PAYNE Thomas - 1886 – 21/10/1886 – Age 33 – Collier. Dodd’s Slope, Blaenavon Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of stone. He and two others after taking out two props tried to bar down some stone, they got down one end but the other would not come slips were visible in it but, nevertheless he went underneath it to move some rubbish and it fell upon him.

Driving a spout hole between two stalls he knowing that it was dangerous, got under some coal to hole it further, when it fell and crushed him.

PEARCE William - 1889 – 17/04/1889 – Age 62 – Tributer. Pendnandrea (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. Deceased who was a careful man, had been employed underground from a boy, was stopping with his comrade John Teague when a rock weighing from 15 cwts. to one ton came from a soapy joint in the hanging wall and fell on him, killing him on the spot. Both men had but a short time previously considered it quite safe. It was evidently a pure accident.

PENNINGTON James - 1882 - 06/01/1882 – Age 38 – Bricksetter. New Boston, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. When descending the shaft, he fell from the cage. He was subject to fits and it is supposed he had one on this occasion.
PENNINGTON James - 1883 - 31/12/1883 – Age 72 – Labourer. Bryn, Richard Evans and Co., Ashton, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was wheeling slack to the boilers and had to pass under a winding rope. When doing so it is supposed that he died from a fit but as a wound was found on the back of his neck the presumption is that he was struck by the rope which is about 5 feet from the ground and would sway when it was in motion.

PERCY George - 1883 - 18/06/1883 – Age 65 – Stoneman. Seaton Delaval, AE Burdon and Partners, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Fall of stone.
PERKIN Joshua - 1886 - 27/02/1886 – Age 51 – Lander. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Was working night core and whilst going from the landing brace to engine house by some means or other was caught by crank of whim engine and killed. How this happened, it is impossible to say, as the machinery was properly fenced, and the deceased had travelled the same road for years.
PERKINS Arthur - 1885 - 11/06/1885 – Age 20 – Carter. Mackintosh, Westbury Iron Co. Ltd., Somerset. He was tipping a cart of coal on the gug, the timber suddenly gave and he was partially buried, another fall occurred before could be got out and killed him. The coal here is nearly vertical it seems probable that the posts on the bottom gave way and caused the gug to fall in.

PERKINS John - 1881 - 15/12/1881 – Age 27 – Collier. John, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was building a pack when a stone fell from between the slips, knocking out the prop
which was under it. The place was well timbered.
PERKINS Thomas - 1883 - 18/11/1883 – Age 19 - Engineman. South Tolcarne (metalliferous), South Tolcarne Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. A horizontal engine is employed for working the pumps at one of the shafts. These suddenly stopped, when deceased was found quite dead, jammed in between the pinion and crown wheel. The machinery was securely fenced, but it appears the cutter, which holds down the top block, his coat was caught between the wheels and he was dragged in. If he had first stopped the engine this accident would not have happened.

PERRIS Fred - 1887 - 12/10/1887 – Age 14 - Door boy. Llwynapia, Glamorgan Coal Co., Llwynapia, Glamorgan. Fall of a bell-shaped stone in a heading. The heading was not double timber, but had props on each side of the road one of which was discharged by the fall. Long wall.

PERRY John (injured) - 1888 – Age 29 – Miner. Wheal Bassett (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. While employed in the 40 fathom level he slipped and fell into the bottoms between three and four fathoms and received a severe cut in the head. It occurred sometime in February.

PERRY Matthew Henry - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Age 17. Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas 68 killed.
PERRY W. - 1883 - 04/01/1883 – Age 35 – Labourer. Newbury, Westbury Iron Co., Newbury, Somerset. He was engaged in cleaning out the well of a coal washing machine and before getting out he shouted to the engineman to start the engine. His leg got caught in the elevator and broken and he died from the effects of the accident on the 10th.
PERRY W. - 1886 - 15/02/1886 – Age 19 - Train boy. West Riding, Pope and Pearson, Normanton, Yorkshire. Run over by corves.
PERRY William - 1889 - 27/04/1889 – Age 40 – Miner. Levant (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. The accident occurred on Saturday morning by the explosion of dynamite in a cross cut at the 210 fathom level. On the previous Thursday night four holes had been fired and the men heard four distinct reports. Later on the stuff was cleared and to all appearances each hole had torn a fair burden. On the Saturday morning however as deceased was poking for a new hole, an explosion occurred, inflicting such severe injuries to his hands, arms, and face that he died before the evening. The accident could only be accounted for by the supposition that a portion of dynamite was left about in the workings or that one of the four charges only partially exploded. The jury at the inquest returned a verdict of Accidental death and exonerated everyone from blame.
PERSHOUSE Joseph - 1882 - 02/06/1882 – Age 47 - Sinker Hamstead, Hamstead Colliery Co., Birmingham, Warwick. The engineman ran the descending bowk with great force into the bottom of the shaft, killed this man, and injured two others.

PETER Allen - 1882 - 28/04/1882 – Age 14 – Driver. Newbottle Dorothea, Earl of Durham, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Legs crushed between tubs and wall side. Was sitting on tub side. Died 27th May.
PETERS Absolom (injured) - 1889 - 06/11/1889 – Age 31 – Miner. Great Fortune (metalliferous), Helston, Cornwall. A stone fell from a rise and struck Peters on the back making a severe bruise but the injuries were not serious.
PETERS Edward - 1884 - 16/09/1884 – Age 50 – Collier. Harwarden, Harwarden Collieries Co. Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was told by the fireman, as they were leaving off work, to set a prop close to the face, and he was cleaning a place for it when a stone suddenly fell from a slip. The place appeared to be fairly well timbered.
PETERS Francis Henry (injured) - 1889 - 09/05/1889 – Age 30 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Peters was passing through the 400 fathom level when a piece of ground fell from the side of the level and broke his thigh. The ground was not timbered there not being the slightest suspicion of danger. The stone came out from a smooth head previously not discernible.
PETERS George - 1887 - 12/03/1887 – Age 18 – Dataller. Black Lake, Black Lake Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Died 13th May. Fatally crushed between a full tub and a tree. He had just lifted the tub upon the rails in a rising gradient when it ran back upon him.
PETERS John (injured) - 1889 - 03/07/1889 – Age 50 – Shaftsman. Prince of Wales (metalliferous), St. Mellion, Cornwall. The kibble rolled over the footwall in a winze, crushing Peters' leg and foot a little.
PETERS Samuel - 1883 - 20/01/1883 – Age 15 - Taker off. Maes-y-greg, George Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting his breakfast in the refuge place at the bottom of the incline, when he heard a tub descending. He ran out and was struck by the door which was thrown violently open. It appeared that the lad at the top had carelessly left a loaded tub on the plates without securing it and it ran away when his back was turned.

PHILIPS Andrew - 1889 - 12/07/1889 – Age 35 – Collier. Bwllfa GWH, Brogden, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (4ft. x 3ft. x 15ins. thick) 3yds from face of heading and from between timbers. Two Feet Nine Seam. Died 21st September.
PHILIPS David - 1888 - 12/09/1888 – Age 37 – Collier. Aberdare Works No.9, Aberdare Works and Collieries Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of bell-shaped stone from roof where he had knocked out middle prop to get train nearer face. 7ft. seam, Long wall.
PHILIPS James - 1883 - 26/10/1883 – Age 32 – Filler. North Wheal Busy (metalliferous), North Wheal Busy Mining Co., Blackwater Scorrier, Cornwall. Was engaged filling the kibble at the 15 fathom level to which the depth of the shaft is perpendicular, and is there sollared over. Just as the kibble reached the landing brace, the wire rope broke in the socket and the kibble fell down the shaft with about 20 feet of chain attached to it. Philips was found dead in the Platt with a wound in his head. It is supposed that he was struck by the socket at the end of the chain. No fault could he found with the arrangement of the Platt.

PHILLIPS James - 1888 – 30/11/1888 – Age 38 – Miner. No.9 (metalliferous), Cleator Iron Ore Co., Cleator, Cumberland. Suffocation by carbonic acid gas. The wood in a drift in No.6 pit having taken fire on the night of the 29th November, the fumes from the fire passed to No.9 pit which was an upcast shaft for No.6 pit. No notice having been sent to No.9 pit of the danger caused by the fire in No.6 pit the No.9 pit workmen descended the pit on the morning of the 30th November. John Mills while proceeding to his working place became unconscious and while attempting to rescue him, McAvoy and Phillips lost their lives. 3 killed.
