CRAZE Thomas - 1884 - 30/09/1884 – Age 22 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Explosion of missed hole charged with dynamite that he was engaged boring out.

CREE Peter (non-fatal) - 1889 - 20/05/1889 – Fireman. Dykes No.2, Eglinton Iron Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire. Explosion of firedamp.

CRELLIN James - 1882 - 16/11/1882 – Age 44 – Shaftsman. Foxdale (metalliferous), Isle of Man, Isle of Man. He was engaged in replacing wooden guides in a shaft, and had nailed a plank to a dividing in order to stand upon it while at work, unfortunately the nail did penetrate the dividing properly and the plank slipped causing Crellin to fall down the shaft.

CRESSWELL Ernest Smith - 1889 - 19/12/1889 – Age 12 – Driver. Ireland, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Staveley, Derbyshire. Crushed between full trucks while crossing the branch railway to get into the workmen’s train.

CRESSWELL Samuel - 1885 - 22/07/1885 – Age 23 – Collier. New Watnall, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Caught his foot against a pair of horses shafts, fell and injured his knee, injured 24th Nov. leg amputated in St. Thomas' hospital, London and died a few days after.

CRESSWELL William - 1888 - 26/06/1888 – Age 57 – Pikeman. Hungary Hill, Rufford and Co., Stourbridge, Worcester. Fall of roof coal in working face. Cause encircling slips and a smooth parting.

CRESWELL M. - 1882 - 01/06/1882 – Age 42 – Collier. Tinsley Park, B Huntsman, Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

CREWE John - 1887 - 28/05/1887 – Age 22 – Miner. Udston, Udston Coal Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas 73 killed.

CRIBBINS George - 1889 - 22/06/1889 – Age 41 – Deputy. Walbottle, Walbottle Coal Co., Walbottle, Northumberland. Fall of roof while drawing out props.

CRICHTON David - 1887 - 28/05/1887 – Age 20 – Miner. Udston, Udston Coal Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas 73 killed.

CRIMES John Thomas - 1888 - 20/12/1888 – Age 31 – Labourer. Clifton Workyard, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatally crushed between the end of a railway waggon and the stage at the end of the corn store the waggon having spring buffers going apparently closer up than he expected.

CRINGLE John Thomas (injured) - 1882 - 12/10/1882 – Age 52 – Shaftsman. Foxdale (metalliferous), Isle of Man, Isle of Man. Fell 12 feet from a ladder sollar while sitting upon it he was supposed to have been seized by sudden giddiness. 11 weeks off.

CRINGLE Philip (injured) - 1886 - 10/11/1886 – Age 25 – Shaftman. Foxdale (metalliferous), Stepped into a kibble hoisted by a compressed air engine without waiting for a man to lower him. The kibble dropped 17 fathoms. Five and a half weeks off.

CRITCHLEY Henry - 1885 - 14/11/1885 – Age 17 – Dataler. Collins Green, Collins Green Colliery Co. Ltd., Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. Inspection made. Some men including a fireman had been putting up a drum underground and had completed the work when a stone fell from the roof close to where they had fixed the supports for the drum and it fell on deceased who was fastening a rail at the time.

CRITCHLEY John (injured) - 1888 - 19/03/1888 – Age 33 – Miner. Clifton Arley, Executors of Colonel Hargreaves, Burnley, Lancashire. Spine hurt by fall of roof stone which broke off between the props and the working face.

CRITCHLEY Richard (injured) - 1880 - 27/12/1880 – Miner. Blainscough Hall, Blainscough Hall Colliery Co., Coppull, Lancashire. Hurt. Roof falling from two small faults Critchley was holing. Arley Mine. 3 injured.

CRITCHLEY William - 1880 - 20/12/1880 – Age 17 – Drawer. Laffack, David Bromilow and Co., Garswood, St. Helens, Lancashire. A fall of coal from over the sprags, which had been set preparatory to their commencing holing.

CRITCHTOW J. - 1884 - 24/12/1884 – Age 33 – Jigger. Berry Hill, J Warrington, Stoke, Staffordshire. Crushed between waggon on incline.

CROASDALE John (injured) - 1889 - 28/03/1889 – Age 67 - Stone miner. Long Bank (stone), Windle Ashworth and Taylor, Lancashire. Both legs broken by sandstone rock falling from the face outside the mine. Inspection and inquiry.

CROCKETT James - 1883 - 24/07/1883 – Age 60 – Pikeman. Old Buffery, Barker and Wood, Dudley, Worcester. Smothered by a fall of slack caused by his drawing timber in a manner contrary to orders.

CROFT John - 1881 - 13/10/1881 – Age 43 – Miner. Priestner’s No.2, Wigan Coal and Iron Co Ltd., Westleigh, Lancashire. Mistake of a banksman, a tub upon the cage in which the and six others were ascending. 2 killed.

CROFT Robert (injured) - 1884 - 08/10/1884 – Age 28 – Fireman. Lower Hall, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Tub which he was using.

CROFT Thomas - 1882 - 30/10/1882 – Age 35 – Miner. Spa (ironstone), Gjers Mills and Co., Guisborough, Yorkshire. Fall of a piece top dogger while baring out a piece of ironstone.

CROFTS John William (injured) - 1888 - 17/01/1888 – Miner. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Back injured in riding up Trencherbone brow. He was riding on a full tub contrary to orders and was hurt whilst getting off before reaching the top of the brow.

CROLL Patrick (non-fatal) - 1889 - 31/05/1889 – Miner. Southerhouse No.1, Robert Pettigrew, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

CROMPTON J. - 1883 - 26/12/1883 – Age 22 – Miner. Linnyshaw, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof from a slip.

CROMPTON James - 1889 - 05/04/1889 – Age 18 – Labourer. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. It appeared that this boy had been allowed to oil the screening machinery then in motion and was eventually caught and killed.

CROMPTON William (injured) - 1887 - 28/01/1887 – Age 39 – Miner. Parker, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Leg fractured by fall of stone from a slip. It fell unexpectedly after he had tried to pull it down.

CRONE William - 1883 - 13/12/1883 – Age 18 - Landing boy. Wearmouth, Wearmouth Coal Co., Wearmouth, Co. Durham. Fall of stone.

CROOK Ralph - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 42 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

CROOK William - 1885 - 24/12/1885 – Age 30 – Miner. Lower Hall, Westleigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal. While travelling gig brow he was caught by the tubs. He had been cautioned not to go into the brow while they were gigging. The manholes were all right and the brow generally in good order. His own error.

CROOKS Frederick - 1886 - 14/05/1886 – Age 37 – Collier. Holbrook No.3, J and G Wells Ltd., Eckington, Derbyshire. Fall of coals.

CROPPER John - 1887 - 10/06/1887 – Age 65 – Miner. Grime Bridge, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Not comprised by the Act. Seized with an apoplectic fit in his working place and died soon after being removed home. He worked 50 years for the owners and had enjoyed good health until three months ago.

CROSBY James - 1886 - 22/11/1886 – Age 15 – Driver. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. While driving a set of tubs to a landing he came too quickly the cotter came out and the limbers fell off he was thrown under the tubs and run over.

CROSBY John - 1880 - 01/11/1880 – Age 28 – Gangrider. St. Helens, St. Helens Collieries Co Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Deceased and two other men were taking a small air receiver down the incline and, thoughtlessly, going in front of it, he was crushed against a prop.

CROSLAND J. - 1882 - 29/03/1882 – Age 27 – Collier. Dixon, Farnley Iron Co., Leeds, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

CROSS C. - 1882 - 01/04/1882 – Age 27 – Collier. Darton Hall, Darton Hall Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal.

CROSS Francis - 1886 - 31/12/1886 – Age 16 - Hooker up. No.2 Kelton (metalliferous), William Baird and Co., Knockmurton, Cumberland. Fall of stone from roof. While engaged coupling two bogeys together a stone fell from the roof and struck him on the head, inflicting injuries from which he died in half an hour.

CROSS G. - 1884 - 18/12/1884 – Collier. Silverdale, Butterley Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

CROSS George - 1888 - 07/05/1888 – Age 29 – Collier. Rainford, Rainford Colliery Co. Ltd., Rainford, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased fell from the cage as he was descending the pit. It appeared that he was subject to fits which was unknown to the officials although it was apparently well known to the men.

CROSS James - 1881 - 27/09/1881 – Age 14 – Driver. Granville, Granville Colliery Co., Swadlincote, Derbyshire. Caught and crushed between two loaded tubs.

CROSS John - 1883 - 27/12/1883 – Age 17 - Landing boy. Hebburn, Tyne Coal Co., Co. Durham. Crushed by tubs on incline plane.

CROSS Thomas - 1880 - 21/01/1880 – Collier. Leycett, Crewe Coal Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp. 62 killed.

CROSS William - 1889 - 02/03/1889 – Age 39 – Mason. Ynyshir, Ynyshir Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Run over by journey of trams on engine plane where he had been unloading a train of stones. The rider had asked him if he was clear for the journey to go on before he signalled it away.

CROSSAN John - 1885 - 23/01/1885 – Age 53 – Collier. Drumshangie, Drumshangie Coal Co., Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face long wall.

CROSSDALE Stephen (injured) - 1885 - 04/05/1885 - Hooker on. Ellerbeck, Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Arm fractured by something falling down the shaft as he was leaning on a rail at the yard coal mouthing. The shaft had been examined and found in good order immediately before. It was not ascertained what substance fell. Manager undertook to have the rail set further.

CROSSLAND R. - 1887 - 08/08/1887 – Age 67 – Nightwatchman. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Knocked down by loco. Died 10th Aug.

CROSTON John (injured) - 1884 - 08/07/1884 – Age 31 – Miner. Snydale Hall, Col. Le Gendre, Starkie, Lancashire. Cage being started as he was repeating the signal to ascend.

CROSTON William - 1883 - 09/08/1883 – Age 30 – Miner. Ellerbeck, Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof.

CROUDACE John - 1886 - 11/12/1886 – Age 39 – Hewer. Tees Hetton, Tees Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Evenwood, Co. Durham. Severe internal sprain while lifting a tub on to the rails. Died 12th Dec.

CROW David - 1885 - 20/04/1885 – Fireman. Bromley Lane, Smith and Groucott, Kingswinsford, Staffordshire. Died 28th. Apr. Explosion of steam boiler.

CROW Henry - 1889 - 28/06/1889 – Age 61 – Miner. Upleatham (metalliferous), Pease and Partners Ltd., Marske, Yorkshire. Struck on the head by a prop which was knocked out by a fall of stone which had been barred down.

CROW or CROWE Samuel - 1882 - 11/09/1882 – Age 30 – Rolleyway man. Mickley, Mickley Coal Co., Mickley, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof.

CROW William - 1882 - 07/08/1882 – Age 16 – Haulier. North Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Killed by falling under trams.

CROWDING Samuel - 1885 - 03/08/1885 – Age 46 - Horse keeper. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Kicked by a horse in the stables and died on the 6th. from the injuries.

CROWLEY Daniel - 1886 - 09/12/1886 – Age 38 – Stower. George, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Collision of railway trucks on self-acting incline between the George and Lower Duffryn collieries in consequence of a stone having been wilfully placed in the self-acting points below the meetings, thus preventing their working. Eleven men were at the time riding up to their work. Riding on this incline was prohibited, and in some instances parties had been prosecuted and others fined for so doing. 5 killed.

CROWTHER H. - 1884 - 30/10/1884 – Age 24 – Hurrier. Simon Wood, Earl Fitzwilliam, Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

CROWTHER H. - 1886 - 29/05/1886 – Age 16 – Collier. Hanwood, S Hatherton, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Fall of roof.

CROWTHER John - 1883 - 27/07/1883 – Age 15 – Hurrier. Park, Park Coal Co., Dewsbury, Yorkshire Fall of roof.

CROWTHER Thomas - 1888 - 23/11/1888 – Age 36 – Collier. Wrexham, Wrexham & Acton Collieries Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was working out a pillar and intended setting a prop before getting out the last piece of coal but finding the roof knock solid he neglected to do so and when he pulled down the coal the roof came with it knocking out several props.

CROZIER John - 1889 - 16/09/1889 – Age 49 – Waggoner. Earnock, John Watson, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggons.

CRUDDAS Christopher - 1889 - 09/01/1889 – Age 64 – Shifter. Black Boy, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. Died from natural causes while following his usual employment as a dataller on the engine road. Ventilation all right. Not comprised under the Act.

CRUDGE William. H. - 1887 - 24/11/1887 – Age 19 – Collier. Merthyr Vale, Nixon’s Navigation Coal Co. Ltd., Merthyr, Glamorgan. Fall of a slip or coal which was spragged.

CRUISE Charles - 1882 - 05/06/1882 – Age 13 – Driver. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Fell before tubs in a landing while riding on chain contrary to orders and was run over and killed.

CRUISE James - 1887 - 21/03/1887 – Age 46 – Stoneman. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Burnt by powder while forcing a powder charge into a hole with rammer it exploded. Died 7th October.

CRUISE James - 1887 - 21/03/1887 – Age 46 – Stoneman. Murton, Strakers and Love, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Severe lacerations to body by rope on engine plane while crossing it he became entangled and was drawn against binding sheave. Died on 21st.

CRUISE Joseph - 1886 - 08/08/1886 – Age 34 – Stoneman. Whiston, Wigan and Whiston Coal Co. Ltd., Prescot, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Some men were engaged in getting roof down and packing it alongside the road when a heavy stone fell from over the pack capping three props and struck deceased. The man appeared to have disturbed the props when shovelling up the dirt.

CULLING William - 1884 - 10/01/1884 – Age 40 – Collier. South Wales, South Wales Colliery Co., Monmouth. Crushed by a tram. Deceased and another man were walking behind two empty trams which a horse was pulling up a rise heading. The pin fastening the shafts to the first tram came out and both of them ran back. One man got into a stall road but the other was caught and killed on the spot. The pin had two inches hold through the plate and was probably jolted out by a sudden jerk.

CULSHAW William - 1885 - 24/03/1885 – Age 16 - Pony driver. Bickerstaffe, Bromilow Forster and Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was taking out a journey of loaded tubs and appeared to have been going too fast when the front tub on which he was riding got off the rails and was turned upside down on to the top of him. The road was in fair order and with a slight incline.

CUMBA John (injured) - 1881 - 18/01/1881 – Miner. Berehaven, Berhaven Mining Co. Ltd., Allihies Co. Cork, Ireland. Killed by dynamite exploding. No inquest held the cartridge being frozen they thoughtlessly warming it on the top of a hot iron tube instead of with warm water as recommended. 2 killed 5 injured. (Arm and eyes).

Deceased was drawing bars and props in a disused road, and appears to have been very careless in doing the work, as it might have been carried out without any danger had he used ordinary precautions.

CURNOW John (injured) - 1889 - 12/07/1889 – Age 29 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Part of the lode in a stope in which Curnow was working below the 200 fathoms level fell on his right arm completely severing the hand. His arm too was so badly bruised that it had to be amputated above the elbow his left leg was fractured and he received several cuts of a minor nature on other parts of his body. Curnow's brother was with him at the time but escaped unhurt. The ground that came away was a scale that had become loosened from the hanging wall about 20 feet above. It seemed a perfectly safe place and the occurrence appears to have been an accident pure and simple.

CURNOW John - 1885 - 24/02/1885 – Age 39 – Miner. Levant (metalliferous), Levant Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Whilst engaged running a stull the stuff choked. Dynamite cartridges failing to start it deceased got on top and was working at the stuff with a pick when it suddenly fell away and he was buried in the debris and squeezed to death.

CURNOW Thomas - 1888 - 20/09/1888 – Age 52 – Miner. Wheal Sisters (metalliferous), Levant, Cornwall. The deceased and his comrade were working in the 40 fathom level. They left their work and went to look for a pitch that is, a place which they could start tributing work on. In pinching down a part of the lode in the level they loosened one of the stulls above them which fell with a burden of debris which was resting upon it on to the deceased man, crushing him so severely that he died. They bad no business in the place they were without permission. The timber was safe if the ground had not been wedged off.

CURPHEY William - 1882 - 04/08/1882 – Age 49 – Miner. Foxdale (metalliferous), Isle of Man, Isle of Man. Unexpected fall of ground from the roof of their stope while they were in the act of putting in timber, which would have supported the ground. 1 killed 1 injured.

CUTHBERT William R. - 1889 - 05/08/1889 – Age 20 – Hewer. Charlaw, Elliot and Hunter, Sacriston, Co. Durham. He received a punctured wound in the palm of his hand with a copper pricker while pushing it into a powder shot and died on the 19th.

CUTHBERTSON George - 1885 - 03/09/1885 – Age 23 - Waiter on. St. Hilda, Haron Coal Co Ltd., Co. Durham. Fell down shaft.

CUTT Thomas - 1886 - 30/12/1886 – Age 49 – Miner. Langland No.2 (metalliferous), S and D Lindow, Cleator, Cumberland. Fall of roof stone. The deceased and his mate had been ordered by the manager to put in three head trees they had put two in and were engaged putting in the third when a fall came without the slightest warning knocking out the two head trees and burying deceased who was got out within 10 minutes but he was quite dead.

CUTTS John - 1888 - 28/12/1888 – Age 18 – Loader. Renishaw No.2, J and G Wells, Eckington, Nottingham. Removing loose dirt from under the top coal at buttock end when end sprag burst out and the coal fell fatally injuring him.
