iron Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was fixing his lamp on the engine, whilst the fireman was driving, and was crushed against an empty waggon which was standing close to a crossing and which he did not appear to have noticed.

TAYLOR Lawrence (injured) - 1889 – 07/10/1889 – Age 24 – Miner. Manor White, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co., Lancashire. Back injured by roof falling as he was pulling some roof down. Inspection and inquiry.

TAYLOR Mark - 1881 – 08/06/1881 – Age 14 – Trapper. Upleatham (ironstone), JW Pease and Partners, Marske, Yorkshire. Passing between drifts on surface he got on a set of tubs, contrary to orders, drawn by a loco. engine, one tub got off the way and crushed him.

TAYLOR Peter - 1882 – 22/11/1882 – Age 51 – Horse keeper. Saw Mill, Ince Hall Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made. Deceased was kicked by a horse, but did not mention the accident to any one and continued at his work for a week, when he became ill, and eventually died on the 21st Dec. from inflammation of the bowels.

TAYLOR Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 27/02/1885 – Age 17 – Gigger. Ashton Moss, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Lancashire. A gig handle struck his chest. The sudden application of a very powerful brake caused the breakage of a bolt by which the handle was affected.

TAYLOR Thomas (injured) - 1888 - 09/06/1888 – Age 17 - Pony driver. Agecroft Doe, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Head hurt in engine brow as he was apparently attempting to get into the train, when in motion, which is forbidden.

TAYLOR Thomas (injured) - 1889 - 02/05/1889 – Waggonman. Gin Railway Siding, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Shoulder crushed between buffers of railway waggons, another waggon having been sent forward, as he was closing a waggon door. Inspection and inquiry.

TAYLOR William Henry - 1889 - 23/02/1889 – Age 12. Winney Hill, Altham Colliery Co., Altham, Lancashire. Son of Robert Taylor, collier of 8 Back House Lane, Oswaldtwistle, was working with his father in the pit. About 9.30, the lad left his father with a wagon for the purpose of taking it to the shaft bottom, and on his way there he came into collision with an empty wagon in the charge of a lad named William Osborne, a drawer. The collision caused Taylor's wagon to rebound and knocked him down, he was seriously injured. He was immediately conveyed home and attended by Doctors Illingworth and Loynd, their efforts were however futile in preserving the lad’s life, and he succumbed to his injuries. The next day on Thursday afternoon, an inquest was held at the Printer's Arms, Oswaldtwistle. The occurrence was an accident, and a verdict in accordance with the facts was returned. TEAGUE Thomas - 1889 - 15/05/1889 – Age 35 – Sawyer. Varteg Hill, John Vipond and Co. Ltd., Varteg, Monmouth. A piece of timber which was being removed from the front of a circular saw caught in the teeth and was thrown violently against him causing death in a few minutes.

TEARNEY Henry - 1889 - 08/03/1889 – Age 23 - Asst. banksman. Urpeth, Charles Perkins and Partners, Urpeth, Co. Durham. Crushed by cage at the top of the shaft.

TEAT George - 1886 - 04/10/1886 – Age 29 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesborough, Yorkshire. Was holding a light to his mate, who was haring down stone, when by some means he got under it as it fell and crushed him to death.

TEEDSTONE Richard - 1880 - 19/06/1880 – Age 22 – Engineman. Holly Bush, Ed Williams, Monmouth. He had been alone in the engine house, and was found by his father, fatally injured under the fly wheel.

TEESDALE Isaac - 1889 - 24/04/1889 – Age 45 – Miner. Woodend No.11 (metalliferous), Messrs Bain and Co., Woodend. Fall of ore from roof. An official inspection had not been made for 48 hrs before.

TEESDALE James (injured) - 1884 - 04/07/1884 – Age 16 - Pony driver. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Leg broken, his leg caught in holding back his tram.

TELFORD John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 03/07/1889 – Age 38 – Miner. Kinneil, Kinneil Iron and Coal Co Ltd., Linlithgow. Explosion of firedamp. 15 days off.

TENCH Will - 1886 - 29/11/1886 – Age 43 – Loader. Himley, Trustees of the Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. While walking along a road, in the thick coal seam of No11 pit, a terrific bump threw two tons of coal from the roof on him.

TERRANY Humphrey - 1889 - 23/10/1889 – Age 69 - Horse keeper. Thristlington, Thristlington Coal Co. Ltd., Ferry Hill, Co. Durham. Crushed to death by a set of tubs over the kip while he was at the low or empty side.

TERVENA Charles - 1883 - 15/08/1883 – Age 27 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fracture of the capstan rope which was being used to draw the men to surface. 12 killed.

TESTALL John - 1880 - 21/01/1880 – Collier. Leycett, Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

TEW Henry - 1881 - 22/11/1881 – Age 51 – Dataller. Fair Oak, Fair Oak Colliery Co., Rugeley, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp.

THACKLADY Thomas - 1887 - 29/03/1887 – Age 22 – Collier. White Moss, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. These men, with others, when engaged pillaring back where a weight came over from the goaf and carried all the timber in their place and the roof fell in on them. They had two rows of props on one side of the drawing road and one on the props, 4 feet apart, and one chock at the entrance to the place. There were too many men crowded together in this working place and the timber was apparently sufficiently strong for a 6-feet seam. 3 killed.

THARRATT Christopher - 1889 - 18/02/1889 – Age 49 – Collier. Lea Green, Mrs. FP Radley, Lea Green, Lancashire. Died from injuries received in an explosion of gas 14th. May. 2 killed.

THARROCK Thomas - 1885 - 10/01/1885 – Fireman. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased died on the 10th January 1886. In October 1885 he slightly injured his hand in the pit and was off work for a fortnight when he resumed and continued at work till the 29th. December. The doctor stated that the accident had nothing to do with his death.

THAWLEY S. - 1889 - 21/02/1889 – Age 39 – Collier. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of side. Died 22nd. Feb.

THEOBALD Joseph - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 67 – Shifter. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

THEOPHILAS T. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 40 – Haulier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. 120 killed.

THIRLWAY Robert - 1889 - 04/10/1889 – Age 43 – Deputy. Lumley, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Severe internal sprain or injuries while lifting a tub on to the rails. Died on the 11th.

THIRLWAY William - 1884 - 25/03/1884 - Age 43 – Hewer. Bearpark, Bearpark Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Crushed by fall of coal which fell from a back while kirving.

THIRTLE George - 1887 - 06/05/1887 – Age 49 – Shifter. Newbottle D, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Engaged boring against some old drowned workings, when they holed the water did not come as they expected, they commenced working rods in the hole when some sulphured hydrogen gas came off and overpowered them before they could be got out, they died. 2 killed.

THOM G. - 1881 - 18/12/1881 – Age 48 – Collier. Hollybush, ED Williams, Monmouth. Suffocated whilst raising steam in an underground boiler. 4 killed.

THOMAS Benjamin - 1884 - 26/01/1884 – Age 21 – Hitcher. No.22, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. A small piece of coal fell down the shaft and struck him between the shoulders as he was pushing an empty tram into the cage.

THOMAS Benjamin - 1888 - 29/09/1888 – Age 52 – Collier. Albion, Albion Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. While assisting another collier to bar down some coal the bar slipped and struck him on the side. Died 11th. December.

THOMAS Benjamin - 1886 - 02/08/1886 – Age 28 - Bank rider. National, National Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Wattstown, Glamorgan. Run over by full trains, which ran loose on the engine plane in consequence of the breakage of a shackle.

THOMAS Daniel - 1887 - 12/03/1887 – Age 16 – Collier. Ynishir, Ynishir Steam Coal Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clift) from between two slips which had not been noticed and props 5ft. apart. The roof was deemed strong and there was a row of props within 4ft. of face.

THOMAS Daniel - 1887 - 25/06/1887 – Age 40 – Collier. Forge Slope, Blaenavon Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Blaenavon, Monmouth. Injured by a fall of roof and died on 26th. A stone fell from two slips which ran up into the clod over the coal.

THOMAS David - 1881 - 09/08/1881 – Age 23 – Rockman. Abercwmeiddaw (slate), Corris. He had blasted a hole which threw down the block of slate required, and then he put his ladder against the face and went up to see if any loose stuff was left which required to be taken down. Before he reached the top of the ladder some pieces fell and inflicted fatal injuries.

THOMAS David - 1887 - 11/03/1887 – Age 13 – Collier. Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof 5ft. x 2ft. close to face. Gob wall was within 4ft. of coal and there were props between.

THOMAS David - 1887 - 31/01/1887 – Age 23 – Trammer. Glebe, Samuel Thomas and Co., Loughor, Glamorgan. Cage descended on him while passing through shaft bottom. He had no business on the opposite side. There was no road across at or near the shaft. Died 4th April.

THOMAS David - 1888 - 03/07/1888 – Age 55 – Collier. Cwmbran, Patent Nut and Bolt Co Ltd., Cwmbran, Monmouth. Killed on No.1 South Level engine plane whilst going to work. He was caught by a gang of waggons which presumably he had not heard as in addition to the required man holes there was plenty of room at the side to get out of the way.

THOMAS David - 1888 - 12/10/1888 – Age 12 - Door boy. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Steam Coal Co., Penrikyber Glamorgan. While following haulier, with horse and two empty trams up a steep heading, the last tram became detached ran back and went over him. It was maintained that there was a bar hook behind the tram.

THOMAS David - 1889 - 18/04/1889 – Age 26 – Collier. Elba, Wright Butler and Co., Gowerton, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff) 9ft. x 3ft. x 2ft. at face of level going alongside of a fault. Coal was only 18ins. thick next fault and 6ft. on opposite side of level. 2.5ft.of roof had been ripped down on low side to within 2.5ft. of face of coal. There were no props below the rippings which fell. 6ft. Seam. Pillar and Stall. 2 killed.

THOMAS David - 1889 - 30/11/1889 – Age 17 – Collier. Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Old Gwaun Cae Gurwen Colliery Co. Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff), 7ft. x 4ft. x 2ft. to nothing part of the rippings which had one prop near the middle. It fell from a flat slip. Seam, 3.5ft. thick. Long wall.
