SNEDDON R. - 1868 - 24/10/1868 – Age 60 - Collier. Prestongrange, Sir George Suttie, Prestonpans, East Lothian. He was underholing and the coal rolled over on him. Seam 52ins worked longwall.

SNEELDON R. - 1866 - 18/07/1866 – Age 25 - Collier. Coltness, Coltness Iron Co., Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while removing pillars.

SNOW Peter - 1869 - 09/03/1869 – Age 12 - Pony driver. Edge Green, Richard Evans and Sons, Golborne, Lancashire. Run over by a train of trams.

SNOWDEN John - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

SOMERS Thomas - 1862 - 23/07/1862 – Age 30 - Collier. Parkend, John Trotter and Co., Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fall of roof occasioning such injuries as to cause his death on 23rd Aug.

SOULSBY J. - 1860 - 20/12/1860 – Age 16 – Timberleader. Minor Pit, South Hetton Coal Co., Hetton, Durham. Explosion of gas supposed to have been generated from the coals of the engine or boiler fire and not from gas generated in the workings of the mine. 22 killed.

SOULSBY Joseph - 1866 - 01/04/1866 – Ropeguider. Job’s Hill, J Pease and Co., Crook, Durham. Crushed between rope and drum.

SOULSBY Robert - 1860 - 02/03/1860. Burradon Colliery, Burradon, Durham. Explosion of gas. 76 killed. Left a wife and 3 or 4 children.

There was a slip through the strata and the ground should have been stopped down from above. I object to women taking this employment as they cannot jump back as men can. Female clothing is not adept for this work.

STEAD Thomas - 1865 - 16/06/1865 – Age 51 Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Explosion of carburetted hydrogen gas in the Bedwellty new Colliery. STEPHENS Benjamin - 1864 - 23/02/1864 – Age 14 - Collier. Forge, Blaenavon Iron Co., Nantyglo, Monmouth. These brothers were killed by a heavy fall which rolled off in consequence of a concealed rough separation in the Coal called a ‘grime’ and which unfortunately ran in a direction to throw the mass towards them. There certainly ought to have been one prop more set than I found there. 2 killed.

STEPHENS John - 1864 - 01/07/1864 – Age 16 - Haulier. Glyn Ebbw Vale Co., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp in the Rock Vein Coal in consequence of both doors being left open by the Haulier who was himself killed.
The fresh air was thus entirely cut off from the face or the work in the heading. 4 killed.

STOCKHAM or STOCKHOLM John - 1864 - 27/04/1864 – Age 39 - Banksman. Cwmnantddu, Ebbw Vale Co., Abersychan, Monmouth. He went down the pit to bring up some rails (a duty he was not called on to perform) and fastened six of them in the cage but in coming up the lashing chain broke ad he was forced out of the cage fell down the shaft and was killed.
