The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

Neither of them had any business in the pit because the bottom was accessible from an adit open today. Especially the poor - Boy. Lewis had no right there as his work was in the level above the top of the pit.

LEWIS James - 1866 - 05/01/1866 – Age 15 - Haulier. Bedwellty, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar Monmouth. He was sitting down in the main level between two pairs of timbers only a yard apart waiting for trams when about 1cwt. of stone fell right through the settings on his head and killed him.

LEWIS Lewis - 1865 - 16/06/1865 – Age 44. Tredegar, Tredegar Iron Co., Tredegar, Monmouth. Explosion of carburetted hydrogen gas in the Bedwellty new Colliery. Part of a cross heading had been permitted to fill with firedamp to the extent of between 50 and 60 yards lengthways and was thus allowed to remain for a certain number of days notwithstanding that people occasionally passed and repassed one mouthing of the heading and a lesser one called the ‘Cross hole’. I remark that the Colliers should have been taken from their work and the gas safely dislodged. 26 killed.

He was not able to jump back in time and was injured to such an extent that he died in a few hours.
