DORRICK Edward - 1876 - 21/06/1876 – Age 55 - Labourer. Blaina, Blaina Co., Blaina, Monmouth. Injured by trucks died 26th.

DOUGAN Cornelius - 1879 - 23/09/1879 – Age 55 – Brusher. Carfin, William Dixon Ltd., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Chokedamp on previous occasions come from an old waste but the men were able to retreat to safety on being warned of its approach. On this occasion they delayed too long and fell before reaching fresh air. 2 killed.

DOUGLAS Charles - 1877 - 30/06/1877 – Age 35 - Labourer. Tocketts (ironstone), JW Pease and partners, Guisborough, Yorkshire. Leg broken by waggon running over it building air crossing in mine he had his leg over the rail while holding a line and did not see the waggon coming. Amputation necessary. Died 6th July.

DOUGLAS George - 1879 - 08/05/1879 – Age 64 - Asst. onsetter. Brotton (metalliferous), Morrison and Co., Saltburn, Yorkshire. Crushed to death by cage coming on him he went under the cage while running to clean out the cage hole. He properly ought to have stopped the cage.

DOVE Thomas - 1872 - 02/02/1872 – Age 26 – Sinker. Littleburn, North Brancepeth Coal Co., Durham, Co. Durham. Winch rope ran amain and knocked them out of the kibble causing them to fall to the bottom of the shaft. 2 killed.

DRYLIE David - 1876 - 13/01/1876 – Age 25 - Collier. Townhill, Townhill Coal Co., Dunfermline, Fife. While attempting to cross the open shaft on a bunton at a mid-working he slipped his footing.

DRYSDALE Thomas - 1876 - 06/06/1876 – Age 39 - Hewer. Seghill, Laycock and Nicholson, Newcastle, Northumberland. Crushed by cage.

DUCKER John - 1874 - 14/10/1874 – Age 35 - Hooker-on. Eleanor, Eleanor Colliery Co. Ltd., Queensferry, Flint. Injured by cage while passing across pit bottom. Died 26th Nov.

DUCKERING James - 1878 - 08/10/1878 – Age 22 - Miner. Boosbeck (ironstone), Stevenson Jacques and Co. Guisborough Yorkshire. While taking off a corner of a pillar he drilled a hole nearly through the stone. After charging and lighting the shot he went round other side and the shot blew through and killed him.

DUCKWORTH Michael - 1879 - 16/07/1878 – Age 20 - Miner. Darwen Fireclay, Ralph Entwistle and Co. Ltd., Over Darwen, Lancashire. A shot which it seems he thought had missed fire going off on his returning too soon.

DUDDLE Joseph - 1873 - 16/04/1873 – Age 26 – Coalminer. Ellesmere, Bridgewater Trust, Worsley, Lancashire. Side stone falling as he was holing.

DUDLEY, John - 1874 - 18/11/1874 – Age 70 – Stoker. Neachells Hall, Barbors Field Co., Willenhall, Stafford. Deceased clothes caught fire on 17th. Died next day.

DUFFIE John - 1875 - 05/11/1875 – Age 40 – Brusher. Chapelside, Ferrier and Strain, New Monkland, Lanarkshire. He was taking down stone which fell on him (longwall).
DUFFIN James - 1876 - 20/05/1876 – Age 18 - Holer. Deep Main, J Oakes and Co., Riddings, Derbyshire. Fall of roof breaking away from top slip running over the coals which were being holed at the time. The stall had only three days previous to this resumed work after standing during a long strike. 4 killed.

DULSTIN Ebor - 1873 - 17/01/1873 – Age 14 – Jigger. New Main, Butterley Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Crushed whilst jigging by an empty tub which ran amain.

DUNCAN John - 1871 - 31/08/1871 – Age 45 – Blacksmith. Polton, James Eaglesham, Dalkeith, Mid Lothian. Drum got out of gear and ran amain with him and another in the kettle. They fell into 10 fathoms of water. It was a sinking pit.

DUNNING J. - 1879 - 10/06/1879 – Age 27 – Pikeman. Cannock and Rugeley, Cannock and Rugeley Colliery Co., Hednesford, Stafford. Returning to work after a shot which had failed to bring down the coal he began to remove it when the roof coal gave way from an unseen slip and killed him.

DUNSTAN James - 1874 - 10/03/1874 – Age 13 - Miner. East Wheal Basset (metalliferous), East Wheal Basset Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. In ascending to the surface the boy fell into the shaft two casing boards having been accidentally knocked out leaving an open gap by the side of the sollar.

DURKIN James - 1879 - 16/12/1879 – Age 26 - Labourer. Taylor, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. He was lowering two waggons down an incline he was sitting on one of the breaks. They ran away coming into contact with other waggons when he was thrown off and fell between the buffers.

DUXBURY Thomas - 1872 - 07/09/1872 – Age 12 – Coalminer. Aspen, Thomas Simpson and Co., Oswaldtwistle Lancashire. Crushed by the leg of the pumping engine where he apparently went to lie down unknown to any one as he was going to his work on the night shift. Of White Ash Lane, Oswaldtwistle, was on Tuesday found dead about 5.40 a.m. in the engine house at Aspen Colliery, Oswaldtwistle by the underlooker. He was fearfully bruised and cut in various parts of his body. He ought to have gone down the pit to work at 10.00 p.m. the previous evening, but instead seems to have gone into the engine house and fallen asleep under the machinery which is worked during the night. His death apparently resulted from injuries by the machine which caught him while still asleep". Bacup and Rossendale News.
