Kiveton And High Moor Merged 1989, Closed 1994

Photos From Darren Haywood

The combined mine of Kiveton Park (a South Yorkshire pit) and High Moor Drift mine (North Derbyshire pit), merged in 1989, was closed in September 1994. The colliery was renamed Kiveton when the two pits were merged and was administrated by South Yorkshire Area. High Moor No1 adit E446884 N379806, sealed 29/7/1994 No2 adit E446894 N379761, sealed 4/7/1994
No3 adit E446826 N379958, sealed 19/6/1994
No4 adit E446994 N379725, sealed 27/7/1994,

Seams worked: The High Moor drift mine was begun in 1953 on the site of an old opencast working with the intention of making a footrill to work the Clowne seam from the outcrop or basset. However, great difficulty was experienced driving the 2 adits due to ancient workings and large quantities of water hampering progress for about the first 350 yards (320m) of drivage. To the north were ancient workings in the Wales seam and numerous old shafts. An old shaft was passed through whilst driving the drift and a hollowed tree trunk was acting as a drain pipe.

The mine was only served by road. Coal production eventually started in 1957 with 62 men using the handfilling method. Mechanisation was not introduced until 1966. The first ventilating fan was a 10hp Radial, which was increased to 30hp in 1959. To increase the airflow the revolutions of the fan were increased in 1965. A 150hp Aerex Axial flow fan was installed in March 1966, this again increased to 360hp as the workings expanded. A ventilation borehole was sunk in 1959 to dilute CO (carbon monoxide) seeping from Newman Spinney Gasification site, the problem being fully solved when the burnt out areas were open casted later. The run of mine product was screened at 1” (0.025m) and all the plus 1” (0.025m) was transported to nearby Oxcroft. Manriding was provided in No2 drift by 75hp endless rope and transported up to 96 men 1190 yards (1088m) inbye and outbye. A Becorit Roadrailer Loco system transported up to 32 men in the supply gate. Pithead baths were provided in July 1970. Trackless vehicles were used for supplies. 2 more surface drifts were driven to couple to the workings.

The coal from High Moor had always been transported by road borne lorries and generally to the nearest power station, Staythorpe being one destination.

Seams worked: included Barnsley bed, High Hazel 1/10/1994, Clowne - 1/10/1994, Two Foot seam (0.95m).
