DANDO Charles - 1867 - 30/09/1867 – Age 41 – Pumpman. Coal pit Heath, Sir Greville Smyth, Bart, Bristol, Somerset. Suffocated by carbonic acid gas and fell from the rope whilst being drawn up. They did not take proper steps in ascertaining the presence of blackdamp at the time although they well knew that it occasionally made its appearance in the pit.

DAVENPORT Benjamin - 1867 - 08/05/1867 – Age 34 - Miner. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Manchester, Lancashire. Suffocated by afterdamp from an explosion in the Gingham 4-ft mine. Flexible air tubing about 14 ins in diameter was being used in several places to Convey air to the faces beyond the cut-throughs and scarcely any leakage allowed; the small area so far stopped the general ventilation as to cause the gas to overpower it in the innermost. 3 killed working.

DAVENPORT William - 1867 - 09/09/1867 – Age 48 – Blacksmith. Shakerley, William Ramsden, Tyldesley, Lancashire. Crushed by the pulley frame at the counter-balance pit which was drawn over him by the engine overwinding. There were two shafts each with a separate rum worked by the same engine and in putting the engine into gear the Counter-balance drum was not set right with the indicator.

Deceased had been frequently cautioned not to go to the bottom during the ascent and descent of loaded and empty skips. He was too young for such employment.
