Others were in the cage ascending from the Cannel mine below and some misunderstanding arose on the cage being unexpectedly stopped.

KEALING William - 1860 - 01/12/1860 – Age 18. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamenatble calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

KEAN James - 1865 - 02/12/1865 – Age 20 - Sinker. Ponessan (ironstone), Dalmellington Iron Co., Dalmellington, Ayrshire.  Crushed by a piece of ironstone against a tree or support.

KEAN John - 1861 - 14/05/1861 – Age 38 - Collier. Abernant, Richard Fothergill and Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of roof 6 feet mine.

KEAN Thomas - 1863 - 26/02/1863 – Age 45 - Sinker. Robroyston No.2 (ironstone), Colin Dunlop and Co., Bishopbriggs, Lanarkshire. Fell out of the barrel to the bottom of the shaft, 8 fathoms.

KEAR Thomas - 1863 - 14/01/1863 – Age 30 - Collier. Hopewell Mapleford, Samuel Morgan, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Working in the high delf he drove on the level leaving much of the upper Coal above his head for some yards when suddenly a great fall took place and killed him on the spot. He should have cropped this top Coal that is to say brought it down square to the face. Unusually good rock top over all.

KEAR William - 1864 - 16/08/1864 – Age 20 - Collier. Kidnalls, Executors of John Morrell, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. A piece of Coal fell from the side whilst he was filling a tram in the face of the main road. The overman was with him at the time and no danger was apparent or apprehend, however the Coal burst suddenly off by a super incumbent pressure and killed him.

Having put steam when the kettle (cylindrical or barrel-shaped vessel of wood or iron, used to raise and lower materials and men during the sinking of a pit.) was near the surface instead of shutting it off. 2 killed.

KENNEDY Richard - 1862 - 10/01/1862 – Age 58 - Hewer. Murton, E South Hetton Coal Co., Seaham, Durham. Crushed by tubs in the engine plane, trying to get upon them when in motion.

KENNEDY William - 1861 - 01/04/1861 – Age 42 – Bottomer. Portland, Portland Iron Co., Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.  Fall of material in the shaft.

KENNEDY William - 1862 - 17/01/1862 – Age 30. New Hartley, Messrs. Carrs, Seaton Delaval, Durham. Entombment due to breaking of engine beam. 204 killed. Left a wife and three children, the youngest was born 20th. January 1862.

KENNEY P. - 1860 - 07/04/1860 – Age 35 - Deputy. Hollingwood, R. Barrow, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

KENNY Edward - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

KENWORTHY Aaron - 1862 - 20/05/1862. Skires Spring (ironstone), Earl Fitzwilliam, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Caught by chain at bottom of shaft.

KENWORTHY John - 1863 - 07/05/1863. Thorncliffe (ironstone), Newton and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof in the mine.

KENWYN John - 1867 - 04/01/1867 – Age 46 - Collier. Cwm-y-glo, Bedwas and Llantwit Co., Ltd., Bedwas, Monmouth. Fall of rock. The working place was near the crop of the coal and not far from the surface, consequently always wet so that the strata got loosened. He had stationed his son, in a safe place and then proceeded to get a mass of rock down when it suddenly displaced itself and killed him instantly.

KING Robert - 1866 - 31/10/1866 – Age 18 - Putter. Pelton, Lord Dunsany and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Durham. Killed by an explosion of firedamp in the Busty Bank Seam. 24 killed. Single Of Pit Houses.

KING Thomas - 1861 - 02/02/1861 - Labourer. Bridesholm, John Stewart and Co., Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Struck by the handle of a crane.

KING Thomas - 1866 - 15/09/1866 – Age 16 - Collier. Bwllfa, Bwllfa Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas.

KING W. - 1861 - 22/08/1861 - Collier. Heyfold, Eli Walsh, Over Darwen, Lancashire. Fall of Coal. Died 11th Nov. in Manchester, Infirmary.

KING William - 1860 - 18/03/1860 – Age 40 - Banksman. Cook’s Wethered, Cossham and Co. Parkfield, Somerset. After tipping a tub of water (in the night time) He ran back to the shaft but the engine having gone down on the crank centre the cage was three and a half feet above the collar board and being in the dark both banksman and tub went into the shaft. Engineman partly to blame. King, a widower, left six children.

KINGDOM Isaac - 1868 - 10/07/1868 – Age 21 - Hitcher. Morfa, Vivian and Sons, Taibach, Glamorgan. Killed by tram at bottom of shaft.

KINGSTON Henry - 1868 - 06/06/1868 – Age 43 - Collier. Black Vein, TW Rhodes, Risca, Monmouth. Killed on the slope by the fracture of a draw plate. There were plenty of safety stalls but he got overwhelmed by the rushing trams. He had at that moment passed a safety hole but no doubt his presence of mind had gone.

KINNIEL George - 1867 - 09/01/1867 - Sinker. Hill of Beath, Orde Adams, Dunfermline, Fife. Fell of cage whilst repairing slides.

KINSEY H - 1866 - 30/05/1866 – Age 21 - Pikeman. Spring Vale, Spring Vale Colliery Co., Bilston, Staffordshire. Injured 28th Apr. Fell out of skip whilst ascending with several others. Died this day.

KINSLEY W. - 1861 - 13/08/1861 - Miner. Kingsley Bank (ironstone), William Bowers, Cheadle, Cheshire. Fell down shaft.

KIRK E. - 1862 - 13/03/1862 – Age 27 - Miner. High Park, Barber Walker and Co., Nottinghamshire. Explosion of gas.

KIRK Owen - 1868 - 02/07/1868 - Onsetter. Penshaw, George Elliot, Penshaw, Durham. Killed in a drop staple by cage.

KIRK W. - 1862 - 25/10/1862 – Age 20 – Bondsman. Havacre, B Gibbons Jnr, Bilston, Staffordshire. Fall of rock in new mine Coal from between two slips.

KIRK William - 1865 - 25/12/1865 - Collier. Highfield, Oakerthorpe Coal Co., Alfreton, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

KIRKHAM Henry - 1869 - 09/06/1869 – Age 23 - Miner. Manor, Clifton and Kearsley Co., Kearsley, Lancashire. Coal falling as he was about to wedge it down in the Doe Mine.

KIRKHAM J - 1867 - 05/02/1867 – Age 19 - Driver. Glasshouse (ironstone), Chesterton Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Crushed between railway waggons.

KIRKHAM J. – 1864 - 09/08/1864 - Collier. Bucknall, Gerrard and Hawkes, Hanley, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp.

KIRKHAM John - 1866 - 12/07/1866 – Age 45 - Sinker. Cwm, Tylery South Wales Co., Ltd., Monmouth. Being at the bottom and about to fasten a tram to the chain he was suddenly struck on the head and killed by a piece of stone which fell from the side of the pit.

KIRKHAM W. - 1866 - 23/11/1866 – Age 56 - Sinker. Madeley Wood, Anstice and Co., Wellington, Shropshire. Rock fell from side of shaft.

KIRKHAM William - 1867 - 23/03/1867 – Age 17 - Waggoner. Vron, Maurice and Low, Wrexham, Denbigh. Run over by loaded tub in the mine.
