HIGGINS Peter - 1874 – 20/02/1874 – Age 50 – Bottomer. Longrigg, James Nimmo and Co., Slamannan, Stirling. Crushed by the cage coming down on him. He crossed the shaft instead of taking the proper road by the end of it.

HIGGINS Robert - 1871 – 13/07/1871 – Age 35 – Sinker. Cadder (ironstone), Carron Iron Co., Bishopbriggs, Lanarkshire. By a scaffold on which they were standing getting detached from the rope. 3 killed.

HIGGINSON Thomas - 1875 - 02/02/1875 – Age 58 – Cager, Union, Stour Valley Coal and Iron Co., West Bromwich, Stafford. While lifting a piece of timber (a bar) out of a tub in which he was standing he fell backwards and dislocated his neck.

HIGGS Esau - 1874 - 29/06/1874 – Age 15 – Hurrier. Yate, Yate Colliery Co., Gloucester, Crushed by trams in the dark.

HIGH William - 1875 - 11/10/1875 – Age 48 - Underground captain. Tindal Moor (metalliferous), Tindal Moor Furness, Lancashire. He went to the bottom of a sinking shaft and was suffocated either by carbonic acid gas or the fumes resulting from the explosion of dynamite.

HIGSON James - 1872 - 10/05/1872 – Age 31 – Coalminer. School, William Ford Hulton, Hulton, Lancashire. Burned by an explosion of firedamp. The place appeared quite clear of gas until some roof fell when he, fearing the boy was under it, rushed forward with an open light and encountered a sudden outburst of firedamp. Died 20th.

HILL J. - 1873 - 10/04/1873 - Hooker-on. Old Hill, Messrs Hingley, Rowley, Stafford. Whilst giving signal to raise the workmen the signal wire broke precipitating him to the floor. The cage was raised before he could recover himself and crushed him against inset. Injured 9th. Died this day.

HILL James - 1879 - 28/07/1879 – Age 11. Meadows, Lamb and Moore, Wigan, Lancashire. Not employed at the colliery but was playing with some other boys with the waggons, pushed one a few yards from the others when it ran back and he was crushed between the buffers.

HINDLE James - 1870 - 20/04/1870 – Age 36 - Miner. Baxenden, George Hargreaves and Co., Baxenden, Lancashire. Explosion in Railway pit. There followed a long enquiry at the inquest in late April into this accident and the jury arrived at the verdict of "We are of the opinion that this is accidental death through stopping the ventilation in the main drift by disconnecting the air pipes. We are of the opinion that this ought never to have been allowed. We also think the manager is to blame for not appointing a competent fireman after the first explosion”. (Accrington Times).

HINDLE Richard - 1874 - 24/11/1874 – Age 16 - Engine tenter. Hole in Bank, George Hargreaves and Co. Baxenden, Lancashire. Caught whilst moving the engine over the centre. It was a small engine below ground used for working an endless chain. Died 29th Richard Hindle, aged 17, died on Sunday afternoon from injuries received on 24th November. Deceased was an engine tenter at Black Moor coal pit belonging to Messrs Ashworth and Hargreaves and Co. Baxenden. On 24th. November he was attempting to start his engine by stepping on the spokes of the flywheel. The sudden impetus he gave the wheel did not allow him time to withdraw his leg, which was so badly crushed between the flywheel and engine that it had to be amputated. (Bacup and Rossendale Times).

HINDLE William (injured) - 1872 - 03/02/1872 – Age 32 - Collier. Jenny Lind, Baxenden, Lancashire. Hindle who had finished his work was ascending the pit in a bucket and whilst being wound up in a bucket lost his balance and fell down the pit. Fortunately he had only got about 16 yards from the bottom or he would have been dashed to pieces. As it was he had no bones broken, but has received sever shock and internal injuries. He was removed back home, and Dr. Russell called to attend him. He is progressing very favourably. (Accrington Times).

HOLBROOK John - 1871 – 28/07/1871 – Age 14 – Ganger. Clay Cross, Sir W Jackson and Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof (Blackshale coal).

HOLCROFT Ralph - 1872 – 28/03/1872 – Age 34 – Deputy underlooker. Lovers Lane, John Fletcher and others, Atherton, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in 5 Feet mine. The portion of workings situated beyond a fault became foul in consequence of the space for the passage of air being too small and ignition was caused by a shot which blew out the stemming. 27 killed.

HOLDEN Charles (injured) - 1879 - 29/11/1879 – Age 27 - Miner. Birkacre, John Thom, Chorley, Lancashire. Slightly burned. Wrongfully drilling out a missed shot.

HOLDEN Charles - 1875 - 04/12/1875 – Age 26 – Metalman. Alexandra, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Thrown from descending cage in consequence of it becoming in contact with it at meetings. 7 killed.

HOLDEN Christopher - 1877 - 20/01/1877 – Age 21 – Coalminer. Wharton Hall, Wharton Hall Colliery Co., Shakerley, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp at a fault where he put his candle.

HOLDEN George - 1874 - 18/05/1874 – Age 34 – Sinker. Norley, Thomas Whaley and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas in No5 pit. While sinkers were putting in bricking an explosion occurred of some gas that had accumulated under the scaffold coming from Ravin Mine which had just been sunk through. 4 killed.

HOLDEN J. - 1876 - 21/03/1876 – Age 31 – Bondsman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stafford. Fall of coal in thick coal pit. He had wandered from his work 15 yards to where he was found subsequently in a dying state.

HOLDEN James - 1877 - 07/02/1877. Foggs, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Darcy Lever, Lancashire. Suffocation. The mine became either on fire either from an explosion of firedamp or the ignition of brattice cloth. 10 killed.

HOLDEN James - 1878 - 03/01/1878 – Age 24 - Miner. Scout Moor, Executors of L Duckworth, Shuttleworth, Lancashire. Stone falling on him while he was in the act of propping it.
