CORBETT Henry (injured) - 1885 - 25/08/1885 – Age 20 – Filler. Bradford, Four Feet Pit, Bradford Colliery Co., Lancashire. Leg broken by a scale of stone falling from the side of a rise tunnel which he was cleaning up. There was a stretcher, and a prop set within a yard of the stone.

CORFIELD Edward (injured) - 1887 - 29/12/1887 – Age 17 - Pony driver. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Ltd., Lancashire. Leg crushed between tub and side of waggon road he having, whilst bringing out the last journey, jerked the reins to urge on the whole which caused it to swerve and throw off the rails the foremost tub on which he was sitting.
CORFIELD Robert (injured) - 1881 - 24/03/1881 – Age 49 – Pitman. Pennerley (metalliferous), Minsterley. The men were being lowered down a shaft on a swinging sollar, attached to a hemp rope five inches in circumference, for the purpose of taking measurements for new set of timber. The rope was allowed by the men at the surface to slip over the flange at the end of the barrel of the winch, and it got cut through as the barrel turned round and broke. Corfield and Bennett fell with the sollar some 15 or 20 fathoms and very narrowly escaped death. The former had his ankle dislocated and his leg broken above the ankle, whilst the latter had his right leg broken in two places above the knee and had two or three ribs broken. The accident would have been prevented if the flange had been higher and more care taken. 19 and a half weeks off. 2 injured.

CORKER James - 1883 - 01/02/1883 – Age 13 - Incline boy. Birley, South Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Crushed between loaded tubs.
CORKHILL Joseph (injured) - 1885 - 19/12/1885 – Age 35 – Miner. Great Laxey (metalliferous). Premature explosion of a charge of gunpowder while he was ramming in the stemming with an iron bar. Corkill says he was ramming in the third or fourth layer of tamping; the other men say that not so much had been put in. He has lost the sight of one eye. 3 injured Corkhill still unable to work March 1886, the other 2 weeks off.
CORKHILL William (injured) - 1883 - 19/12/1883 – Age 27 – Trammer. Great Laxey (metalliferous). In order to save himself the trouble of waiting he climbed the man engine shaft by ladders in search of a vacant step. After passing through the manhole, he stooped down to keep the trap door open for his comrade and he was struck on the back by the descending step of man engine. 1 week off.
CORKHILL William (injured) - 1885 - 23/05/1885 – Age 35 – Trammer. Great Laxey (metalliferous). Against orders he was riding behind his tram waggon when it capsized and fell on him. 2 weeks off.
CORKILL Joseph (injured) - 1883 - 15/06/1883 – Age 34 – Miner. Great Laxey (metalliferous). He was using an iron bar to tamp a hole charged with powder when it exploded. According to his statement he had put in 6 inches of tamping. 13 weeks off.
CORKILL Richard (injured) - 1886 - 25/11/1886 – Age 30? – Miner. Foxdale (metalliferous). Unexpected fall of side while driving a level, Ear cut. 5 weeks off.
CORMACK Edmund (injured) - 1881 - 14/10/1881 – Age 20 – Waggoner. Earlshill Mining Co., of Ireland. Slievardagh Co., Tipperary, Ireland. Hurt by his waggon upsetting. It seemed that he was running it too fast.

CORNFIELD James (injured) - 1889 - 28/06/1889 – Miner. Bothwell Castle No.2, William Baird and Co., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. While descending the shaft the engineman failed to shut off the steam in time and they were injured by the cage striking the seat. 5 injured.

CORNISH William (injured) - 1888 - 14/06/1888 – Age 55 – Miner. Gawton (metalliferous), Tavistock, Cornwall. While working at the 105 fathom level he used a chain to climb down a winze without sufficiently securing the end of it. The chain slipped and the man went away with it and injured his back. It was the man's duty to have secured the chain himself before using it.

A piece of thin hanging stone had been left undetected on the side of a drawing road and the deceased appeared to have been passing under it though it was not immediately above the road, when it suddenly fell upon him.

COURT George - 1887 - 21/12/1887 – Age 27 - Blacksmith. Ynysfeio, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. He reached the shaft in a hurry just as some colliers who were about to ascend had signalled away the cage and attempted to get on it as it was starting when failing to get a proper hold, he fell back into the sump having probably struck the top of arch 9ft. above the plates.

COUSIN Henry (injured) - 1885 – 21/09/1885 – Age 21 – Miner. Ashtons Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Leg fractured by some of the roof dirt falling with coal which he was taking down at the face of his bay in the Trencherbone Mine. The place was well propped.

COWAN James - 1882 - 18/05/1882 – Age 13 – Collier boy. Home Farm Hamilton, McCulloch and Co., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Crushed by wheel at end of endless rope. The wheel was fenced and he must have gone through it. No person saw the accident.
COWAN John - 1887 – 10/11/1887 – Age 13 – Knocker. Whitehaven, Earl of Lonsdale, Whitehaven, Cumberland. Crushed by tubs on engine plane.
COWBURN Joshua - 1884 – 16/04/1884 – Age 69 – Dataler. Hindley Deep, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The old man was employed to oil the pulleys on the engine plane and it appears that as the empty gang was going down the gang rider saw him standing on the side of the road, but when the gang reached the bottom, he was found in one of the tubs dead. There was plenty of room at the side of the road, and refuge places were provided. The deceased did not appear to have been struck by the tubs, but it is supposed that he went giddy as the tubs passed him at a quick rate, and he fell into that in which he was found. The deceased had complained during the day of not feeling well.

He was resting against a waggon, trimming his safety lamp, when the engine moved another waggon against it.
COWELL George - 1884 - 20/01/1884 – Age 31 – Deputy. Warrens Hall, Earl of Dudley, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Injured 26th Nov. 1883 by a bump which forced a mass of coal from the side of an opening against deceased fatally crushing him. Died this day.

COWELY William (injured) - 1889 - 23/07/1889 – Age 25 – Miner. Foxdale (metalliferous). He was using a rock drill in a level and after having bored three inches there was an explosion which can only be explained by supposing that remnants of gelatine dynamite remained in cracks in the rock from the previous blast. 17 weeks off.

COX George - 1889 – 08/11/1889 – Age 38 – Sinker. Garth, Garth Merthyr Colliery Co., Maesteg, Glamorgan. At the beginning of a shift deceased and three other sinkers descended and as was the custom the bowk stopped at the bottom of the airpipes so that they could be examined. Just as the bowk stopped the deceased shouted, 'We are at the bottom’, jumped out and fell a distance of 8yds.

COX James - 1884 - 11/11/1884 – Age 36 - Gang rider. Wigan Junction, Wigan Junction Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was bringing the journey up the incline when the tubs caught against a door in the brow and deceased was run over by the tubs in attempting to jump off. The door tenter stated that the front tub jumped off the rails as the journey approached the door, and thinking it would catch his fingers he let go and the door swung to. It has been decided to discontinue gang riding at this place.
COX John - 1888 - 31/05/1888 – Age 37 – Tunneller. Risca, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Risca, Monmouth. A charge of gelignite exploded prematurely by electricity while he was preparing the shot. He had disconnected one of the wires leading from the dynamo but when about to connect the leads with the detonator he said he felt a slight shock. An earth current had set up sufficient to fire the charge which killed Cox and at same time seriously injured another man who was close to him.
COX Samuel - 1885 – 11/11/1885 – Age 23 – Miner. Stank (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Lancashire. A protruding rib of rock on the hanging side from both sides of which the ore had been removed, had had one shot in it which partly removed it. It was intended to fire another shot and deceased and his mate were preparing for this when the rock fell on him.
COX Samuel - 1887 – 31/12/1887 – Age 18 – Horse driver. Wednesbury Oak, Philip Williams and Sons, Tipton, Staffordshire. Died 7th February. A check or drag chain broke when he was walking incautiously in front of a full tub on a descending gradient of 3 in to the yard.
COX Samuel - 1888 – 08/06/1888 – Age 53 – Miner. No.4 (metalliferous), Barrow Steel Co. Ltd., Stank, Lancashire. Struck on head by prop. Deceased and his mate were engaged getting timber down a rise deceased went down into the rise to see that it was clear for the wood to pass down when his mate fancied he heard Cox shout 'throw away'. He immediately threw a prop down the rise which struck deceased on the head killing him instantly.

A shot had been fired in his place which was five yards wide and instead of putting up a bar at once he went on filling the coal when a large stone fell knocking out two props and a bar which was seven feet from the face of the coal.

The deceased were thrown out of the cage in which they were descending by a collision of cages. One of the cages had only been put on three days previously. The guides were wire rope, with a space of only nine inches between the cages. In future the guides are to be kept stretched by weights instead of screws, and an independent pair of fend off or fly guide ropes to be placed between the cages. 2 killed 4 injured.
