LIVESAY Peter - 1885 - 17/01/1885 – Age 34 – Metalman. Alexandra, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was drawing some props and bars preparatory to firing a shot in the roof and through over-confidence in the condition of the roof was caught by a stone which fell before he could get away.

LIVINGSTON Duncan - 1888 - 21/06/1888 – Age 70 - Hutch mender. Garriongill, Coltness Iron Co., Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire. Another waggon ran against one he was in and he was crushed at the screens.

LIVINGSTONE George - 1889 - 05/09/1889 – Age 45 – Miner. Pencuick, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Suffocation by smoke. 63 killed.

LLEWELLYN Abraham - 1885 - 08/09/1885 – Age 28 – Stoker. No.5 Victoria, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Got into a steam boiler before it was cold and swallowed some steam.

LLEWELLYN Daniel - 1889 - 22/08/1889 – Age 37 – Collier. Graigola Hill’s Merthyr, Graigola Merthyr Co. Ltd., Swansea, Glamorgan. Roof (rock) broke down in a level 8yds. wide, which was timbered on each side of road and had some additional side props. Fall extended across the place and 12yds. back Graigola seam, 5.5ft. thick. Pillar and stall.

LLEWELLYN William - 1885 – 14/01/1885 – Age 24 – Collier. Wingfield, Wingfield Colliery Co., Glamorganshire. Fall of stone. He had two props and a spragg under the coal which he was holding when a heavy fall of top occurred owing to a slip over the coal which was invisible, letting off the stone and knocking out the timber.

LLEWLLYN William - 1886 – 16/02/1886 – Age 34 – Collier. Ferndale No.5, David Davies and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of clod and stone from place of stall.

LLOYD Alfred (injured) - 1886 – 24/08/1886 – Age 34 – Prop taker. Victoria 7 Feet, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Ankle broken by an escaped tub in a gig brow. His foot slipped as he was getting out of the way. A pin came out of a shackle and allowed the tub to run down.

LLOYD David (injured) - 1885 – 13/02/1885 – Age 20 – Rockman. Conglog (slate). Unexpected fall of rock from the face of his bargain. Leg cut. 11 weeks off.

LLOYD David - 1880 – 10/12/1880 – Age 70. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 101 killed.

LLOYD David - 1883 – 04/06/1883 – Age 38 – Repairer. Abercwmboy, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LLOYD David - 1889 – 08/06/1889 – Age 23 – Repairer. South Wales No.2, Lancaster Spier and Co., Cwmtillery, Monmouth. The cage having been overwound they jumped out while it was hanging in the headstocks by the detaching hooks on, reaching the ground they fell back into the shafts, the other six men who remained in the cage escaped uninjured. 2 killed.

LLOYD Evan (injured) - 1882 – 19/07/1882 – Age 23 – Labourer. Oakley Middle (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. A block of slate fell from a sled while he was trying to push it to its proper position with a crow bar and injured his knee. 5 weeks and 2 days off.

LLOYD Evan - 1885 – 08/06/1885 – Age 21 – Rockman. Rhiwbach (slate). Premature explosion of a charge of gunpowder which threw him down the face of the open quarry. The charge of two and a half pounds had been placed in a crack and he was using a straw and not safety fuse. There was evidence to show that he was employing too small a piece of touch paper.

LLOYD George - 1889 - 23/10/1889 – Age 50 – Cogger. Great Fenton, Staffordshire Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Stoke, Staffordshire. Fall of top coal while he was getting stones from waste to build a pack.

LLOYD Griffith (injured) - 1886 - 19/03/1886 – Age 20 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). He broke his ankle while endeavouring to put back a loaded waggon which had got off the rails. Eight and a half weeks off.

LLOYD Isaac (injured) - 1881 - 19/04/1881 – Age 19 - Domestic servant. Great Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith. While assisting in changing a bucket, he was struck by the chain which ran off the winch, owing to want of care on the care of the men who were working it. 1 week off.

LLOYD J. (injured) - 1883 - 14/08/1883 – Age 12 – Boy. Mosley Common, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Tipper.

LLOYD J. - 1883 - 29/06/1883 – Age 44 – Carpenter. Sun, J and W Stone, Monmouthshire. Crushed between buffers of loaded coal waggons.

LLOYD James - 1884 - 28/07/1884 – Age 24 – Haulier. South Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Kicked by a horse.

LLOYD Jesse - 1888 - 05/04/1888 – Age 27 – Loader. Saltwells, Earl of Dudley, Cradley Heath, Worcester. Fatally injured by fall of coal from side of a Thick Coal pillar. Cause, slips at an obtuse angle.

LLOYD John (injured) - 1883 - 04/08/1883 – Miner. Mid Park (metalliferous). On the 3rd August two men fired four holes charged with dynamite in a level and heard four reports one weaker than the rest. Jones and Lloyd the next day found that one of the holes had not done its work properly. They picked out all the tamping they could with an iron rod and proceeded to bore out the remainder with a drill and hammer. While so employed an explosion took place, Jones’ right hand was blown off and Lloyd bruised. Jones 4 months off Lloyd 4 weeks.

LLOYD John (injured) - 1885 - 12/08/1885 – Age 16 - Slate maker. Conglog (slate). He was caught by the belt of a sawing table while shifting it with his arm from the loose to the fast pulley. 2 weeks off.

LLOYD John - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 40. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas 101 killed.

LLOYD John - 1880 - 11/09/1880 – Age 39 – Collier. No. 2 Clynmil, The Aberdare and Plymouth Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of roof. 2 killed.

LLOYD John - 1882 - 25/08/1882 – Age 44 – Shaftsman. Parry’s (metalliferous), Halkin, Flint. Fall of jog or struddle 8 feet above him while engaged in sinking a shaft in loose ground.

LLOYD John - 1884 - 04/12/1884 – Age 33 – Collier. Cwmneol, Powell Duffryn Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Knocked out of carriage.

LLOYD John - 1884 – 15/05/1884 – Age 67 – Miner. Great Holway (metalliferous). He fell 7 feet in some stopes and received scalp wounds. Five and a half weeks off.

LLOYD John - 1888 – 04/06/1888 – Age 40 – Engine driver. Aston Hall, Aston Hall Colliery Co., Queens Ferry, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was bringing some loaded trucks down to the main line the engine being in front. About 400 yards from the points, he uncoupled his engine and ran forward the waggons following by themselves and they would then be turned into the aiding by the brakesman. Deceased noticed however that the points leading into a blind siding were open, and he sent the brakesman on to close these to allow the engine to run along the straight road, whilst he jumped off and turned the points for the waggons to go into the siding. He then ran back to his engine which had just cleared the crossing and was caught by the waggons as he was climbing up. This fly shunting has since been done away with, the engine coming down the bank in the rear of the waggons.

LLOYD Joseph (injured) - 1888 – 20/08/1888 – Age 38 – Miner. Chequerbent No.1, Three Quarters Hulton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Scalp wound by a piece of coal which fell from the ascending cage and struck him when standing at the bottom of the shaft.

LLOYD Noah - 1885 – 02/07/1885 – Age 20 – Horse driver. Dorrington, Lilleshall Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Entangled in rope and drawn over top of drum.

LLOYD Owen (injured) - 1885 – 05/10/1885 – Age 45 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). While he was loading a waggon a small block slipped off and struck his leg. 16 days off.

LLOYD Peter (injured) - 1889 – 07/09/1889 – Age 60 – Labourer. Moel Ispri No.2 (metalliferous). He and two other men were riding along an almost level tramway on a small trolley; while going at a rapid speed on a curve his foot caught the ground and the trolley ran against his leg breaking both bones above the ankle. Still disabled Feb. 1890.

LLOYD Rees (injured) - 1881 - 10/06/1881 – Age 68 – Tipman. Oakeley Upper (slate), Festiniog. As he was driving along a truck a piece of stone fell from it onto his leg. 4 weeks off.

LLOYD Robert - 1880 - 03/08/1880 – Age 39 - Hooker on. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Explosion of gas. 9 killed.

LLOYD Robert - 1880 - 15/04/1880 – Age 48 – Collier. Dee Side, Dee Side Colliery Co., Queen’s Ferry, Flint. Fall of roof from between three slips.

LLOYD Roger - 1883 - 21/07/1883 – Age 35 – Shaftsman. Pennant (metalliferous). He was working on a swing stage in a shaft about 30 feet from the surface, nailing casing planks. A plank was lowered to him and he marked the place where it had been sawn without taking it out of the rope. While being pulled up it struck the side of the shaft and fell out of the rope on to the stage, causing Lloyd to fall down the shaft.

LLOYD Thomas - 1886 - 29/01/1886 – Age 46 – Stallman. Hope, Wilkinson and Gittings, Pelsall, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from working face when drawing sprags. Cause two slips at right angles.

LLOYD W. - 1882 - 24/10/1882 – Age 12 – Boy. Madeley Wood, Messrs Anstice and Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

LLOYD William - 1884 - 19/05/1884 – Age 16 - Screen boy. Clay Cross No.9, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Killed by machinery on screens.

LLOYD William - 1888 - 16/02/1888 – Age 19 – Trammer. Oakley (slate). In contravention of the rules of the mine they trammed three loaded waggons on to a bridge which only one was allowed to pass at a time. The bridge broke and they fell 60 feet and were killed. 5 killed.

LOADER George - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 22 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

LOBB Peter - 1887 - 13/04/1887 – Age 51 – Dataler. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made and inquest attended Instead of coming out from his work by the travelling road he came up the endless rope road and in endeavouring to pass a full tub was caught by the empties which were travelling at the rate of a mile an hour.

LOBLEY Thomas - 1882 - 23/02/1882 – Age 17 – Driver. Huntcliffe (ironstone), Bell Bros Ltd., Saltburn, Yorkshire. Horse lifted him off his feet then he fell and was run over by tubs.

LOCHRIE William (non-fatal) - 1889 - 19/08/1889 – Drawer. Hallside, James Dunlop and Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Injured by being thrown off race on self-acting incline while riding on it.

LOCK John - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 50 – Driver. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

LOCKER John William (injured) - 1886 - 18/09/1886 – Age 14 - Taker off. Bradford Four Feet, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Thigh broken by empty tub running against him at bottom of a gig brow. An obstruction had stopped the gigging, and on starting again the full tub came in contact with dirt which caused a jerk that unhooked the empty tub and it ran back and caught him as he was waiting inattentively.

LOCKET William - 1883 - 20/01/1883 – Age 41 - Clay teamer. Burnopfield, J Bowes and Partners, Burnopfield, Co. Durham. Crushed by cage at top of shaft.

LOCKETH Thomas - 1884 - 25/02/1884 – Age 38 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Severe injury to head and spine by fall of stone, while baring. Died 13th May.

LOCKETT J. - 1882 - 10/10/1882 – Age 22 – Collier. Silverdale, Butterley Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

LOCKETT W. - 1888 - 22/09/1888 – Age 36 – Collier. Leycett, Madeley Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Run over by train of tubs.

LOCKHART Hugh (non-fatal) - 1886 - 05/10/1886 – Collier. Gartsherrie No.1, Gartsherrie Coal Co., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

LOCKHART John - 1888 - 01/06/1888 – Age 53 – Branchman. Choppington, Bebside Coal Co., Choppington, Northumberland. Crushed between truck and waggon in uncoupling.

LOCKHART Thomas - 1882 - 18/09/1882 – Age 26 – Collier. Common, Eglington Iron Co., Lugar, Ayrshire. Fall of coal at face.

LOCKLEY Henry - 1886 - 07/05/1886 – Age 35 – Loader. Hamstead, Hamstead Colliery Co., Great Barr, Staffordshire. Died 21st May. A piece of coal which was on a heap, 14 feet high, rolled down and crushed him against a tub.

LOCKLEY Joseph - 1881 - 30/12/1881 – Age 34 – Pikeman. Powk Hill, Taylor and Hartshorne, Walsall, Staffordshire. Fall of coal roof in a well-timbered working face. Caused by unseen slip.

LOCKSTONE James - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 27 – Labourer. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

LOCKWOOD G. - 1886 - 16/01/1886 – Age 22 – Collier. Old Flockton, Milnes Stansfield and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

LOCKWOOD George - 1884 - 01/01/1884 – Age 19 – Engineman. Dark Lane, Mirfield Coal Co., Mirfield, Yorkshire. His clothes caught in a wheel and he was drawn over a fly wheel shaft.

LOCKWOOD T. - 1884 - 08/01/1884 – Age 29 – Miner. Broomfield (metalliferous), Lees and Cliffe, Brighouse, Yorkshire. Was raising a crane with blocks when a balk fell and broke the ladder on which he was standing and he fell to the ground. Died 26th Jan.

LODEY or LOWDEY Thomas - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 48. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

LODGE William - 1881 - 22/10/1881 – Age 45 – Driver. Bradley, C Kidson, Bilston, Staffordshire. Whilst improperly lowering a tub down incline road his foot got fast, the tub seriously injured him 21st. Died this day.

LODOVICK David - 1880 - 10/12/1880 - Age 45. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas, 101 killed.

LOFTHOUSE J. - 1885 - 28/02/1885 – Age 40 – Collier. Wharncliffe Silkstone, Wharncliffe Silkstone Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 5th Mar.

LOFTHOUSE Joseph - 1881 - 28/05/1881 – Age 42 – Engineman. Oakenshaw, Hird Dawson and Hardy, Bradford, Yorkshire. Crushed by crank of pumping engine.

LOGAN Gilbert (non-fatal) - 1889 - 20/04/1889 – Miner. Drummuir No.5, Merry and Cunninghame, Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at brushing face.

LOMAS James (injured) - 1889 - 13/09/1889 – Age 50 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Injured in riding down the engine brow, the tub waggons having become uncoupled by colliding with part of the ascending train, which had left the other line of rails. Inspection. 2 killed.

LOMAS James - 1887 - 05/10/1887 – Age 16 – Drawer. Spindlepoint, Cannel Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Head and back injured by fall of roof from which he was moving away.

LOMAX Elias - 1883 - 15/01/1883 – Age 13 – Drawer. Fir Tree House, Crompton and Shawcross, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. In getting out of the cage, at a mouthing, 35 yards from the bottom the deceased slipped and fell down the pit. The cages passed the mouthing at a distance of 1 foot from the landing plates. When it was necessary for men to get on or off the cage a door was lowed to cover the space between the landing and cage. This door had just been repaired and as it took a little longer time than usual, to put it into position, the men on the cage became impatient and started to leave it. Two men got off safely but the deceased, who followed, missed his footing and fell down the pit. The manager undertook to alter the arrangements with a view to increased safety.

LOMAX S. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 59 – Deputy. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

LOMAX William A. (injured) - 1889 - 07/08/1889 – Age 15 - Ginney tenter. Towneley Demesne, Arley Brooks and Pickup, Lancashire. Thigh broken by falling from a tram on which a person, aged 20, was riding with him, the person having fallen off and the tram run away. Inspection and inquiry.

LONACRE William - 1882 - 21/01/1882 – Age 39 – Stallman. Shirland, Benton and Woodiwiss, Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof while trying to knock out a prop with a hammer instead of using a ringer and chain. Injured 21st. December 1881.

LONG Daniel (injured) - 1889 - 02/12/1889 – Age 29 - Bank rider. Victoria 7 Foot, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Injured tubs on the carriage in a balance brow he having omitted to put up the catch. Inspection inquiry.

LONG R.B. - 1888 - 20/08/1888 – Age 36 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Leg broken and severe injuries to head and back by fall of roof. Died 18th Sept.

LONG Samuel - 1886 - 19/02/1886 – Age 40 – Hewer. Eston, Leonard Boult and Co., Gloucester. Killed by explosion of firedamp. 8 killed.

LONG Walter - 1881 - 07/02/1881 – Age 32 – Horsedriver. Pelton, Lord Dunsay and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Engaged taking trucks from incline to screens, when he got his foot fast in switch and was run over on his leg and arm which caused such injuries that he died from shock.

LONG William - 1883 - 19/08/1883 – Age 20 – Fitter. Seaton Delaval, AR Burdon and Partners, Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Fell down shaft owing to breakage of rope. 2 killed.

LONGDEN E. - 1887 - 09/04/1887 – Age 32 – Timekeeper. Park Hill, Victoria Coal and Coke Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Brick fell on him from fan chimney in course of erecting. Died 10th Apr.

LONGSTAFF Thomas - 1887 - 02/04/1887 – Age 19 – Putter. Westerton, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. Reported to have sprained himself internally. The doctor, on making a post mortem, said the cause of death was inflammation of the brain. Not comprised.

LONGWORTH Abraham - 1883 - 09/02/1883 – Age 30 - Hooker-on. Lenham Green, Trustees of William Hancock, Buckley, Flint Inspection made and inquest attended. He was hooking on at a mouthing half way up the pit, and he carelessly ran a tub into the shaft when the cage was at bank and in attempting to stop it fell with it to the bottom. He had neglected to shut the gate when the cage ascended otherwise this accident could not have happened.

LORD Lawrence - 1888 - 21/02/1888 – Age 36 – Miner. Stacksteads, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Fatally hurt by roof falling in his place as he was getting coal. Died at the Infirmary March 4.

LORD William (injured) - 1880 - 29/04/1880 – Age 30 – Miner. Nook, Broad Oak Colliery Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Thigh broken. Caught by a tub. The coupling chain attached to the winding rope on engine brow broke.  It gave way at a weld.

LORD William - 1888 - 25/07/1888 – Age 19 - Bank rider. Robin Hood Rams, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatally injured by falling off the coupling chain on which he was riding in front of a tub in the engine brow. A tub to be used in future for gangriders to ride on. Died at Monsall Hospital, October 18th.

LOVELL Oliver - 1887 - 01/03/1887 – Age 40 – Collier. Abercarn, Abercarn Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. Fall of coal. He was walking down the face with a basket of coal, when a lump from the face fell upon him. It came from one of the natural slips this seam is liable to. A sprag might have saved it.

LOW John - 1886 - 01/05/1886 – Age 45 – Dataler. Low Hall, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased, with others, was engaged in building a pack and foolishly removed two props which he said were in his way, without setting others. He had been distinctly told by the chargeman not to touch the props.

LOW Miles (injured) - 1888 - 21/06/1888 – Age 32 – Labourer. Greenleach Stone Mine (metalliferous), JP Entwistle, Lancashire. Finger crushed between a bar and a stone, the bar with which another man was lifting the stone having slipped.

LOWDEY or LODEY Thomas - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 48. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

LOWE Benjamin - 1884 - 10/09/1884 – Age 57 – Metalman. New Boston, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was a chargeman well accustomed to the work and frequent examinations had been made of the roof both by himself and others shortly before the fall, and it was considered quite safe.

KNOWLES William - 1887 - 26/05/1887 – Age 43 – Collier. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was finishing a pillar when a stone fell from between slips. The seam was thick requiring nine-feet props which were set about two feet apart.

LOWE Robert - 1889 - 28/03/1889 – Age 41 – Collier. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He went on holing, whilst his drawer went for a sprag, when there was a sudden fall of rock, from what is locally known as it bristle, which crushed down some of the coal from the face.

LOWREY or LOWERIE George - 1885 - 03/06/1885 – Hewer. Newbottle, Margaret, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Killed in Maudlin Seam by an eruption of water and gas. 13 killed. Left a wife and 3 children.

LOWRIE James - 1885 - 05/09/1885 – Age 17 – Trimmer. Clyde No.2, James Dunlop and Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. Was caught between a loaded and an empty waggon.

LOWRY Philip - 1882 - 23/11/1882 – Age 24 Miner. Wieham (metalliferous), Wieham Mining Co., Cumberland. Fall of ore. 3 killed.

LOWTHER Robert - 1880 - 04/06/1880 – Age 19 - Branch driver. Castle Eden, Johnson and Reay, Castle Eden, Co. Durham. Leg broken while attempting to get on waggons which were being shunted by locomotive, he fell and was run over. Died 16th June.

LOWTON John - 1884 - 16/01/1884 – Age 24 – Collier. Saw Mill, Ince Hall Coal & Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was getting out a pillar, and had his place timbered fairly well. Having holed his coal up to a slip it gave way and fell together with a large quantity of roof, which capped four bars and four props.

LUCAS Edward - 1887 - 03/12/1887 – Metalman. Giants Hall, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was cutting room for a bar in the side of a tunnel where the roof was bad when a stone suddenly fell out from between some slips.

LUGG Robert - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 40 - Bottom cutter. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

LUKE John - 1886 - 02/12/1886 – Age 38 – Stoneman. Elemore, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Explosion, 28 killed. Buried in the Churchyard of St. Michael and All Angels Lyons.

LUKE Thomas (injured) - 1889 - 04/06/1889 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. The main engine rod broke at the 190 fathom level and the men, as a result, fell a few feet by which they sustained some slight injuries. As other accidents had recently occurred at this mine from similar causes, I wrote to the manager suggesting that a little more scrutiny on the part of the man responsible for keeping the man engine in good repair might possibly prevent some accidents. Captain Thomas replied that he would appoint a successor to the man in charge of this work although he doubted if it were possible to display more vigilance in inspecting the man engines that had been shown in the past. 4 injured.

LUMLEY John - 1889 - 18/03/1889 – Age 46 – Labourer. Grinkle, Palmers Co. Ltd., Port Mulgrave, Co. Durham. While going from his work he was getting out of the tub on a tramway while in motion. He fell and was run over.

LUMLEY Richard (injured) - 1881 - 23/08/1881 – Age 53 – Miner. Bryneglwys (slate), Aberynolwyn. He was climbing down a steep pathway by a chain carrying tools in his hand, when he suddenly became giddy and faint and rolled down to the bottom a distance of 10 yards. Arm dislocated. 3 weeks off.

LUMSDEN Thomas - 1884 - 18/11/1884 – Age 68 – Screener. Moorsley, North Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Fell off the top of a waggon while trimming it and fell on his head.

LUNDIE Bernard (non-fatal) - 1886 - 12/07/1886 - Pony driver. Rosehall No.5, Robert Addie and Sons, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Injured by hutch when jumping off it.

LUNN William - 1889 - 07/01/1889 – Age 19 – Driver. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. Died Jan. 9th. An empty tub had left the rails and when deceased was trying to lift it upon them the horse started and drew the tub over him.

LUNT William - 1887 - 17/01/1887 – Age 53 – Stoneman. Lea Green, Mrs FP Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was very deaf. After lighting a shot and going to a safe place he appears to have thought he heard the shot go off and returned to the place, just as the shot exploded, he was struck by the stones from the shot.

Engaged boring against some old drowned workings when they holed the water did not come as they expected, they commenced working rods in the hole when some sulphured hydrogen gas came off and overpowered them before they could be got out they died. 2 killed.
