SMITH Joseph - 1880 - 21/05/1880 – Age 46 – Mechanic. Chanters, Fletcher Burrows, Atherton, Lancashire. He was planning the wood laggings of a new conical drum, in the engine house, the turning tool caught too deep, and broke down the lathe rest, &c. deceased, who was an experienced man at such work, was in charge, and by his order, the engine was not stopped, as usual on this occasion, when the tool was being changed to the other side of the rest.

SMITH Joseph - 1886 – 23/07/1886 – Age 49 – Collier. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was driving a place, alongside a fault, and was told by the fireman to set a prop as soon as there was room but this he neglected to do, although reminded by his mate, and a stone fell from across slip on to him. This accident might have been avoided had the place been visited more frequently by the fireman.

Waggon man bringing two empty waggons, to place under screens, allowed them to get too much headway, they came violently against those already under screens upon one of which deceased was standing, causing him to fall amongst wheels and the waggons passed over them. 2 killed.

It fell from a slip or break caused apparently by pressure during several months when the face was not being worked. Inspection and inquest attended, and further inspection after a way had been made through the fall. 1 killed 2 injured.

SMITH Sydney - 1886 - 06/02/1886 – Age 19 – Haulier. Cwmburgwm, James and Emanuel, Monmouth. He was riding on the couplings between two trams and putting up his head, it came in contact with the roof, and his spine was dislocated.
SMITH T. - 1883 - 22/01/1883 – Age 35 – Hitcher. East Slade, New Bowson Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Six full carts were standing about 4 yards from the shaft and the cage was down with an empty cart in it. A journey of coal joined up against the six carts and Smith put his hip against them to stop them. They were moving slowly and there was an empty road at each side but he got squeezed between them and the empty tram in the cage.

SMITH Thomas (injured) - 1881 – 22/02/1881 – Lead dresser. Van Consols (metalliferous), Llanidloes, Montgomery. He was able to walk about 6 weeks after the accident and then went to school. His leg got entangled with the spikes revolving in slime coffer supplying a round bundle and was broken. It had to be amputated below the knee.

SMITH Thomas - 1883 – 30/10/1883 – Age 46 – Tributer. South Caradon (metalliferous), South Caradon Mining Co., St Cleer, Cornwall. Deceased and his comrade were working in a part of the mine that has been abandoned for years. Whilst crossing a plank, over a sink in the bottom of the level, it gave way and deceased fell a depth of 15 feet, some loose stones also falling on him, inflicting injuries from which he shortly afterwards died. From his comrades evidence it appeared that he knew the plank to be weak, no steps, however, had been taken to replace it. Timber would have been supplied if asked for.

SMITHERAM William - 1882 – 16/03/1882 – Age 13 – Tin dresser. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Cook’s Kitchen Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Was engaged on the tin floor feeding buddles and climbed up above the floor to regulate the water coming from the launder whilst doing so he leant his arm on the driving shaft of the buddles, when his jacket got caught between the driving shaft and the runner which carries it, pulling him in under and although the water was almost instantly turned off the wheel, which drives the machinery, he received injuries from which he died a few days afterwards.

While pulling the loaded tram, on the cage from the back side, the cage was raised dragging him up to the top of the arch when the tram knocked him out and he fell on to the plates. The banksman maintained that a signal was made but the hitchers denied this. Died 23rd March.

The coroner said that in future they would not allow a man to go in to the pan and stand on the slack. The jury said that was satisfactory to them, and returned a verdict of "Accidental death".

Datalers were drawing some timber behind him and apparently this had caused the roof to weight. The place, which had been examined and passed by the fireman 15 minutes before the accident, was well timbered.
