Deceased was engaged, with others, driving a tunnel into Kit Hill by means of boring machinery. On the 13th August, at 2 p.m. a miner named Richard Daniell charged seven holes in the back with dynamite, and fired them, but only five exploded. John Doidge, the head man of the next core was informed of this. He said, ‘All right,’ and made an arrangement with Daniell to change cores for the next day (the 14th), as he Daniell wanted to attend a prayer meeting in the afternoon. Doidge then worked till 10p.m. and with his comrades, who also knew that there were unexploded holes in the back, bored and fired several holes in the bottom. The next core, which worked till 6 am. of the 14th, were cautioned by Doidge about the unexploded holes in the back. They did nothing to them, but bored several holes in the bottom and having fixed the machinery for boring in the back, left work. In accordance with the arrangement made previous day with Daniell, Doidge came to the tunnel at 6 a.m., and at once commenced boring in the back. After working for about one and a quarter hour an explosion took place, resulting in the death of Doidge, and serious injury to the two men with him. The borer had, probably, either penetrated into one of the unexploded charges, or had encountered some nitro-glycerine exuded from them, and conveyed perhaps some little distance away through a crack in the rock.
