MORGAN Edmund - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 27 – Collier. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

MORGAN Edward - 1882 - 17/08/1882 – Age 27 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate), Corris Merioneth. A small piece of slate fell from the face of his bargain on to his wrist. 6 days off.

MORGAN Edward - 1884 - 16/01/1884 – Age 14 – Collier. Garnant, Garnant Collieries Co., Cwmaman, Glamorgan. Breakage of rope. 10 killed.

MORGAN Edward - 1885 - 03/06/1885 – Age 33 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). Premature fall of a block of slate weighing about 20 tons, which was known to be loose, but was not expected to fall until a blast had been fired. The hole had been bored but the block fell before it was charged.

MORGAN Edward - 1888 - 29/06/1888 – Age 54 – Hewer. Ouston, A Charles Perkins and Partners, Ouston, Co. Durham. Fall of roof. Deputy (who was injured) in place about to set timber.

MORGAN Edward Job - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 66. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas 101 killed.

MORGAN Elias - 1888 - 10/08/1888 – Age 42 – Labourer. Gelli Steam Coal, Gelli and Tynybedw Collieries Co., Ystrad, Rhondda, Glamorgan. While travelling up an engine plane, in returning from his work, he was crushed between the road side and a journey of trams, some of which had left the rails.

MORGAN Francis - 1888 - 21/03/1888 – Age 40 – Reddsman. Burntisland (shale), Burntisland Oil Co. Ltd., Burntisland, Fife. On drawing road.

MORGAN George - 1880 - 10/04/1880 – Age 55 – Collier. Wain Level, Morgan, Morgan, Monmouth. Injured by fall of clod and died on the 21st.

MORGAN George - 1884 - 12/11/1884 – Age 24 – Collier. Blaensychan, Partridge Jones and Co., Monmouth. Explosion of gunpowder. He had put five inches of stemming on the powder and was hammering the pricker through it when the charge exploded, and he was killed on the spot. The pricker was made of the ordinary composition commonly used in the district.

MORGAN George - 1885 - 04/01/1885 – Age 68 – Engineman. St. Helens, Pease and Partners Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. scalded on hands and face by falling asleep and engine primed hot water from the condenser onto him.

MORGAN Gomer - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 20 – Haulier. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

MORGAN H. (non-fatal) - 1889 - 01/10/1889 – Age 26 – Drawer. Springbank, Springbank Coal Co., Lanarkshire. Crushed by tub.

MORGAN Henry Absolom - 1885 - 10/11/1885 – Age 23 – Haulier. Tillery, Tillery Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. He was bringing a train of coal down a stall with one spragg in the wheel as was his custom, and when near the bottom when the spragg came out, he lost his light and received a severe blow in the back from the end of the tram from which he died on the 18th.

MORGAN J. - 1881 - 17/09/1881 – Age 59 – Labourer. Wain Llwyd, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouth. Fall of coal whilst stowing rubbish in the face of a stall.

MORGAN James - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 75. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas, 101 killed.

MORGAN James - 1882 - 31/03/1882 – Age 57 – Collier. North Blaina, J and W Stone, Monmouth. A piece of coal he was drawing down fell, and knocked out a prop, which caused the roof to fall upon him.

MORGAN John - 1887 - 25/05/1887 – Age 29 – Collier. Ynishir, Ynishir Steam Coal Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Fall of roof, 6yds long, 4ft. wide, 3ft. thick in face of stall. The roof was slanty and broke down close to the face.

MORGAN Joseph - 1880 – 10/12/1880. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas, 101 killed.

MORGAN Joseph - 1884 – 21/11/1884 – Age 50 – Fireman. Clynniel, Messrs Hankey, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Found dead.

MORGAN Matthew - 1889 - 17/07/1889 – Collier. Leech Pool, Thomas Morse Lydney, Forest of Dean. While engaged setting a prop the roof fell upon him. The place was fairly well propped.

MORGAN Morgan - 1882 - 11/02/1882 – Age 55 – Collier. Maesymarchog, Maesymarchog Colliery Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

MORGAN Noah - 1882 - 28/03/1882 – Age 50 – Overman. Gelli Steam Coal, Gelli Steam Coal Co., Ystrad, Glamorgan. Struck by a wire rope on engine dip.

MORGAN Owen (injured) - 1888 - 23/03/1888 – Age 56 – Miner. Pant Eidol (metalliferous). He was using a pick to get down some work some loose rock in a level when owing to some pieces struck his right eye or some dirt got into it and caused loss of eyesight causing such inflammation that the eye had to be taken out. His left eye had been injured when he was a young man, and he can now only see enough to walk about. Unable to work owing to almost total loss of sight.

MORGAN Peter - 1883 - 28/06/1833 – Age 13 – Drawer. Longriggend, James Nimmo and Co., New Monkland, Lanarkshire. Knocked down shaft by self-acting gate at mid-working, while reaching on to cage for his tea flask left on hutch by mistake.

MORGAN Rees - 1887 - 15/06/1887 – Age 25 – Collier. Cwm Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof between two slips parallel to the face of coal in a heading skip in Yard vein. The fall was 10ft. long

from 2 to 6ft. wide. The outside slip might have been detected by a careful examination yet there were no props below the roof which fell. Pillar and stall strong rock roof.

MORGAN Rees - 1889 - 19/11/1889 – Age 30 – Collier. Plymouth Works, Abercanaid Plymouth Works mortgagees, Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (1 ft. x 2.5ft. from 2ins. 4 ins. thick) between the face and row of props 4ft. back. 5.5ft. seam. Longwall. Died 12th July.

MORGAN Richard (injured) - 1885 - 01/04/1885 – Age 35 – Rockman. Bryneglwys (slate). Unexpected fall of rock from the roof of the chamber 40 or 50 feet above him. 26 days off.

MORGAN Richard - 1886 - 21/10/1886 – Age 50 – Collier. Aberaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberaman, Glamorgan. Fall of coal and middle dirt from the face in consequence of insufficient spragging.

MORGAN T. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 17 – Haulier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

MORGAN T.J. - 1881 - 28/02/1881 – Age 20 – Shackler. Black Vein Risca, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Killed by descending cage He had been cautioned by the hitcher not to cross the shaft, but he persisted in doing so, though there was a proper way round.

MORGAN Thomas - 1887 - 15/08/1887 – Age 47 – Fitter. North Blaina, J and W Stone, Blaina, Monmouth. Crushed by descending cage at pit eye, while engaged at the pump door. It resulted through a confusion of signals and there not being a proper division or fence between the pumping and winding parts of the shaft.

MORGAN Thomas - 1888 - 06/12/1888 – Doorkeeper. Castle, Crawshaw Bros., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Struck by a runaway tram on a rise heading. He was 30yds. from the door which he attended.

MORGAN Thomas - 1888 - 30/04/1888 – Age 45 – Labourer. Aberdare Works River Level, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff) while clearing a fall on stall road (9ft. wide x 6ft. high), six yards from face. Pillar and stall.

MORGAN Thomas - 1889 - 05/10/1889 – Age 18 - Coal trimmer. Powell’s Duffryn, George Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Crushed between the buffers of two trucks which were being shunted under screens by his father.

MORGAN W.E. - 1880 - 22/09/1880 – Age 34 - Mining engineer. White Oak, White Oak Colliery Co., Somerset. Fell out of descending cage; he was alone in the cage and there was nothing to show what caused the accident.

MORGAN W.H. - 1887 - 11/07/1887 – Age 13 - Door boy. Varteg, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Talywain, Monmouth. Fall of roof coal from slips. The piece about five feet long on the three sides and 18 inches thick must have been disturbed by a pony which ran away, and which he went to stop. The rest of the roof seemed quite sound.

MORGAN WG - 1881 - 11/01/1881 – Age 22 – Collier. White Oak, White Oak Colliery Co., Somerset. Injured by a fall of stone and died on the 13th.

MORGAN William - 1880 - 01/05/1880 – Age 64 – Collier. Dinas Main, Dinas Main Coal Co., Gilvach Goch, Glamorgan. Crushed between cage and keps on the surface.

MORGANS John - 1887 - 03/12/1887 – Age 21 – Collier. Clay Level, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Rhymney, Monmouth. Fall of roof through not setting timber as the circumstances of the place required.

MORGANS Joseph - 1881 - 27/07/1881 – Age 35 – Filler. Denaby Main, Denaby Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

MORGANS Mary (injured) - 1882 - 31/08/1882 – Age 25 - Lead ore dresser. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. A tram waggon on an incline became unhooked, ran down and struck her as she was wheeling ore in a barrow. 10 weeks and 3 days off. Female.

MORGANS Thomas (injured) - 1881 - 10/10/1881 – Age 57 – Trammer. Glogfawr, Devil’s Bridge. Fall of a piece of the roof of the level in which he was tramming. Back bruised. 1 week off.

MORGANS Thomas (injured) - 1888 - 19/06/1888 – Age 55 – Miner. Lisburne (metalliferous). A piece of the side of the level which I was being taken down by his partner fell against his foot and ankle. 12 weeks off.

MORGANS Thomas - 1880 - 21/07/1880 – Age 63 – Labourer. Penydarren No.2, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of coal and stone.

MORGANS William (injured) - 1884 - 14/05/1884 – Miner. Palmerston (slate). Morgans was using an iron bar to tamp a hole charged with gunpowder and guncotton when the charge exploded killing Jones and fracturing Morgan’s skull. 1 killed 1 injured. Morgan 2 months and 4 days off.

MORLAND Gilbert Thomas - 1889 - 19/10/1889 – Age 54 – Deputy. Langley Park, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Witton, Co. Durham. Crushed by fall of stone while drawing a jud.

MORLEY Frederick - 1888 - 17/12/1888 – Age 14 – Driver. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while he was driving a set of tubs along the Rolleyway. The tubs seem to have left the metals and drawn some props.

MORLEY James - 1881 - 01/10/1881 – Age 27 – Miner. Crossfield (metalliferous), Crossfield Iron Ore Co., Cumberland. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

MORLEY Martin - 1884 - 25/01/1884 – Age 41 – Labourer. Crow Orchard, Crow Orchard Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was leaning against the buffer of a stationery waggon

when another waggon was lowered against it unobserved by him by a person who had not taken the precaution of seeing that the road was clear.

MORLEY Oliver (injured) - 1884 - 04/07/1884 – Age 43 – Miner. Foggs, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Gas firing at his candle when the roof began to move.

MORLEY Patrick - 1888 - 20/03/1888 – Age 30 – Miner. Wharton Hall, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal by roof falling as he was taking it down with a bar after a shot.

MORNE Henry - 1884 - 08/04/1884 – Age 21 – Dataler. No.3 Pewfall, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was working for a contractor, who allowed him to take a tub down an incline of 7 inches to the yard with only a drill in for a scotch, and the tub overpowering him he was flung against a prop, breaking his skull. The contractor was very negligent of his duty, as the man had only recently come into the pit, and knew little or nothing of its dangers.

MORREY J. - 1884 - 29/08/1884 – Age 60 - Bank labourer. Podmore Hall, Cooper and Craig, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Crushed between two buffers whilst shunting.

MORRIES Thomas - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 36. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas 101 killed.

MORRIS Alfred (injured) - 1885 - 18/02/1885 – Age 19 – Drawer. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Injured slightly by a fall of stone from the roof in the gig-brow in the 2 yards mine. The fireman’s judgement was at fault he having considered it solid and safe upon examining it previously.

MORRIS B. - 1883 – 23/03/1883 – Age 71 – Collier. Panty Forest, Beaufort Colliery Co., Monmouthshire. He was holing under some coal and it fell upon him. He knew it was dangerous but thought he had time to finish holing.

MORRIS Ben - 1889 – 20/10/1889 – 27 – Sinker. Lewis’ Merthyr, Coedcae Lewis’, Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of fireclay from side of sinking pit and about 7ft. from bottom.

MORRIS David (injured) - 1888 – 07/01/1888 – Labourer. Rhosydd (slate). While tramming a load of rubbish to the tip a heavy stone fell from the waggon on to his leg. 20 weeks off.

MORRIS David - 1881 – 29/03/1881 – Age 47 – Hardgroundman. Park (Ocean), D Davies and Co., Ystrad Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fall of stone.

MORRIS David - 1884 - 06/11/1884 – Age 28 – Collier. Tylor’s, A Tylor and Co., Tylor’s Town, Glamorgan. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

MORRIS Edward (injured) - 1882 - 25/04/1882 – Age 68 – Miner. Snailbeach (metalliferous), Minsterley, Shropshire. Premature explosion of a charge of powder while ramming in the first layer of tamping with a copper tipped iron bar. 1 month off.

MORRIS Edward - 1884 - 21/11/1884 – Age 26 – Collier. Brynkinalt, Brynkinalt Colliery Co Ltd., Chirk, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The fireman had fired a shot for him and after loading up the coal he was pulling a loose piece from the face, when he feared a slip and a piece of the top coal fell on him.

MORRIS Edward - 1888 - 12/10/1888 – Age 21 – Miner. Scot Lane No.7, William Woods and Son, Lancashire. Fatal by roof falling from each side of a prop which was left standing. Died Nov. 28th.

MORRIS Ellis Evan (injured) - 1881 - 20/01/1881 – Age 41. Nantille (metalliferous), Carnarvon. Explosion of 2lbs. of gunpowder in a tin canister from a spark which fell into it as they were preparing to blast. 16 days off. 2 injured.

MORRIS Enoch (injured) - 1889 - 25/03/1889 – Age 14 - Asst. hooker on. Nook Crumbuke, Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Thigh broken by a train of tubs running upon him in the shaft level a shackle link having broken the gig brow. Inspection and inquiry.

MORRIS Evan (injured) - 1881 - 20/01/1881 – Age 30. Nantille (metalliferous), Carnarvon. Explosion of 2lbs. of gunpowder in a tin canister from a spark which fell into it as they were preparing to blast. 16 days off. 2 injured.

MORRIS Gower - 1887 - 02/08/1887 – Age 18 – Rider. North Dunraven, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Crushed between side of road and trams on engine plane, the trams having gone off the rails.

MORRIS Hugh (injured) - 1888 - 08/02/1888 – Age 21 – Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate). He was shifting a block of slate down a deep of rubbish with a crowbar when another block rolled and struck his foot. 11 weeks off.

MORRIS Isiah - 1880 - 21/08/1880 – Age 38 – Stallman. Bailey Brook, Butterley Iron and Coal Co., Langley Mill, Derbyshire. Taking down coals, which set the roof at liberty and it fell upon him.

MORRIS Israel - 1885 - 10/03/1885 – Age 14 – Drawer. Hindley Field, Norris and Lees, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This accident was canted by a fall of roof in a main road breaking down the bars and props. It appeared to have been timbered to the best of the officials' judgement.

MORRIS John - 1884 - 03/06/1884 – Age 16 – Haulier. Deep Duffryn, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fell under tram.

MORRIS John - 1884 - 21/11/1884 – Age 35 – Rockman. Cwmorthin (slate). Unexpected fall of slate from the face of bargain. He and his partners had examined the face several times and thought that it was safe but a large block of slate slipped away from a concealed joint and struck him in its fall. He died 16 days after.

MORRIS John - 1885 - 05/10/1885 – Age 54 – Shaftsman. Llain-hir (metalliferous). Through carelessness a plank was allowed to slip from a lodge and it struck Morris, who was at work in the shaft a few fathoms below.

MORRIS John - 1885 - 27/11/1885 – Age 35 – Collier. Queen, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased and his drawer had lifted the loaded tub on to the rails and were guiding it down the road which was very

steep at that point when it jumped off the road at a curve and knocked out a prop which stood about a foot from the rail and a stone fell out onto deceased.

MORRIS Llewellyn - 1889 - 06/11/1889 – Age 40 – Overman. Talyclyn, Talyclyn Colliers and Firebrick Co. Ltd., Pontardulais, Glamorgan. He had sent a train loaded with rails up the slant and was walking down to a lower landing when the shackle or capping at end of rope broke and the tram ran down overtaking and striking him.

MORRIS Pryce - 1889 - 04/01/1889 – Age 23 – Filler. Lodge, Lodge Colliery Co. Ltd., Chirk, Staffordshire. Fall of roof. A piece of stone projecting over the side of a tub knocked out a prop and caused the fall.

MORRIS Richard - 1885 - 15/04/1885 – Age 60 – Collier. Terrace, Rhymney Iron Co., Glamorganshire. Fall of stone. He was standing lighting a pipe when the roof fell. Timbers were placed eight feet apart, and the top looked good and had sounded so shortly before.

MORRIS Robert (injured) - 1883 - 27/08/1883 – Age 28 – Rockman. Oakeley Middle (slate). He states that he was putting a cartridge of gun cotton into a hole with his hand when it exploded. Possibly a spark from his candle may have caused the accident, or possibly he may have taken a match from his pocket with the explosive. 6 weeks off.

MORRIS Robert - 1882 - 26/12/1882 – Age 32 – Rockman. Oakley Upper (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He was struck on the eyebrow by the handle of a crane. About 4 weeks off.

MORRIS Robert - 1883 - 07/04/1883 – Age 37 – Collier. Plaskynaston, Plaskynaston Coal Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was taking a piece of coal off the side of his level to straighten it when there was a sudden heavy fall of top coal from between three slips. The place was fairly well timbered.

MORRIS Robert - 1887 - 09/07/1887 – Age 32 – Hitcher. No.1 Ferndale, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Struck on head by something (probably a stone) falling down the shaft while he was in the act of crossing the bottom and the cages running in the shaft. Died 10th August.

MORRIS Samuel - 1882 - 21/12/1882 – Age 19 – Miner. Maen Offeren (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. Fall of a large slab of the 9 inch bed, while he was in the act of taking it down.

MORRIS Samuel - 1889 - 04/12/1889 – Age 25 – Miner. Chequerbent, Lancashire. He had on the 23rd. June, been slightly injured in the Yard Seam, but death was attributed to tuberculosis debility. No inquest. Non-Comprised.

MORRIS Sidney - 1880 - 03/05/1880 – Age 25 – Sinker. Newfield, Bolckow Vaughan and Co., Bishop Auckland, Durham. Suffocated by black damp in a sinking pit which was only 14 yards deep. Morris as charge man, went down first, and the other two went to his rescue and they were all lost. 3 killed.

MORRIS Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 14/09/1885 – Age 37 – Miner. Bridgewater, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall of top coal in a bay four yards wide in the Doe Mine where the bay had recently been cut into by a tunnel. The coal burst off the face over a sprag.

MORRIS Thomas - 1882 - 11/10/1882 – Age 16 – Collier. Clay Level, Rhymney Iron Co., Monmouth. Some of the clod which overlies the coal fell upon him.

MORRIS Thomas - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 40 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

MORRIS Thomas - 1888 - 06/04/1888 – Age 45 – Contractor. Douglas Bank, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The contractor with two men were going down in the hoppet when by some means they were thrown out, and falling to the bottom, a distance of 200 yards, killed two other men. 5 killed.

MORRIS William (injured) - 1881 - 07/06/1881 – Age 30. Grogwinion (metalliferous), Devils Bridge. They were struck by stones from a blast owing to their not having retired to a safe place. 9 days off. 2 injured.

MORRIS William (injured) - 1882 - 08/08/1882 – Age 19 – Miner. Palmerston (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. They did not retire from the top of a sinking shaft while blasting was going on in a rise below, although they had been warned in time. The blast broke through, and they were struck by stones. Hughes had one arm broken, part of the humerus was removed, but he will in time be able to use the arm a little. Hughes still unable to work. Morris 5 weeks off. 2 injured.

MORRIS William (injured) - 1883 - 17/04/1883 – Age 28 – Rockman. Maen Offeren (slate). He slipped while climbing with a chain in his hand and fell down the face of his bargain. 3 weeks off.

MORRIS William (injured) - 1885 - 23/11/1885 – Age 26 – Miner. Brinsop Hall, Arley Brinsop Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by stone from which fell near the face from a slip and a break and uncapped some props. The fireman had only just left the place which was well propped.

MORRIS William (injured) - 1885 - 28/03/1885 – Age 37 – Shotlighter. Croft Side, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Injured at bottom of engine brow in the Cannel Mine by runaway tubs through the breakage of a coupling link. Thinking it was only tubs off the rails he was crossing the brow to the signal rope in order to stop the engine when caught by these tubs.

MORRIS William - 1885 - 13/01/1885 – Age 48 – Collier. Crawford No.1, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased had his toe crushed in October 1882. He has worked at intervals since but ultimately succumbed to the injury then received.

MORRIS William - 1887 - 02/05/1887 – Age 41 – Sinker. No.1 Vochriw, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. They had slung a stage to a bunton in an air pit where some pipes were being put in but failing to make it secure the bridle chains slipped the stage canted and they fell off. 2 killed.

MORRISEY Patrick (injured) - 1889 - 21/02/1889 – Age 41 – Miner. Broomstair, Hyde and Haughton Colliery Co., Lancashire. Injured by a tub running brow. It was a gig with several hooking on places for which an intermediate rope, called a swivel, was required. A drawer omitted hooking the swivel to the main rope. Inspection and inquiry.
