    9th Jan 23rd Jan, building shield. Laser beam installed for direction, slow progress establishing solid ground, AS RH22 heading machine, average 4m a week advance for 2 weeks. Modifications, average 8m for 2 weeks, average 15m advance for 6 weeks, changed hydraulics.
    24m advance first week on contract but went off line, 9m advance getting back on line, 6m advance for 2 weeks, cavities, 12m advance building up to several weeks at 18m
    Trials with foam fill in cavities Bretby type (sodium silicate failed), Aerostem fill failed had to resort to extracting metal covering sheets over arches and filling voids with wood wool blocks problems with AS cutting machine making an even floor, lowered height due to hard sandstone project abandoned as unsuitable. Total advance done was 215m. (Two other shields were installed at Mansfield and Creswell and the modified Ollerton one sent to Harworth however all the projects failed for one reason or another and were not continued).
  • Output for 1982 was 1,030,434 tonnes and for 1982-1983 was 1,045,277 tonnes. 104.975 acres worked. 16.35 miles of roadways open. 1,157 men on books, 921 u/g and 236 s/f, 4.56 tonnes oms. Ems coal face £37.81 and ems overall £32.60. Profit £13,600,000 (£13.01 per tonne, with proceeds £38.80 per tonne).


1983:
