High Moor mine: No fatalities or incidents known.
Numerous Old Sites
At the High Moor mine site (North Derbyshire), there were workings in the Wales seam and numerous old shafts in the area north from the pit towards Woodhall village were suspected and needed to be located, also drilling was done to determine the depth of the seam prior to working the Clowne seam. Loughborough University was contacted to search for the surface positions, using a proton magnetometer. However the mining surveyors brought in one of their own, Harold Pettinger a retired member, to use his High-Tec dowsing kit. This comprised metal rods swivelled on hand-holders that contained glass compartments. Harold would walk the fields with this device, sometimes with a piece of brick in the glasses, sometimes dirty water, the content depending upon the nature of the expected shaft fill. On one occasion he had nothing in the glasses and reported he was looking for a void! Eventually he found as many shafts as the proton magnetometer, however neither method was satisfactory, and the exercises were completed by bulldozer.
