Was sitting down resting with his comrade on the 290 fathoms level when a large stone came away from the hanging wall and crushed him to death. There was a strong stull a few feet above his head. The stone turned out from just beneath the stull.

Deceased was uncoupling an empty tub from a gang when some other tubs which were passing at the time and got off the rails and coming in contact with the tub deceased was engaged with forced it upwards and the lad was crushed against the bar above.

BENNY Charles (injured) - 1889 – 04/11/1889 – Age 17 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Whist removing the top from a dynamite can filled with that explosive the contents exploded inflicting severe injuries to the lad's face and head. He was not at the dynamite case on duty but went there to get a piece of fuse to tie his shoe and while taking off the top of the can a spark from his candle the boy says, fell into the can causing the explosion. Beyond this there was nothing to account for the occurrence.

Hauling rope broke and the gang ran hack on to deceased who was busy placing some trams in the shunt. The rope appeared to have been overloaded and the trailer failed to act at the time. The load to be put on the rope seemed to have been left to the discretion of the gang rider instead of the proper load fixed by the manager or mechanical engineer.

about 6 feet wide when it fell to another slip at the back. They were not using a sprag or nan as they should have done. 2 killed.

BIRCHALL Alfred - 1888 - 01/06/1888 – Age 18 – Drawer. Nook, Crumbuke Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof between two unseen slips falling over the capping of a prop as he was filling coal in his working place.
BIRCHALL John - 1886 - 25/01/1886 – Age 38 – Collier. Pewfall No.2, Richard and Evans Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. This man was getting a pillar of coal and three of his props got capped and he appears to have gone on working without resetting them although told by the fireman to do so when the roof fell on him.
BIRCHALL Mary - 1886 - 09/07/1886 – Age 39 – Pit Brow Woman. Queen, Richard Evans and Co. Ltd., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The waggon lowerer was lowering the waggon down to the next screen when deceased who was in the waggon was crushed against the screen shoot. The deceased told the man to lower the waggon but she must have been taken by surprise as she could easily have slipped on one side of the shoot. Female.
BIRCHALL Thomas - 1884 - 22/08/1884 – Age 29 – Collier. Llanhilleth, H Powell, Monmouth. His stall dipped outwards for about 20 yards and the custom was to take the trams down with three sprags in the man shoving behind. On the day in question he took out all but one, and went in front of the tram to steady it, but was overpowered, lost his light, and was killed.

BIRCHELL Stephen - 1885 - 21/05/1885 – Age 26 – Collier. Risca, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Risca, Monmouthshire. Injured by a fall of coal and died on the 23rd. He was holing under the coal when he pricked a back slip and a lump of coal rolled over on to him.

BIRMINGHAM John - 1886 – 15/01/1886 – Age 23 – Gang rider. Deep, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was a gang rider on a down brow and rode on the chain in front of the tubs. Whilst coming up some of the tubs got off the road and he was jerked off and the tubs caught him. Died 27th April.

Fall of rock roof about 6 yards in length, three and half wide in the centre and less at the ends feather-edged, two and a half feet thick at the side away from the coal. It dropped from a smooth or slip as well as an upright joint.

BITHELL John - 1883 – 09/07/1883 – Age 42 – Dataler. California, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Was in the act of drawing a prop when a stone fell on him. He was not seriously injured, but he left the house too soon and caught cold, the result being that erysipelas set in, causing his death 25th July.
BITTON John - 1889 – 09/04/1889 – Age 23 – Carter. Huish, Writhlington & Huish & Foxcote Collieries Co., Radstock, Somerset. When letting a tub down an incline a hook at the end of a chain, which he had attached to his waist for pulling
with, caught in the bridle chains of the tub which dragged him with it halfway down the incline he was crushed by the ascending tub. This method of drawing tubs by girdle chains is now rare but is still in vogue in the Somerset collieries. It
is 'a barbarous system,’ but the difficulty is how to alter it under existing circumstances.

The man in charge of the journey told him to sit still and called to him again when he knocked the journey away but he got up and was run over. There was three feet clear where he was sitting.
