ANDERTON Alfred - 1888 - 04/12/1888 – Age 48 – Inspector. Bickerstaff, Bromilow Foster and Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were fixing a pipe in the pumping shaft when one of the planks forming the scaffold on which they stood broke with their weight and they both fell down the pit. On inspection the plank proved to be quite rotten. Anderton was in charge of this shaft and it was his duty to examine the scaffold. 2 killed.

ANDREW Bennett - 1888 - 04/01/1888 – Age 47 – Miner. South Wheal, Frances (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. Unexpected fall of a rock in some stopes which rolled down and struck deceased. The rock that fell had been examined about four days before the last time the men were in the place and then seemed perfectly safe. The deceased was a delicate man and died while being taken to the hospital.

ANDREW James (non-fatal) - 1885 - 14/01/1885 – Sinker. Woodyetts, R Addie and Sons, Denny, Stirling. A piece of wood fell down shaft and struck him.

ANDREW John (injured) - 1880 - 01/03/1880 - Horse driver. Woodpark, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. He fell in front of his train on the surface tram road to the canal. Died 23rd Apr. Not comprised.

ANDREW John (non-fatal) - 1885 - 28/04/1885 – Drawer. Garscube No.2, Robert Addie and Sons, Maryhill, Lanarkshire. Injured by fall of hutch.

ANDREW Thomas - 1888 - 17/03/1888 – Miner. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Deceased was employed with other men in adding to the main engine rods. Two or three rods were resting upon a stull above the 200 fathom level. The men were clearing debris from off the stull to cut a hole to let these down. While about this one of the rods slipped on to the planks covering the stull and went through them carrying the deceased with it. It was not possible to see whether the boards were sound or not until the debris had been cleared.

ANDREW William - 1884 - 08/04/1884 – Age 40 - Labourer. Braichgoch (slate). While they were endeavouring to raise a tram of rubbish, which had got off the rails a stone fell and killed them on the spot. 2 killed.

ANDREWS Charles - 1889 - 21/10/1889 – Age 19 – Collier. Sirhowy No.5, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Sirhowy, Monmouth. An overhanging piece of top coal seems to have discharges a sprag and in consequence it fell on him.

ANDREWS Joseph - 1884 - 17/06/1884 – Age 65 – Stallman. Hartington, Staveley Iron and Coal Co., Staveley, Derbyshire. Crushed against metal prop coming down hill in front of a loaded tub.

ANDREWS Margaret - 1886 - 17/08/1886 – Age 16 - Coal loader. Saron Level, Mortgagees of the Plymouth Works, Troedyrhiw, Glamorgan. Crushed between coal trucks on the sidings. Female.

ANDREWS Nicholas - 1882 - 25/09/1882 – Age 36 - Deputy. Elswick, Elswick Colliery Co., Elswick, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof.

ANDREWS Robert (non-fatal) - 1889 - 05/12/1889 - Waggon shifter. Ravescriag No.6, Glasgow, Iron and Steel Co., Wishaw, Lanarkshire. While breaking a waggon his leg was caught by a wheel.

ANDREWS Robert - 1885 - 18/02/1885 – Age 25 – Collier. Dalzell, Wishaw Coal Co., Dalzell, Lanarkshire. Fall of side while taking down head coal. Stoop and room.

ANDREWS W. - 1888 - 27/07/1888 – Collier. East Ardsley, R Holiday and Sons, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

ANGROVE George Henry (injured) - 1889 - 18/03/1889 - Asst. miner. Tincroft (Metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. The lad was engaged in tramming and a stone rolling from the centre of the waggon cut off the top of his finger by catching it against the side of the vehicle.

ANGROVE Thomas - 1885 - 31/08/1885 – Age 18 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Deceased was descending by the man engine just below the 80 fathoms level he was too late in stepping on and fell across the sollar. Before he could get out of the way the step above came down on him and crushed him.

ANGWIN James (injured) - 1888 - 27/06/1888 – Age 60 – Stampscher. North Levant (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Engaged in attending to stamps. Fell from a board on to the floor below a distance of 5 feet. Not very seriously hurt.

ANKERS Peter - 1880 - 03/12/1880 – Age 30 – Bratticeman. Llay Hall, Llay Hall Coal & Firebrick Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. The deceased were descending the shaft to their work in the morning when the cage caught against the underground haulage rope and by some means slipped out of the wooden pipe through which it was connected down the pit and the men were thrown out falling 80 yards to the bottom. 4 killed.

ANKINSON James (injured) - 1889 - 07/10/1889 – Age 19 – Dayman, Atherton, Arley Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Both legs broken gig brow by a tub which was jerked out of the hands of three men who were taking it down after putting on a new rope. Inspection and inquiry.

ANNABLE Joseph - 1882 - 26/09/1882 – Age 13 – Driver. Kilburne, Thomas and George Small, Derby, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

ANSON William (injured) - 1886 - 28/08/1886 – Age 29 – Miner. Clifton, Executors of Colliery, Hargreaves, Lancashire. Injured by fall of roof stone from between two slips. He had observed the store but thought it was safe.

ANSTEN Eli - 1880 - 20/11/1880 – Age 30 – Collier. Ubberley Hall, J Harp and Sons, Bucknall, Staffordshire. Fall of coal.

ANTHONY Henry - 1880 – 11/03/1880 – Age 30 – Collier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Fall of coal whilst holing.

APINALL William - 1889 – 19/03/1889 – Age 54 – Collier. Ince Coal & Cannel, Ince Coal & Cannel Co., Wigan, Lancashire. He had commenced holing after setting a sprag when a small slab of coal fell over the sprag and caught him.

APPELEBY Edward - 1889 – 10/01/1889 – Age 45 – Pikeman. Homer Hill, Samuel Evers and Sons, Cradley, Worcester. Fall of thick coal from side which came over sprags. Cause a bump. Died 12th Jan.

APPLEBY Christopher - 1882 – 20/02/1882 – Age 48 – Deputy. Seaton Burn, J Bowes and Partners, Seaton Burn, Northumberland. Fall of stone from roof. 2 killed.

APPLEBY James - 1887 – 12/10/1887 – Age 42 – Banksman. Eltringham, Eltringham Colliery Co., Eltringham, Northumberland. Fell from cage in shaft.

ARCHER William - 1884 – 10/11/1884 – Age 14 – Clip boy. Conduit, Conduit Colliery Co., Brownhills, Staffordshire. Crushed to beneath between full tubs upon a surface incline.

ARCHIBALD James (non-fatal) - 1884 – 14/02/1884 – Miner. Kilbirnie, Merry and Cunninghame, Dalry, Ayrshire. Fall of roof.

ARCHIBALD William - 1882 – 15/05/1882 – Age 53 – Manager. Udston, Udston Coal Co Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. The manager holed on a place containing gas while the men were in the pit. 3 killed.

ARGAL John Henry - 1882 – 27/02/1882 – Age 17 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. At the time of the accident the mine was full of water to the 205 fathoms level where deceased the agent, and three others were on a raft putting in some timber to make a road too many got on one end of the raft causing it to lurch and precipitate three of them into the water one got on to some ground at the end of the level two the agent pulled on board, but Argal sunk, and his body was not recovered till some days afterwards. The raft had been in use about a fortnight, and was considered to be sufficiently steady.

ARKWRIGHT George - 1880 – 28/04/1880 – Age 16 – Waggoner. Westhoughton, Westhoughton Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Apparently slightly hurt by a thin scale of roof falling. He worked the next day and Tue next, but died on the 30th. The jury considered death had been accelerated by the accident.

ARMSTRONG William - 1881 – 25/06/1881 – Age 29 – Miner. Broxburn, Hayscraig (shale), Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Uphall, Linlithgow. While riding up the mine, between two water barrels, his head struck the roof. It was against orders to ride on the incline.

ARNOLD Joseph - 1883 – 19/04/1883 – Age 17 – Inclineman. Ibstock, Ibstock Colliery Co., Ashby-de-le-Zouch, Leicester. Found run over by loaded tubs on the engine plane.

ARNOLD R. (injured) - 1884 – 15/02/1884 – Age 30 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). Arnold was going into an end with a miner who intended to fire a hole which had been purposely left unignited while two adjacent holes were fired when it exploded unexpectedly. No doubt the explosion of the first two holes ignited the fuse of the third. Arms and eye hurt. 3 weeks off.

ARNOLD W. - 1880 – 22/12/1880 – Age 19 – Collier. Hoyland, Silkstone Weels Birch Ryde and Co. Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

ARROWSMITH J.W. - 1880 – 05/01/1880 – Age 15 – Lamp carrier. Manvers Main, Manvers Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

ARSCOTT David - 1889 - 18/12/1889 – Age 14 – Doorboy. Plymouth Abercanaid, Plymouth Works Proprietors, Merthyr, Glamorgan. He was run over by a loaded tram 8yds. from a door which he had just opened for the horse and tram to pass. The haulier in charge was behind the tram.

ARTHUR David - 1880 – 25/02/1880 – Age 64 – Airwayman No.2, South Plymouth, Aberdare and Plymouth Co., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan Fall of roof.

ARTHUR Isaac - 1880 – 07/12/1880 – Age 30 – Hitcher. Ferndale No.2, D Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Killed by a piece of coal falling down shaft.

ARTHUR Richard - 1887 - 18/02/1887 – Age 60 – Ostler. National, National Colliery Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas and dust caused by a shot. 39 killed.

ARTUS Robert - 1882 - 18/04/1882 – Age 45. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas in Brockwell Seam. 37 killed. Married.

ARUNDEL S. - 1886 - 09/11/1886 – Age 44 – Collier. East Ardsley, R Holliday and Sons, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

ASCROFT James - 1887 - 23/12/1887 – Age 38 – Carter. Moston, Platt Brothers and Co. Ltd. Lancashire. Fatally struck by the cart shaft when away from the colliery the horse having suddenly started consequent on another carter cracking his whip, died 29th from heart disease accelerated by the shock. Not comprised by the Act.

ASH Joseph - 1885 - 20/03/1885 – Age 31 – Miner. New Lester, James Roscoe, Lancashire. Fatal fall of coal from the face while holing without sprags. His own neglect.

ASH Thomas - 1880 - 11/05/1880 – Age 36 – Stallman. Highfield, Theo. Person, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

ASHALL Thomas - 1887 - 25/04/1887 – Age 62 – Collier. Alexandra, St. Helens Collieries Co Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was pillaring back and the roof came in bodily carrying all the props with it. This was caused by some bad slips in the roof.

ASHCROFT James (injured) - 1889 - 09/10/1889 – Age 13 – Drawer. Meadow Head, James Howard, Lancashire. Knee cut against a plate his slipped when waggoning. Inspection and inquiry.

ASHCROFT Thurston - 1887 12/12/1887 – Age 35 Miner Heskin Hall John Bowling and Co. Lancashire. Fatal fall of stone at the far end of a waggon road apparently in consequence of the incautious removal of a prop.

ASHLEY John Henry - 1885 07/05/1885 – Age 15 Driver Renishaw Park No.4 J and G Wells Ltd., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Run over by a loaded tub.

ASHMAN Able - 1883 29/05/1883 – Age 40 Timberman Eston Leonard Boult and Co., Gloucestershire. While replacing some broken timber the top fell and killed him. Robert Wilshire, collier, giving evidence at the inquest said Mr Ashmam was a ... On Monday he was at work in the roadway. When he was making a new support, part of the roof fell on him. He was an experienced man and had been at the work some years. Witness had cautioned Mr Ashman as to removing the old timber before putting up new. Mr M. Cook, the underground bailiff said the workings were inspected daily and reported on in writing before the men were allowed to commence work.

ASHMAN J. - 1883 - 11/12/1883 – Age 18 – Carter. Newbury, Westbury Iron Co., Newbury, Somerset. He shoved the tub over the top of an incline and as he was hitched to it, it overpowered and dragged him down.

ASHMAN W. - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 24 – Labourer. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

ASHMAN W. - 1883 - 01/11/1883 – Age 59 – Collier. No.1 Victoria, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouthshire. He ruptured himself lifting a lump of coal into a tram died 4th.

ASHMORE Robert - 1886 - 01/07/1886 – Age 38 – Stallman. Birley, West Sheffield Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof at the gate end.

ASHRUAN James - 1887 - 21/09/1887 – Age 74 – Engineer. Cwmsychan, Abersychan Elled Steam and House Coal Co., Abersychan, Monmouth. Through the breakage of a wire rope fence (about some pumping machinery) by which he was assisting himself up to the level of the ground he tell back about half a dozen feet and although apparently not feeling it at the time died within two or three days. The shock at his age would be a serious matter.

ASHTON A. - 1883 - 12/10/1883 – Age 60 – Collier. Wrenthorpe, D Micklethwaite and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

ASHTON Edmund - 1884 - 15/03/1884 – Age 46. Rishton, Peter Wright, Pickup, Lancashire. He was assisting to unload a winding drum which weighed about four tons for the coal pit from a canal barge. The drum was raised on some packing about a foot high from the bottom of the boat, when by some means the packing slipped, and the drum fractured his right leg so that it had to be amputated at the Blackburn Infirmary, where he died a few days afterwards. A verdict of accidental death was returned. (Accrington Times).

ASHTON Edward - 1889 - 12/11/1889 – Age 19 - Asst banksman. Peelwood, Tyldesley Coal Co., Lancashire. Fatal by falling off the gangway on the pit bank he having fainted and fallen underneath the fence railing. Inspection and inquest attended.

ASHTON Frank - 1889 - 18/01/1889 – Age 14 - Jigger. Hyde, Hyde and Houghton Colliery Co., Hyde, Cheshire. Explosion 23 killed.

ASHTON James - 1881 - 19/12/1881 – Age 32 – Collier. Abram, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 48 killed.

ASHTON James - 1884 - 05/05/1884 – Age 47 – Fireman. Moss Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Deceased fell down the shaft from the Pemberton 4 feet mouthing. The safety chain was off in contravention of the Rules but the evidence did not show whether that was the cause of his falling or whether he fell in trying to remove the scaffold. There was a light at the mouthing, and deceased was familiar with the place.

ASHTON John (injured) - 1885 - 05/10/1885 – Age 14 - Boy. Rishton, PW Pickup, Lancashire. When at the colliery with his brother's dinner took some powder which was at the sinking pit for the use of the sinkers and afterwards when away from the colliery ignited it and was badly burned. He died on the 25th. (Not comprised).

ASHTON Moses - 1885 - 03/09/1885 – Age 11 - School boy. Llan, Cardiff Iron and Tin Co., Pentyrch, Glamorgan. Trespassed underground crushed by trams.

ASHTON Ralph - 1881 - 27/04/1881 – Age 40 – Collier. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. A pony driver lost his light and the deceased undertook to drive the horse and trams to the pit shaft, and in passing through some doors he somehow lost his footing and fell, and the horse drew the trams over him. Died 25th August.

ASHURST Thomas - 1880 - 28/10/1880 – Age 15 - Pony driver. Bickerstaff, Bromilow Foster and Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. In bringing out a journey he had neglected to put in the scotches at an inclined part of the road, and the tub on which he was riding turned over and fell upon him.

ASHURST Thomas - 1882 - 05/11/1882 – Age 35 – Carpenter. Wigan Junction, Wigan Junction Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was lying on the pit bank, calling down the shaft to the men working there when the engineman lowered the cage, at a signal from the banksman, and his hand was crushed against the bearer. Neither the banksman, who was at a lower level, nor the engineman knew that the deceased was there.

ASPIN Thomas (injured) - 1885 - 14/08/1885 – Age 50 – Miner. Lower Darwin, Lower Darwin Colliery Co., Lancashire. Injured above ground between a fall tub on which he was riding contrary to orders, and a bridge over the chain road. His own fault.

ASPINALL George H. - 1889 - 31/08/1889 – Age 19 - Coal cleaner. Wet Earth, Daye Clifton and Kearsley Coal Co., Lancashire. Fatally caught between the spokes of the driving drum and the framework in cleaning coal in its passage to the boats at the end of the branch tramway to the canal. Died 1st Sept. at Manchester Infirmary. Inspection. Fencing to be added.

ASPINALL Henry - 1881 - 01/12/1881 – Age 24 – Miner. Robinhood Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Clifton, Lancashire. Coal, which crushed his sprags into the floor. Died 2nd.

ASPINALL James - 1888 - 31/10/1888 – Age 23 – Hewer. Hebburn, Tyne Coal Co., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Fall of roof.

ASPINALL James - 1889 - 11/03/1889 – Age 56 – Collier. Bickerstaff Bromilow, Foster and Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had gone down on the night shift but remembering that he had left his tallies at bank was signalled by one of the other men who he went to his work. As the engineman did not respond to the signal being at the boilers at the time it is supposed that deceased got out of the cage to signal again and in getting in was caught by the cage as it ascended. When at the boilers the dig engineman could not hear the signal.

ASPINALL James - 1889 - 14/10/1889 – Age 18 - Taker off. Chequerbent No.1, Three Quarters, Hulton Colliery Co. Ltd. Lancashire. Ankle crushed by a tub which came loose from a new rope. Inspection and inquiry.

ASPINALL Peter - 1882 - 05/01/1882 – Vagrant. Dixon Green, Lancashire. Found burned at the coke ovens. Died in the workhouse. Not comprised.

ASPINALL Samuel - 1886 - 16/04/1886 – Age 21 – Brakesman. Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. The man was on a train of loaded waggons and it appears was stepping from one to another when his head came in contact with a bridge under which they were passing and he was knocked off and fell under the wheels.

ASPINALL Thomas - 1881 - 12/08/1881 – Age 52 – Collier. Hindley Hall, Pearson and Knowles, Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was setting a prop when a sudden weight came on the roof, causing a piece of the rock roof to fall upon him. The place was well timbered.

ASPINALL William - 1880 - 25/09/1880 – Age 67 – Furnaceman. Willington, Starkers and Love, Willington, Co. Durham. Leg broken by putting it out of the cage while descending. Died 1st November.

ASPINALL William - 1888 - 05/11/1888 – Age 34 – Collier. Bamfurlong, Cross Tetley and Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was taking out a chock to make room for his drawing road after setting another chock for his protection when a heavy stone fell on him.

ASPINWALL George - 1884 - 22/08/1884 – Age 18 – Drawer. Crow Orchard No.4, Crow Orchard Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquest attended. This accident was caused through the roof falling at a fault on the drawing road the roof at this point being propped but not barred.

ASTON Ben - 1889 - 05/01/1889 – Age 19 – Loader. Lye (fireclay), Hickman and Co., Stourbridge, Worcester. Fall of clay from overhanging side. Cause a previously unseen slip.

ASTON Edward - 1888 - 10/08/1888 – Age 50 – Stallman. Sandwell Park, Sandwell Park Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. A large piece of coal rolled down the slope of the shutt upon this man.

ATHAY Frank - 1886 - 31/07/1886 – Age 57 – Overman. Griffin, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. A horse and two trains were standing on a double parting. As he was passing the horse moved on and he was crushed against the side. He died on August 1st.

ATHERTON Benjamin (injured) - 1884 - 01/03/1884 - Waggoner boy. Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Lancashire. Collision of tubs.

ATHERTON Edward - 1883 - 12/09/1883 – Age 35 – Collier. Moss Arley, Pearson and Knowles Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Wigan Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was holing when a stone suddenly fell from over the face and from between three slips. The place was well timbered and had just been examined by the fireman who was in the place at the time.

ATHERTON Elizabeth - 1884 - 01/05/1884 – Screener. White Moss, White Moss Coal Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. According to the medical evidence the woman died in Aug. from an ulcerated stomach. After her death, however the man with whom she lived stated that she had been injured at the colliery on the 1st May. Inquiries were made and it was found that she had had a slight blow through her dress catching in the nut of a revolving shaft, and that she was off work for a day or two, but she subsequently worked till she left the colliery and got employment elsewhere. Female.

ATHERTON Francis - 1881 - 27/06/1881 – Age 60 – Dataller. Meadows, Lamb and Moore, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was fixing a pulley on the engine road when the roof fell on him. The fireman stated he had examined the roof previously, and considered it safe, but it did not appear to be a very good inspection.

ATHERTON Henry - 1882 - 19/09/1882 – Age 23 – Collier. Garswood Hall, Smethurst Hoyle and Grime, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. A piece of roof fell upon him as he was passing along the main engine road. The roof at this point was not well supported, and there appeared to have been some laxity on the part of the officials.

ATHERTON James - 1883 - 20/02/1883 – Age 60 – Collier. Upper Park Lane, Garswood Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Ashton, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. After getting down and loading up his top coal the deceased was in the set of setting a prop under the roof when a stone suddenly fell from a slip.

ATHERTON James - 1886 - 11/03/1886 – Age 50 – Miner. Tyldesley, Astley and Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Tyldesley, Lancashire. Died this day having been injured by a fall of roof in the Crumbuke Mine 25th Sept. Doubt existed whether he died from the accident or from the effects of a snow ball eight days before his death. The jury returned a verdict of death from the accident in the mine.

ATHERTON John (injured) - 1885 - 22/09/1885 – Age 40 - Coal dealer. Great Lever, Earl of Bradford, Lancashire. A coal dealer and carter when standing in a shoot picking out stones from the coal which he was loading into his own cart was caught by a tub which fell through a tipper. (Not comprised).

ATHERTON Joseph - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 20 – Drawer. Moss, Pearson and Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. Fall of roof from a pot-hole which was not previously discernible.

ATHERTON Peter - 1883 - 13/04/1883 – Age 52 – Collier. Black Moss, Black Moss Colliery Co., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Two men were drawing props in the deceased’s working place and he was sent some distance away to be out of danger but a prop sprang out and struck him. All props will in the future be drawn at night when the colliers are not present. Died 16th July.

ATHERTON Thomas - 1883 - 12/09/1883 – Age 52 – Dataler. Rose Bridge, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased had been getting some roof down in a drawing road and was passing through the working place to return to the place where he had previously been working, when a stone fell from between two slips on to him. The collier knew of the slips and had set timber under the stone but the props were not set with sufficient care and they were knocked out by the fall.

ATKINS Henry - 1889 - 28/03/1889 – Age 23 – Miner. Ringley 4 Foot, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Fatal by a Stanley coal heading machine falling upon him, he having omitted to put up the stays and machine rolled over. Inspection and inquest attended.

ATKINS James W - 1887 - 07/07/1887 – Age 52 - Engine driver. Bryndu, Bryndu Coal and Coke Co., Pyle, Glamorgan. Explosion of a locomotive boiler.

ATKINS Samuel - 1884 - 01/03/1884 – Age 26 – Stallman. Dunston, Sheepbridge Iron and Coal Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof while building a pack.

ATKINS Thomas - 1884 - 12/01/1884 – Age 16 – Carter. Middle Trustees of the Countess, Waldegrave, Somerset. A stone fell upon him from a greasy joint in the top from between four props, there was no visible sign of danger previously. The place was wet and the clay in the joint was perfectly soft and nearly an inch thick.

AUCHTERLONIE Hugh - 1887 - 28/05/1887 – Age 41 – Miner. Udston, Udston Coal Co. Ltd., Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Explosion of gas 73 killed.

AUGROVE James - 1886 - 29/10/1886 – Age 14 - Asst. shaftsman. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Redruth, Cornwall. Deceased was working with his father who is a shaftsman and was engaged repairing the skip road when by some means not known he fell away and was killed.

AULD Joseph (non-fatal) - 1884 - 07/05/1884 – Screenman. Gartshore, William Baird and Co., Kilsyth, Ayrshire. Injured whilst shifting waggons.

AURELIUS Thomas - 1885 - 10/04/1885 – Age 14 – Collier. New Brithdir, Dowlais Iron Co., Glamorganshire. Fall of stone. He was fetching a sleeper for the collier for whom he worked and a bell fell upon him. The edges were not visible previous to the fall.

AUSTEAD John - 1886 - 28/10/1886 – Age 28 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), East Pool Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Whilst driving an end by boring machine an explosion took place killing Austead. It is supposed that the drill penetrated into an old socket containing some remnants of unexploded dynamite left from a previous blast.

AUSTIN Charles - 1887 - 27/01/1887 – Age 51 – Collier. St. Helens, St. Helens Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A stone fell on to him from between the bars which were six feet apart.

AUSTIN J. - 1887 - 14/03/1887 – Age 22 – Engineman. Hoyland Silkstone, Hoyland Silkstone Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Died 15th Mar.

AVORY William - 1888 - 30/07/1888 - 65n Repairer. South Liberty, Ashton Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Bristol, Somerset. While clearing he fell with his son, a loose stone rolled down and injured his spine from the effects of which he died on the 16th January 1889.

AYLETT William (injured) - 1886 - 18/05/1886 – Miner. Bridgewater No.2, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Killed fall of roof. They had taken out bottom coal leaving roof coal supported by three props when it fell from an unseen break. Accidental. 1 killed 1 injured.

AYRES Fred - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 21 – Mossfield’s, Hawley and Bridgwood Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Explosion 64 killed.
