BLAIR Archibald (non-fatal) - 1884 - 06/09/1884 – Sinker. Highfield, Merry and Cunninghame, Beith. Stone falling from side of shaft.

BLAIR Hugh (non-fatal) - 1889 - 10/10/1889 – Miner. Fergushill No.29, Archibald Finnie and Son, Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Explosion of gunpowder. 2 injured.

BLAIR John - 1885 - 31/10/1885 – Age 37 – Sinker. Nitshill (ironstone or fireclay), Eglington Iron Co., Nitshill, Lanarkshire. Injured by a fall of stones from a part of the shaft which he was repairing.

BLAIR Robson - 1885 - 05/02/1885 – Age 38 – Sinker. West Tyne, Eltringham Colliery Co., Northumberland. Fell from cradle in sinking shaft while placing clams on pumps.

BLAND Isaac (injured) - 1882 - 27/04/1882 – Age 26 - Engine driver. Bog (metalliferous), Minsterley, Shropshire. He carelessly got his thumb entangled in the link motion of the engine. 1 day off.

BLAND John - 1889 - 31/07/1889 – Age 45 – Stoneman. Silksworth, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Alleged to have died from the effects of fumes caused by the use of roburite but doctor certified cause of death to be inflammation of the lungs the result of a chill. Not comprised under the Act.

BLANE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1886 - 20/12/1886 – Drawer. Enterkine No.9, George Taylor and Co., Ayrshire. He Fell off ladder in a blind pit.

BLANE Alexander - 1880 - 08/04/1880 – Age 50 – Brusher. Misk, Eglington iron Co., Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Fall of roof whist engaged taking it down.

BLANE David (non-fatal) - 1888 - 02/10/1888 – Roadsman. Sundrum, Dalmellington Iron Co., Coylton Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp. 2 injured.

BLEAKLEY James (injured) - 1880 - 09/09/1880 – Miner. Whittaker Bridge, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Slightly burned. He was returning to his place without testing with his safety lamp after being out.

BLEAKLEY James (injured) - 1884 - 22/07/1884 – Age 25 – Miner. Croft Side, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Leg broke fall of clod which he was taking down.

BLEAKLEY James Henry (injured) - 1889 - 19/08/1889 – Age 34 – Fireman. Outwood No.4, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Ribs broken by coal falling from the face as he was about to fire a shot. Inspection and inquiry.

BLEAKLEY Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 13/01/1885 – Age 30 – Joiner. Shakerley, William Ramsden, Lancashire. Thumb and three fingers taken off by circular saw his band having slipped from the piece of wood he was cutting.

BLEASDALE or TURNBULL Henry - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 23 – Stoneman. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas. 164 killed.

BLENKINSOP Thomas - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 37 - Master wasteman. East Hetton, Walter Scott, Coxhoe, Co. Durham. Suffocated by afterdamp coming from Trimdon Grange into East Hetton workings while endeavouring to rescue the workmen. 2 killed.

BLENKINSOPP Thomas * - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 37 - Master wasteman, East Hetton, Walter Scott Ltd., Co. Durham.

BLENKINSOPP Thomas - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 27 - Master Shifter. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Cassop-cum-Quarrington. Left a wife and 4 children.

BLEWETT Richard (injured) - 1889 - 09/01/1889 – Age 18 - Skip filler. West Wheal, Seton (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Whilst engaged in filling a skip at the 250 fathom level a stone, which had probably fallen from the ascending skip, struck Blewett on the head causing concussion of the brain. He resumed work in less than a fortnight.

BLEWIT William (injured) - 1889 - 31/08/1889 – Age 15 – Labourer. Berths Consols (metalliferous), Horrabridge, Cornwall. Employed on the dressing floors fell from a tram road a distance of four and a half feet receiving slight injuries to his head.

BLEWITT Thomas - 1881 - 28/04/1881 – Age 32 – Sinker. Lumpsey (ironstone), Bell Bros. Ltd., Saltburn, Yorkshire. Fell off scaffold into sump about 10 fathoms, while putting in tubbing.

BLINKHORN John - 1880 - 21/07/1880 – Age 53 – Dayman. Priestners, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Westleigh, Lancashire. Roof stone falling where it was being taken down.

BLOCKLEHURST Thomas - 1887 - 01/03/1887 – Age 62 – Stallman. Boythorpe, Boythorpe Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof while setting timber to support the same.

BLOMERBY James - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 47 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

BLOOMER James - 1889 - 31/10/1889 – Age 28 – Loader. Saltwells, Earl of Dudley, Cradley Heath, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed. Died 15th Nov.

BLOUNT Charles - 1888 - 25/10/1888 – Age 14 – Screenboy. Shipley Woodside, EM Munday, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Crushed between pated of the hopper of an endless screen belt.

BLOUNT George - 1880 - 18/10/1880 – Age 18 – Drawer. Poolhouse, Booth and Hardcastle, Stourport, Worcester. Whilst deceased and another were descending on a water barrel without a cover the opposite and ascending barrel fell down the shaft, and striking the deceased precipitated him and his comrade to the bottom.

BLOWDEN James - 1887 - 29/01/1887 – Age 40 – Collier. Victoria, Victoria Colliery Co. Ltd., Rainford, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was passing through a rise step and had his place fairly well timbered but a fall came from the leader of the step and knocked his props out.

BLOWER John (injured) - 1886 - 12/04/1886 – Age 16 – Drawer. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Leg broken by the lashing rope in engine brow he being on the wrong side. Accidental.

BLOWER Walter - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 28 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

BLOWER William - 1882 - 02/05/1882 – Age 26 – Collier. Addesley, WS Dugdale, Atherstone, Nottinghamshire. Explosion of gas 31 killed.

BLUNDELL Elijah - 1888 - 29/06/1888 – Age 23 – Loader. Glapwell, Sheepridge Coal and Iron Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He and another man were bringing a loaded tub down a steep part of the stall it overpowered then and running away knocked out a prop and bar causing the roof to fall on him.

BLUNDELL T. - 1882 - 09/12/1882 – Age 42 – Collier. Bailey Hill, Bailey Hill Colliery Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A prop had been knocked out by a shot which had just been fired, and deceased was moving some of the coal to reset it, when the roof fell in upon him.

BLUNDERHEAD T. - 1888 - 28/04/1888 – Age 60 – Collier. Waterloo Main, Brooks and Pickup, Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

BLUNT Albert - 1886 - 15/09/1886 – Age 33 – Dataler. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A heavy stone fell over drawing road knocking out two props and a bar. Not sufficient bars set.

BLYTH James (non-fatal) - 1888 - 04/04/1887 – Fireman. Douglas No.3, Merry and Cunninghame, Paisley, Lanarkshire. While making inspection with naked light he ignited some firedamp.

BLYTH John (non-fatal) - 1886 - 15/02/1886 – Drawer. Bankhead, Cairntable Gas Coal Co., Muirkirk, Ayrshire. Injured while riding on an incline contrary to orders.

BOAM Benjamin - 1887 - 03/11/1887 – Age 23 – Miner. Mill Close (lead), Wass and Sons, Trustees, Darley, Derbyshire. Explosion of firedamp 5 killed.

BOARDMAN James - 1882 - 02/08/1882 – Age 31 – Miner. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trust, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Roof from loose slips it broke down 6 props.

BOARDMAN John James (injured) - 1885 - 09/06/1885 – Age 21 – Filler. Burton Nook, Denton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured in the Roger by piece of following dirt falling from a fault which he was stripping. He was preparing to set a prop but apparently had trusted the roof too long. His own error of judgement.

BOARDMAN Joseph - 1881 - 22/09/1881 – Age 19 – Waggoner. Brinsop Hall, Brinsop Hall Coal Co., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Roof from a slip.

BOARDMAN Thomas (injured) - 1884 - 08/04/1884 – Age 22 – Miner. New Ravin, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof which was on the move.

BODEN John (injured) - 1889 - 20/04/1889 – Age 16 - Hooker on. Baron’s Quarry (salt), Salt Union Ltd., Cheshire. Left hand crushed by piece of rock salt falling from top of the shaft from a hoppet that was being taken past top of shaft as he was pegging the hooks in the hoppet for men to ascend. Inspection and inquiry.

BODEN John - 1880 - 30/11/1880 – Age 38 – Sinker. Lower Delph, Harper and Moores, Cradley, Staffordshire. The engineman pulled the empty bowk too high into the head gear, breaking the guide bar and throwing some pieces thereof down the shaft, and striking the deceased killed him on the spot.

BOFFEY John - 1883 - 25/10/1883 – Age 40 – Deputy. Bretby Newhall Park, Countess of Chesterfield, Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Getting coal off the side of an airway when they fell and crushed him.

BOGLE John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 07/06/1889 – Miner. Rosehill No.12, Robert Addie and Sons, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fall of coal.

BOGLE Robert (non-fatal) - 1886 - 22/11/1886 – Miner. Jordonhill No.8, Monkland Iron Co., Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Struck by an iron bar which acted as a block upon the road.

BOLAS T. - 1883 - 24/10/1883 – Age 24 – Filler. Prior’s Lee, Lilleshall Co., Shifnal, Staffordshire. Crushed against tub by fall of roof.

BOLD R. - 1881 – 20/01/1881 – Age 70 – Roadsman. Poynton, Lord Vernon, Stockport, Cheshire. Caught by cage in shaft.

BOLDERSON William (injured) - 1880 – 01/11/1880 – Miner. Cupola, Brooks and Pickup, Hameldon, Lancashire. Burned. In charging a shot in stone work their candle spark from it ignited 4 lbs of powder in the charger and canister. 2 injured.

BOLES Samuel - 1887 - 28/11/1887 – Age 15 – Collier. Calderhead, Shotts Iron Co., Shotts, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face, longwall.

BOLITHO James - 1888 - 13/02/1888 – Age 54 – Miner. South Condurrow (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Three holes were fired of which two exploded. The third missing fire, Bolitho went back. He then took the scraper and cleared the hole which had missed from the dirt that had been thrown over it by the explosion of the other holes. His comrade had the fuse in his hand waiting to give it to the deceased and while he was digging out the dirt the hole exploded. The deceased was a steady man and aware of the rules but he appears to have ignored them in this case as he went back to the hole 20 minutes after the explosion instead of waiting for an hour which he ought to have done.

BOLITHO William - 1883 - 03/02/1883 – Age 41, Ostler. Dare, D Davies and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Crushed between railway waggons.

BOLLINGTON Robert - 1889 - 31/10/1889 – Age 51 – Collier. Chell, Chell Colliery Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof from a slip at the working face. Died 7th Nov.

BOLTON George - 1880 - 21/01/1880 – Wagoner. Leycett, Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

BOLTON George - 1888 - 01/03/1888 – Age 28 - A borer. Garswood Hall, Garswood Hall Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was a contractor's man getting down roof and after a shot had been fire went in to fill when a stone fell upon him. This place had been examined by the fireman and contractor who had failed to detect the danger.

BOLTON Giles - 1886 - 14/01/1886 – Age 22 – Drawer. Gibfield, Upper Arley, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Fatal. Overpowered by a tub which he was about to gig down to the level. He went in front of it to guide it from the plates on to the rails and the chain becoming unhooked he was unable to hold it. Accidental.

BOLTON James - 1886 - 17/12/1886 – Age 47 – Miner. Ashton’s Field, Cannel Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Head slightly bruised by a splinter of clod from the roof erysipelas supervened. Died 17th.

BOLTON John - 1880 - 04/05/1880 – Age 35 – Collier. Thornley, Original Hartlepool Colliers Co. Ltd., Trimdon Grange, Durham. Neck broken by a tub crushing him against roof.

BOLTON John - 1880 - 23/01/1880 – Age 25 – Collier. Gidlow & Swinley, Rylands Sons and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Fall of roof from slips. Place well timbered.

BOLTON John - 1885 - 06/08/1885 – Age 50 – Collier. Longlee, William Barr and Sons, Dalserf, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at edge of goaf, stoops.

BONAR Edward (non-fatal) - 1889 – 08/04/1889 – Age 17 – Drawer. Mosside, Gavin Paul and Sons, Linlithgow. Crushed by tub. 23 days off.

BOND James (injured) - 1885 – 28/10/1885 – Age 33 – Miner. Lower Hall, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by fall of roof from a slip which he had just bared at the face. The props were about 4 feet back, and some were uncapped by the fall. Error of judgement on his own part.

BOND Joseph - 1887 – 02/07/1887 – Age 18 – Dataler. Douglas Bank, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiries made. He was assisting a fireman to take up some floor and is supposed to have disturbed the foot of a prop supporting a bar when a stone fell on him.

BONES John - 1889 – 04/11/1889 – Age 23 – Stoneman. Hebburn, A Tyne Coal Co., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Burnt by blown out shot and died within a few days. 6 killed.

BONSFIELD George - 1888 – 30/10/1888 – Age 53 – Stoneman. Waterhouses, Pease and Partners Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Serious injury to spine by fall of stone. Died 8th Nov.

BONSOR Samuel - 1887 – 10/03/1887 – Age 25 – Stallman. Bedworth, Bedworth Coal and Iron Co., Bedworth, Leicester. Fall of coal.

BOONHAM Samuel - 1882 – 02/05/1882 – Age 49 – Stallman. Addesley, WS Dugdale, Atherstone, Nottinghamshire. Explosion of gas 31 killed.

BOOTH B. - 1882 - 18/12/1882 – Age 45 – Collier. Kiveton Park, Kiveton Park Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of coal. Died 26th Jan 1883.

BOOTH Dennis - 1882 – 19/10/1882 – Age 53 – Labourer. Townley, Burnley, Lancashire. Sank down and was suffocated among crushed coal at the coke ovens. Not comprised.

BOOTH Ephraim - 1888 – 13/01/1888 – Age 30 – Miner. Atherton, Crumbuke Fletcher Burrows & Co. Lancashire. Fatal by roof falling the coal on top of his tub having apparently knocked a prop out.

BOOTH H. - 1885 – 24/07/1885 – Age 36 – Collier. Denaby Main, Denaby Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 21st Dec.

BOOTH Henry - 1888 – 08/11/1888 – Age 19 – Loader. Craven, HS and J Harris, Coventry, Warwick. Two tubs became detached from the train of empty tubs descending the incline. He was at the foot of the incline where one of the tubs struck him and killed him.

BOOTH J. - 1886 – 03/12/1886 – Age 50 – Collier. Diglake, Rigby and Co., Stoke, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

BOOTH John - 1883 – 11/08/1883 – Age 16 – Screener. Wharncliffe, Carlton R Craik and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Run over by waggons.

BOOTH John - 1888 – 06/11/1888 – Age 52 – Stallman. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

BOOTH Wiliam - 1889 – 19/07/1889 – Age 20 – Metalman. Bridgewater No.1, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Killed by roof falling as he was preparing a shot for enlarging a tunnel, the tunnel was in the sandstone rock but the fall exposed a strip of coal. Inspection and inquest attend.

BOOTH William - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 17 – Wagoner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal, great explosion. 178 killed.

BOOZEY Arthur - 1885 – 23/12/1885 – Age 21 – Shackler. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

BORTHWICK James - 1882 – 01/09/1882 – Age 55 – Labourer. Cowdenbeath, Cowdenbeath Coal Co., Beath, Fife. Run over by waggons.

BOSANKO Benjamin - 1881 - 28/01/1881 - Age 21 – Putter. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Killed in cage while descending, a large piece of ice fell from shaft side and broke through cage top.

BOSTON J. - 1888 - 24/07/1888 – Age 31 – Collier. Podmore Hall, Cooper and Craig, Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of coal while drawing timber.

BOSTON James - 1886 - 24/08/1886 – Age 50 - Waggon setter. Gibfield, Arley Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Taken ill and died. Inquest heart disease.

BOSWORTH Thomas - 1883 - 22/08/1883 – Age 30 – Driver. Pelsall, Pelsall Coal and Iron Co., Pelsall, Staffordshire. Crushed by tubs. Injured 21st August. Caused by horse suddenly starting.

BOTT J. - 1889 - 28/01/1889 – Age 53 – Collier. Corton Wood, Corton Wood Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of side.

BOTTOM E. - 1887 - 23/03/1887 – Age 21 – Hurrier. North Gawber, Fountain and Burnley, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

BOTTOMLEY James (injured) - 1889 - 14/01/1889 – Age 34 – Miner. Butterworth, Hall Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Burned by a flash of firedamp in his working place. A piper or small issue of gas occurred which was not much noticed but an hour afterwards when some coal was being shovelled the motion wafted the gas on to a candle at the higher side of the place. Inspection and inquiry.

BOTTOMLEY John (injured) - 1885 - 05/10/1885 – Age 22 – Miner. Elpit Edge, James Leach, Lancashire. Injured by a roof stone which fell from a slip. He had a prop set close to the slip but on the other side of it.

BOTTOMS James - 1885 - 30/12/1884 – Age 40 – Carter. Bradford, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Fatally injured died 3rd January. He was loading dirt from the pit tubs into his cart by an ordinary tipper, and in consequence of the frost his foot slipped and he was thrown over the tipper.

BOTTRELL Rebecca (injured) - 1888 - 16/05/1888 – Age 16 – Tindresser. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. Went to speak to a lad away from her working place and got her dress entangled in the gear of the dipper wheel. Seriously bruised. The shafting was properly fenced. Female.

BOUGH Bryan - 1885 - 16/08/1885 – Age 42 – Stallman. West Cannock, West Cannock Colliery Co., Hednesford, Staffordshire. Killed by fall of roof which broke over three ranks of trees.

BOULDIN Thomas - 1888 - 30/08/1888 – Age 44 – Collier. Lewis’ Merthyr Lewis’, Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Havod, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (coal) from between unseen slips at face, 4ft seam. Longwall. Died 12th January 1889.

BOULTON Harry - 1886 - 15/05/1886 – Age 23 – Collier. Coed Cae Tillery, PS Phillips, Monmouth. Fall of coal. The top coal had been left up and orders had been given to pull it down but this was not done and it fell killing Boulton and injuring two other persons.

BOULTON John - 1880 - 21/01/1880. Crutter, Leycett Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

BOULTON Thomas - 1889 - 21/10/1889 – Age 21 – Shunter. Whitfield, Chatterley Iron Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. While climbing from one truck to another while they were in motion he slipped or fell and was caught by ash box of locomotive.

BOUNDER William - 1885 - 19/09/1885 – Age 24 - Journey rider. New Tredegar, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Run over by trams. He worked on to a rise heading into which about half way down a level opens. A stop block is fixed here which he ought to have closed but he omitted to do so and later on five trams accidentally started from the top without being coupled to the rope. Bounder ran down in front of them to try to reach the stop block but the trams caught him and he was killed.

Was engaged stopping and fired two holes, which knocked away a piece of timber. On returning, Bowden and his comrade commenced throwing the broken ore down a pass without replacing the timber whilst so engaged a reck about 3 tons weight came away from the hanging wall and killed Bowden.

When at the colliery for a load of coal be, apparently knowingly, got through the fencings at the top of No. 2 shaft, into which he fell, and was killed. Not comprised.

BRADFIELD William - 1885 - 15/06/1885 – Age 59 – Pumpman. Llantwit Black Vein, Llantwit Black Vein Coal Co. Ltd., Llantwit, Glamorganshire. He was looking after a pump at the bottom of an incline and was last seen standing on the wall of a lodge room. A coupling broke and four trams ran back down the incline and he was picked up dead amongst the debris.

It fell from an unseen back or shoot and had been left on as being solid by the men who had been repairing a day or two before. The fireman that morning also considered it solid.

Leg broken above ground while engaged with three other men at a double purchase crab lifting some rods in the shaft. A jerk and there being ice on the ground 'caused him to slip.

It was supposed that the rope went off the pulley and the fall of the cage about 13 feet, snapped the rope where it struck the axel. It was a very stormy morning with snow falling heavily at the time. 2 killed.
