NAPKIN Thomas - 1865 - 24/07/1865 – Age 50 - Engineman. Rose Hill, Samuel Scowcroft, Bolton, Lancashire. Overwinding one of the cages upon himself in the enginehouse. He had only just begun to work this engine.

NASH Edward - 1864 - 06/04/1864 – Age 53 - Collier. Forge, Blaenavon Iron Co., Nantyglo, Monmouth. Very heavy fall of rock.

NASH James - 1869 - 10/06/1869 – Age 32. Ferndale, David Davies and Sons, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas from a blower. 53 killed.

NASON, George - 1860 - 25/05/1860 – Age 16 - Pikeman. Priorsfield, H.B. Whitehouse, Deepfields, Staffordshire. A piece of the new mine coal rated off the side of the gateroad caused by a slip or ‘back’ not previously visible.

NAYLOR William - 1868 - 02/11/1868 – Age 54 – Underlooker. Nut Grove, James Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Suffocation by noxious vapours produced by the mine being on fire. 3 killed.

NAYLOR William - 1869 - 24/07/1869 – Age 40. Haydock, Lancashire. Killed in a mine. Of Clipsley Lane. Buried St Thomas.

NEAL E - 1861 - 27/12/1861 – Age 27 - Engineman. Hawkesbury, Executors of G Whiddon, Coventry, Warwick. Falling down shaft.

NEAL Samuel Thorpe - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

NEAT Henry - 1865 - 18/01/1865 - Age 21 - Labourer. Gadlys Colliery, Gadlys Iron Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Injured by falling before trams in Graig incline plane from which injuries he died.

NEATH, John - 1867 - 08/11/1867 – Age 19 Ferndale, David Davies and Son, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas through one of the deceased taking the top off his lamp and exposing a naked light. 178 killed.

NEEDHAM Charles - 1869 - 15/06/1869 – Age 32 - Collier. Darfield Main, Darfield Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal. 2 killed.

NEEDHAM J. - 1860 - 21/09/1860 – Age 11 - Trammer. Newbold, S. Beale and Co., Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Falling down the shaft from cage catching the woodwork at the pit top and thereby breaking the chain which attached the rope to the cage. 4 killed.

NEEDHAM Jabez - 1869 - 09/03/1869 – Age 23 - Sinker. Teversal, Crompton, Newton and Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Scaffold in shaft gave way whilst they were on it. 2 killed.

NEIL Robert - 1863 - 01/09/1863 – Age 22 - Miner. Craigston No.1 (ironstone), W Baird and Co., Cumnock, Ayrshire.  Fall of roof at face.

NEILSON, Alexander - 1862 - 19/06/1862 – Age 59 – Bottomer. Kirkwood, John Hendrie, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Got caught by the cage when it was being lifted.

NENNISS Richard - 1864 - 07/04/1864 – Age 45 - Collier. Tredegar No.8, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Fall of about 4 tons of coal in his stall (big vein). He had unfortunately left a ‘lift’ of coal overhead and this suddenly fell. It should have been ‘cropped’.

NEWMAN A. - 1869 - 04/06/1869 – Age 15 - Horsedriver. Pelsall, B Bloomer, Pelsall, Staffordshire. A piece of coal fell from face and crushed him against a skip.

NEWMAN Patrick - 1868 - 02/06/1868 – Age 23 – Brusher. Bogleshole No.4, James Dunlop and Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. While engaged blasting with gunpowder.

NEWTON William - 1862 - 06/02/1862 – Age 27- Roadsman. Govan No.2, W Dixon and Co., Glasgow, Lanarkshire. By going with an unprotected light into the powder magazine and igniting a large quantity of powder. 2 killed.

NIBLETT John - 1860 - 20/07/1860 – Age 37 – Horsekeeper. Lightmoor, Crawshay and Co., Cinderford, Gloucester. Not liking to wade through some water at the bottom he unhitched the cart and sat in it, the band in the meanwhile ascending but on its re-descent he hitched on one ring only and went about 30 yards and then got onto the guide rope to slide down it with the gamborine came on him and killed him. If he had remained in the ascending cart though ‘tipped’ he would have been safe.

NICHOLLS W. - 1861 - 13/03/1861 – Age 48 - Sinker. Anson, (ironstone), Jeavons and Mitchell, Willenhall, Staffordshire. Windlass fell down the shaft. He had contracted to get the bricks etc. out of an old pit and descended before he had made the headgear secure and thereby lost his life.

NICHOLS J. - 1862 - 17/01/1862 – Age 47 - Collier. Essington, S Mills, Walsall, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp which terminated in death a few days later.

NOAKES Enos - 1862 - 20/10/1862 – Age 33 - Collier. Lower Conygre, Timsbury Coal Co., Timsbury, Somerset. Fall of unperceived bell mould.

NOAKES W. - 1866 - 29/07/1866 – Age 21 - Bandsman. Lays New, Brown and Freer, Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Fall of roof in Brooch Coal pit brought about by a piece of coal rolling against a timber prop which it knocked out and thus allowed the roof to fall.

NOBEL Charles - 1867 - 15/06/1867 – Age 14 – Hurrier. Black Vein, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. Kicked by a horse and so injured him that he died next day.

NOBLE Benjamin - 1869 - 01/05/1869 – Age 19 – Waterleader. Tanfield Moor, James Joicey and Co., Gateshead, Durham. Fell down shaft.

NOBLE Henry - 1866 - 14/06/1866 – Age 14. Dukinfield, FDP, Astley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire. Explosion of firedamp. 38 killed.

NOBLE Henry - 1869 - 25/08/1869 – Age 29 - Collier. Snydale, Rhodes and Dalby, Pontefract, Yorkshire. Suffocated by powder smoke after firing a shot the brattice not being properly up to the specified distance from the face. 2 killed.

NOBLE John - 1864 - 18/06/1864. Sharlston, Baines and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Bursting of a steam boiler above ground. 3 killed.

NOBLE Joseph - 1865 - 15/12/1865. Victoria, Hudson and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of coal in mine.

NOCHIER William - 1863 - 13/07/1863 - Collier. Braehead, Charles Tennant and Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Overwinding. These men went into the cage to ascend, but the bell-rope broke, after striking one, which was the signal for ‘coals on’ and the Engineman not knowing men were on, went faster than usual until with the light load he was unable to stop the engine in time to prevent the accident. 2 killed.

NOCK J - 1866 - 23/09/1866 – Age 20 - Horsedriver. Old Park, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcestershire. Fall of coal from roof brought about by a ‘bump’ which forced out prop in thick coal pit.

NOLAN Martin - 1868 - 29/04/1868 – Age 55 – Screenman. Hunwick, J Lancaster and Co., Durham. Crushed between waggons.

NOON William - 1861 - 30/09/1861 – Age 50 - Engineman. Marchay, Butterley Co., Ripley, Derbyshire. Struck by a broke pump rod when changing a bucket.

NORBURY William - 1864 - 31/08/1864. Silkstone, Fall Booth and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by the cage at the bottom of the shaft.

NORCROSS Henry - 1867 - 29/01/1867 – Age 43 - Collier. Garswood Park, David Bromilow and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Fall of coal in Ravenhead Main Delf.

NORMAN James - 1866 - 20/06/1866 – Age 30 – Pumpman. Old Welton, Savage Parsons and Co., Somerset. The guides of the pit were arranged so that no one could possibly emerge from the inside of the cage and so enter the drift but are bound to travel on the top in order to command every side of the shaft. Norman was on the bonnet when a stone fell from a loaded tub and hit him on the head. He died within the hour. I thought this a bungling affair.

NORMAN Thomas - 1861 - 16/08/1861 – Age 38 - Collier. Golynos, CB Marshall, Pontypool, Monmouth. Fall of stone in a hard heading not far from where John Smith was killed the previous day.

NORMAN William - 1864 - 15/08/1864 – Age 29 - Collier. Old Welton, Old Welton Coal Co., Old Welton, Somerset. Fall of Coal. Whilst he was getting out the bottom coal the top lift fell and killed him. NORTON Joseph - 1867 - 29/06/1867 – Age 14 - Driver. Brightside, Pitsmoor Coal Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Run over by tubs.

NORTON Samuel - 1866 - 14/06/1866 – Age 14 - Waggoner. Dukinfield, FDP Astley, Ashton-under-Lyne, Cheshire. Explosion of firedamp. 38 killed.

NOTT Charles - 1867 - 05/09/1867 – Age 11 - Collier. Gellia-Cadoxton, Evans and Bevan, Neath, Glamorgan. Killed by fall of stone.

NOTT George - 1868 - 03/01/1868 – Age 60 - Collier. Mydylog Colliery, J and C Bailey, Nantyglo, Monmouth. A bell mould as it is termed fell from the roof and killed him. I satisfied myself by examination that it was altogether concealed from view and there was no suspicion of it until it fell.

NOTT George - 1868 - 10/01/1868 – Age 18 - Collier. Bwlch Y Garn, J and C Bailey, Beaufort, Monmouth. Killed instantly by a fall of rashings which just there came in under the true roof of the felled coal vein. He should have kept those rashings cropped close to the face of work.

NOXTON T. - 1860 - 05/04/1860 – Age 26 - Drawer. Pendleton, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Pendleton, Lancashire. Crushed by tram on brow.

NUTTAL James - 1867 - 17/04/1867 – Age 13 - Drawer. Crawford, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Crushed between two tubs on engine plane.

NUTTALL Charles - 1864 - 30/09/1864. Blacker Main Colliery, Blacker Main Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Fall of coal in the mine.

NUTTALL J. - 1860 - 30/06/1860 – Age 12 - Drawer. Bennetts, Matthew Bennett and Bros., Little Hulton, Lancashire. Fall of bin in 5-Quarters mine.

NUTTALL John - 1864 - 12/07/1864 – Age 42 - Miner. Ightenhill, Executors of John Hargreaves, Burnley, Lancashire. Breakage of wire rope at a rusted place as he was descending the Broughton shaft. A safety apparatus was attached and which acted and secured the cage in the shaft but the deceased was found at the bottom.

NUTTALL Robert - 1864 - 17/02/1864 – Age 35 - Miner. Dunkenhalgh Park, Trustees of the late Joseph Barnes, Church, Lancashire. Roof falling whilst he was drawing props in Dillhall pit. Died 5th Apr.

NUTTALL Thomas Robert - 1866 - 10/12/1866 – Age 21 - Miner. Bank Colliery, John Wright, Little Hulton, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp in Cannel mine workings. 8 killed.

NUTTALL William - 1869 - 02/04/1869 – Age 14 - Waggoner. Rowley, Executors of John Hargreaves, Burnley, Lancashire. Falling off a bridge by which the surface tram road crosses a river the hook of his safety lamp having caught a tram and given him a jerk.

NUTTER Joshua - 1862 - 01/12/1862 – Age 26 - Miner. Kearsley, Samuel Scowcroft, Kearsley, Lancashire. Fall of coal in Doe mine.

NUTTER Robert - 1865 - 08/11/1865 – Age 15 - Waggoner. Cliviger, Cliviger Coal Co., Burnley, Lancashire. Overtaken on a slope by a waggon which got loose from another wagoner.

NANGARRO John - 1863 - 28/05/1863 – Age 47 - Collier. No.22, Ebbw Vale Co., Ebbw Vale, Monmouth. Killed by fall of stone from roof in the return midway.
