HOLDING James (survivor) - 1870 - 12/12/1870 – Sinker. Winney Hill, Altham Colliery Co., Altham, Lancashire. During sinking operations, there are two shafts, the upcast and downcast, the former being used at present to wind water, of which the supply is so copious as to require an engine running day and night to keep the other pit clear. The other shaft is being lined with bricks as required by the Act of Parliament. This work has been effected to the height of nearly eleven yards from the bottom, and the men engaged work off a circular scaffold which was fixed to the sides, and about sixty yards from the top of the pit. The bricks and mortar were let down to them by the ordinary coal tubs, and the mouth of the pit was protected by a wooden cover which works in a groove, and slides on or off as required. The cover is barred at the sides to prevent it slipping, and when a tub has to be let down it is raised to allow the jenny or cover being slid back, and then it is lowered by the engine. About noon the men at the top were pushing a tub containing 50 bricks onto the cover for the purpose of lowering them into the shaft, when the bolt was seen to slip back the cover and the tub and its contents dashed down the pit, smashing to pieces the scaffolding, and pitching some of the men into the water below. The Banksman named Atkinson, saw the tub about to fall, and stretched forth his hand to hold it back, but finding he was unable to do so he released his hold. A cry from the top was given as the tubs were seen to descend, and Thompson and Todd Managed to get up to some brickwork with their knees. The other men were not so successful, being precipitated into the water. Macintosh, Wade and Holding raised to the surface, but Halstead was not seen to rise. Macintosh seized hold of the bell wire which runs down the side of the pit, and a rope which the engineman lowered was seized by Holding and Wade. The last named seems to have floundered about in the water, and would have been drowned but for this timely aid. The capstan rope was lowered, and the men took hold of it. The engine rope was then hoisted up, and a tub having been attached to it was lowered, and the unfortunate men were brought up. Thompson and Todd were the first brought up, afterwards Macintosh and Holding, and then Wade. Holding was hurt on the arm and had a scalp wound. He owed the preservation of his life to resting with his knees on Wades shoulder, for he could not have retained his hold of the rope during the time that had elapsed before he was rescued. The other men were injured more or less, but none fatal. The body of Halstead was recovered about four o'clock, and removed to Mr. Bracewell's public house. The jury returned a verdict that "the deceased was accidentally drowned. (Accrington Times).
