PHYTHIAN Joseph - 1885 - 26/03/1884 – Age 61 - Pusher on. Brynn Hall, W and EF Crippin, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made, deceased was lifting a tub when he slightly injured his side against the rope. There was a doubt as to whether his death was due to the accident.

PICARD G. - 1889 - 14/03/1889 – Age 35 – Carpenter. Mirfield, Mirfield Coal Co., Mirfield, Yorkshire. Fell down shaft while repairing pumps.

PICK John Alfred - 1881 - 28/09/1881 – Age 14 – Doorboy. South Leicester, South Leicester Coal Co., Coalville, Leicester. Fell down and trod upon by a horse.

PICKARD Edward - 1881 - 04/05/1881 – Age 25 – Loader. Charity Bedworth, Bedworth Coal and Iron Co., Coventry, Warwick. Fall of roof.

PICKARD James - 1883 - 24/07/1883 – Age 15 - Screen boy. Bedworth, Bedworth Coal and Iron Co., Coventry, Warwick. Bottom door of coal waggon fell open whilst shunting under the screens; boy fell through and waggon passed over him.

PICKARD John - 1887 – 24/10/1887 – Age 56 – Master shifter. Walker, Walker Coal Co., Walker, Northumberland. Explosion of coal dust, firedamp and air. 8 killed.

PICKERING George (injured) - 1886 - 04/02/1886 – Age 58 – Miner. Fromgoch (metalliferous). He was taking down loose ground after blasting when a piece struck his right arm and broke it. 11 weeks off.

PICKERING J. - 1885 - 09/06/1885 – Age 17 - Horse driver. Lilleshall, Lilleshall Co., Wellington, Shropshire. While passing under some settings roof and sides gave way.

PICKERING Thomas - 1889 - 23/08/1889 – Age 16 - Slack carrier. Ettingshall, James Davis, Deepfields, Staffordshire. Suffocated by blackdamp.

PICKERING William - 1880 - 21/01/1880 – Dayman. Leycett, Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

PICKERVANCE James - 1882 - 01/12/1882 – Age 24 – Banksman. Sherdley Bornes, Robinson, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inquiries made. The man put his foot on the cage to lift the catches before it was at rest, and as he had not put the keps in, the cage went lower than he expected, and his leg was caught and crushed between the cage and flat sheets.

PICKFORD William - 1884 - 24/09/1884 – Age 27 – Collier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Fell off descending cage. He and fifteen others were going down together and when about halfway down the shaft the cage caught against the side and deceased was thrown out. All appears to have been working smoothly and it is difficult to account for the carriage striking the side.

PICKIN William - 1880 - 25/03/1880 – Age 20. Shelton, Earl Granville, Stoke, Staffordshire. Got entangled with rope and rum at top of incline.

PICKLES Joseph - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 51 – Shifter. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

PICKUP Edmund - 1887 - 02/12/1887 – Age 50 – Fireman. Ashworth, Ashworth Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Arm broken by fall of stone from the roof in a brow where he was removing dirt.

PICKUP H. (injured) - 1883 - 23/05/1883 – Waggoner. Grimebridge, George Hargreaves and Co., Rossendale, Lancashire. Tub.

PICKUP John (injured) - 1887 - 10/09/1887 – Age 16 – Drawer. Red Walls, Thomas Simpson & Co., Lancashire. Hurt by a piece of roof falling when Holden took out a brick stopping, 2 injured.

PIERCE Edward (injured) - 1888 - 01/01/1888 – Age 50 – Labourer. Oakeley (slate). While hooking empty waggons together on a siding he was caught between two of them and received a blow on the head and shoulder owing to a train being run in too far, and so striking the empties. Three and a half weeks off.

PIERCE Thomas (injured) - 1882 - 17/07/1882 – Age 30 – Shaftsman. Prince Patrick (metalliferous), Halkin, Flint. Fell 15 feet from a plank while doing some repairs in the shaft; broke left leg a little above ankle. 15 weeks off.

PIERS John - 1887 - 09/05/1887 – Age 58 – Dayman. Foggs, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal. Caught by a tub on a gig brow, where they were clearing dust, the tub having become loose from the coupling chain as a train of four tubs was being started from the top. 2 killed.

PIGFORD R.S. - 1889 - 31/10/1889 – Age 16 – Driver. New Brancepeth, Owners of New Brancepeth Colliery, Durham, Co. Durham. Alleged to have received an injury to head while in cage on the 27th. by a post mortem examination it was shown he died from inflammation of the lungs. The injuries had nothing to do with his death. Not comprised under the Act.

PIKE Robert - 1880 - 17/08/1880 – Age 38 – Collier. Blackewell, A Blackewell Colliery Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof whilst repairing the roadway.

PIKE Thomas - 1888 - 13/08/1888 – Age 30 – Collier. Varteg Hill Big Vein John, Vipond and Co. Ltd., Varteg, Monmouth. Crushed by trams on the engine plane while with five or six other men on their way to work. He appears to have miscalculated his position with regard to the trams.

PIKEMAN John Guest - 1888 - 24/01/1888 – Age 66 – Pikeman. Himley, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Explosion of powder. Died 4th Feb.

PILKINGTON ? - 1885 - 01/10/1885 – Dataler. Standish, Wigan Coal and Iron Co Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased died from a rupture said to have been received in the pit nine months ago when throwing a stone from one place to another. The doctor did not attribute the death to the accident.

PILKINGTON Joseph - 1886 - 04/10/1886 – Age 42 – Collier. Elms, Enoch Moss, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was driving a place 4 feet wide alongside a fault when a stone fell from a cross slip on to his head and there being no one with him he was suffocated. It is presumed that he had no timber set as should have been the case. This accident would probably have been averted had the officials visited the place oftener.

PILKINGTON Thomas (injured) - 1880 - 01/11/1880 – Miner. Cupola, Brooks and Pickup, Hameldon, Lancashire. Burned. In charging a shot in stone work their candle spark from it ignited 4 lbs of powder in the charger and canister. 2 injured.

PILKINGTON William - 1882 - 05/12/1882 – Age 52 – Dataler. California, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Hindley, Lancashire. Inquiries made. The men in going to their work take each other in on their tubs and on this occasion in going down a slight incline one of the men lost his hold, and the tub running away struck deceased who was in front.

PILLING C.H. - 1888 - 09/03/1888 – Age 34 – Hewer. Brancepeth, Strakers and Love, Wellington, Co. Durham. Fall of stone at a breaker while turning away a jud.

PILLING John - 1880 - 06/10/1880 – Age 49 – Miner. Stacksteads, George Hargreaves and Co., Rossendale, Lancashire. Skull fractured, etc. Roof falling from a slip. Died on the 8th.

PILLING John - 1886 - 09/03/1886 – Age 56 – Collier. Legh, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was getting got the last part of a pillar and had his place fairly well timbered when a small stone fell from a slip striking him on the head.

PILLING Joseph - 1885 - 12/02/1885 – Age 37 – Carpenter. Bamfurlong Cross, Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made and inquest attended. Deceased was at work in an engine house at the top of an underground incline. The gang, when coming up, was drawn too far and catching against a prop knocked it out and a large fall of roof took place, burying the deceased who was trying to get out of danger. The engine had only recently been started and given at the evidence given at the inquest there appeared to have been a considerable amount of carelessness shown by all engaged with reference to the signalling.

PILLING William (injured) - 1887 - 07/10/1887 – Age 19 – Drawer. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Head cut by fall of roof whilst building a pack wall near to the coal face.

PILLING William (injured) - 1887 - 07/12/1887 – Age 32 – Gangrider. Lower Hall No.1, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Ankle and leg fractured by slipping under the tubs as he was trimming a lamp when riding on the chain.

PILLINGTON J. - 1881 - 11/04/1881 – Age 40 – Platelayer. Simon Wood, Earl Fitzwilliam, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by waggons. Died 12th.

PINCHBACK John - 1885 - 21/11/1885 – Age 22 – Stallman. Alvecote, Tamworth Colliery Co., Tamworth, Staffordshire. Fall of coals whilst setting holing sprags.

PINCOTT John - 1887 - 03/03/1887 – Age 29 – Collier. Ashton Vale, Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Bristol, Somerset. Injured by a fall of shale and died on the 6th. The man with whom he worked was pulling down some coal. The deceased was standing by a prop waiting. When the coal came off some shale extending about two feet beyond the coal fell with it, and struck him.

PINDER G. - 1885 - 08/01/1885 – Age 16 – Spragger. Whitwood, H Briggs Son and Co., Normanton, Yorkshire. Thrown off engine he was driving.

PINDER W. - 1882 - 09/11/1882 – Age 54 – Collier. Wheldale, Wheldale Coal Co., Castleford, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

PINKARD Edward - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 18 – Putter. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

PINKEY William - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 48. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed. Married.

PINKNEY John - 1886 - 15/04/1886 – Age 19 – Putter. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Head crushed between tub and a prop while coming outbye.

PINKNEY Joseph - 1885 - 07/07/1885 – Age 56 – Horsekeeper. Sunniside, Pease and Partners, Crook, Co. Durham. Injury to foot while getting out of cage. Died on 22nd Sept.

PINKNEY Thomas - 1884 - 10/12/1884 – Age 17 – Onsetter. Seaton Burn, John Bowes and Partners, Seaton Burn, Northumberland. Struck by empty tub.

PINNINGTON Joshua - 1887 - 13/06/1887 – Age 34 – Collier. Sutton Heath, Messrs FR Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was cutting a step and timbering as he went on when some roof fell in front of the bars he had set and caught him.

PIPER John (injured) - 1889 - 08/01/1889 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Was working in a stope at the 142 fathom level when a stone, 6 or 7lbs. weight, fell from the back of the stope and struck him on the shoulder cutting through his jacket and into the muscles. The ground was apparently quite safe and did not require timber in the ordinary sense of the word.

PIPER Joseph (injured) - 1887 - 09/03/1887 – Age 34 – Miner. Peel Hall, James Roscoe, Lancashire. Leg broken by fall of coal and shale at side of an old travelling road which he was repairing a sprag having become loose at the footing.

PIPER William - 1885 - 29/12/1885 – Age 33 – Metalman. Taylor, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Explosion of gas.

PITCHFORD William John (injured) - 1887 - 17/11/1887 – Age 24 – Miner. Foggs, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by stone falling without warning between the pack and the face of work. It came from a small
brow and a roll in the roof and knocked out a prop. 2 injured.

PITT Thomas - 1886 - 02/12/1886 – Age 51 – Pikeman. Sandwell Park, Sandwell Park Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Died 13th Dec. Explosion of firedamp.

PLACE Alexander - 1880 - 14/02/1880 – Age 42 – Deputy. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Fall of a large stone while drawing a jud, it broke off at the last chock post stone.

PLANT Benjamin - 1882 - 19/01/1882 – Age 23 – Bandsman. Old Park (ironstone), Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Killed instantly by a large mass of roof, about 1 ton in weight, falling upon him as he was in the set of setting timber. Cause, a large fault.

PLANT Benjamin - 1886 - 17/11/1886 – Age 22 – Bandsman. Saltwells, Trustees of the Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. Died 19th Nov. Was foolishly standing in front of a carte which he was trying to pull from the side of a road when a bump suddenly threw it on him doubling him up.

PLANT Elijah - 1883 - 06/03/1883 – Age 44 – Pikeman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Fall of roof when cutting out a spurn with a pricker.

PLANT Ephraim - 1882 - 28/09/1882 – Age 36 – Loader. Springfields, Dudley Colliery Co., Dudley, Worcester. Fall of coal from a height of 8 yards in a stall 7 yards wide.

PLANT James - 1889 - 14/02/1889 – Age 49 – Sinker. Woods Bank, Moxley Colliery Co., Darlaston, Staffordshire. Fell out of bowk whilst ascending the shaft. Probable cause a fit.

PLANT John - 1883 - 16/02/1883 – Age 58 – Pikeman. South Staffordshire, Jacob Chilton, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Fall of coal when getting it down in a waste.

PLANT T. - 1881 - 05/05/1881. Park Hall, EE Almond, Cheadle, Cheshire. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

PLATT Hugh - 1881 - 28/12/1881 – Age 30 – Collier. Sutton Heath, James Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of gas.

PLATT John (injured) - 1887 - 19/02/1887 – Age 55 – Dayman. Raikes, Earl of Bradford, Lancashire. Shoulder crushed by tubs in engine brow. The tubs having got off the rails be was attending to them when the engineman tightened the rope and caused them to move.

PLATT John (injured) - 1888 - 14/09/1888 – Age 25 – Miner. Jubilee, Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by stone from a pothole in his working place at the face of a level.

PLATT Joseph - 1888 - 27/09/1888 – Age 22 – Bricklayers labourer. Park, J and R Stone, Ashton, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A chimney, about 100 feet high, was being built and they were raising one of the coping stones by means of a derrick erected at the top of the chimney when the derrick, which was not of sufficient strength, gave way and deceased was knocked off the platform to the ground.

PLATT Margaret - 1886 - 29/07/1886 – Age 21 – Screener. Fir Tree House, Crompton and Shawcross, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was picking out stones on the top of a loaded waggon and was told to get off as the waggon had to be moved. She neglected to do so and when the other waggons bumped up against it she was knocked off and fell under the wheels. Female.

PLATT Ralph - 1886 - 27/07/1886 – Age 52 – Collier. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquest attended. A piece of the ley which is holed off the top of the screen fell unexpectedly on to deceased. It was stated not to have been overhanging.

PLATT Stephen (injured) - 1880 - 02/12/1880 – Age 15 – Waggoner. Agecroft, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Arm broken. In pushing a waggon down a shunt another waggon ran against him.

PLATTEN William - 1883 - 19/12/1883 – Age 44 – Hewer. South Tanfield, James Joicey and Co., South Tanfield, Co. Durham. Struck by tram plate while using it as a lever. Died 26th Mar 1884.

PLATTS Henry - 1886 - 27/07/1886 – Age 47 – Stallman. Riley No.1, Butterley Iron and Coal Co., Ripley, Derbyshire. Died from blood poisoning due to a slight scratch or injury to his finger, by a piece of coal, whilst working in the mine.

PLATTS J. - 1886 - 27/11/1886 – Age 21 – Collier. Waleswood, Skinner and Holford, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

PLATTS Tom - 1883 - 01/05/1883 – Age 30 – Collier. Storforth Lane, C Black, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Injured in shaft 24th. Nov. 1882.

PLIMMER C. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 18 - Chain lad. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once, one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

PLIMMER S. - 1882 - 18/10/1882 – Collier. Lilleshall, Lilleshall Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

PLOUGHWRIGHT T. - 1883 - 19/03/1883 – Age 13 – Boy. Towneley, Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Slipped under fence and fell down shaft.

PLUMMER Samuel (injured) - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Byeworker. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

POCKETT Thomas - 1889 - 02/06/1889 – Age 16 – Collier. Dynevor, Brithdir Dynevor Coal Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of little stone 12ft. long, 1ft. wide, 7ins. thick, while filling coal box soon after starting work in the morning. The stone was overhanging with only one sprag and the place had stood two days. Tiremund seam, 4ft. 6ins. thick. Long wall.

POCOCK John - 1883 - 26/11/1883 – Age 26 – Loader. Stanton, J and N Nadin, Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Fall of roof, sudden weight came on.

PODMORE Edward - 1882 - 23/09/1882 – Age 17 – Dataler. Hall End, Morris and Shaw, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Fall of roof whilst repairing the roadway.

POGMORE Frank - 1882 - 02/05/1882 – Age 27 – Solicitor. Addesley, WS Dugdale, Atherstone, Nottinghamshire. Explosion of gas 31 killed.

POGMORE John - 1882 - 02/05/1882 – Age 57 – Agent. Addesley, WS Dugdale, Atherstone, Nottinghamshire. Explosion of gas 31 killed.

POINTON G. - 1888 - 10/11/1888 – Loader. Podmore Hall, Cooper and Craig, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of coal.

POLAND Robert - 1883 - 04/04/1883 – Age 16 – Trailer. Montreal, John Stirling, Cumberland. Fall part way down shaft.

POLGLASE Stephen (injured) - 1889 - 24/10/1889 – Age 22 – Labourer. Great Work Tin (metalliferous), Breage, Cornwall. Had two fingers broken by a piece of timber when he was lifting, slipping and forcing them back.

POLLARD G. - 1887 - 30/11/1887 – Age 34 – Collier. Nunnery, Nunnery Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

POLLARD Patrick (injured) - 1886 - 12/10/1886 – Miner. Commons, Denis Delany Co., Tipperary, Ireland. Injured by falling out of the box in ascending the windlass shaft. He fell about 20 feet.

POLLARD Richard - 1884 - 20/08/1884 – Collier. Swinhill, George Millar, Dalserf, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while setting props, stoop and room.

POLLARD Scarrier John - 1882 - 16/06/1882 – Age 37 – Pitman. West Poldice United (metalliferous), West Poldice United Mining Co., Gwennap Cornwall. Whilst engaged at surface, attaching flat rods to a travelling bob at Unity Wood shaft for the purpose of working the pumps at West Poldice shaft, the travelling bob suddenly came over on him and crushed him to death.

POLLENDINE J. - 1887 - 15/08/1887 – Age 37 – Packer. Oaks, C Cammell and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal. Died 9th Dec.

POLLIT James (injured) - 1880 - 15/11/1880 – Miner. Bradley Fold 5/4, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Little Lever, Lancashire. Burned. Entering their place with open lights, where gas was said to have accumulated after the fireman had examination. No gas seems to have been found for about two years near this place. On the present occasion there was a great fall in the barometer. 2 injured.

POLLIT James - 1880 - 03/09/1880 – Miner. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Manchester, Lancashire. Thigh fractured by coal from the face of an upbrow. Three Yard Mine.

POLLITT Simon - 1883 - 30/10/1883 – Age 49 – Wheelwright. Lancashire. Fell down in a fit while working at a bench. Died in a few minutes. Not comprised.

POLLOCK John (non-fatal) - 1887 - 09/12/1887 – Bottomer. Barrwood No.1, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Ayrshire. The cage caught him by the belt and he was drawn up to the surface.

POLLOCK John - 1882 - 27/07/1882 – Age 37 – Miner. Stepends (ironstone), Eglington Iron Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire. Fall of roof.

PONSFORD Henry - 1887 - 01/08/1887 – Age 53 – Collier. Weighfach, Forest Fach Coal Co., Forest Fach, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face while working out pillars. There were props within 4 feet of coal, some of which were discharged by the fall. Sixfeet seam; bad roof.

POOL Francis (injured) - 1881 - 17/01/1881 – Age 25 – Miner. West Assheton, Abersoch, Pwllheli. Fall of side on returning to his working place immediately after blasting before the smoke had cleared away. 12 days off work.

POOL John (injured) - 1889 – 21/08/1889 – Age 27 – Labourer. Clay Mines (metalliferous), Kingsteighnton, Cornwall. Had his collar bone fractured and his hip joint displaced by a fall of ground in one of the levels.

POOL T. - 1883 - 12/02/1883 – Driver. Foxes Bridge, Foxes Bridge Colliery Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Kicked by a horse, and died on the 14th.

POOLE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1885 - 11/02/1885 – Roadsman. Rankinston No.2, Merry and Cunningham, Patna, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp.

POOLE Andrew (non-fatal) - 1886 - 28/09/1886 – Drawer. Rankinston No.3, Merry and Cunninghame, Ayr, Ayrshire. Fall of roof.

POOLE Anthony - 1885 - 23/06/1885 – Age 15 – Labourer. Parkside (metalliferous), Parkside Mining Co., Cumberland. Ascending shaft, with three others on cage, suddenly fell off to the bottom, subject to fainting fits.

POOLE C. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 13 - Door boy. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

POOLE Daniel - 1885 - 28/08/1885 – Age 63 – Collier. Pennywell Road, A Brittain, Gloucestershire. Injured by an explosion of firedamp and died on the 8th September.

POOLE John - 1888 - 29/03/1888 – Age 54 – Miner. No.1 (metalliferous), Askham and Mouzell Iron Co. Ltd., Dalton, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. Deceased on going to his work on 19th March expected to find a little gas in his working place, he stuck his lighted candle on the end of a stick and putting it in the face exploded the gas causing injuries from which he died on 29th March.

POOLEY John - 1880 - 21/07/1880 – Age 17 – Miner. Wheal Kitty (metalliferous), Wheal Kitty Mining Co., St. Agnes, Cornwall. Unexpected fall of ground. Lingered until 28th December, when accident terminated fatally.

POPE Emanuel (injured) - 1889 - 28/03/1889 – Age 19 - Asst. Shaftsman. West Godolphin (metalliferous), Marazion, Cornwall. The man fell over a stage in the shaft with a hatchet in his hand and dropped a distance of 12 feet. The hatchet struck his arm above the elbow inflicting a wound which incapacitated him for six weeks.

POPE Francis - 1888 - 10/02/1888 – Age 48 – Hewer. Stanley Drift, Pease and Partners Ltd., Crook, Co. Durham. When he was turning a place away, by the side of a road, he was crushed to death by a putter’s tub on passing.

POPE James - 1883 - 02/06/1883 – Age 41 – Sinker. Park, D Davies and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Explosion of dynamite.

POPE Paul jnr. - 1883 - 15/08/1883 – Age 22 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fracture of the capstan rope which was being used to draw the men to surface. 12 killed.

POPE Thomas (injured) - 1889 - 14/01/1889 – Age 18 – Miner. Carn Bea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Whilst going underground, by the man engine, he fell a distance of 12 feet, owing to one of the steps of the engine having been previously broken off, and fractured his leg. I wrote stating that I considered the man responsible for the safety of the engine should be punished as there had evidently been neglect somewhere. Ultimately the sub-agent of the mine was prosecuted and convicted of an offence against the Act and fined.

POWELL David - 1881 - 04/10/1881 – Age 23 – Roadsman. Vauxhall, Vauxhall Colliery Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was assisting the surveyor and fireman to survey an old tunnel, in which some gas was standing, known to the fireman. Deceased was drawing the chain, and was warned by the fireman not to go into the gas but immediately went forward saying that ‘He could take the chain to the face’ and was struck down and before he could be rescued life was extinct.

POWELL John Price - 1885 - 19/02/1885 – Age 32 – Screener. New Tredegar, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. He was lowering an empty waggon down to the screens sitting on the buffer with his foot on the brake, as was his custom, and his head got crushed between the waggon and the iron support of the screen. He had been employed at this work about 18 months.

POWELL Joseph (injured) - 1881 - 28/07/1881 – Age 20 – Miner. Penoraigddu, Aberystwith. Unexpected fall of ground which let down a piece of wall and the rubbish behind it which partly buried the man for some hours. 11 weeks off.

POWELL Lambroe - 1881 - 14/06/1881 – Age 39 – Underlooker. Pemberton, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased and a fireman were unable to pass through a door, owing to the key being lost, and to save themselves trouble, slid down a rope hanging in a staple pit 26 yards deep. The fireman got down safely, but as the underlooker was descending the spindle through the drum of the jack roll got loose and allowed the drum to revolve, and he fell to the bottom.

POWIS Isaac - 1881 – 04/06/1881 – Age 16 – Driver. Cannock & Leacroft, Cannock & Leacroft Colliery Co., Cannock, Staffordshire. Fall of rock roof caused (it was stated by a sudden subsidence thereof) by what is technically called a bump, a phenomenon best known in thick coal mines.

POWLES Joseph - 1888 – 20/08/1888 – Age 12 – Collier’s boy. Pochin, Tredegar iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof from slips. The place was not well propped considering the nature of the roof there. 2 killed.

POWNALL Peter - 1886 - 18/05/1886 – Age 21 – Collier. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A fall of roof from a slip at the face of his working place owing to deflective timbering. The evidence at the inquest pointed to a good deal of carelessness on the part of the officials in not keeping a sufficient supply of timber at hand.

POWNELL C. - 1887 – 08/11/1887 – Age 15 – Hurrier. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal. Died 22nd Jan 1888.

POWNHALL Richard - 1884 – 02/07/1884 – Age 64 – Drawer. Strangeways Hall, Crompton and Shawcross, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased was injured by a small piece of top coal falling upon him, from the effects of which although considered slight at the time. He died on 30th August.

POWNING JM (injured) - 1881 – 03/01/1881 – Manager. Duneen Bay (metalliferous), Duneen Bay Mineral Co. Ltd., Clonakilty, Co. Cork, Ireland. Hurt by falling 20 feet down some sloping timber forming a covering called a penthouse at a level below which the shaft was being sunk.

POXON Charles - 1888 - 19/07/1888 – Age 39 – Stallman. Sandwell Park, Sandwell Park Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. A bump in a Thick Coal stall threw a piece of coal from the roof which broke the man's neck.

PRATT W. - 1883 - 15/11/1883 – Age 14 - Taker-off. Chell, Beswick Bros., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Jammed at bottom of jig by loaded tub.

PRATTEN Thomas - 1885 - 02/03/1885 – Age 40 – Hewer. Wellsway, Trustees of the Countess of Waldegrave, Somerset. Fall of roof. He was holing under the little vein coal the place was staved to within 5ft. of the face and well-timbered as he worked one prop stood at his head one at his back and one at his feet. His boy, who bad gone away for a few minutes, on returning him buried the top having cut off along the props at a slant over the coal which his holing had liberated.

PRATTEN Thomas - 1888 - 07/08/1888 – Age 48 – Collier. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof on the side of his stall road, when knocking out props from under it. He seems to have stood in the wrong place to knock them out.

PREECE James - 1884 - 08/11/1884 – Age 34 – Labourer. Pochin, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed.

PREECE John (injured) - 1883 - 15/05/1883 – Age 38 Miner. Snailbeach (metalliferous). Explosions of unseen remnants of dynamite from blows of a drilling machine on the rock near it. Odgers was killed. Hewitt had his right arm broken, knee cap splinters and has lost an eye. 44 weeks off. Rawson had a finger broken and was still unable to work March 1884. Preece was much cut about the head and face. 15 weeks off. 1 killed 4 injured.

PRENTICE James - 1881 - 14/12/1881 – Age 40 – Collier. Quarter No.7, Colin Dunlop and Co., Hamilton, Fife. The deceased and other three men were ascending the pit. The engineman did not stop the cage until it was about eight feet above the landing, and deceased, apparently alarmed, jumped on to the roof of the shed, which sloped towards the shaft, and he slid off into the shaft. The other three men remained on the cage and sustained no injury.
