DAVIS Joseph - 1884 - 24/01/1884 – Age 15 – Driver. Littletown, Earl of Durham, Durham, Co. Durham. Fell off limbers, and was crushed between tubs and side.

DAVIS Owen - 1889 - 28/01/1889 – Age 33 – Labourer. Celynen Newport, Abercarn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abercarn, Monmouth. He was crushed between railway trucks and the wall of the pit bank. His intention was to allow them to pass, and but for a protruding bolt in one of the tracks he would have been safe where he stood.

DAVIS Rees - 1885 - 20/10/1885 – Age 34 – Tunneller. Stopes, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Fatal. Having lighted two shots in a tunnel he and his comrade retired to a place of safety and thinking they had heard two explosions returned to the face when the second shot went off. His own mistake supposed to be from an echo.

DAVIS Thomas (injured) - 1884 - 26/04/1884 – Age 52 – Miner. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. He was engaged in removing stuff from an old stull when a stone from the stuff fell on his foot. 6 days off.

DAVIS Thomas - 1887 - 24/02/1887 – Age 18 – Shaftboy. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Leg broken and crushed by tubs running on him. Died 12th. March.

DAVIS Thomas - 1888 - 03/09/1888 – Age 37 – Hewer. Howden, Chapman Morson and Co. Ltd., Crook, Co. Durham. Fall of roof from a slip breaking down some props.

DAVIS Thomas - 1889 - 05/03/1889 – Age 42 – Collier. Maesteg, Merthyr Thomas Roberts and Co., Maesteg, Glamorgan. Fall of stone (12ins. x 10ins. x 9ins.) from front of rippings while clearing away some stone which he had taken down. 4-ft. seam. Long wall.

DAVIS Thomas - 1889 - 16/12/1889 – Age 45 – Miner. Chequerbent, Lancashire. Died today in the Poor House. He, on July 29th, was slightly injured by roof falling in the Four Foot Seam from which he recovered but was sent to the Workhouse on account of his brain for which he had been medically attended previous to the accident. Inquest attended and inquiry. Non-Comprised.

DAVIS William - 1881 - 03/05/1881 – Age 60 – Loader. Clay Cross No.3, Clay Cross Iron and Coal Co., Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Fall of roof whilst loading coals.

DAVIS William - 1883 - 16/02/1883 – Age 60 – Blacksmith. Hall End, Morris and Shaw, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Beam of wood fell upon him.

DAVIS William - 1887 - 27/07/1887 – Age 18 - Door boy. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Steam Coal Co., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Knocked down by a pony and run over by train while attempting to pass. Road 7ft. high and 8ft. wide, dipping 3ins. per yard.

DAVIS William - 1888 - 23/12/1888 – Age 32 - Boiler maker. Brithdir, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Bargoed, Glamorgan. He slipped from the top of a range of boilers and fell in to the stoke hole a height of about eight feet. It appears that he had for some time previously been in a bad state of health.

DAVISON Robert - 1889 - 15/02/1889 – Age 44 – Hewer. Derwent, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Medmosley, Co. Durham. When pushing a tub inbye he slipped and the tub ran back crushing him against another tub which was following.

DAWBER J.T. (injured) - 1883 - 18/07/1883 – Age 42 – Miner. Foggs, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof at face.

DAWBER Richard - 1884 - 09/06/1884 – Age 51 – Collier. Prospect, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was building a pack when a heavy fall of roof occurred from stone slips capping 10 or 12 props.

DAWBER Thomas - 1887 - 01/05/1887 – Age 20 - Appt. joiner. Pemberton, Jonathan Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was helping to put up a pulley frame down the pit when a piece of coal fell from the side which was almost perpendicular.

DAWE Edward - 1883 - 15/08/1883 – Age 19 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fracture of the capstan rope which was being used to draw the men to surface. 12 killed.

DAWE Richard - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 20. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Trimdon Cemetery Single man.

DAWES E. - 1883 - 19/11/1883 – Age 42 – Horsekeeper. Manor, Nunnery Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Crushed between cage and shaft when about to ascend owing to cage moving when he was partly in.

DAWES James - 1889 - 11/01/1889 – Age 52 – Dataller. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. Died 12th Jan. A full tub ran amain down an incline and this man incautiously left the refuge hole and was overtaken by it.

DAWSON James - 1885 - 17/04/1885 – Age 43 – Miner. Bridgewater, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal fall of roof stone while tilling out coal which he had blown down in a dirt bay in the Seven Feet Mine. His own error of judgement.

DAWSON James - 1889 - 28/01/1889 – Age 56 – Miner. Upleatham (metalliferous), Pease and Partners Ltd., Marske, Yorkshire. Crushed by fall of ironstone whilst barring it down a sudden fall took place.

DAWSON John - 1880 - 15/05/1880 – Age 38 – Collier. Kimblesworth, Elliot and Hunter, Durham, Co. Durham. Fall of stone while holing a place through into a wall he cut the place through when a large fall of stone took place.

DAWSON John - 1884 - 04/07/1884 – Age 59 - Foreman. Cossall, Cossall Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Fell off railway truck while unloading timber.

DAWSON Robson - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 34 – Packer. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

DAWSON T. - 1883 - 31/01/1883 – Age 33 – Miner. Royton Oldham, Middleton and Rochdale Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof coal.

DAWSON Thomas - 1881 - 13/08/1881 – Age 40 – Bottomer. Eldin No.1, Eldin Colliery Co., Bonnyrigg, Edinburgh. Fall of roof on road within four yards of the shaft (New Pit) Longwall.

DAWSON Thomas - 1885 - 19/02/1885 – Age 45 – Collier. Bickerstaffe, Bromilow Forster and Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made. In getting down his coals he bared a slip at the face causing a stone to fall out between the face and the props. The place seemed to he fairly well timbered.

DAWSON W. - 1883 - 18/12/1883 – Age 14 - Pony driver. Whitfield, Chatterley Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Killed by a full tub at bottom of jig while passing.

DAWSON Walter - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 49 – Furnaceman. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

DAWSON William - 1887 - 09/02/1887 – Age 13 – Driver. Nettlesworth, Elliot and Hunter, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Fall of stone at end of broken jud. Deceased left his work at flat and went inbye where he had no business.

DAY Henry - 1888 - 24/08/1888 – Age 47 – Loader. Teversal, Stanton Iron Co., Teversal, Derbyshire. Fall of side while loading coal.

DAY John - 1882 - 15/04/1882 – Age 28 – Stallman. Langwith, Sheepbridge Iron and Coal Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof.

DAY Joseph - 1882 - 02/05/1882 – Age 31 – Deputy. Addesley, WS Dugdale, Atherstone, Nottinghamshire. Explosion of gas 31 killed.

DAY Matthew - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 13. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion of gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed.

DAYKIN William Henry - 1887 - 25/11/1887 – Age 22 – Loader. Trowell Moor, Dunn Bros., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Bringing down a full tub down a gate with his back against the front of tub locker came out and the tub ran on him.

DEACON Richard Henry - 1880 - 24/10/1880 – Age 12 - Door boy. Gelli Steam Coal, Thomas and Griffiths, Ystrad-Rhondda, Glamorgan. Falling under a tram of rubbish.

DEAKIN G. - 1885 - 16/07/1885 – Age 15 - Plane boy. Hoyland Silkstone, Hoyland Silkstone Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by wheel of main tail rope.

DEAKIN George - 1880 - 04/03/1880 – Age 34 – Loader. Seymour, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Staveley, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Had been loading coals. Men loading at night. 2 killed.

DEAKIN H. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 53 – Deputy. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once, one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.

DEAKIN John - 1883 - 07/09/1883 – Age 45 - Header Hall, End Morris and Shaw, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Shot exploded before he could get clear away. Had made his jarmin of touch paper.

DEAKIN Joseph - 1887 - 13/01/1887 – Age 42 – Miner. Chanters 5 Foot, Fletcher Burrows & Co., Lancashire. Fatal fall of coal which wheeled round a sprag whilst he was holing at the loose end corner of a long wall face. Died 25th. Insufficient spragging.

DEAN Charles - 1885 - 17/04/1885 – Age 40 – Collier. Trafalgar, Trafalgar Colliery Co. Ltd., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fall of coal. He was holing the coal and cut into a slip which let the coal off. He died next day.

DEAN Frederick - 1889 - 24/01/1889 – Age 37 – Dataler. Teversal, Stanton Iron Works Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fall of stone from the side whilst repairing a roadway. 2 killed.

DEAN J. - 1881 - 24/08/1881 – Age 47 – Collier. Whitfield, Chatterley Co., Tunstall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

DEAN James - 1884 - 31/05/1884 – Age 65 - Labourer. Sovereign, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Caught between railway waggon buffers on siding.

DEAN James - 1889 - 28/11/1889 – Age 30 – Foreman. Eatock, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Lancashire. Killed in erecting a pair of sheer legs 80 feet in length which when partly raised fell and struck him the hoisting balk underneath having slipped. Inspection and inquest attended.

DEAN T. - 1884 - 04/07/1884 – Age 46 – Collier. West Ardsley, North Yorkshire Iron and Coal Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

DEAN Thomas - 1880 - 21/01/1880 – Loader. Leycett, Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

DEANS John (non-fatal) - 1887 - 27/05/1887 – Drawer. Springside No.11, A Kenneth and Sons, Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Fall of roof.

DEANS William - 1883 - 01/02/1883 – Age 25 – Screenman. Douglas Park, John Wilson, Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggon, which he was bringing forward to screens.

DEANS William - 1887 - 07/06/1887 – Age 32 – Hewer. Browney, Bell Bros Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Fall of stone in a narrow place after a shot had been fired which laid open a slip.

DEARDEN James - 1888 - 07/07/1888 – Age 36 – Dataler. Pewfall No.3, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were retimbering in an old road which was much crushed and after setting up a bar were taking out an old one when the side came over carrying two or three bars with it and burying the two deceased.

DEAVY John (non-fatal) - 1889 - 05/03/1889 – Age 36 – Miner. Dalmeny, Dalmeny Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Fall of roof bladder ruptured. 218 days off.

DEEMING John - 1883 - 25/10/1883 – Age 35 – Stallman. Hall End, Morris and Shaw, Tamworth, Staffordshire. Fall of roof whilst setting timber.

DEFTY Henry - 1887 - 24/10/1887 – Age 36 – Shifter. Walker, Walker Coal Co., Walker, Northumberland. Explosion of coal dust, firedamp and air. 8 killed.

DEFTY John - 1885 - 16/08/1885 – Age 32 - Master shifter. Kimblesworth, Elliot and Hunter, Durham, Co. Durham. Killed by the breaking of a crab rope while engaged repairing shaft. They were thrown to the bottom of the pit about 250 feet. 3 killed.

DEFTY Richard - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 28 – Stoneman. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

DEGNON Francis - 1888 - 21/06/1888 – Age 36 – Collier. Tannochside, Owners of Chapelhall, Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on drawing road, longwall.

DEGVILLE William - 1888 - 16/08/1888 – Age 34 – Stallman. Hope, Watkinson and Gittings, Pelsall, Staffordshire. Fall of roof coal in a stall from overhanging slips. The stallman was killed on the spot but the loader died of his injuries on the 8th of November. 2 killed.

DEIGNAN John - 1884 - 28/03/1884 – Age 14 – Driver. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Fall of stone in main engine landing.

DELANEY James - 1888 - 10/12/1888 – Age 27 – Drawer. Wood, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A drawer was taking his full tub down an incline when his scotch broke and the tub overpowering him ran into the deceased who was going out with his loaded tub.

DELBRIDGE Richard (injured) - 1888 - 02/02/1888 – Age 15 – Miner. Trevaunance United (metalliferous), St. Agnes, Scorrier, Cornwall. Engaged in putting in a new ladder sollar when the plank turned under his feet and he consequently fell about 12 feet.

DELVIN John - 1889 - 27/03/1889 – Age 46 – Miner. Swinhill, George Miller, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof.

DEMPSEY Thomas - 1882 - 10/02/1882 – Age 38 – Metalman. Meadows, Lamb and Moore, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest at tended. Deceased was ramming a shot in stone work with a copper stemmer, when, by some unexplained means the shot exploded.

DEMPSTER George (non-fatal) - 1888 - 28/01/1888 - Asst. bottomer. Westburn No.2, Westburn Colliery Co., Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. Slipped and the cage came down on his foot.

DEVEN Benjamin - 1885 - 21/07/1885 – Age 26 – Haulier. Mardy, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Fall of stone. He was sitting on a tram of rubbish in the double parting when suddenly three pairs of timber broke and he was killed. The timbers were set from three to four feet apart and middle propped. A squeeze from a face of long work below probably was the cause of the accident.

DEVINE Alexander (non-fatal) - 1889 - 08/04/1889 – Brusher. Enterkine No.9, George Taylor and Co., Ayr, Ayrshire. Fall of roof at brushing face.

DEVINE Edward - 1888 - 28/05/1888 – Age 17 – Drawer. Drumpeller No.1, Drumpeller Coal Co., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fell off dook race while he was riding contrary to orders.

DEVINE Felix - 1881 - 08/04/1881 – Age 64 – Screenman. Chilton, South Durham Coal Co., Ferry Hill, Co. Durham. Severe injuries to head by falling off screens on to ground. Died 4th July.

DEVINE Felix - 1886 - 16/12/1886 – Age 48 – Hewer. Usworth, John Bowes and Partners, Usworth, Co. Durham. Crushed by tubs on engine plane.

DEVINE Patrick - 1887 - 10/02/1887 – Age 33 – Stone miner. Auchinraith, Merry and Cunningham, Blantyre, Lanarkshire. He went back before shot went off.

DEVLIN Edward - 1880 - 28/01/1880 – Age 32 – Bottomer. Foulshields, Robert Henderson, Whitburn, Linlithgow. The engineman felt something jamming the cage and stopped it. Deceased was found squeezed between the cage and the door heads. There was no one else at the pit bottom.

DEVONPORT or DAVENPORT Andrew - 1889 - 31/01/1889 – Age 21 – Hewer. East Howle, Carlton Iron Co., Ferry Hill, Co. Durham. Suddenly crushed on back and legs by a fall of stone. Died on the 10th of November.

DEW William - 1884 - 20/06/1884 – Age 15 – Labourer. Witley, Witley Colliery Co., Halesowen, Staffordshire. When assisting the bricklayers at the mouth of the shaft he fell unseen to the bottom, a depth of 250 yards.

DEWAR Alexander - 1883 - 26/12/1883 – Age 14 – Drawer. Falfield, Thomas Brown and Sons, Kilconquhar, Fife. Fell with a loaded tub from a mid-working. There was no gate on.

DEWAR Peter (non-fatal) - 1889 – 28/01/1889 – Age 40 – Manager. Hallcraig, Coltness Iron Co Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fell down staple due to breaking of windlass rope. 2 injured. 41 days off.

DEWHURST F. - 1881 – 12/12/1881 – Hanger-on. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by cage at bottom of shaft.

DIAMOND Hugh (non-fatal) - 1889 - 15/03/1889 – Miner. Bogside No.1, Eglinton Iron Co., Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Fall of coal.

DICK Aaron - 1881 - 15/07/1881 – Age 55 – Hewer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Fall of roof on main rolley way while walking inbye to his work.

DICK William (non-fatal) - 1887 - 10/11/1887 - Asst. bottomer. Kirkwood No.1, Kirkwood Coal Co., Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fell into the cage seat and was crushed by cage.

DICKEN John - 1885 - 01/04/1885 – Age 18 – Filler. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A small stone fell from between two slips knocking deceased down with his forehead against a shovel which cut into his brain. The place was well timbered but the stone fell out from between the bars.

DICKINSON John - 1883 - 02/01/1883 – Age 13 – Driver. Brandon, Strakers and Love, Brandon, Co. Durham. While driving tubs outbye in Busty Seam they got off the way turned over and crushed him against side.

DICKINSON John - 1888 - 05/04/1888 – Age 48 – Collier. Hindley Hall, Pearson Knowles Coal and Iron Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased was finishing a pillar and went round to the goaf side where the timber had been drawn to get some loose coal, when the roof fell on him.

DICKINSON Richard - 1887 - 02/09/1887 – Age 20 – Drawer. Duxbury Mill, Thomas Whittle, Lancashire. Fatal. Suffocation in blackdamp into which he went to fetch a shovel contrary to the orders of the fireman and the advice of the collier with whom he worked the damp having come out of the goaf with a fall of the barometer, and had been found and fenced off by the fireman that morning. The question of a prosecution was considered in this case but not proceeded with.

DIDLOCK S. - 1880 - 19/05/1880 – Age 43 – Blower. Wednesbury Oak, P Williams and Sons, Tipton, Staffordshire. Premature explosion of powder on 14th May. He was charging his shot hole he accidentally threw some powder into the flame of his candle and thus ignited the contents of his cannister, which contained 2.5 lbs. of powder. Died this day.

DIGGLE Henry (injured) - 1889 - 14/12/1889 – Age 39 – Labourer. Green Lane, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd., Lancashire. Wrist broken by falling 10 feet 6 inches off a gangway at the pit brow as he was helping to rail. Inspection and inquiry.

DIGGLE Robert - 1884 – 04/03/1884 – Dayman. Anderton Hall, B and R Fisher and Co., Lancashire. Leg broken, fall of roof which he was wedging down.

DILLING Edward - 1886 – 24/09/1886 – Age 30 – Miner. Drakewells (metalliferous), Drakewells Mining Co., Ginnislake, Cornwall. Was working a stope near an old shaft that had been filled with waste sand from the dressing floors when a run of this sand took place and he was smothered.

DILLING William - 1880 - 15/01/1880 – Age 17 - Asst. blacksmith. Prince of Wales (metalliferous), Prince of Wales Mining Co., Harrowbarrow. His clothes took fire from a bar of iron, red-hot at one end, which he was about to cool in water, and he died three weeks after the accident from the severity of the burns.

DINES John - 1888 - 30/11/1888 – Age 38 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. Fall of stone from roof, he had just fired a shot which had loosened the stone and it fell while he was filling a tub near it.

DINGSDALE Daniel - 1880 - 23/11/1880 – Age 22 - Hooker-on. Denton Lane, Chamber Colliery Co., Chadderton, Lancashire. Leg broken. Coal falling as he was taking it down from the side of the engine brow.

DINGSDALE George - 1887 - 28/05/1887 – Age 21 – Miner. Udston, Udston Coal Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas 73 killed.

DINNAN Patrick (non-fatal) - 1889 - 25/03/1889 – Age 32 – Miner. Blairhill, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Perth. Fall of roof. Not yet resumed.

DINNING Bob - 1886 - 15/04/1886 – Age 14 – Screenboy. Medmosley, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Consett, Co. Durham. Fell off screen into waggon, about three feet, worked two days after and died suddenly at home accident not cause of death.

DINNING John - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 51 – Packer. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

DINNING Thomas - 1889 - 11/01/1889 – Age 33 – Hewer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Injury to side by fall of stone and he died from inflammation on the 25th inst.

DITCHFIELD Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 13/08/1885 – Age 33 – Dataler. Brisop Hall Yard, Brinsop Hall Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Head and leg bruised by fall of roof in a gateway where he was filling dirt that had been blown down. The stone fell from an unseen slip and may have appeared safe when examined as is stated to have been shortly before.
