The winding rope broke as they were putting in a signal. It was an old rope but they had examined it and thought it to be safe. 2 injured.

WOODWARD F.J. - 1878 - 16/07/1878 – Age 25 – Sinker. Blakeley Hall, Bromford Colliery Co., Oldbury, Worcester. While the sinking bowk was ascending it fell off the foothook attached to the winding rope. He had sole charge of the bowk when it left the pit bottom.

WOODWARD James - 1876 - 26/06/1876 – Age 26 – Header. Birley, Jeffcock and Dunn, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Explosion of firedamp. Had worked with safety lamps previous to the morning of the explosion. Fireman neglected to thoroughly examine the heading before the men went to work. The fireman was committed for manslaughter and the manager and underviewer censured by the Corner’s jury. 5 killed.
