BARNES Richard - 1888 - 06/06/1888 – Age 19 - Horse driver. Wrexham, Wrexham & Acton Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased went on to the jig to shout to the colliers at the top as they could not hear his whistle from the bottom when the chain breaking, the tubs ran back and caught a prop. The manager of this colliery was prosecuted some years ago for not having proper signalling apparatus on the jigs but the magistrates held that a whistle was sufficient and met the requirements of the Act.

BARON James - 1887 - 07/01/1887 – Age 35 – Collier. Fir Tree House, Crompton and Shawcross, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Caused by fall of roof coal through slips which he had bared as his face of coal advanced. His last bar was only 4 feet back and he had a prop set in advance of the bar under the coal that fell. This occurred on 7th Jan. 1886 but was accidental omitted from the list for that year.
BARON Joseph - 1884 - 24/10/1884 – Age 60 – Dataler. Norley, Norley Coal and Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was building a pack when the roof began to weight and a stone fell, knocking out a prop. This was reset but it was not sufficient as the roof was still on the move and shortly after a stone, which deceased knew to be bad, fell upon him. There appeared to have been considerable carelessness in the matter, and the underlooker who had visited the place shortly before the accident should have seen that more timber was set.

Having stumbled in front of his gang or train of tubs near the pit as he was about to unhook the pony the first tub ran over him. The pony was going at a walking pace and there was plenty of room at the place.

BARRETT John - 1883 - 19/03/1883 – Age 18 – Miner. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Cook’s Kitchen Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. The two deceased with others were working in a stope on the 332 fathoms level east of engine shaft. Two or three holes had been fired leaving some lose ground on the hanging wall of the lode. Whilst taking down some of it fell on Cock and Barrett. The former was killed instantly. and the latter injuries from which he died 3 days afterwards. 2 killed.

slip and some stone fell out striking him on the back of the neck.

BATE John - 1886 – 16/12/1886 – Age 57 – Dataler. New Boston, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was building a pack when the roof fell on him from over the drawing road. If the roof had been barred this accident would in all probability, not have occurred.
BATE Matthew - 1888 – 09/02/1888 – Age 29 – Hooker on. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Three 10 feet bars were being sent down the pit when one slipped from the cage and rebounding from the side of the shaft struck deceased. The bars had evidently not been properly secured in the cage by the banksman.

BATH James (injured) - 1888 - 25/07/1888 – Age 45 – Engineman. Cooks Kitchen (metalliferous) Camborne, Cornwall. One of the stamps boilers exploded. Bath going into the engine room stepped into the boiling water scalding both his legs. The boiler evidently exploded from want of feed which should have been attended to by the injured man.

BATT Thomas - 1885 - 11/05/1885 – Age 25 – Labourer. Camerton, Miss Jarrett, Camerton, Somerset. He slipped and had his foot run over when letting down a waggon of coal on the weigh-bridge and died on the 25th. after having two operations performed on his leg.

BAWDEN William - 1883 - 09/05/1883 – Age 22 – Miner. Devon Great United (metalliferous), Devon Great United Mining Co., Tavistock, Devon. The two deceased with other men were engaged driving an end with boring machinery. They were working in the night core, descended the ladders at the same time as their comrades, but going on faster just reached their place of work at the end of the 60 fathom level when an explosion as heard they were subsequently found quite dead, and terribly mutilated, close to where a locker supposed to have contained about 10lbs. of dynamite was kept. This locker was blown to pieces. It is probable that Bawden whose hands were much shattered had been engaged taking something out of the dynamite locker when his lighted candle fell in the box and caused the explosion. Neither of the deceased had carried any dynamite down with them. 2 killed.

BAXENDALE Henry - 1882 - 13/04/1882 – Age 62. Sawyer Ince Hall, Ince Hall Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The deceased was attending to a circular saw, and was struck in the stomach by a piece of wood flying off. He had been warned by his mate that it was in a dangerous position.

BENNET John - 1886 – 07/05/1886 – Age 46 – Dataler. Lindsay, Wigan Coal and Iron Co Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased and another main were repairing an air road and replacing timber where required. He had put a middle prop under a broken bar but finding it too loose knocked it out with his hand when the bar and some loose stones fell on him. Before he was quite released another fall occurred and he was suffocated.
BENNET Richard (injured) - 1889 – 17/06/1889 – Age 45 – Engineman. Tonge, Jethro Scowcroft, Lancashire. Arm dragged off at shoulder by it having got caught between an endless rope and the tightening pulley, he was oiling the pulley.

BENNETT Amos (injured) - 1881 - 04/03/1881 – Age 21 – Labourer. Bog (metalliferous), Minsterley. He was assisting some men who were lowering a large winding pulley from the headgear by means of a winch; some of the men let go too soon, and one of the handles in flying round struck Bennett, breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle. 22 weeks off.

BENNETT John (injured) - 1885 - 08/08/1885 – Age 59 - Labourer. Braichgoch (slate), Corris Uchaf, North Wales. A block of slate which he was raising with a travelling crane overbalanced and fell on his knee. 10 weeks off.
BENNETT John - 1881 - 14/05/1881 – Age 30 – Pikeman. Barrow Hill, Coppice Woodall and Co., Dudley, Worcester. By a sudden and unexpected fall of coal in thick seam which deceased was trying to bring down with a crowbar.
BENNETT John - 1887 - 17/05/1887 – Age 52 – Collier. Hindley Green, John Scowcroft and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was getting his top coals down when a stone suddenly fell bringing the coal with it and knocking out a prop.
BENNETT John - 1889 - 10/04/1889 – Age 33 – Labourer. Grassmoor, Grassmoor Colliery Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Appears to have been returning home at night late and passing the coke ovens got his clothes on fire and died from the effects of burns.
BENNETT Joseph (injured) - 1881 - 24/03/1881 – age 47 - Pitman. Pennerley (metalliferous), Minsterley. The men were being lowered down a shaft on a swinging sollar, attached to a hemp rope five inches in circumference for the purpose of taking measurements for new set of timber. The rope was allowed by the men at the surface to slip over the flange at the end of the barrel of the winch, and it got cut through as the barrel turned round and broke. Corfield and Bennett fell with the sollar some 15 or 20 fathoms and very narrowly escaped death. The former had his ankle dislocated and his leg broken above the ankle, whilst the latter had his right leg broken in two places above the knee had two or three ribs broken. The accident would have been prevented if the flange had been higher and more care taken. 36 weeks off. 2 injured.

BENNETT Squire (injured) - 1885 - 22/12/1885 – Age 14 - Horse driver. Burton Nook, Denton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Injured by the tubs which he was conveying along a roomy waggon road. It was his last train, and in getting on the front tub in a hurry he slipped. The horse was a quiet and willing worker.

BENNETTS James - 1883 - 02/11/1883 – Age 21 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Was sitting down resting with his comrade on the 290 fathoms level when a large stone came away from the hanging wall and crushed him to death. There was a strong stull a few feet above his head. The stone turned out from just beneath the stull.
