LEIVERS Joseph - 1887 - 25/09/1887 – Age 42 – Stallman. Watnall, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof.

LEIVESLEY Joseph - 1883 - 02/05/1883 – Age 58 – Stallman. Renishaw Park No.2, J and G Wells Ltd., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of bind while preparing to set timber to support the roof.

LESLIE James (non-fatal) - 1887 - 17/11/1887 – Roadsman. Holmes No.3, John Horne and Sons, Hurlford, Ayrshire. Fall of coal and stone.

LESLIE Thomas - 1889 - 04/05/1889 – Age 6 - School boy. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Run over by a set of waggons while trespassing on the Seaham private railway. Not comprised under the Act.

LESTER William - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 19 – Haulier. Risca, Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

LETCHER John - 1888 - 21/12/1888 – Age 48 – Miner. Arnold (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co., Hodbarrow, Lancashire. Struck by plank which fell down a rise. Deceased sent this plank up the rise and lashed the rope once round instead of twice when near the top of the rise the rope slipped off the plank which fell on the deceased who was standing in the bottom of the rise. This accident was caused by his own negligence as it is against the rules to stand at the bottom of a rise while anything was being sent up.

LETHBRIDGE George - 1882 - 16/10/1882 – Age 26 – Miner. Nook, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Astley, Lancashire. Roof in main engine plane level as he was passing.

LEVER John - 1887 - 07/04/1887 – Age 47 – Dayman. Manor, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof stone at the top of a ginny brow. It fell from between two unseen slips and broke off at a prop which he himself had set.

LEVER Peter - 1884 - 24/03/1884 – Age 14 – Drawer. Hindley Green, J Scowcroft and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspected and attended inquest. The collier was drawing the sprags from the top coals whilst deceased held a light for him. As he knocked out the last sprag his pick fell out of his hand, under the coals, and the lad stooped down to pick it up. The collier sprang forward to pull him away, but he was too late, as the coals fell at the same moment knocking both down and killing Peter.

LEVER Will - 1887 - 14/12/1887 – Age 50 – Stoker. Pelsall, Pelsall Coal and Iron Co., Pelsall, Staffordshire. Explosion of steam boiler on surface. 3 killed.

LEVINGTON Enos - 1880 - 17/11/1880 – Age 12 - Door boy. Digby, Digby Colliery Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Runaway train caught deceased whilst opening his door.

LEWENS Martin - 1888 - 02/02/1888 – Age 21 – Hewer. Saint Hilda, Harton Coal Co., Durham. Roof stone fell in jud.

LEWES Edward - 1885 - 02/03/1885 – Age 21 – Haulier. South Wales, South Wales Colliery Co Ltd., Monmouthshire. Injured by a tram and died the next day. He was riding on the front of a tram when the pin came out, the jerk threw him off and he was-run over.

LEWIS Alfred - 1886 - 19/01/1886 – Age 19 – Stricker. Abersychan, Abersychan Elled Steam and House Coal Co., Monmouth. Run over by a railway truck. Extra help being required he was assisting in moving the waggons under the screens with a horse. Taking the chain traces off the coupling he dropped them they twisted round his leg and he was thrown under the wheels.

LEWIS Benjamin - 1889 - 03/09/1889 – Age 24 - Hooker on. Oakeley (slate). While crossing an incline for the purpose of riding up on a loaded waggon to the next floor, in contravention of the Special Rules, he was struck by an empty sled which was coming down a parallel line on rails. He had been warned that the sled was coming down but the top of the incline was so smoky that he did not see it.

LEWIS D. - 1889 - 13/07/1889 – Age 65 – Byeworker. Kiveton Park, Kiveton Park Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of side.

LEWIS Dan - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 47 – Collier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

LEWIS Daniel - 1881 - 28/11/1881 – Age 44 – Collier. Glyncorrwg, Glyncorrwg Colliery Co., Glyncorrwg, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS David (injured) - 1883 - 24/01/1883 – Age 68 – Miner. Talargoch (metalliferous). Fall of s small piece of the hanging wall in a tribute pitch where he continued to work in spite of the warnings of his partner. The stone dropped on to the ladder on which he was standing and caused him to fall 3 or 4 yards. Two or three ribs broken. Still unable to work March 1884.

LEWIS David (injured) - 1885 - 19/03/1885 – Age 49 - Slate sawyer. Braichgoch (slate). Toe bruised by the spur-wheel of a sawing table. 7 weeks off.

LEWIS David (injured) - 1886 - 14/05/1886 – Age 46 – Miner. Frongoch (metalliferous). Fall of four or five yards in some stopes. Head cut, back bruised. Four and a half weeks off.

LEWIS David (injured) - 1889 - 26/11/1889 – Age 24 – Rockman. Oakeley (slate). Lewis fired a hole which pillared the slate rock without bringing down the block. After waiting some time, he returned to the hole and examined it, he considered there was no fire remaining and commenced pouring gunpowder into it for a new charge. This powder took fire probably from some smouldering remnants of the fuse and Lewis was slightly burnt. 3 weeks off.

LEWIS David - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 43. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas, 101 killed.

LEWIS David - 1880 - 31/08/1880 – Age 56 – Mason. Penydarren No.2, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Falling out of pit carriage when in motion.

LEWIS David - 1883 - 05/07/1883 – Age 25 – Labourer. Ferndale No.1, D Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS David - 1884 - 15/05/1884 – Age 28 – Miner. Cwmorthin (slate). He was using a bar to remove some loose, dangerous roof standing underneath it instead of at a higher level, as advised by the manager 20 minutes before the accident. A large stone fell upon him and inflicted fatal injuries.

LEWIS David - 1885 – 23/12/1885 – Age 40 – Collier. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

LEWIS David C. - 1886 – 02/02/1886 – Age 18 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof which took place while he was setting timber.

LEWIS Edward (injured) - 1886 – 11/01/1886 – Age 29 – Rockman. Bryneglwys (slate). A stone slipped down a heap of rubbish and struck his leg. 5 weeks off.

LEWIS Edward - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 42. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas 101 killed.

LEWIS Edward - 1881 - 16/12/1881 – Age 58 – Dataller. Westminster, Westminster and Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was preparing to set a bar to replace another which was giving way when the latter broke letting down the roof on him.

LEWIS Edward - 1885 - 06/10/1885 – Age 25 - Hewer. Ashington, Ashington Coal Co., Ashington, Northumberland. Fall of stone in broken lift.

LEWIS Edward - 1888 - 21/06/1888 – Age 57 – Blower. Hatherton (metalliferous), E Crapper and Co., Walsall, Staffordshire. Piece of rock, shaken by shot, rolled from the side of a limestone stall upon this man, causing his death on July 18.

LEWIS Edwin - 1882 - 08/04/1882 – Age 25 – Labourer. Bryneglwys (slate), Towyn, Merioneth. Another man’s powder can, containing 3lbs. of powder, tumbled down on to the pile of rubbish which he was clearing away, and the top came off. Lewis went to pick up the canister when a spark fell from his candle and set fire to the powder. Face burnt. 17 days off.

LEWIS Elijah - 1886 - 16/06/1886 – Age 33 – Roadman. Rock, J Vipond and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Run over by trams. He had been clearing some rubbish on the road and intended to run down in front of the trams but they got uncoupled from the rope and overtook him.

LEWIS Evan - 1881 - 26/06/1881 – Age 25 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate), Festiniog. He had been clearing away loose stuff from the top of his bargain, and was on his way out when he fell over the edge and was killed. There was no path way or tram road, and no infringement of the Special Rules for not having the place fenced.

LEWIS George - 1888 - 20/12/1888 – Age 20 – Collier. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of cliff roof, 6ft.x 4ft.x 20ins. thick, from between a slip at the face and a break behind. He was aware the stone was heavy, and was about to stand a prop, when the stone fell. 4ft. seam longwall.

LEWIS Griffith William - 1883 - 14/06/1883 – Age 28 – Rockman. Crown (slate). Two holes were charged with potentite or Liverpool cotton powder and fired on the afternoon of the 13th June. On the following morning Lewis found that one of the holes had not exploded. While he was working on the ground close to it with a pick it went off and killed him.

LEWIS H. - 1887 - 21/01/1887 – Age 40 – Collier. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of side.

LEWIS Henry - 1882 - 09/01/1882 – Age 32 - Day fireman. Ferndale No.1, D Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Stuck by a journey of full trams.

LEWIS Henry - 1884 - 26/07/1884 – Age 50 – Stoker. Llangennech, Llangennech Coal Co. Ltd., Llanelly, Camarthen. Fall of stone on surface.

LEWIS Henry - 1889 - 12/01/1889 – Age 75 - Surface labourer. Lower Deep, John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Blaina, Monmouth. Whilst standing near a fire, warming himself, he appeared to have been knocked down by trucks which were being placed under the screens for loading. Some persons suggested that death was purely from natural causes but I consider it an accident under the Mines Act.

LEWIS Herbert (injured) - 1885 - 09/06/1885 – Miner. Crumbuke Day Eye, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Crushed. by tubs in a gig brow. In his hurry to hook a waggon to the set which was being gigged past an intermediate level on which he worked he missed doing so and the tub ran down the brow, he held on to it as long as he could trying to stop it, and forgetting that he had called to the gigger to go on, he was unable to get out of the way of the other tubs which followed. His own mistake.

LEWIS Hugh (injured) - 1884 - 04/04/1884 – Age 50 – Miner. Frongoch (metalliferous). He was coming down from his stope, by a chain over a sloping piece of ground, when he became faint or giddy, and losing his hold of the chain rolled down the slope and fell over a precipice. Skull fractured. 6 months off.

LEWIS J. - 1881 - 14/02/1881 – Age 56 – Collier. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Co., Glamorgan. Some clod he was pulling down knocked out some timber and in trying to escape he was crushed against a tram.

LEWIS J. - 1883 - 19/11/1883 – Age 26 – Haulier. Cwm, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS J. - 1885 - 06/03/1885 – Owner. Crossing Lane, J Lewis, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

LEWIS J.R. - 1881 - 16/07/1881 – Age 18 – Collier. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone. When pulling down some coal a stone fell from a slant in the top.

LEWIS James - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 15. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas 101 killed.

LEWIS James - 1883 – 30/07/1883 – Age 38 – Timberman. Cilely, Great Western Railway Co., Llantrissant, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS James - 1884 – 24/01/1884 – Age 74 – Block layer. Oakwood, Cwmavon Estate and House Co., Cwmavon, Glamorgan. Breaking of rope.

LEWIS James - 1887 - 22/04/1887 – Age 27 – Collier. Farrington, Farrington Colliery Co., Radstock, Somerset. Fell out of the cage. He and another man were coming up the pit together and he fell out. The cage got out of the guides but it is uncertain whether his falling knocked the cage out or the cage leaving the guides caused him to fall.

LEWIS James - 1889 - 06/09/1889 – Age 38 – Collier. No.17, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of roof.

LEWIS James H. - 1882 - 11/02/1882 – Age 16 – Collier. Lewis Merthyr, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by an explosion of firedamp. 4 killed.

LEWIS John (injured) - 1886 - 11/03/1886 – Age 45 – Miner. Lisburne (metalliferous). Fall of loose ground while he was engaged in removing it after a blast. 2 weeks off.

LEWIS John - 1882 - 08/03/1882 – Age 18 – Collier. Maesteg No.11, Llynvi and Tondu Coal and Iron Co., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Run over by a full tram.

LEWIS John - 1886 - 08/06/1886 – Age 30 – Collier. Hills Merthyr, Graigola Merthyr Co. Ltd., Clydach, Glamorgan. Killed by a fall of stone in his own stall.

LEWIS John - 1886 - 23/06/1886 – Age 14 - Collier boy. Fforchaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Cwmaman, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

LEWIS John - 1886 - 28/08/1886 – Age 35 – Miner. Oakeley Upper (slate). He was driving a level southwards and his partner was driving northwards to meet him. The barrier, on the day of the accident was only 1 or 4 feet across. His partner signalled to him by hammering that he was going to blast and Lewis replied in the same way. The hole was fired and broke through the barrier, killing Lewis, who for some unaccountable reason, had not retired but had continued going on with his work.

LEWIS John - 1887 - 01/06/1887 – Age 15 – Collier. Clay Level, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale Monmouth. He and his brother were working together under the direction of their father, a collier of 30 years' experience. Suddenly the top, which was well timbered, fell killing one and injuring the other.

LEWIS John - 1887 - 10/01/1887 – Age 26 – Collier. Henllis, Patent Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Cwmbran, Monmouth. Fall of coal at the face. A large piece of coal had been standing on three spraggs from the Friday to Monday. He knocked out the spraggs, and then went under the coal and began holing when naturally it fell. Both the overman and a collier near had cautioned him about the risk he was running.

LEWIS John - 1887 - 10/08/1887 – Age 52 – Roadsman. Gadlys Waynes, Merthyr Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Crushed by haulage sheave at end of engine lane. It was not ascertained how he got entangled. The sheave was unfenced at the time.

LEWIS John - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 32 – Collier. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.

LEWIS John - 1888 - 24/01/1888 – Age 65 – Collier. Dinas Isha Ely, Rhondda Colliery Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face while holing the coal. He was turning a place off a stall road which was ripped, and had failed to secure the stone as he had been warned to do, No.2 Rhondda seam, 3ft 6ins. thick. Pillar and stall.

LEWIS John - 1888 - 26/09/1888 – Age 26 – Collier. Cwmdare, Powells Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Struck by stones from a shot having apparently approached it thinking it had missed fire.

LEWIS John - 1889 - 16/01/1889 – Age 43 – Timberman. Plymouth Abercanaid, Plymouth Works Proprietors, Merthyr, Glamorgan. In knocking out some wedges between a setting of timber in the roof which was about to take down the collar swung round and struck him on the back against a tram. Died 1st December.

LEWIS Joseph - 1881 - 11/10/1881 – Age 19 – Collier. Trimsharan, Trimsharan Colliery Co., Kidwelly, Carmarthen. Fall of roof.

LEWIS Joshua - 1880 - 26/06/1880 – Age 26 – Collier. Harris Navigation, Harris Navigation Coal Co., Quakers Yard, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS Lewis (injured) - 1883 - 13/07/1883 – Age 32 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). Fall of part of the block which he was in the act of removing.

LEWIS Lewis - 1886 - 08/03/1886 – Age 60 – Carter. South Buckley, North & South Buckley Colliery Brick & Tile Co. Ltd., Buckley, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was lowering two empty waggons down to the screens and was trying to stop them when he was crushed against another waggon which was not quite clear of the crossing and which he himself had previously lowered.

LEWIS Lewis - 1888 - 05/04/1888 – Age 51 - Smith’s helper. Victoria No.1, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. While engaged about a new engine which was being erected underground his hand was injured slightly by the falling of a small stone from the roof. He appears to have been in bad health previously and pyaemia, or blood poisoning, supervened.

LEWIS Lewis J. - 1880 - 27/01/1880 – Age 31 – Labourer. Lady Margaret, Marquis of Bute, Treherbert, Glamorgan. Killed by falling from top of pit framing.

LEWIS Llewellyn - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 17 – Collier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

LEWIS Morgan - 1888 - 26/09/1887 – Age 50 – Repairer. Lewis’ Merthyr, Lewis’ Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Havod, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in an air course near where he was repairing. Three pairs of timbers were discharged 4ft seam. Long wall.

LEWIS Morris (injured) - 1882 - 11/07/1882 – Age 21 – Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. Unexpected fall of a piece of roof weighing about a ton, which dropped on to the face of the workings. A piece glanced off and struck Lewis on the head and leg. 9 weeks off.

LEWIS Nicholas - 1889 - 11/02/1889 – Age 21 – Collier. Ynysfeio, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Struck on head by a small stone from the roof. Died from an abscess on brain on 14th March. 9ft. seam 3ft. 8ins. thick. Long wall.

LEWIS Owen - 1884 - 22/04/1884 – Age 48 - Miner and repairer, Cwmorthin (slate). While in the act of shifting a balk of timber, with which he was constructing an underground bridge, he slipped and fell over a precipice.

LEWIS Owen - 1886 - 21/07/1886 – Age 27 – Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate). While clearing the fall they were struck by a piece of rock which rolled down the slope. 1 killed 1 injured. Davies 6 days off.

LEWIS Rees - 1886 - 20/08/1886 – Age 22 – Collier. Nixon’s Navigation, Nixon’s Navigation Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of coal from the face, which crushed him against a prop.

LEWIS Richard (injured) - 1883 - 06/06/1883 – Age 58 – Labourer. Pennerley (metalliferous). A bar spragging the wheels of a waggon was not withdrawn when the waggon was being drawn up an incline to the crusher it tipped over and knocked Lewis from the incline. Ribs fractured. Five and a half weeks off.

LEWIS Richard (injured) - 1889 - 11/12/1889 – Age 38 – Labourer. Bwich-y-slater (slate). Struck on the arm by a small stone from a blast in an adjoining chamber. The stone was projected through a hole in the pillar between the two chambers, struck the roof and fell upon Lewis, in a place he considered quite safe. Eight and a half weeks off.

LEWIS Richard - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 46 – Collier. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

LEWIS Robert (injured) - 1886 - 21/05/1886 – Age 32 – Rockman. Cwmorthin (slate). Unexpected fall of roof in working place 6ft. high. 2 injured, Lewis 4 months off Jones 4 weeks off.

LEWIS Robert (injured) - 1886 - 29/04/1886 – Age 29 – Rockman. Diphwys, Casson (slate). Explosion of 10lbs. of gunpowder. Hugh John Jones was walking along a level carrying two calico bags, each containing 4lbs. of gunpowder. He was followed by Hugh Samuel Jones carrying two similar bags and by Robert Lewis carrying three similar bags. Jones struck a match to light a candle, or a pipe, his powder ignited and set fire to the rest. He died two days afterwards, and the men following him were severely burned. 1 killed 3 injured. Jones 18 weeks off, Lewis 18 weeks off and Griffith 29 weeks off.

LEWIS Robert - 1880 - 22/06/1880 – Age 22 – Collier. Llay Main, Llay Hall Coal & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. A piece of overhanging coal fell on to him who was loading his tub. He had not considered it necessary to set a prop.

LEWIS Robert - 1884 - 23/02/1884 – Age 24 – Collier. Westminster No.4, Westminster and Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. This was a simple accident. A small piece of clunch fell from over the top of the coal and broke his leg.

LEWIS Rowland (injured) - 1881 - 15/06/1881 – Age 19 – Labourer. Braichgoch (slate), Festiniog. While loading a tram he let a stone fall on to his hand and had his little finger cut off. Eight and a half weeks off.

LEWIS Solomon - 1889 - 20/08/1889 – Collier. Diamond Llantwit, Diamond Llantwit Coal Co. Ltd., Bedwas, Monmouth. While clearing on the top of the coal a piece of clod from the roof fell on his head.

LEWIS Thomas - 1880 - 06/09/1880 – Age 28 – Mason. Avon, Sir Daniel Gooch and others, Maesteg, Glamorgan. One of the ropes to which the walling stage is suspended broke, canted the stage and the men were thrown down the pit into water which had accumulated during walling. 4 killed.

LEWIS Thomas - 1880 - 21/04/1880 – Age 13 - Door boy. Four Feet Level, Aberdare Rhondda Co., Hirwain, Glamorgan. Run over by a horse and loaded tram.

LEWIS Thomas - 1881 - 18/03/1881 – Age 32 – Collier. Cymmer, Cymmer Colliery Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS Thomas - 1882 - 07/06/1882 – Age 52 – Miner. Pennerley (metalliferous), Minsterley, Shropshire. Premature explosion of a hole charged with gunpowder. The man was alone at the time, but the evidence established the fact that the hole had been fully tamped. It seems probable that Lewis put a lighted snuff under the fuse and forgot to blow it out before lighting it finally. He was deaf and consequently could not hear the fuse burn; otherwise, although not looking at the hole, he would have heard enough to warn him.

LEWIS Thomas - 1884 - 27/01/1884 – Age 34 – Undermanager. Naval, Naval Steam Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed. Suffocated while exploring after explosion.

LEWIS Thomas - 1885 - 13/10/1885 – Age 23 – Collier. Hawarden, Hawarden Collieries Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A shot had been fired and deceased went into the place to examine it. He called out to his mates that all was right when a long narrow stone fell from between the pack and the face, capping one or two props.

LEWIS Thomas - 1885 - 18/08/1885 – Age 38 – Collier. Carrs, Carrs Colliery Co. Ltd., Prescot, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased with two other men were setting heavy bars where the roof had fallen to a great height and whilst so engaged a stone rolled down from the side and struck the foot of a prop they were busy with, knocking it down, and the end struck deceased on the head.

LEWIS Thomas - 1888 - 05/01/1888 – Age 14 – Collier. Ffaldau, Ffaldau Colliery Co. Ltd., Garw Valley, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (9ft.x 6ft.) and a face slip of coal (9ft. long and 2ft. wide) while holing three props and one sprag were discharged. Two feet nine seam, 5ft. thick. Long wall.

LEWIS William - 1881 - 06/05/1881 – Age 39 – Collier. Castle, Crawshay Bros., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

LEWIS William - 1884 - 21/11/1884 – Age 49 – Collier. Pontygwaith, Aberbeeg Coal Co., Monmouth. Fall of top. He was sitting in his stall with three others smoking, after finishing work, and a large stone weighing about two tons fell upon him. The place was well timbered, and seemed perfectly safe.

LEWIS William - 1886 - 31/08/1886 – Age 19 – Collier. Cleynen Newport Abercarn, Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He and another boy got into a tram and started it down a dip. The speed got too great they could not get off. At a turn in the road the tram left the rails Lewis was killed on the spot and the other boy injured.

LEWIS William - 1889 - 02/07/1889 – Age 72 – Labourer. Ffaldau, Victoria Ffaldau Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontycymmer, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff) 5ft. x 2ft. x 1ft. in an airway where he was taking off a sharp corner. Stone fell from a slip which was visible before. One prop discharged. 9ft. Seam. Long wall.

LEYAND William - 1880 - 13/12/1880 – Age 50 – Screenman. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Crushed between waggons as he was lowering one under the screens. He had neglected to sprag those standing on the incline when he moved the first one, and they ran down against the waggon he was engaged at.

LEYCETT G. - 1886 - 09/10/1886 – Age 16 – Driver. Shelton, Earl Granville, Stoke, Staffordshire. Fell off tub and was crushed by following ones.

LEYLAND Elizabeth - 1886 - 02/12/1886 – Age 25 – Screener. Alexandra Rose, Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased was supposed to have strained herself but went on working till the 4th inst. when she was taken ill and died on the 14th inst. from typhus fever. Female.

LEYLAND Robert - 1886 - 29/09/1886 – Age 50 – Collier. Lea Green, Mrs. FP Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. The man was drawing the timber from under the tops to allow them to fall and was knocking out the furthest prop. with a rail when the whole fell in suddenly capping all the props.

LEYLAND Thomas - 1880 - 15/04/1880 – Age 28 – Collier. St. Helens, St. Helens Collieries Co Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. A fall of roof occurred as the deceased holed through into an old working. He had bars and props but they gave way.

LIDDELL Alexander - 1881 - 17/12/1881 – Age 24 – Engineman. Moresby, Moresby Coal Co., Whitehaven, Cumberland. Head crushed by descending cage while leaning over shaft.

LIDSTER Thomas - 1888 - 15/07/1888 – Age 22 - Branch man. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Durham. Knocked down and injured while spragging a truck on the sidings. Died on the 20th.

LIGHBROWN Thomas (injured) - 1883 - 29/12/1883 – Collier. Waterside, James Hacking, Burnley, Lancashire. Of Eccleshill, had his left leg broken at Mr. James Hacking's Waterside Colliery yesterday morning. It was caught between the cart and the shafts. He was taken home and attended to by Dr. Armitage. (Blackburn Times).

LIGHTBODY James - 1883 - 11/06/1883 – Age 24 – Collier. Mauldslie, James Waddell and Son, Carluke, Lanarkshire. Fall of side removing stoops while relieving the coal after firing a shot.

LIGHTBROWN James (injured) - 1887 - 22/01/1887 – Age 35 – Miner. Ladyshore Cannel, John Fletcher, Lancashire. Injured in engine brow as he was trying to cross in front of a tub in motion, there being an air screen across the brow.

LIGHTBROWN James - 1888 - 10/04/1888 – Age 35 – Miner. Ladyshore, John Fletcher, Lancashire. Died, the Bolton Infirmary, from injury 22nd January 1887 by a tub at an air screen in the engine brow in the cannel mine. The death not being within one year and a day of the accident is not considered to be comprised by the Act.

LILLY Edward - 1888 - 19/10/1888 – Age 45 – Labourer. Mare Hey, Mare Hey Colliery Co., Harwarden, Flint. Inquiries made. Deceased and some other men were hoisting a stone on to a new engine bed and were then moving the shear legs when the pin at the top broke, deceased being struck on the head by one of the falling legs.

LINDLEY Eli - 1889 - 17/01/1889 – Age 24 – Miner. Outwood No.4, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Fatal by coal falling from a face six yards wide, where he was working with his father they had fired a shot and partially filled the fallen coal away when more fell. Inspection and inquest.

LINN William - 1881 - 30/09/1881 – Age 27 – Collier. Glencleland No.1, Kerr and Mitchell, Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Gas was within six feet of the side of the road which deceased used and he ignited it as he passed. He died in the infirmary. The fireman said he found no gas in morning.

LINN William - 1887 - 15/12/1887 – Age 17 – Miner. Holmes (shale), Holmes Oil Co. Ltd. Uphall, Linlithgow. Went back before shot went off.

LINSEY Minnie - 1889 - 12/07/1889 – Age 2 – Child. Bathurst Main, Bathurst Firebrick Co., Bolsover, Derbyshire. Run over by a train of tubs upon a branch tramway leading from the colliery to a brickyard. The child had strayed upon the tramway. Female.

LINSEY William - 1881 - 19/07/1881 – Age 16 - Landing boy. Water Houses, Joseph Pease and Partners, Durham, Co. Durham. Fracture of skull by winch handle at landing, another boy rapped the set away before he got clear.

LINSLEY Thomas - 1885 - 01/04/1885 – Age 31 - Gateway man. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from roof. He was talking down a canch.

LIPPIAT Joseph - 1880 - 05/10/1880 – Age 51 – Collier. Tillery, B Jayne and Co., Monmouth. Injured by fall of coal and died on the 13th.

LIPTROT James - 1882 - 26/03/1882 – Age 24 – Drawer. Winstanley, Trustees of Late Meyrick Banks, Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased was injured on the 2nd. December 1881. From the evidence at the inquest, it appeared that he was lifting a loaded tub, and strained his side. He was unable to follow his employment, and ultimately died from inflammation of the lungs.

LISHMAN William - 1885 - 21/08/1885 – Age 37 – Hewer. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Fall of a large piece of band stone after shot had been fired.

LISTER James - 1887 - 26/01/1887 – Age 48 - Back overman. Broughton Moor, R Wilson, Broughton Moor, Cumberland. Crushed between stationary and moving tub.

LISTER William (injured) - 1884 - 21/08/1884 – Miner. Ellerbeck, Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof, his coal having knocked out a prop.

LITHERLAND George - 1884 - 04/08/1884 – Age 53 – Collier. Ince Hall, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was riding up the engine brow at a point where the roof was low, and was caught against a bar. He knew that it was against the rules to ride at this point, although the men are allowed to do so from a point further up, where the roof is much higher. Suggested that a notice board should be fixed at the point where the men are permitted to get on the journey.

LITHERLAND John - 1886 - 20/01/1886 – Age 30 – Miner. Cleworth 6 Feet Mine, Tyldesley Coal Company Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal fall of coal from the face of his working place while knocking out sprags in order to let it fall.

LITHERLAND Richard (injured) - 1889 - 26/11/1889 – Age 18 – Dayman. Foggs, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by coal which was being taken down by his father after a shot, it was his first day at colliery work and he did not keep far enough out of the way. Inspection and inquiry.

LITTLE Frederick - 1883 - 01/02/1883 – Age 21 – Hewer. Delves, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Consett, Durham. Legs broken by fall of top coal in Busty Seam. Died 24th March.

LITTLE John - 1882 - 05/01/1882 – Age 60 – Shifter. Leasingthorne, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while drawing timber.

LITTLE Joseph (injured) - 1883 - 18/07/1883 – Age 32 – Miner. Townshend (metalliferous). Went to oil the pulley at the top of the shears, while it was in motion, and had two fingers broken by one of the arms. 6 weeks off.

LITTLE Will - 1886 - 03/06/1886 – Age 26 – Cager. Hills Field (fireclay), Timmis Bros., Stourbridge, Worcester. Fell from inset to bottom of shaft.

LITTLE William - 1882 - 03/11/1882 – Age 24 – Drawer. Enterkine No.9, George Taylor and Co., Ayr, Ayrshire. Supposed to have come in contact with prop or roof.

LITTLEJOHN William - 1883 24/04/1883 23 Labourer. Nether Johnstone, Glasgow Iron Co., Dalzell, Lanarkshire. Crushed between the buffers while uncoupling waggons in motion at the screens.

LITTLER Henry - 1882 - 11/01/1882 – Age 23 – Collier. Winstanley, Trustees of the late Meyrick Banks, Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Fall of roof from slips. The place was well timbered.

LITTLER Thomas - 1881 - 31/12/1881 – Age 34 – Collier. Crow Orchard, Crow Orchard Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and his two sons, were set to get some coal from the side of the road, the roof being unsupported, when a large fall came, burying the three men. There appeared to have been neglect in the timbering on the part of both officials and collier.
