Was carrying some dynamite cartridges and detonators in one hand and a lighted candle in the other and whilst climbing over a pile of stuff in the level changed the candle from one hand to the other when an explosion occurred causing his death.

DAVIES Isiah - 1887 - 04/07/1887 – Age 14 - Pony driver. Queen, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. The lad was in charge of a pony taking a full tub up a brow and it is supposed that the gearing gave way letting the tub run back on to deceased who appeared to have been behind the tub. There should have been a drag on the tub to prevent it running back but deceased neglected to use it.

He was ripping back a pillar and in working out the bottom part the top coal and roof fell on him. It is doubtful whether he had timbered the top coal if not he was much to blame but he is said to have been a careful man and had worked over 20 years at Tredegar.
DAVIES John - 1886 - 01/02/1886 – Age 35 – Collier. Aral, T Latch and Co., Monmouth. Injured by the explosion of a charge of gunpowder he was preparing to fire. He died the following day.
DAVIES John - 1887 - 17/02/1887 – Age 17 – Collier. New Broughton, Thomas Clayton, Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged in putting some new guide rods into the pit and deceased was watching the operations. He was sent off the bank as he was in the way and shortly after was found on the ground groaning and badly injured. It is supposed that he was climbing up a ladder on to the stage mid-way fell from it. He was out of work at the time.

It was known to the colliers that the stone was insecure three hours before it fell but the place had been passed by the fireman as safe to work in. 2ft. 9in seam. Longwall.
DAVIES John - 1888 - 08/10/1888 – Age 38 – Timberman. Llwynypia, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Tonypandy, Glamorgan. Fall of roof on engine plane while riding on empty journey. The road was 7.5ft. high, 11.5ft. wide at bottom, and 7.5ft. at top and double timbered. 6ft. seam. Long wall. 2 killed.

DAVIES John D. - 1889 - 08/10/1889 – Age 34 – Collier. Gwaun Cae Gurwen, New Gwaun Cae Gurwen Colliery Co., Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (clod 12ins. thick) from between two slips forming an acute angle and the coal face. There were props on each side but none under part which fell. Big vein, 4ft. thick. Long wall.
DAVIES John H.G. - 1888 - 13/04/1888 – Age 18 - Hooker on. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The jigger had brought out a loaded tub and after putting a sleeper across the rails at the top of the jig turned the tub on the plates and in so doing knocked the sleeper away when the tub overpowered him and running down the jig crushed deceased against the empty tub. The manager promised to use more efficient stop blocks in future.

Deceased was employed for the day as door boy and was standing between a journey of trams and another tram loaded these being about two feet apart. The single tram moved on and squeezed him. He died next day.

She was standing against the buffer waggon with her back to one which the waggon lowerer was letting down and he not did not call out. Female.
DAVIES Luke - 1885 - 16/02/1885 – Age 15 - Tub greaser. Plaskynaston, Plaskynaston Coal Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Some timber was being sent down the pit and to enable them to put it into the cage the fence bad been raised and fastened up. Deceased had greased a tub and was placing it ready for the banksman but pushed it too far and into the pit and failing to loose his hold fell down the pit with it. The banksman was standing about a yard away at the time but with his back to the lad his attention having been drawn to the other cage.

DAVIES Robert (injured) - 1886 - 13/04/1886 – Age 48 – Rockman. Riwbach (slate). A hole 5 ft. deep was enlarged with a little dynamite and 2lb of gunpowder. The powder appears to have got damp for it made two reports and a fizzing noise between them. Thinking all was over Davies returned to the hole when a third explosion took place injuring his face and eyes. Both eyes blinded.

DAVIES Robert - 1882 - 12/10/1882 – Age 37 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. While he was working down slate loosened by blasting another piece fell on him injuring his arm which had to be amputated. 18 weeks off.
DAVIES Robert - 1884 - 16/07/1884 – Age 28 – Metalman. Vauxhall, Vauxhall Colliery Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was engaged in charging a shot when the powder exploded. It was supposed that a little powder had fallen on the side of the hole, and it was ignited by a defective rammer which the man was using. The rammer was of iron with a copper head, but the latter was worn and of less size than the iron. The head had also worn loose, leaving the rivets to project.
DAVIES Robert - 1885 - 19/06/1885 – Age 25 - Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate). Skull fractured by the handle of a crane while he was lowering a large block of slate. He had slackened his hold too soon thinking the block was down. He died 9 days after the accident.

DAVIES Robert - 1888 - 14/04/1888 – Age 28 – Collier. Llay Hall, Edwin S Clark, Wrexham. Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were getting top coal down after working out a pillar and knocked the props out expecting it to fall. As it did not come they started wedging it down without first resetting the props when the whole of it suddenly came away bringing a large quantity of the over lying clod with it and burying the two men. Accident entirely due to carelessness. 2 killed.
DAVIES S. - 1881 - 28/07/1881 – Age 38 – Collier. Sirhowy No.9, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouth. Injured by a fall of top coal and died the following day.
DAVIES Samuel - 1885 - 25/11/1885 – Age 36 – Collier. Aston Hall, Aston Hall Coal & Brock Co., Harwarden, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was going down a balance brow on his way to the pit bottom and just as he reached the level was struck by a loaded tub which had been allowed to get away by the balancer before it was hooked on to the chain.

DAVIES T. - 1883 - 30/03/1883 – Age 36 – Haulier. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co., Monmouthshire. He had brought some loaded trams onto a heading and returned it up still with a sledge hammer. Soon after he was then heard shouting and he was found under a fall of coal and stone where a collar had broken down. It is supposed he had loosened the timber before it fell.

His bead was severely crushed between the block and the side of the level and he has lost the thumb of his left hand. 11 weeks off.

Deceased had fired a shot and then went immediately to examine the place and before the smoke had cleared away. The powder seems to have blown up into the roof for there was a very heavy fall capping props and two or three chocks and burying deceased.

The roof had been sounded and appeared to be perfectly firm and a man was in the act of boring a hole in the very rock that fell in order to bring down part of it by a blast. DAVIS John - 1888 - 09/08/1888 – Age 21 - Smith’s striker. Garn, Blaenavon Co. Ltd., Blaenavon, Monmouth. In the smithy through the bursting of a short iron tube made into a roller for the rope on an engine plane to work over. There were cast iron ends in this roller for the spindles or axles one of which required repairs. It was put into the smith's fire and in five or six minutes it burst and killed this man.
